2023年七年级上册英语作业本人教版

2023年七年级上册英语作业本人教版

2023年七年级上册英语作业本人教版全文共6篇示例,供读者参考篇1So, here we go with my seventh-grade English homework and textbook. It's a big deal, you know? We're not little kids anymore, and English class is getting more serious. But I'm ready for it, or at least I think I am!The first thing I noticed about our new English textbook is how thick it is. Like, whoa! It's almost as big as my math book. And you know how boring math can be, so I was a little worried that English would be just as bad. But then I started flipping through the pages, and it's actually pretty cool. There are lots of colorful pictures and illustrations, which is always a plus. And the topics seem interesting, too. We're going to learn about different cultures, famous people, and even some scientific stuff. I'm especially excited about the unit on space exploration. Who doesn't love learning about rockets and aliens and all that crazy stuff? The first few units are a review of what we learned in sixth grade, which is good because I kind of forgot some of it over thesummer. But it's not too basic, either. We're already starting to learn more complex grammar rules and vocabulary words.Speaking of vocabulary, that's one of the things I'm a little nervous about. There are so many new words to memorize in each unit. But our teacher gave us some tips on how to remember them, like making flashcards and using the words in sentences. I guess it's not too bad if you stay on top of it.The reading passages in the textbook are pretty interesting, too. They're not just boring stories about some kid's day at school or whatever. We're reading about different countries, famous inventors, and even some folktales from around the world. It's like getting a little taste of different cultures without having to leave the classroom. And then there are the exercises and activities. Some of them are kind of fun, like the ones where we have to role-play conversations or make up stories using the new vocabulary words. Others are a little more boring, like the grammar drills and fill-in-the-blank exercises. But I guess those are important, too, if we want to really learn the language. The homework is probably the worst part, though. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind doing a little bit of homework here and there. But sometimes it feels like we're drowning in it. There arevocabulary lists to memorize, grammar exercises to complete, and even short essays to write. And that's just for English! Add in all the other subjects, and it can get overwhelming sometimes. But I try to stay positive and just take it one day at a time. Plus, our teacher is really nice and helpful, so if I'm ever struggling with something, she's always there to explain it again or give me some extra practice.Overall, I'd say the seventh-grade English textbook and homework are pretty decent. Sure, there are some parts that are a little boring or challenging, but that's just part of learning a new language. And who knows, maybe by the end of the year, I'll be speaking and writing in English like a pro!Or maybe not. But at least I'll have tried my best and learned a lot along the way. That's what really matters, right? Wish me luck!篇2My New English TextbookHi there! I'm really excited to tell you about my new English textbook for 7th grade. It's the first semester edition from thePeople's Education Press, also known as the PEP Edition. I just started using it a few weeks ago and it's been a lot of fun so far!The book is pretty big and has lots of colorful pictures and illustrations. That makes the lessons more interesting and easier to follow along. On the cover, there's a friendly looking cartoon kid waving. I think that's supposed to represent me and my classmates learning English together.Inside the book, each unit has a different theme. The first unit was called "Hello" and had dialogues about introducing yourself, talking about ages and birthdays, and so on. We practiced greeting each other and asking simple questions. It was a good way to get warmed up after the summer vacation. The next unit was "My Favorites" where we learned vocabulary words for different hobbies, sports, foods, and fun activities. I really enjoyed that one because I got to talk about my favorite basketball team, music, and video games! We also did some fun roleplays pretending to interview each other about our likes and dislikes. But my favorite unit so far has probably been "A Happy Family." In that section, we read stories and had conversations about family members, household chores, and weekend plans. I wrote a short paragraph describing my parents, little brother, and our lazy cat. Then I drew a picture of us all to go along with it. My teacher said she really liked my creative work! The readings in the book use pretty simple vocabulary and grammar at my level. But they also slowly introduce some new words and sentence patterns each time. That makes it challenging enough to learn new things, but not so hard that I get frustrated. There are lots of examples and practice exercises to help reinforce what we're learning. After every few units, there is a review section that goes over all the key points from that part of the book. We play language games, do crossword puzzles, and have little tests to make sure we're remembering everything. I appreciate those review sections because it helps me solidify what I've learned before moving on.One part of the textbook I really like is called "Learning Strategies." It has tips for things like how to effectively memorize new vocabulary words, methods for taking good notes, tricks for overcoming speaking anxiety, and more. Those strategy lessons have already helped me a lot with my English studies. The textbook also includes supplemental materials like audio recordings, videos, games, and interactive apps that go along with each unit. My teacher projects the videos in class sometimesas a way to immerse us in real conversational English. And I can use the audio tracks at home to practice listening and repeating after the speakers.Overall, I've been really happy with this new English textbook so far. It covers a wide range of practical, real-world topics that are relevant to my life as a middle schooler. The layout is colorful and engaging, the practice activities are plentiful, and I feel like I'm making steady progress toward becoming a better English speaker, reader, and writer.I'm just a couple months into using this book, but I'm already excited to continue working through it over the rest of the school year. English is one of my favorite subjects, and this textbook has made the learning process really enjoyable so far. I feel like I'm building a solid foundation that will help me a lot as my English studies become more advanced in the years ahead.Well, that's my review of the 7th grade PEP English textbook! Let me know if you have any other questions. I better get back to working on those exercises from Unit 5 on transportation and travel words. Learning a new language is hard work, but it's also a fun adventure! Thanks for reading!