Before saying anything, people communicate nonverbally by making gestures. According to an investigation(调查),only 30 to 35 percent of our communication is verbal. When people don’t know the language, the most common way to communicate is through gestures. However, many gestures have different meanings, or no meaning at all, in different parts of the world. In the United States, for example, nodding your head up and down means “yes”. In some parts of Greece and Turkey, however, this motion can mean “no”. In Southeast Asia, nodding your head is a polite way of saying “I’ve heard you.”In ancient Rome, when the emperor wanted to spare someone’s life, he would put his thumb up. Today in the United States, when someone puts his/her thumb up, it means “Everything is all right.” However, in Sardiniaand Greece, the gesture is insulting (侮辱)and should not be used there. In the United States, raising your clasped(握紧的) hands above your head means “I’m the champion” or “I’m the winner”. It is the sign that prizefighters make when they win a fight. When a leading Russian statesman(政治家) made this gesture after a White House meeting, Americans misunderstood and thought he meant he was a winner. In Russia, however, it is a sign of friendship. There are other nonverbal signals that people should be aware of when they go to another country, such as the distance to maintain between speakers. Americans stand closer to each other than English people. English people don’t like touching somebody or being touched. Now in America, touch is important. For example friends touch each other on the arm. They often put an arm around a fr iend when they say “hello” or “goodbye”.5.It is very important to know how to communicate nonverbally when you are in another country because .A. most people speak different languagesB. much of our communication is nonverbal on many occasionsC. people usually make gestures before saying anythingD. it’s easy to learn how to express oneself through gestures6.If a native in Singapore nods his head up and down when you talk to him, his motion means .A. yesB. noC. that’s all rightD. She said,“The plans I’ve seen look unbelievably exciting, and I don’t think fans of the books or films will be disappointed.”Stuart Craig, the man in charge of the design of the park, is an Oscar-winning production designer who worked on the Harry Potter films so it should be faithful(忠实的) to JK Rowling’s vision.Stuart Craig said, “Our primary goal is to make sure this experience is an authentic extension(原著的延伸) of Harry Potter’s world as it is por trayed in the books and films.”Visitors to the park will be able to explore some of their favourite places from the book such as the village of Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest and, of course, Hogwarts Castle, where Harry goes to school.Although fans can look forward to a holiday in the Harry Potter theme park, many will be saddened by the fact that the best-selling series (系列)is now drawing to a close. The final instalment(分期连载的一部分) in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will be published on 21 July, and to mark the event JK Rowling is to read extracts(摘录) from the book to a select audience at midnight on the day of publication.Rowling has announced that two characters die in the final book, but has not revealed(透露) if Harry is one of them so fans will have to wait to findout the fate of their magical hero.9. No matter what country you live in, you can learn world trade in Japan, study art in France, or take dancing lessons in Ghana.Besides the excitement of travel, one reason to study abroad is that you will experience new customs, holidays, food, art and music. I learned a lot from the stand of a native member of the country, not from a tourist’s stand.”Another reason for studying abroad is that you’ll gain self-confidence. Christina studied in Caracas, Venezuela, a city of 10 million people. The city isdifferent from her hometown. Christina said she learned how to express herself in another language. That made her more confident.Living away from home can also help you adjust in the transition to college and adulthood. But rather than giving up, the film-maker managed to look up ways to treat his injuries on his iPhone beneath the earth. He also wrote a moving diary for his family, allowing them to read his last messages of love and comforting them after his death. Instead, he was pulled from the ruins after a week--- and would soon meet his family.Mr. Woolley, from Colorado Springs, America, had raveled to Iran with his colleague David Hames. Both had been working for Charity Compassion International. He was in the hotel when the earthquake struck. Buried undertons of ruins, the film-maker downloaded a first aid application to his iPhone. He used the instructions from the app to treat the serious bleeding. He used his shirt to tie off the injury on his leg and a sock to bandage the back of his head. The app advised him not to go to sleep if he felt sleepy. Mr. Woolley set his phone alarm to go off every 20 minutes to keep him awake.Mr Woolley used a small black notebook to write messages to his family, including his son and wife. He had thought his relatives would read them after he was dead.“ I was in a big accident. Don’t be upset at God,” he wrote. “ I’m still praying that God will get me out, but he may not. But he will always take care of you.”Mr Woolley was eventually rescued by a French rescue team. After being flown to Miami for surgery, he said, “I cried. At that time I wanted to use that time to do everything I could for my family. With no limit to the number of players per side, hundreds would participate in it, sometimes resulting in major injuries. The innovation(创新) of running with the ball was introduced between 1859 and 1865. The popula r myth of the sport’s origin states that Rugby pupil William Webb Ellis broke the local rules by running forward with the ball in his hands in 1823. Rugby School produced the first written rules for their version of the sport in 1845.In the result that the teams still tied at the end of the match, a drop goal shootout was held. The selected kickers of the two teams would have one shot at the goal each and would take turns shooting at the goal until one of the kickers missed. In England, rugby unio n is widely regarded as an “establishment” sport, played mostly by members of the upper and middle classes. For example, many students at private schools and grammar schools play in rugby union. In France, rugby is also widely played and has a strong tradition in the Basque people along the border regions between Spain and France. The game is very popular in South Africa among both blacks and whites, having been introduced by English-speaking settlers in the 19th century. British colonists also brought the game with them to Australia and New Zealand, where the game is widely played. It has spread then to much of Polynesia, having particularly strong