A(2016·陕西省质量检测二)Dear Mr.Wolfson,The purpose of this letter is to inform you of one of our citizens who I believe should receive some special recognition for dedicated(敬业的) community service. The person I recommend is Elizabeth Samuelson.I believe you know her in your position as volunteer coordinator(协调员).I have known Elizabeth for more than 20 years as both a friend and a neighbor.During that time I have seen her work tirelessly on scores of community projects and committees. As far as I know, she has never received any kind of recognition from the community for her work.I believe she should be given some sort of special recognition.Just last year alone, she worked on at least six different community projects including the Park Renewal Project and the Heritage Homes FundRaising Banquet. In addition, she is a weekly driver for the MealsonWheels program and she visits patients in the care unit on a regular basis.Whenever a project or committee needs her, she will put herself into the work wholeheartedly.I’m sure that if you check with a few of your staff members who have been there over the years, they will confirm Elizabeth’s community service r ecord and probably be able to add many examples to the few I have given here.By the way,Elizabeth has no idea that I am writing this. She is a humble(谦虚的) person, and if she were aware of it,she would not allow me to send it.I thought about writing such a letter about her a number of times in the past but just never took action. Then last week,I noticed in the paper that you will sponsor(主办) an annual dinner at which dozens of awards are given out to people with much less community service than Elizabeth. In fact,I checked with her and she has never even been invited to that annual event!I urge you to correct that omission(疏忽) now and take action to see that Elizabeth is properly recognized for her many years of silent but outstanding service to this community.Sincerely,Linda Sullivan【解题导语】本文是一篇应用文。

In many countries, the two choices are natural gas and electricpowered stoves. The World Health Organization warns that millions of people are dying every year from indoor air pollution which results from the use of dangerous fuels and cookstoves in the home. Most of the deaths are in developing countries. To help fight the problem, the WHO announced new guidelines aimed at reducing household pollutants. The WHO’s plan of action for reducing indoor pollutants is based on new findings, which show that the use of toxic(有毒的) fuels in inefficient stoves, space heaters or lights is to blame for many of these deaths.Carlos Dora, an official in the WHO, says people should not use unprocessed coal indoors. He says, “Opening a window or door to let out the harmful air will not correct the situation. It will only pollute the outdoors. You can’t expect that a bit of ventilation(通风) is going to get rid of this. It is really about clean technologies and clean fuels. And, the fuel story has not been stressed enough so far in the global debate. So, that is the new thing. We should be going for cleanfuels, avoiding coal and going for the solar.〞WHO officials say indoor pollution leads to early deaths from stroke, heart and lung disease and childhood lung cancer. These diseases can often result from high levels of fine particulate matter and carbon monoxide(一氧化碳) released by the burning of solid fuels. These fuels include wood, coal, animal waste, crop waste and charcoal. Women and girls are the main victims. The United Nations found that more than 95 percent of households in subSaharan Africa depend on solid fuels for cooking. It says huge populations in India, China and Latin American countries, such as Guatemala and Peru, are also at risk. WHO experts note some new, safe and lowcost technologies that could help are already available. But this is just a start. They are urging developing countries to use cleaner fuels and increase access to cleaner and more modern cooking and heating appliances.【解题导语】本文是一篇科普说明文。

This kind of learning, which results simply from observing and imitating the behaviors of others, is called observational learning. Observational learning helps people acquire proper behaviors in their families and cultures. By watching others, we learn how people talk to each other, what clothes are“fashionable”, and how to interact with people. In one of Bandura’s classic studies, children were divided into three groups: One group watched an adult beating up a Bobo doll, one group watched an adult ignoring the Bobo doll, and the third didn’t see an adult at all. After being placed in a room with toys, but not being allowed to play with them, all the children were thenplaced in another room with a variety of toys, including a Bobo doll. Children in the first group tended to imitate what they had seen, mistreating the doll and even inventing new ways to abuse it. They were also aggressive with the other toys in the room.Researchers have discovered that several characteristics of models can make learning through observation more effective. Not surprisingly, the more you pay attention to the model, the more you learn. You are more likely to pay attention if the model is an expert, is goodlooking, has high status, or is socially powerful. Then, as teachers, how can you apply observational learning? Here are a few guidelines. Above all, model the behaviors and attitudes you desire your students to learn. For example, show enthusiasm for the subject you teach. Be willing to demonstrate both the mental and the physical tasks you expect the students to perform. Second, use peers, especially class leaders, as models. For example, in group work, pair students who do well with those who are having difficulties. Third, you may seek the help of class leaders in modeling behaviors. Examples include letting highstatus students l ead an activity when you need class cooperation or when students are likely to be reluctant(不情愿的) at first.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了著名的“波波玩偶实验”及Bandura所倡导的观察学习理念。