篇3My 7th Grade English Homework BookWow, can you believe we're already in 7th grade? It feels like just yesterday we were those tiny kids walking into our first day of primary school. Now we're the big kids on campus! This year is going to be a blast, but also a lot of hard work. My biggest challenge? English class.Don't get me wrong, I actually really like learning English. It's such a cool language and knowing it will open up so many opportunities for me in the future. But man, the homework this year is no joke! We got these massive new textbooks on the first day that must weigh like 5 kilos each. My back was sore just carrying it home from school. The homework book itself is kind of intimidating at first glance. It's this thick stack of pages filled with all kinds of reading passages, grammar exercises, writing prompts, you name it. When my teacher passed it out, I couldn't help but groan inside. Surviving this book is going to be an uphill battle!Despite the heaviness and intensity, I have to admit the book seems well-designed overall. The lessons are organized really clearly into different units with specific topics. Unit 1 was all about daily routines and personal introductions. We had to write paragraphs describing our morning schedules, favorite foods, hobbies, and that kind of thing. It was actually kind of fun to narrate the mundane details of my life in English! The reading passages in that first unit were engaging too. There were some fun narratives about summer adventures and blog posts written by other students our age. My favorite was probably the one about a girl's disastrous first attempt at baking cookies by herself. I could totally relate to that feeling of kitchen failure! The passages weren't too daunting length-wise either, which was a relief. The writing exercises are probably the sections I dread most. It's one thing to construct simple sentences, but crafting a whole paragraph or essay is like climbing Mount Everest for me in English. We haven't gotten to too many big writing assignments yet, thank goodness. Although I do have a nagging feeling the "persuasive essay" unit lurking in the future pages of this book is going to be my downfall. At least the book managers to squeeze in some morelight-hearted activities between the grueling skills-building ones. Every few sections, there's a fun crossword or word search. My personal favorite is toward the back of the book where you use English idioms to fill in speech bubbles for comics. Studying isn'tso bad when I get to make people say wacky things like "My dog ate my homework!" or "It's raining cats and dogs outside!"As taxing as this English book has been already, I know I'm truly lucky to have these opportunities to learn at such a high level. Kids my age in some parts of the world don't even go to school at all or have access to quality educational materials. While I may groan about verb conjugations, at least I'm being challenged to expand my abilities. It doesn't hurt either that my English teacher this year is pretty awesome so far. You can tell she's really passionate about her subject and wants us to master it too. She keeps the lessons engaging by having us play games, giving candy rewards, letting us listen to English songs, and not getting too frustrated when we butcher the pronunciation. Having a supportive, spirited teacher makes powering through those dense homework chapters way more bearable. So while this 2,000 page beast of a book may be daunting, I'm trying to embrace the challenge. If I put in the hard work, my English skills are going to level up like crazy by the end of the semester. That stuttering, stammering kid who could barely string together basic sentences back in 3rd grade is going to be a distant memory. Just you wait, by June I'll be a smooth-talking,idiom-slinging, grammar ninja! Okay... that may be an overly ambitious goal. But hey, at least this book is getting me one step closer to becoming more fearless with the English language. Wish me luck surviving it!篇4My New English TextbookHey there! I'm a 7th grader and I just started using this brand new English textbook for the first half of the school year. It's the People's Education Edition textbook and I have to say, it's pretty cool so far!The book itself looks really nice. It has a colorful cover with some fun graphics and the title "Go Ahead! English for Junior High School Students" in big letters. When you open it up, the pages are nice and thick with a fresh book smell. There are lots of pictures, diagrams, and fun fonts used throughout to make it look vibrant and engaging. I like how it's very visual and not just pages of plain text.In the first few units, we've been reviewing basic conversational English - stuff like greetings, introducing yourself, talking about your family, describing your daily routine, and so on. The lessons start with some dialogues between cartooncharacters to demonstrate the language in context. The dialogues are pretty funny and relatable since the characters are students around my age dealing with typical school situations. After the dialogues, there are vocabulary lists highlighting the key words and phrases from that unit. The book has these neat features where you can scan a QR code to hear the pronunciation or play little games to practice the vocab. My favorite is the one where you have to smash the right translation with a hammer! The vocabulary sections make sure you really nail down the essential words before moving on.Then we practice using the language through different activities and readings. There are fill-in-the-blank exercises, short answer questions, reading comprehension passages followed by multiple choice questions, and other interactive tasks. I really like the readings because they expose me to longer contexts beyond just memorizing phrases. Some of the passages are cultural experiences from students in other countries, which makes it more interesting to me.Throughout each unit, there are also lots of grammar notes that explain the sentence structures and language rules we're learning. The explanations are pretty clear and they give goodexamples. I can definitely feel my grammar knowledge improving from working through these units. What's really neat though, is that there are dedicated sections where