Soon he had to work in a machine shop for two dollars and fifty cents a week. The hard life made him strong and able.At that time there was another interest in the life of the young Ford. He dreamed to make a machine that could run without a horse. So it was named “horseless carriage”. He overcame a lot of difficulties and in April, 1893, the horseless carriage was finally finished, which was the first car. Later, Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor pany. He was really the first inventor of the car in the world.。

Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a literary masterpiece written in 1876 by the famous writer Mark Twain. The story line is simple. The book is like a biography (自传) of a summer in Tom Sawyer's life.Tom Sawyer is a smart but naughty young boy living in the small town on the Mississippi River. He is an orphan and lives with his aunt. He has many clever ideas, but doesn't like school, and always likes to escape the school to fish. Tom has a trusted friend, Huck Finn, who few of the adults approve of. Tom Sawyer and Finn have great adventures on the Mississippi River, pretending to be pirates, attending their own funeral, and witnessing a murder. Tom overes fear and appears in court and speaks out the murderer. He and his friends finally discover a lot of treasures and they bee millionaires ...Mark Twain's writing is based on his own childhood and his personal experience. What makes this story great is that Tom Sawyer represents everything that is great about childhood. It is a story filled with action, adventure, ingenious ideas, love, and schoolyard politics. The wholestory is seemingly a plication of what Twain did or wished to do during his childhood. The book is a little difficult to read at first. Perhaps, it will take you a little while to get used to the 19th century dialect in the book. But on the whole, the book is an enjoyable read for people of all ages. I highly remend this book for anyone looking forward to feeling young again. 65.Which of the following is doesn’t fit in with Tom Sawyer?A. He often escapes the school.B. He has a trusted friend.C. He is a good student.D. Both of his parents died when he was young.66.The author's purpose of writing this passage is to ________.A. let readers know Mark TwainB. remind people of their childhoodC. tell the story of The Adventures of Tom SawyerD. remend the book to readers(B)For a while, my neighborhood was taken ever by an army of joggers(慢跑者). They were there all the time: early morning, noon, and evening. There were little old ladies in gray sweats, young couples in Adidas shoes, middle-aged men with red faces. “e on!” My friend Alex encouraged me to join him as he jogged by my house every evening. “You’ll feel great.”Well, I had nothing against feeling great and if Alex could jog every day, anyone could. So I took up jogging seriously and gave it a good two months of my life, and not a day more. Based on my experience, jogging is the most overvalued form of exercise around, and judging from the number of the people who left our neighborhood jogging army. I’m not alone in my opinion.First of all, jogging is very hard on the body. Your legs and feet a real pounding(追击)ruining down a road for two or three miles. I developed foot, leg, and back problems. Then I read about a nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack while jogging, and I had something else to worry about. Jogging doesn’t kill hundreds of people, but if you have any physical weaknesses, jogging will surely bring them out, as they did with me.Secondly, I got no enjoyment out of jogging. Putting one foot in front of the other for forty-five minutes isn’t my idea of fun. Jogging is also a lonely pastime. Some joggers say, “I love being out ther e with just my thoughts” Well, my thoughts began to bore me, and most of them were on how much my legs hurt. And how could I enjoy something that brought me pain? And that wasn’t just the first week: it was practically every day for two months. I never go t past the pain level, and pain isn’t fun. What a cruel way to do it! So many other exercises, including walking, lead to almost the same results painlessly, so why jog?I don’t jog any more, and I don’t think I ever will. I’m walking two miles three time s a week at a fast pace, and that feels good. I bicycle to work when the weather is good. I’m getting exercise, and I’m enjoying it at the same time. I could never say the same for jogging, and I’ve found a lot of better ways to stay in shape.67. What was the writer’s attitude towards jogging in the beginning?A. He felt it was worth a try.B. He was very fond of it.C. He was strongly against it.D. He thought it must be painful.68. Why did the writer give up jogging two months later?A. He disliked doing exercise outside.B. He found it neither healthy nor interesting.C. He was afraid of having a heart attack.D. He was worried about being left alone.69. From the writer’s experience, we can conclude that______.A. not everyone enjoys joggingB. he is the only person who hates joggingC. nothing other than jogging can help people keep fitD. jogging makes people feel greater than any other sport.