Unit 4 Helping people around the world一、阅读理解。

Beijing’s Forbidden City is a place full of wonder. From its thousands of rooms to its many beautiful artifacts, there’s no wonder it’s one of China’s most popular tourist destinations. But even more than 600 years after it was built, it’s still managing to serve up surprises. Since it was built during the Ming Dynasty, it’s estimated that the Forbidden City has survived more than 200 earthquakes. And while most structures aren’t made to survive natural disas ters, let alone ones built hundreds of years ago, it seems that the Forbidden City was built to withstand anything.A recent television documentary by UK broadcaster Channel 4 explored the skills of the ancient building’s designers. A group of Chinese car penters and engineers were shown building a scale model (成比例模型) of one of the Forbidden City’s palaces, at one fifth of the size.To show how strong ancient Chinese architecture really is, the model was put to the test. It was subjected to a simulated (模拟的) earthquake of 9.5 on the Richter scale – equivalent to the largest ever recorded quake – and survived. Instead of falling apart, the model was just moved gently during the test.According to experts, the answer to the Forbidden City’s strength, as well as other ancient Chinese structures’, lies in dougong– a centuries-old building method invented in China. This is the name for special brackets on buildings. Despite being held together without any nails or glue, the brackets are perfect at keeping structures together when the weather gets rough.“Dougong design is an important earthquake-resistant feature of classical Chinese structures because the framework changes in shape when under pressure, much like the shock absorbers (减震器) of a car,” according to Chinese National Geography. “Ancient Chinese craftsmen created structures that were both enduring and aesthetically (在美学方面) pleasing using dougong, revealing their advanced understanding of mathematics, architecture, materials, and structural science.” The Forbidden City draws visitors because of its rich history and culturalsignificance, but perhaps it should add one more thing to its list of attractions: earthquake shelter.1. What is the article mainly about?A.What has made the Forbidden City a popular tourist destination.B.What has helped the Forbidden City survive so many earthquakes.C.The characteristics of Chinese architecture during the Ming Dynasty.D.A variety of building methods used in ancient Chinese structures.2. Which of the follow ing can best replace the underlined phrase “was subjected to” in Paragraph 4?A. sufferedB. was controlled byC. obeyedD. was affected by3. What was the aim of the test in the UK documentary?A. To reproduce a real earthquake from the Ming Dynasty.B. To discover a long-lost Chinese building methodC. To explain the impact of earthquakes on ancient buildings.D. To prove the strength of ancient Chinese architecture.4. What is “dougong” according to the text?A. A paint that gives Chinese buildings an attractive look.B. A tool used by ancient people to measure earth-quakes.C. Special building parts that keep a traditional Chinese building together,D. A building piece located in the center of a traditional Chinese house.【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了紫禁城的斗拱设计帮助它能够在多次地震中幸存。

Book 6 Unit 4 Helping people around the world[阅读理解组块练]Ⅰ.阅读理解A(山西省太原市2018届高三第二次模拟考试)In the story of “The crow and the Pitcher” from Aesop's Fables, a thirsty crow (乌鸦)drops stones into a narrow jar to raise the low level of water inside so he can take a drink. Now scientists have evidence to back up that story.Crows actually do understand how to make water displacement (移位) work to their advantage, experiments show. The results suggest that the birds are, at least in some aspects, as smart as firstgraders.Researchers, led by Sarah Jelbert at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, presented six crows with tubes filled with water.Inside the tubes, a worm or piece of meat on a piece of wood was floating, just out of reach of the crow.In front of the tubes, the researchers arranged several rubber erasers that would sink, and some plastic objects that would float. The crows found out that they could drop the erasers into the tubes in order to raise the water level and get their snack. However, the_birds_handled_awkwardly in experiments in which they could choose to drop objects in either a wide tube or a narrow one to get a snack, the researchers said.Dropping objects into narrow tube would lift the water level by a greater amount and put the treat within reach after just two drops; while it took around seven drops to raise the snack to the same level in the wide tube. The crows obviously didn't realize this, and most of them went for the wide tube first.Previous studies showed that chimps and human children can solve similar tasks. In a 2011 study, chimps and kids found out that they could put water into a tube to reach a peanut that was floating in a small amount of water at the bottom. 1.How did the crows get the snack in Sarah's experiment?A.By breaking the tube.B.By dropping in erasers.C.By standing on the wood.D.By removing the wood.2.What does the author mean by “the birds handled awkwardly” in Paragraph 4?A.They were unable to tell different shapes.B.They dropped objects only into narrow tubes.C.They were not aware of the snack at first sight.D.They mostly avoided the easier way to get the snack.3.What does the text mainly focus on?A.Stories of Aesop's Fables.B.The development of crows.C.Crows' intelligence.D.Humananimal communication.4.What can we learn from the passage?A.Crows are almost as clever as firstgraders in some respects.B.Crows understand water displacement completely.C.Chimps and children are much smarter than crows.D.The story of “The crow and the Pitcher” lacks evidence.【答案与解析】1.B 细节理解题。

The American travel website company TripAdvisor publishes a list of the world's best beaches every year.Today,we are going to explore some of this year's top 10 beaches in the world.1.Baia do Sancho,BrazilIt is named as this year's best beach in the world. Its water is calm and clear. Its sand is fine and soft. But getting to Baia do Sancho is not so easy.It is on Fernando de Noronha,a volcanic island more than 300 kilometers off Brazil's coast.Travelers must take a plane or boat from major cities in northern Brazil to get there. And no more than 420 visitors can be on the island at one time.2.Grace Bay,Turks and CaicosWhile Baia do Sancho is difficult to get to,TripAdvisor's secondranked beach could not be much easier for tourists to reach. This beach has impossibly clean and clear waters and pure white sand. Its calm waters make it extremely safe for swimming, snorkeling,or simply floating.Once on land, many visitors enjoy walking—barefoot—for several kilometers on the soft, warm sand.3.Eagle Beach,ArubaTo get to the thirdbest beach,we head south to the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba.Like Grace Bay,Eagle Beach has clear, calm waters and soft white sand.It offers visitors a chance to try different water sports, including tubing and jet skiing.Eagle Beach may be best known, however, for its dramatic sunsets. On clear nights, the sky turns red, orange, and purple.4.Playa Paraiso,CubaThe fourthbest beach is Playa Paraiso,an island off Cuba's southern coast. It has a fun, laidback restaurant for those who wish to eat and drink. There is little else on the beach. And that is exactly what visitors like about it.People come here for the sugarlike sand and calm waters filled with colorful wildlife.1.Which of the following is true about Baia do Sancho?A.It receives thousands of visitors each time.B.It can only be visited by plane.C.It is near the Brazil's coast.D.It is hard to reach.2.Where can visitors go if they want to enjoy the beauty of the sinking sun?A.Baia do Sancho,Brazil.B.Grace Bay,Turks and Caicos.C.Eagle Beach,Aruba.D.Playa Paraiso,Cuba.3.What can visitors mainly do on Playa Paraiso,Cuba?A.Go boating.B.Have a relaxing dinner.C.Admire colorful sand.D.Try different water sports.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。