English language knowledge is connected to other subjects I'm studying. For example, one unit had a Physics reading about the forces involved in different sports. Another one explored some Geographic concepts through discussing world cultures and traditions. It's a clever way to integrate my English practice with other academic content. At the end of each unit, there's a self-assessment test where I can check my understanding of everything I've learned so far. These have been really helpful for identifying gaps in my knowledge before moving forward. There's also a section with suggestions for extended learning, like trying to write a short story using the unit's language or finding English music videos related to the topics.Overall, I'm quite satisfied with this new English textbook so far. The lessons are engaging and multi-dimensional, incorporating reading, writing, listening, and speaking practice in creative ways. The real-life contexts and interdisciplinary connections make me feel like I'm not just studying aimless phrases, but actually picking up functional English abilities. Andlet's be real - the interactive features, games, and modern look of the textbook just make it a lot more fun to spend time with compared to those old, boring books my older siblings used!I can't wait to dive deeper into this textbook over the rest of the semester. Becoming fluent in English is so important these days, and I really think this curriculum is going to give me a strong foundation. Who knows, maybe I'll be bragging about my English skills and crediting this awesome textbook when I'm a successful polyglot world traveler someday! For now though, I've got homework to get back to. Laters!篇5My 7th Grade English WorkbookHi there! I'm a 7th grader and I wanted to tell you all about the English workbook we're using this year. It's from the People's Education Press and it's for the first semester of 7th grade. At first, I wasn't too excited about having to lug around another huge book in my backpack. But this one has actually been pretty cool so far!The book starts off pretty basic, reviewing a lot of the grammar and vocabulary we learned in 6th grade. Things like verb tenses, sentence structures, common words and phrases.I'm glad they included that review though, because it helped me remember stuff I had forgotten over the summer. The exercises are simple but get you practicing right away. After the review section, it really kicks into high gear with all kinds of new material. We've learned tons of new vocabulary words across different topic areas like school, hobbies, food, travel, and more. I really like how they introduce the new words through stories and dialogues. It makes it much easier to remember the meanings and usage compared to just memorizing lists. The grammar has been a good challenge too. We've covered all kinds of complex tenses, conditional sentences, relative clauses, and more. I'll be honest, some of it has gone over my head at times. But the examples and practice exercises have really helped solidify the concepts. My teacher is great about explaining things in a way we can understand too. What I maybe like most though are all the reading passages and comprehension activities. The passages are super interesting and cover a huge range of topics - everything from biographies of famous people to descriptions of different cultures around the world. After reading each passage, we have to answer comprehension questions, analyze the author's perspective, make inferences, and even debate the topics as a class. It really gets us thinking critically about the material. The workbook also has sections focusing on the other skills like listening, speaking, and writing. For listening, there are recordings of dialogues, passages, and lectures that we have to answer questions about. Working on speaking has been one of the harder parts for me since I'm quite shy, but the activities have helped break me out of my shell. We've done things likerole-plays, group discussions, and even some drama/comedy sketches! As for writing, we've practiced all the different forms like emails, stories, essays, reviews, and more. The book provides great structures and examples to model our writing after. One of my favorite activities was writing a short mystery story and having classmates try to guess the endings. We also wrote restaurant reviews after a fun field trip to try different foods around the city.Overall, this workbook has made learning English a lot more engaging than I expected. I used to think it would be mostly just boring grammar drills and vocabulary lists. But the variety of readings, real-world practice activities, and opportunities for creative expression have made the subject feel useful and alive. But all-in-all, I've been really happy with this 7th grade English workbook for first semester so far. It's helped me make big strides in strengthening all my language skills - reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I've learned tons of practical vocabulary and grammar. And the engaging material has made me even more excited to continue building my English abilities.I can't wait to see what new stuff the second semester book has in store! Hopefully, it keeps things fun and interactive while challenging us with more advanced concepts. If this year's books are any indication, my English foundation will be rock-solid heading into 8th grade. Thanks for letting me share my thoughts! Let me know if you have any other questions.篇6Of course! Here's an essay written from the perspective of a middle school student, around 2,000 words in length, about the 7th-grade English textbook and workbook for the first semester, using the PEP (People's Education Press) version. The language used is English.School Life and Learning EnglishHey there! My name is Lily, and I'm a 7th-grade student at Greenville Middle School. This year, we've been using a newEnglish textbook and workbook, and I have to say, it's been quite an experience! Let me tell you all about it.First off, the textbook itself is pretty thick and heavy. When I first got it, I was like, "Whoa, this thing weighs a ton!" But I soon realized that it's packed with all sorts of interesting lessons and reading materials. The best part? It's got loads of colorful pictures and illustrations that make learning English feel a bit more fun and engaging. Now, let's talk about the workbook. This is where things can get a little... well, let's just say "challenging." The workbook exercises are no joke! They cover everything from grammar drills to writing prompts, and sometimes I feel like my brain is going to explode trying to figure them all out. But you know what? That's a good