(C)Hetty Robinson learnt all about money when very young. Three hundred people who were employed in jobs that require an advanced level of public speaking skills were interviewed. The participants included politicians, professors and motivational speakers. The results of the study showed that 77% of the participants reported having parents that encouraged them to ask questions and state their opinions from a young age. Eighty-five percent answered that their parents had repeatedly exposed them to a variety of positive “public speaking” experiences at home. These experiences included practicing speeches, performing dramas and reciting poems. In another study to determine the causes of fear of public speaking, 70% of the participants said they had not had any public speaking opportunities at home. Eighteen percent of the participants had been given such opportunities, but these had resulted in a loss of confidence. One of the participants recalled a painful experience from when he was eight years old. His parents had arranged for him to present his school project about earthquakes to his cousins. As an outgoing boy, he was eager to show off all his hard work, until he forgot a sentence and started to stutter (结巴). His cousins began to laugh at him, and instead of his family encouraging him to continue with his presentation, his father told him to call it a day. The stress of this incident andthe feeling of being rejected carried over to school, where he started struggling with his words and went red like a sunset every time he had to speak in front of an audience. From these studies, we can see that the way parents handle their child’s munication efforts and a child’s future attitude towards public speaking can be linked. Not all people are born afraid of public speaking, but rather they grow to be afraid of it due to awful experiences or outside influences. Yet this does not mean they have no control over their fear—because they do.73. According to the study of xx, _____ were important in making successful public speakers.A. caring professorsB. high motivationsC. encouraging parentsD. original opinions74. In the 3rd paragraph, the expression “call it a day” most probably means _____.A. stopB. respondC. tryD. relax75. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A. How much exposure to public speaking is proper?B. What kinds of jobs require public speaking skills?C. Is public speaking important for children?D. Are people born afraid of public speaking?76. The paragraph following the last might be about _____.A. more experiences of unsuccessful public speakingB. ways to gain self-confidence in public speakingC. other reasons for failure in public speakingD. features of successful public speaking(E)Here is one of the world’s largest indoor ski-slopes. It covers an area of 22,500m2, about the same size as three football fields, and the temperature is a constant -1℃ to -2℃. However, the strangest thing about this place is that it’s in the middle of the desert! It’s called Ski Dubai and the outside temperatures can rise to more than 40℃! It sounds crazy, but it just shows how serious people are about having fun. We spend huge sums on sports facilities. We pay our sports stars ridiculous amounts of money. And we spend hour after hour playing games! I wonder if all thesports-lovers and game-players in the world aren’t a little crazy. I know I am. I was once driving past a football field where some kids were playing. I turned to watch and crashed my car. I know it’s stupid but I can do nothing about it. As someone said, “Football isn’t a matter of life and death. It’s much more important than that!”Of course, it isn’t that important really. No game is. But the problem is that games are addictive (使人上瘾的). From the tennis court to the golf course, you’ll find participants and spectators who can’t live without the drug of their choice. It could be a good thing. After all, despite being addictive, it’s true that sports and games help us to relax.Maybe if it wasn’t for sport, our societies would be more violent. Perhaps sport is a substitute for war? It’s hard to think of a quieter, more peaceful game than chess, and what’s the objective? Capturing your opponent’s king. And surely, it’s better to have wars in athletics stadiums rather than on battlefields. What’s more, playing is natural. Kittens chase balls of wool and puppies pretend to fight. Games help us perfect our skills and prepare us for the serious contest of survival. But do all games help us relax and stay away from violence? What about puter games? A recent article in New Scientist suggests that playing violent video games (and most of them are extremely violent) makes people more aggressive and more likely to mit violent crimes. Are these games a rehearsal (彩排) for life or a substitute for life? Do we play instead of facing up to our real problems? I don’t know. But what I do know is that I need a break. Something to help me relax. Skiing would be nice. I wonder how much it costs to get to Dubai?77. According to the