followings in Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga. An official rugby union ball is made of leather or suitable material. Rugby shirts were formerly made of cotton but are now made of a cotton and polyester (涤纶) mix. This material has the advantage of not absorbing as much water or mud as cotton alone.8. Which of the following statements is WRONG about the ancient rugby?A. Players often got injured.B. A great number of people could take part.C. Players could run forward with the ball in their hands before 1823.D. Written rules were first made in Rugby School in the 1840s.9. Why was a drop goal shootout made?A. And his efforts do not only save his life but also bring hope to those who are faced with the same situation.Golesworthy was born with a condition called Marfan’s syndrome, a genetic disorder that causes problems with eyes, skeleton, and in Tal’s case, his heart. In 1993, when he was told he needed life-saving heart surgery, he said no. “The operation really didn’t look attractive,” says Golesworthy. What he particularly didn’t like was having to be on blood thinners after the operation, something that would prevent blood vessel (血管) blocks but present some other risks; “I was riding motorbikes then, and skiing, so my whole lifestyle would have been affected.”By 2000, however, his condition had worsened. Realizing something had to be done, Golesworthy put his years of experience as research-and-development engineer to good use. He decided he would fix himself. “Learning new stuff and developing new ideas, that was my job,” Golesworthy says.So Golesworthy devoted himself to searching for a way that could solve hisproblem. Following his novel way, Golesworthy subjected himself to 30 hours in an MRI scanner, used 3D printing to create a physical copy of the faulty part of his heart and then used soft textile mesh (网状物) to make a sleeve to fit around it.Eventually, his determination coupled with the original yet practical solution won him the support of two leading surgeons and helped him raise the money to develop his idea. In May 2004, at the age of 47, he became the subject for his own invention, the ExoVasc Personalised External Aortic Root Support (PEARS). The operation was a success. It has since been used by surgeons in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Czech Republic, New Zealand, Australia, and the Netherlands.“When you’re as motivated as I was,” Golesworthy says, “you make things happen.”23.Why did Tal refuse the heart operation in 1993?A.It would take up too much time. B.It would make him quit his job.C.It would prevent him enjoying his hobbies. D.It would cost too much money. 24.What encouraged Tal to think about fixing himself initially?A.His working experience as an engineer. B.His knowledge of medicine.C.His keen desire to learn new things. D.His surgeon friends.25.What kind of person is Tal?A.Pessimistic and active. B.Brave and stubborn.C.Aggressive and humorous. The warning came in a report from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, an international expert group that advises governments. The group has more than 130 member states. The experts called for major efforts aimed at preventing pandemics rather than trying to contain them after they happen. The report urges major worldwide efforts to stop habitat destruction that can lead viruses to jump from wild animals to humans. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that three out of every four new or emerging infectious diseases in people come from animals. Scientists have said COVID-19 probably started in bats and began spreading among humans. In their report, the experts predict that about half of an estimated 1.7 million undiscovered viruses in nature might be able to infect people. Activities such as poaching(偷猎) or clearing forests to grow soy or palm oil can bring humans and disease closer together.Peter Daszak was the report’s lead writer. He is president of EcoHealth Alliance, an international health, environment and development organization. He said in a statement that even though the experts call for urgent action, “this report is not a misfortune suggesting the world’s going to end and it’s too late.” Instead, Daszak said it should be seen as “an optimistic call for action.”He noted that the current method for dealing with pandemics is to wait for them to emerge and then try to identify them before they spread. COVID-19 has demonstrated the problems with that plan. Officials attempted to contain COVID-19 after the disease was discovered last year, but it was already too late. “And here we are waiting for a vaccine(疫苗) and drugs to work,” Daszak said. “It’s not a good strategy. We need to do more.”27.Why does the aim of urging habitat protection need major world efforts? A.To prevent viruses spreading from animals to humans.B.To stop illegal poaching and forest destruction.C.To control pandemics after they happen.D.To strengthen international cooperation.28.How many natural viruses might infect humans?A.About 1.7 million. B.About 0.85 million.C.About three fourths. D.About 130.29.What might be good strategy according to Peter Daszak?A.Waiting for pandemics to appear.B.Expecting effective vaccines and drugs.C.Investigating pandemics after they appear.D.Acting earlier and more actively to explore more30.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Advice from Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform.B.Experts’ Views on Disease Control and Prevention.C.More Deadly Pandemics if Nature Not Protected.D.Unstoppably Increasing Pandemics.三、对话填空M: It’s such a fine day. 31W: I’d love to, John, 32M: Oh, I see. Caring and sensitiveBWhen soruething goes wrong, it can be very easy to say, "I know I'm late, but it' s not myfault; the car broke down" and so on. It is probably not your fault, but once you develop the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could not change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame. And start focusing on how to y the situation. This is the winner's key to success.Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. For another example, if your colleague (罔事) causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility rather than simply blame the person. You should find creative ways to work successfully instead of blaming your colleague. This is what being a winner is all about---creatively using your skills and talents (才华) s0that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don't have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better atseeing those problems as challenges(扫已战) and opportunities to develop their talents. So, stop focusing on "Whose fault it is". Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just something on the road to vour success.24. Wanting to keep theru healthy until old age, he brushed his teeth fifteen minutes after every meal; he was also brushing too hard. Most habits have both advantages and disadvantages.