thing! It means I'm really pushing myself and learning a whole lot.Speaking of learning, one of the coolest things about our new English materials is the emphasis on culture and real-life situations. The lessons aren't just boring lists of vocabulary words and grammar rules (although there's plenty of that too). Instead, they try to teach us how to use English in practical, everyday contexts. Like how to order food at a restaurant, or how to introduce yourself to someone new.And let's not forget about the listening and speaking sections! These are always a highlight for me. We get to listen to native English speakers having conversations, and then we practice those dialogues ourselves. It's a bit nerve-wracking at first, but it's so helpful for improving my pronunciation and building confidence when speaking English. Now, I won't lie to you – there are times when I feel completely overwhelmed by all the new material and exercises we're covering. But that's when I remind myself that learning a new language takes time, patience, and a lot of hard work. And you know what? It's totally worth it in the end.Just the other day, I was able to help my mom understand the instructions on a product she bought because they were written in English. And a few weeks ago, I impressed my dad by translating a movie we were watching together. Moments like those make me feel so proud of how far I've come in my English studies. So, while the 7th-grade English textbook and workbook can be challenging at times, I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow in such a structured and engaging way. Who knows, maybe in a few years, I'll be fluent enough to travel abroad or even pursue a career that requires proficiency in English. For now, though, I'll just focus on tackling one lesson and one exercise at a time. Because at the end of the day, that's what it's all about – taking things step by step, making mistakes, and learning from them. And hey, if all else fails, at least I'll have some killer arm muscles from lugging that heavy textbook around!。

状元坊 全程突破 导练测 英语 五年级 上册 大字护眼

状元坊全程突破导练测英语五年级上册大字护眼全文共3篇示例,供读者参考篇1The Zhuangyuanfang All-Round Breakthrough books are pretty famous at my school. All the smart kids and their parents seem to love them. I have to admit, when my mom first bought me the English one for 5th grade, I wasn't too excited. It's a big, thick book and looks kind of intimidating. But now that I've been working through it, I can see why it's so popular! The book starts off reviewing concepts from 4th grade, which was a nice refresher. Even though I'm in 5th grade now, there was definitely some stuff I had forgotten over the summer. The examples and explanations are really clear, with the key points highlighted. I like how it shows sample questions and walks through them step-by-step. It's helped reinforce the basic grammar rules and vocabulary. After the review section, it dives into all the new concepts for 5th grade English. I have to say, there's a lot of new stuff to learn this year! Things like perfect verb tenses, relative clauses, conditional sentences, and new vocabulary words galore. Thebook does a great job thoroughly explaining it all. The language is easy to understand and it gives lots of examples for each new grammar point and vocabulary set.One part I really like are the comics and dialogues it uses to illustrate the lessons. They make the concepts more fun and relatable compared to just dry explanations. And because the dialogues are casual conversations, it helps me see how the grammar and vocabulary can be used in real life situations. That's helped a lot in getting me to start using some of the new words and sentence structures myself instead of just recognizing them.In addition to the clear instruction, I also appreciate how the book has a ton of practice questions and exercises. Each lesson has 10-15 questions reviewing what was taught. I've started making flashcards or notes for anything I get wrong so I can really master it. There are also regular review sections that combine previous lessons. It's great re-inforcement through spaced repetition.About halfway through the book, it shifts from just building up knowledge through lessons and practice to getting into actual test preparation. It has sample tests resembling the real exams we'll take, both for EnglishProficiency Tests and academic achievement tests. Being able to take those practice tests hasbeen so valuable. It's helped me get used to the test format, timing, instructions, and types of questions. I feel way more prepared now than if I had just studied the lessons. The book also gives great test-taking tips and strategies throughout. Things like managing time wisely, process of elimination, identifying question types, and avoiding careless mistakes. I've started applying those strategies to all my practice tests and homework. My scores have definitely improved! What also makes the Zhuangyuanfang books unique is the large font and eye protection layout. I have to admit, as much as I love reading, staring at pages of tiny text for hours can really strain my eyes. But this book uses a nice big font size that's much easier on the eyes for longer periods. The spacing between lines is generous too. And the paper has an anti-glare coating to reduce shine and reflections. It makes doing all the exercises and practice tests so much more comfortable. My only real complaint about the book is the sheer size and weight of it. This thing is a brick! Over 500 pages long and must weigh like 3 or 4 pounds. It's pretty unwieldy to carry around or hold up for long periods. I really have to use a desk or table when working through lessons and exercises. Holding it on my lap is too uncomfortable after awhile. But overall, I'm enormously glad my mom invested in the Zhuangyuanfang 5th Grade English book. Sure, it was pricey, but the quality instruction and materials have been worth it. Between the well-explained lessons, abundant practice, test prep, and eye protection, I feel way more confident about English class this year. If your parents haven't gotten you this book yet, I'd seriously recommend asking for it. Studying is so much easier when you have a great guide like this!