author, the most surprising thing about Ski Dubai is its _____.A. slopesB. sizeC. locationD. facilities78. The expression “the drug of their choice” in the 3rd paragraph refers to _____.A. the game they are keen onB. the medicine they takeC. the activity good for healthD. the sport in place of war79. Which of the following statements does the author most probably agree with?A. Sports stars should be paid more to play well.B. Sports are more important than life and death.C. Chess is too peaceful to be considered a sport.D. Games can make one relaxed as well as violent.80. What does the author mainly talk about in the passage?A. The relationship between games and crimes.B. Human natural craze for having fun with games.C. Serious concerns about time that is spent on games.D. Real problems facing game players in everyday life.V. TranslationDirections: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.1.你讲话的方式有时比你讲话的内容更重要。

2019学年高一下学期开学考试英语试题第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AAfternoon tea became popular about 150 years ago, when rich ladies invited their friends to their houses for a cup of afternoon tea. Usually taken in the late afternoon, it is also called “low tea” as it is served at a low table. Since this isn’t a meal, but rather like a late afternoon snack, finger foods such as sandwiches, scones and pastries are common. People are not only taking tea to get what their bodies need or satisfy hunger, but to take time to relax, chat and enjoy the company of dear friends. In England, the traditional time for tea is four or five o’clock in the afternoon and no one stays after seven o’clock. This very British tradition is said to have been started around 1840 by Duchess Anna Maria, wife of the 7th Duke of Bedford, England. During the long time between an early lunch and a very late dinner, she experienced what she called “a sinking feeling” at about 4 or 5 in the afternoon. So she asked her serving girl to brin g her a pot of tea, a little bread and butter and cake in her room. She found this arrangement so pleasing that she began asking her friends to join her.High tea, a team often mixed with afternoon tea, usually takes the place of supper. In the past the British working population did not have afternoon tea. They had meals at about noon and after work between five and seven o’clock. The table would be set with dinner foods like meat, bread, butter, potatoes, cheese and of course tea. It was called “high tea” because it was eaten at a high dining table rather than a low tea table. How much do people enjoy the afternoon tea moment? As a famous writer named Henry James said, “There are few hours in life agreeable than the hour dedicated to (献给)the ceremony known as afternoon tea.”1. Who started the tradition of afternoon tea?A. Duchess Anna Maria.B. The 7th Duke of Bedford.C. Henry James.D. Some unknown working people.2. What does the underlined phrase “a sinking feeling” refer to?A. A feeling of being bored.B. To tell us that afternoon tea is in fact a ceremony.C. To show how popular afternoon tea is.D. To show the difference between afternoon tea and high tea.【答案】1. A 2. B 3. C【解析】本文介绍下午茶的由来。

But those who dislike travelling also have some reasons.Travelling,in my opinion, does more good than harm. Most importantly,it broadens our mind.We can get in touch with other civilizations, cultures, customs and ideas.Through history, most people travelled because of necessity(必要性)---not for pleasure.People travelled just in order to remain alive. They searched for food to eat or places to live in.They sometimes ran away from enemies. This is not to say that no one ever travelled just for the fun of it.In ancient times, for example, rich Romans travelled all the way to Greece to take part in the Olympic Games, and festivals.Of course, some people decided to travel just out of curiosity(好奇心). They wanted to find out what it looked like beyond the horizon(地平线).Also business travel has been going on for centuries.Traders could not only make money but also learn to speak several languages and be introduced to different cultures. So,travelling does enrich our mind and draw new ideas to us.There is no doubt that we can get much from it.13.According to the passage,in the past most people travelled________.A.for funB.for knowledgeC.to get experiencesD.to make a living14.How many reasons for travelling are mentioned in Paragraph3?A.Three.B.Four.C.Five.D.Six.15.In the writer's opinion, travelling can be________.A.expensiveB.funnyC.helpfulD.tiring第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