No. But a new research shows that large amounts of flavones, substances found in cocoa, tea and some kinds of vegetables, may improve agerelated memory failure.Dr. Scott Small is a professor of neurology at Columbia University in New York City. He is the lead writer of a research paper describing the effects of cocoa flavones on brain activity. His study involved 37 volunteers aged between 50 and 69. Researchers gave them a highlevel flavones drink made from cocoa beans or a lowlevel flavones drink. For a period of three months, some subjects got 900 milligrams of flavones a day. The others got 10 milligrams of flavones each day. Brain imaging and memory tests were given to each study subject before and afterthe study. Dr. Small says that the subjects who had the highlevel flavones drink showed much improvement on memory tests. The researchers warn that more work is needed to be done because this study was performed only on a small group. Dr. Joann Manson is the lead researcher of a fouryear study involving 18,000 adults. This study will use flavones capsules (胶囊). The study subjects will be divided into two groups and will take two pills per day. The capsules used will all look the same. But one group’s capsules will contain flavones, while the other group will take capsules made of an inactive substance, or placebo.Dr. Manson says it’s not necessary for people to start eating more chocolate, because a person would have to eat a huge amount of chocolate to get the same level of flavones given to the test subjects. He adds many manufacturers have planned to remove the flavones from their chocolate products. Similarly, Dr. Manson says a cocoabased flavones extract(提取) may be developed in the future. But he says that more studies are needed to see how much flavones is good for our health.【解题导语】这是一篇科普文章,文章主要描述了每天吃一块巧克力是否真的可以预防与年龄有关的记忆衰退,答案是否定的,文章介绍了两位研究者分组实验的研究成果,巧克力中主要含有黄烷醇类物质,它对人体是有益的,但是多少量对人体健康有益还需要再研究。

A recent experiment suggeststhat the answer to that question may depend on your age.Martin Doherty, a psychologist at the University of Strling in Scotland, led theteam of scientists. In this experiment,Doherty and his team tested the perception(观察力) of some people, using pictures of some orange circles. The researchers showedthe same pictures to two groups of people. The first group included 151 childrenaged 4 to 10, and the second group included 24 adults aged 18 to 25.The first group of pictures showed two orange circles alone on a white background. One of the circles was larger than the other, and these people were asked to identifythe larger one. Fouryearolds identified the correct circle 79 percent of the time.Adults identified the correct circle 95 percent of the time.Next, both groups were shown pictures where the orange circles, again of differentsizes, were surrounded by gray circles. Here’s where the trick lies. In some ofthe pictures, the smaller orange circle was surrounded by even smaller gray circles —making the orange circle appear larger than the other orange circle, which was the real larger one. And the larger orange circle was surrounded by even bigger gray circles—so it appeared to be smaller than the real smaller orange circle. When young children aged 4 to 6 looked at these tricky pictures, they weren’t fooled—they were still able to find the bigger circle with roughly the same accuracy as before. Older children and adults, on the other hand, did not do as well. Older children often identified the smaller circle as the larger one, and adults got it wrong most of the time.As children get older, Doherty said, their brains may develop the ability to identify visual context. In other words, they will begin to process the whole picture at once: the tricky gray circles,as well as the orange circle in the middle. As a result, they’re more likely to fall for this kind of visual trick.【文章大意】文章主要讲述了观察力跟年龄有关,不同的年龄,观察力不同。