篇2The "Top Student Lane" English study guide is a great resource for us 5th graders preparing for our exams. The large print is really helpful for my eyes, especially after long hours of studying. The books cover all the key grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and test strategies we need to master for the big English exam at the end of the year. One aspect I really appreciate is how the book breaks everything down into easy-to-follow steps and concepts. The grammar lessons start from the basics like parts of speech and sentence structure. They use lots of examples to illustrate the rules and patterns in a way that sticks in my brain. There are also plenty of practice exercises after each grammar point to reinforce what I've learned. The vocabulary sections are awesome for expanding my English word power. The words are grouped into logical themes like animals, school subjects, descriptions and so on. There are visuals and mnemonic tricks to help cement the new terms in my memory. I've found the vocabulary reinforcement activities like word searches, fill in the blanks and making sentences to be really effective for active recall. For me, the reading comprehension is often the trickiest part of any English exam. This book provides a wide variety of passages about different topics like science, history, culture and more. The passages get progressively longer and more complex as the book goes on. After each one, there are multiple choice and short answer questions that test different reading skills - identifying main ideas, making inferences, understanding vocabulary in context, and so forth. I find the teaching tips and strategies for approaching each type of question to be invaluable. The "Top Student Lane" guide doesn't just stop at content review though. It also dedicates whole chapters to test-taking techniques and strategies. These sections teach things like managing time wisely, eliminating incorrect answers through logical reasoning, avoiding careless mistakes, and stayingfocused during the grueling exams. The practice tests at the end are super helpful for putting everything I've learned into real exam simulations.Overall, I think this is an amazing all-in-one resource to help any 5th grade student thoroughly prepare for their English exams. The content is comprehensive yet digestible. The teaching methods make even grammar feel fun and engaging. With consistent practice from this book, I'm confident I can achieve amazing results on my English tests and showcase my true skills. It's been an incredibly effective study guide so far!篇3The "Zhuangyuanfang Comprehensive Breakthrough Practice Tests" book for English in 5th grade has been an invaluable resource for me this school year. With its large font that is easy on the eyes and comprehensive practice tests, it has helped me solidify my English skills and prepare for exams. One of the best things about this book is how it covers all the key areas we need to master - vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, writing, and more. The vocabulary sections are fantastic for building my word power. They go beyond just rote memorization by using the words in fun example sentences andhaving me use them in different contexts. This has really helped the new vocabulary stick in my mind. The grammar units are so helpful too. English grammar can be really confusing with all the tenses, plurals, articles, and other crazy rules. But this book breaks it down step-by-step with clear explanations and lots of practice questions. I used to get mixed up between present perfect and simple past all the time, but now I have a solid understanding thanks to this book. The grammar quizzes identify my weak areas so I know what to study harder. However, my favorite part of the book is probably the reading comprehension. The passages are really interesting - from stories about things kids my age experience to fascinating articles about science, culture, and history. The questions really make me think beyond just surface-level understanding too. I've learned how to analyze context clues, make inferences, identify main ideas and details, and so much more. My comprehension skills have improved a ton!For writing practice, the book provides sample compositions on different styles like narratives, persuasive essays, and more. These examples along with rubrics and checklists have been invaluable for improving my writing structure and technique. The book even has me score my own work, which has been amazingfor self-evaluation. I can clearly see where my strengths and weaknesses are in areas like word choice, organization, grammar, etc.The mixed practice tests that combine all the skills together have been super helpful too. They give me a feel for what actual exams will be like and let me apply everything I've learned in an integrated way. Getting marked by my teacher has shown my growth areas to focus on.Overall, I'm so grateful we're using the "Zhuangyuanfang Comprehensive Breakthrough Practice Tests" book this year. Its comprehensive coverage, systematic practice, and guidance from my teacher using this resource have really taken my English skills to new levels. My confidence has grown so much. I'm able to understand, communicate, and express myself more clearly and effectively than ever before. Thanks to this book, I feel thoroughly prepared for any English exam that comes my way!。

Logical database design is based on a specific data model, but independent of all other physical considerations. Physical database design constructs a description of the implementation of the database on secondary storage (see Section 9.6.3).10.7 What are the main purposes of data modeling and identify the criteria for an optimal datamodel.T he two main purposes of data modeling are to assist in the understanding of the meaning (semantics) of the data and to facilitate communication about the information requirements (see Section 9.6.2).10.8 Identify the stage(s) where it is appropriate to select a DBMS and describe an approach toselecting the ‘best’ DBMS.Physical database design is tailored to a specific DBMS; therefore it is essential the DBMS is determined before the physical design phase can begin. Describe each fact-finding technique and identify the advantages and disadvantages of each.See Section 11.3.11.5 Describe the purpose of defining a mission statement and mission objectives for a databasesystem.M ission statement defines the major aims of the database system; the mission objectives identify the particular tasks that the database must support (see Section 11.4.2).11.6 What is the purpose of identifying the systems boundary for a database system?E nsures that all appropriate areas of the organization are supported by the database system(see Section 11.4.3).11.7 How does the contents of a users’ requirements specification differ from a systemsspecification?S ystems specification describes the any features to be included in the new database system such as networking and shared access requirements, performance requirements, and the levels of security required. On the other hand, the users’ requirements specification describes