In the past three years, I have bee accustomed to this fast in American life, for I believe that it is a creative and necessary part of an industrial society. I, too, want to improve my life-style and to buy better products, so I look to advertising to show me how to do it.Deciding what to believe in advertising, however, is not easy. It seems to me that a person must purchase things with a lot of care. As a consumer, I want to get the best for my money, but I really have to understand the techniques of advertising. Otherwise, manufacturers will be able to sell me anything, no matter what its quality may be.More and more people are being conscious, like me, of the ways in which advertising can affect them. The creative aspects of mercials, for instance, often cover up defects or problem in products. I have learned this well, since I have made purchases and lost money because the items were of poor quality. The future of advertising most likely will involve a much greater degree of public participation. I intend to bee involved in consumer groups that want to protect people from misleading advertising. In the future, if consumers like me really care about the quality, maybe advertisers will begin to care more about what they are trying to sell.66. American artists bee acquainted with the new art on their trips to Paris and at the exhibitions in the famous New York gallery “291” of the photographer Alfred Stieglitz. But most important in the spread of the modern movements in the United States was the sensational Armory Show of 192-13 in New York, in which the works of a number of progressive American painters were shown.Several of the American modernists who were influenced by the Armory Show found the urban landscapes, especially New York, an appealing subject. pared with the works of the realist painters, the works of American modernists were much removed from the actual appearance of the city; they were more interested in the “feel ” of the “Ash Can School” and the later realists were still tied to nineteent h-centuryor earlier styles, while the early modernists shared in the international breakthroughs of the art of the twentieth century. The greatest of these breakthroughs was Cubism, developed most fully in France between 1907 and 1914, which brought about a major revolution in Western painting. It overturned the rational tradition that had been built upon since the Renaissance. In Cubism, natural forms were broken down analytically into geometric shapes. No longer was a clear differentiation made between the figure and the background of a painting: objects represented and the surface on which they were painted became one. The Cubism abandoned the conventional single vantage point of the viewer, and objects depicted from multiple viewpoints were shown at the same time.70. Modernism.D C C A(C)Crows are probably the most frequently met and easily identifiable members of the native fauna of the United States. The great number of tales, legends, and myths about these birds indicates that people have been exceptionally interested in them for a long time. On the other hand, when it es to substantive — particularly behavioral —information, crows are less well known than many parably mon species and, for that matter, not a few quite unmon ones: the endangered California condor, to cite one obvious example. There are practical reasons for this.Crows are notoriously poor and aggravating subjects for field research. Keen observers and quick learners, they are astute about the intentions of other creatures, including researchers, and adept at avoiding them. Because they are so numerous, active, and monochromatic, it is difficult to distinguish one crow from another. Bands, radio transmitters, or other identifying devices can be attached to them, but this of course requires catching live crows, who are among the wariest and most untrappable of birds.Technical difficulties aside, crow research is daunting because the ways of these birds are so plex and various. As preeminent is generalists, members of this species ingeniously exploit a great range of habitats and resources, and they can quickly adjust to changes in their circumstances. Being so educable, individual birds have markedly different interests and inclinations, strategies and scams. For example, one pet crow learned how to let a dog out of its kennel by pulling the pin on the door. When the dog escaped, the bird went into the kennel and ate its food.74. What is the main topic of the passage?A. The ways in which crows differ from other mon birdsB. The myths and legends about crowsC. The characteristics that make crows difficult to studyD. The existing methods for investigating crow behavior75. According to the first paragraph, what evidence is there that crows have interested people for a long time?A. The large number of stories about crows.B. The frequency with which crows are sightedC. The amount of research that has been conducted on crowsD. The ease with which crows are identified76. According to the second paragraph, crows are poor subjects for field researchfor all of the following reasons EXCEPTA. They can successfully avoid observers.B. They are hard to distinguish from one anotherC. They can be quite aggressive.D. They are difficult to catch.77.Which of the statements is supported by the passage?A. Crows have relatively long lives.B. Crows have keen vision.C. Crows are usually solitary.D. Crows are very intelligent.CACDSection CDirections: Read the passage carefully. In her life time she earned her country’s most highly acclaimed literary award, the Pulitzer Prize, and also the most prestigious form of literary