in detail the data to be held in the database and how the data is to be used (see Section 10.4.4).11.8 Describe one method to deciding whether to use either the centralized or view integrationapproach, or a combination of both when developing a database system for multiple user views.O ne way is to examine the overlap in the data used between the various user views (see, for example, Table 11.7).Exercises11.9 Assume that you are an employee of a consultancy company that specializes in the analysis, design, and implementation of database systems. A client has recently approached yourcompany with a view to implementing a database system, but they are not familiar with thedevelopment process.Task: You are required to present an overview of the fact-finding techniques that yourcompany intends to us e to support the development of the client’s database system. With thistask in mind, create a slide presentation and/or report that describes each fact-findingtechnique and how the fact-finding techniques will be used throughout the development of the database system. The client for this exercise and those that follow can be any one of thefictitious case studies given in Appendix B or some real company identified by you or yourprofessor. In preparing a slide presention or report about fact-finding techniques, students should coverthe five commonly used fact-finding techniques:Examining documentation Section 11.3.1, Table 11.2);Enterviewing (Section 11.3.2)Observing the enterprise in operation (Section 11.3.3)Research (Section 11.3.4)Questionnaires (Section 11.3.5)11.10Assume that you are an employee of a consultancy company that specializes in the analysis, design, and implementation of database systems. A client has recently approached yourcompany with a view to implementing a database system.Task: You are required to establish the database project through the early stages of theproject. With this task in mind, create a mission statement and mission objectives and high-level systems diagram for the client’s database system.Students will find it helpful to review the definition of a mission statement, mission objectives, and high-level systems diagram in Sections 11.4.2 and 11.4.3.11.11Assume that you are an employee of a consultancy company that specializes in the analysis, design, and implementation of database systems. A client has recently approached yourcompany with a view to implementing a database system. It has already been established that the client’s database system will support many different groups of users (user views).Task: You are required to identify how to best manage the requirements for these user views. With this task in mind, create a report that identifies high-level requirements for each userview and shows the relationship between the user views. Conclude the report by identifyingand justifying the best approach to managing the multi-user view requirements.Students should create documentation on the required views including a table documentingview relationships such as the one shown in Figure 11.7.Chapter 12 Entity-Relationship ModelingReview Questions12.1 Describe what entity types represent in an ER model and provide examples of entities with aphysical or conceptual existence. An entity type represents a group of ‘objects’ in the real world with t he same properties (see Section 12.1). Examples of entities with physical and conceptual existence are shown in Figure 12.2.12.2 Describe what relationship types represent in an ER model and provide examples of unary, binary, ternary, and quaternary relationships.A relationship type is a set of associations between one or more participating entity types (seeSection 12.2). Examples:Unary: Staff Supervise St aff (also called recursive relationship)Binary: Branch Has StaffTernary: Staff Registers Client at BranchQuaternary: Solicitor Arranges Bid with a Buyer supported by a Financial Institution.12.3 Describe what attributes represent in an ER model and provide examples of simple, composite,single-value, multi-value, and derived attributes.A n attribute represents a property of an entity or a relationship type (see Section 12.3).Examples:Simple: position or salary attribute of StaffComposite: address attribute composed of street, city, and postcode attributesSingle-valued: branchNo attribute of BranchMulti-valued: telNo attribute of BranchDerived: duration attribute of Lease, calculated from rentStart and rentFinishattributes.12.4 Describe what the multiplicity constraint represents for a relationship type.Multiplicity represents the number (or range) of possible occurrences of an entity type that may relate to a single occurrence of an associated entity type through a particular relationship (see Section 12.6).12.5 What are enterprise constraints and how does multiplicity model these constraints?E nterprise constraints are rules that the data in the database must conform to as specified byusers or database administrators of a database (see Section 4.3.4). Multiplicity constrains theway that entities are related –it is a representation of the policies (or business rules) established by the user or enterprise.12.6 How does multiplicity represent both the cardinality and the participation constraints on arelationship type?Multiplicity actually consists of two separate constraints (see Section 12.6.5):C ardinality– which describes the maximum number of possible relationship occurrences foran entity participating in a given relationship type.P articipation– which determines whether all or only some entity occurrences participate in a relationship.12.7 Provide an example of a relationship type with attributes. The relationship Newspaper Advertises PropertyForRent consists of two attributes: dateAdvert (representing the date the advert took place) and cost (representing the cost of the advert).12.8 Describe how strong and weak entity types differ and provide an example of each.A strong entity type is an entity type that is not existence-dependent on some other entity type(see Section 12.4). Examples of strong entity types are Branch, Staff, and PropertyForRent.A weak entity type is an entity type that is existence-dependent on some other entity type. Anexample of a weak entity type is Preference.12.9 Describe how fan and chasm traps can occur in an ER model and how they can be resolved.A fan trap occurs where a model represents a relationship between two entity types, but thepathway between certain entity occurrences is ambiguous. Resolve the fan trap by restructuring the original ER diagram to represent the correct association between these entities (see Section 12.7.1).A chasm trap occurs where a model suggests the existence of a relationship between entitytypes, but the pathway does not exist between certain entity occurrences. A chasm trap may occur where there are one or more relationships with optional participation. Resolve the chasm trap by identifying the missing relationship (see Section 12.7.2).Exercises12.10 Create an ER diagram for each of the following descriptions:(a) Each company operates four departments, and each department belongs to onecompany.(b) Each department in part (a) employs one or more employees, and each employeeworks for one department.(c) Each of the employees in part (b) may or may not have one or more dependants, andeach dependant belongs to one employee.(d) Each employee in part (c) may or may not have an employment history.(e) Represent all the ER diagrams described in (a), (b), (c), and (d) as a single ERdiagram.12.11 You are required to create a conceptual data model of the data requirements for a companythat specializes in IT training. The Company has 30 instructors and can handle up to 100 trainees per training session. The Company offers five advanced technology courses, each of which is taught by a teaching team of two or more instructors. Each instructor is assigned to a maximum of two teaching teams or may be assigned to do research. Each trainee undertakes one advanced technology course per training session.(a)Identify the main entity types for the company.(b)Identify the main relationship types and specify the multiplicity for each relationship.State any assumptions you make about the data.(c)Using your answers for (a) and (b), draw a single ER diagram to represent the datarequirements for the company.12.12 Read the following case study, which describes the data requirements for a video rentalcompany. The video rental company has several branches throughout the USA. The data held on each branch is the branch address made up of street, city, state, and zip code, and the telephone number. Each branch is given a branch number, which is unique throughout the company. Each branch is allocated staff, which includes a Manager. The Manager is responsible for the day-to-day running of a given branch. The data held on a member of staff is his or her name, position, and salary. Each member of staff is given a staff number, which is unique throughout the company. Each branch has a stock of videos. The data held on a video is the catalog number, video number, title, category, daily rental, cost, status, and the names of the main actors, and the director. The catalog number uniquely identifies each video. However, in most cases, there are several copies of each video at a branch, and the individual copies are identified using the video number. A video is given a category such as Action, Adult, Children, Drama, Horror, or Sci-Fi. The status indicates whether a specific copy of a video is available for rent. Before hiring a video from the company, a customer must first register as a member of a local branch. The data held on a member is the first and last name, address, and the date that the member registered at a branch. Each member is given amember number, which is unique throughout all branches of the company. Once registered, a member is free to rent videos, up to maximum of ten at any one time. The data held on each video rented is the rental number, the full name and number of the member, the video number, title, and daily rental, and the dates the video is rented out and date returned. The rental number is unique throughout the company.(a)Identify the main entity types of the video rental company.(b)Identify the main relationship types between the entity types described in (a) andrepresent each relationship as an ER diagram.(c)Determine the multiplicity constraints for each relationship described in (b).Represent the multiplicity for each relationship in the ER diagrams created in (b). (d)Identify attributes and associate them with entity or relationship types. Representeach attribute in the ER diagrams created in (c).(e)Determine candidate and primary key attributes for each (strong) entity type.(f)Using your answers (a) to (e) attempt to represent the data requirements of the videorental company as a single ER diagram. State any assumptions necessary to support your design.12.13 Create an ER model for each of the following descriptions:(a) A large organization has several parking lots, which are used by staff.(b) Each parking lot has a unique name, location, capacity, and number of floors (whereappropriate).(c) Each parking lot has parking spaces, which are uniquely identified using a space number.(d) Members of staff can request the use of a parking space. Each member of staff has aunique number, name, telephone extension number, and vehicle license number.(e) Represent all the ER models described in parts (a), (b), (c), and (d) as a single ER model.Provide any assumptions necessary to support your model.Chapter 13 Enhanced Entity-Relationship ModelingReview Questions13.1Describe what a superclass and a subclass represent.A superclass is an entity type that includes one or more distinct subgroupings of itsoccurrences, which require to be represented in a data model. A subclass is a distinct subgrouping of occurrences of an entity type, which require to be represented in a data model (see Section 13.1.1).13.2Describe the relationship between a superclass and its subclass. The relationship between superclass and subclass is 1:1, called a superclass/subclass relationship (see Section 13.1.2). Each member of a subclass is also a member of the superclass.13.3 Describe and illustrate using an example the process of attribute inheritance. An entity in a subclass represents the same ‘real world’ object as in the superclass, and may possess subclass-specific attributes, as well as those associated with the superclass. For example, a member of the SalesPersonnel subclass inherits all the attributes of the Staff superclass such as staffNo, name, position, and salary together with those specifically associated with the SalesPersonnel subclass such as salesArea and carAllowance (see Section13.1.3).13.4 What are the main reasons for introducing the concepts of superclasses and subclasses into anER model? There are two important reasons for introducing the concepts of superclasses and subclasses into an ER model. Firstly, it avoids describing similar concepts more than once, thereby saving time for the designer and making the ER diagram more readable. Secondly, it adds more semantic information to the design in a form that is familiar to many people. For example, the assertions th at ‘Manager IS-A member of staff’ and ‘flat IS-A type of property’, communicates significant semantic content in a concise form (see Section 