recognition in the world, the Nobel Prize for Literature.Pearl S. Buck was almost a household word throughout much of her lifetime because of her prolific output, which consisted of some eighty-five published works, including several dozen novels, six collections of short stories, fourteen books for children, and more than a dozen works of nonfiction. When she was eighty years old, some twenty-five volumes were awaiting publication. Many of those books wereset in China, the land in which she spent so much of her life. Her books and her life served as a bridge between the cultures of the East and the West. As the product of those two cultures she became, as she described herself, “mentally bifocal”. Her unique background made her into an unusually interesting and versatile human being. As we examine the life of Pearl Buck, we cannot help but be aware that we are in fact meeting three separate people: a wife and mother, an internationally famous writer, and a humanitarian and philanthropist. One cannot really get to know Pearl Buck without learning about each of the three. Though honored in her lifetime with the William Dean Howell Medal of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in addition to the Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes, Pearl Buck as a total human being, not only a famous author, is a captivating subject of study.78.Why Pearl Buck was able to write extensively about a very different culture such as the East was partly because___________________________________________________.She was born in America and lived in China.79.One of the reasons for her being so famous of her time was______________________. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let’s fi nd out more about going to a new school. Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Please pay close attentionYou might already know a lot of people in your classes on th e first day, but it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be gladyou did, and so will your new friend!Seeing friends you haven’t seen in a while can make t he first day a good one. You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers(运动鞋). It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll be needing. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don’t have time in the morning.56. What is the main idea of the passage?A. It may cost us much more to live a green life.B. Going green is much simpler than people think.C. A lot of things can be reused in our life.D. People are living a much better life than before.C Much of the water we use comes from snow. Melting snow provides water for rivers, electric power centers and agricultural crops. In the western United States, mountain snow provides up to 75% of all surface water supplies.Snowfall helps to protect plants and some wild animals from cold, winter weather. Fresh snow is made largely of air trapped among the snow crystals(水晶体). Because the air has trouble moving, the movement of heat is greatly reduced.Snow also is known to influence the movement of sound waves. When there is fresh snow on the ground, the surface of the snow takes in, or absorbs(吸收), sound waves. However, snow can become hard and flat as it becomes older or if there have been strong winds. Then the snow's surface will help to send back sound waves. Under these conditions, sounds may seem clearer and travel farther.Generally, the color of snow and ice appears white. This is because the light we see from the sun is white. Most natural materials take in some sunlight. This gives them their color. However, when light travels from air to snow, some light is sent back, or reflected. Snow crystals have many surfaces to reflect sunlight. Yet the snow does take in a little sunlight. It is this light that gives snow its white appearance.Sometimes, snow or ice may appear to be blue. The blue light is the product of a long travel path through the snow or ice. In simple terms, think of snow or ice as a filter(过滤器). A filter is designed to reject some substances, while permitting others to pass through. In the case of snow, all the light makes it through if the snow is only a centimeter thick. If it is a meter or more thick, however, blue light often can be seen.64. How many functions of snow are discussed in the passage?A.One B.Two C.Three D.Four65. Why does snowfall help to protect plants from cold?A.Because snow crystals contain heat.B.Because snow crystals have air in them.C.Because snow crystals are easy to blow away.D.Because snow crystals send out heat when melting.66. It can be inferred that ______.A.hard snow is better in protecting wild animals than fresh snowB.hard snow provides less water than fresh snowC.fresh snow is better in taking in sound waves than hard snowD.fresh snow is better in sending sound waves than hard snow67. The color of snow and ice appears white because snow crystals________.A.send back all of the sunlight B.send back none of the sunlightC.take in most of the sunlight D.take in some of the sunlightD Like many children,Heather studied hard, did her homework and played sports after school.