13.1.2).13.5 Describe what a shared subclass represents and how does this concept relate to multipleinheritance.A subclass with more than one superclass is called a shared subclass. The subclass willinherit the attributes of all its superclasses (i.e. multiple inheritance).13.6 Describe and contrast the process of specialization with the process of generalization.Specialization is the process of maximizing the differences between members of an entity by identifying their distinguishing features. Generalization is the process of minimizing the differences between entities by identifying their common features. Specialization is a top-down approach whereas generalization is a bottom-up approach (see Sections 13.1.4 and13.1.5).13.7 Describe the two main constraints that apply to a specialization/generalization relationship. Two main constraints are: participation and disjoint constraints (see Section 13.1.6).13.8 Describe and contrast the concepts of aggregation and composition and provide an exampleof each.A ggregation r epresents a ‘has-a’ or ‘is-part-of’ relationship between entity types, where onerepr esents the ‘whole’ and the other ‘the part’. Composition is a specific form of aggregation that represents an association between entities, where there is a strong ownership and coincidental lifetime between the ‘whole’ and the ‘part’ (see Sections 13.2 and 13.3).Exercises13.9 Consider whether it is appropriate to introduce the enhanced concepts ofspecialization/generalization, aggregation, and/or composition for the case studies described in Appendix B.There are aspects of each case study that could be represented using specialization / generalization, aggregation, and/or composition. Some examples are given below:The University Accommodation Office Case StudyAccommodation as a superclass with subclasses StudentFlat and HallofResidence.Staff as a superclass with subclasses HallManager, AdministrativeAssistant, and Cleaner.Aggregation relationship between StudentFlat and FlatInspectionComposition relationship between StudentFlat and FlatRoomComposition relationship between HallofResidence and HallRoomThe EasyDrive School of Motoring Case StudyTest as a superclass with TheoryTest and PracticalTest as subclasses.Staff as a superclass with subclasses SeniorInstructor, Instructor, and Administrator.Composition relationship between Car and DrivingSchoolComposition relationship between Staff and DrivingSchoolThe Wellmeadows Hospital Case StudyS taff as a superclass with subclasses MedicalDirector, PersonnelOfficer, ChargeNurse, SeniorNurse, JuniorNurse, Doctor, and Auxiliary.Patient as a superclass with subclasses OutPatient and InPatient.Supply as a superclass with subclasses Surgical, Non-surgical, and Pharmaceutical.Aggregation relationship between Patient and PatientMedication.13.10 Consider whether it is appropriate to introduce the enhanced concepts ofspecialization/generalization, aggregation, and/or composition into the ER model for the case study described in Exercise 11.12. If appropriate, redraw the ER diagram as an EER diagram with the additional enhanced concepts.Could consider Manager as a specialization of the Staff entity. This would move the Manages relationship from Staff to the Manager subclass. However, the attributes for both entities would be the same and there would, therefore, seem to be no obvious advantage to introducing the Manager specialization.13.11Introduce specialization/generalization concepts into the ER model shown in Figure 13.11 anddescribed in Exercise 12.13 to show the following:(a) The majority of parking spaces are under cover and each can be allocated for use by amember of staff for a monthly rate.(b) Parking spaces that are not under cover are free to use when available.(c) Up to twenty covered parking spaces are available for use by visitors to the company. However, only members of staff are able to book out a space for the day of the visit. There isno charge for this type of booking, but the member of staff must provide the visitor’s vehiclelicense number.Chapter 14 NormalizationReview Questions14.1Describe the purpose of normalizing data. The purpose of normalization is to identify a suitable set of relations that support the data requirements of an enterprise. The characteristics of a suitable set of relations include the following:•the minimal number of attributes necessary to support the data requirements of the enterprise;•attributes with a close logical relationship (described as functional dependency) are found in the same relation;•minimal redundancy with each attribute represented only once with the important exception of attributes that form all or part of foreign keys (see Section 4.2.5), which are essential for thejoining of related relations. The benefit of using a database that has a suitable set of relations is that the database will be easier for the user to access and maintain the data, and take up minimal storage space on the computer.14.2 Discuss the alternative ways that normalization can be used to support database design.N ormalization is a formal technique that can be used at any stage of database design. However in this section we highlight two main approaches for using normalization as illustrated in Figure 14.1. Approach (1) shows how normalization can be used as a bottom-up standalone database design technique while Approach (2) shows how normalization can be used as a validation technique to check the structure of relations, which may have been created using a top-down approach such as ER modeling. No matter which approach is used the goal is the same that of creating a set of well-designed relations that meet the data requirements of the enterprise. Figure 14.1 shows examples of data sources that can be used for database design.Although, the users’ requirements specification (see Section 10.5) is the preferred data source, it is possible to design a database based on the information taken directly from other data sources such as forms and reports as illustrated in this chapter and the next. Figure 14.1 also shows that the same data source can be used for both approaches, however, although this is true in principle, in practice the approach taken is likely to be determined by the size, extent, and complexity of the database being described by the data sources and by the preference and expertise of the database designer. The opportunity to use normalization as a bottom-up standalone technique (Approach 1) is often limited by the level of detail that the database designer is reasonably expected to manage. However, this limitation is not applicable when normalization is used as a validation technique (Approach 2) as the database designer only。
