1The Big English Test is Coming!Wow, can you believe it's almost time for the big English test? My name's Xiaoming and I'm in the sixth grade at Yangpu Elementary School here in Shanghai. All my classmates and I have been studying really hard to get ready for the 2024 Shanghai Junior High School Academic Proficiency Test in English Listening and Speaking. It's a really important test that we have to pass to get into a good junior high school next year.My English teacher, Mrs. Wang, has been drilling us on listening comprehension for months now. We've practiced all kinds of different listening exercises - conversations, announcements, stories, you name it. The hardest part is trying to catch all the details when the audio goes by so fast. But Mrs. Wang says if we keep practicing, our ears will get used to it.I've also been working a ton on my speaking skills. We have to do all sorts of tasks for the speaking section - read passages out loud, answer questions, describe pictures, and even givewhole presentations! I used to be really shy about speaking English, but Mrs. Wang makes us practice conversations and speeches in class all the time. It was embarrassing at first, but now I'm getting much more confident. The test is broken into morning and afternoon sections over two days. I'm honestly a little nervous about having to perform at my best for that long. Mrs. Wang says as long as we get enough sleep and eat a good breakfast, we'll be fine. She's been giving us tons of practice tests to get us ready for the real thing. My parents have been really supportive, driving me to weekend cram classes and buying me English learning apps. Sometimes I get frustrated with how much work it is, but they keep encouraging me. They know how important this test is for getting into one of the best junior highs in the city. With their help and Mrs. Wang's lessons, I'm hoping to ace it!It's kind of crazy that this one test could basically decide my whole educational path. If I do well, doors will open to amazing schools. If I don't...well, I don't want to think about that possibility! No pressure, right? At least I'm not in this alone - all my friends are just as stressed. We're supporting each other and doing study groups together. When I'm not studying, I've been trying to de-stress by playing basketball, my favorite sport. Getting some exercise and fresh air really helps me re-energize. I also make sure to get enough sleep each night. The last thing I need is to show up tired on test day!The big test is now only a couple weeks away. I can feel the butterflies starting already. Mrs. Wang keeps telling us not to cram at the last minute and just relax and be confident in everything we've learned. I'm going to follow her advice and get my mind and body in peak condition. On test day, I'll get to school extra early, do some light reviewing, and then it'll be showtime! I can picture myself calmly working through each section, hand cupped over my ear for the listening, speaking clearly for the verbal tasks. When it's all over, I know I'll be relieved and proud that I gave it my absolute best effort.Getting into a great junior high would mean so much to me and my family. It would open up opportunities to attend a top high school and eventually a prestigious university. From there, the sky's the limit for my future career. Everything is riding on this test!I try not to think about it too much though. That way leads to overwhelming anxiety. Instead, I'm staying focused on the present - studying diligently, taking care of myself, and believing in my abilities. If I can walk into that test room confident and prepared, I'll have a great shot.Wish me luck! I'll update you all on how it went. But for now, it's time to hit the books again. There's no rest for a Shanghai sixth grader getting ready to take on the English Proficiency Test!篇2The 2024 Shanghai Middle School English Exam - A Student's TaleHey guys! I'm Ji-won, a 14-year-old middle school student here in Shanghai. I just took the annual English listening and speaking exam last week and man, was it an experience! Let me tell you all about it.First off, I was pretty nervous going into the exam. My English skills are decent but the test has always seemed kind of intimidating. It's divided into two main sections - listening comprehension and speaking. The listening part has students listen to recordings and answer multiple choice and short answer questions based on what they heard. The speaking portion hasstudents engage in roleplays, describe pictures, and give short speeches. Sounds simple enough, but believe me, it's way tougher than it seems!I tried my best to prepare by listening to English podcasts, watching YouTube videos in English, and practicing conversational scenarios with my English tutor. Even so, I was a bundle of nerves on test day. Hundreds of us filed into the exam hall, looking like zombies from stress and lack of sleep. The proctors gave us the rules - no cheating, bathrooms only at designated times, etc. With a final motivational "You've got this!" we began the listening portion. The first passage was about American high school culture - homecoming dances, pep rallies, that kind of stuff. I totally blanked on a few of the questions. Ugh, of course they'd pick an topic I knew nothing about! The second recording discussed job interview etiquette and body language. I feel like I did better on that one since my parents have prepped me for future interviews since I was like 5 years old! After a harrowing two hours of listening and furiously bubbling in answers, we finally got a break. I desperately chugged some water and tried to regain my bearings. Deep breaths, Ji-won, deep breaths. I pulled out the granola bar mymom had lovingly packed and scarfed it down for some brain fuel. Then it was time for the speaking portion. We were assigned rooms with individual examiners who would put us through our paces. I got called into my room feeling like I was heading to the executioner! The examiner was a kind-looking older woman with a warm smile. She did her best to make me feel at ease as we went through the various speaking tasks.First up was a basic candidate introduction where I had to describe myself, my hobbies, future goals, etc. Piece of cake, I've practiced this dozens of times! Then we moved into some roleplaying activities. One was asking for restaurant recommendations, another was negotiating the return policy at a store. The examiner was very patient as I fumbled through the scenarios. Then came the hard part - the open-ended sample response section. She described a couple situations in Chinese and I had to respond in English on how I would react or what my opinion was. One was about being asked to participate in a class debate tournament. Another asked for my thoughts on homework policies. I struggled to quickly organize my thoughts into coherent English sentences. My palms were sweating like crazy! After what felt like an eternity, she gave me a warm "xiexie" and I was finally done! I practically sprinted out of there, gulping down the fresh air of freedom. My brain felt like an overworked CPU about to burst into flames! Now it's just a waiting game until the scores come out. Part of me wants to know right away how I did, while another part never wants to think about that exam again! Whatever the result, I gave it my best shot.Looking back, it was definitely a valuable experience that will help me in the future. The exam pushed me to synthesize everything I've learned about English listening and speaking into real practical use. While exhausting, it felt like a key milestone in gauging my current skill level and motivating me to continue improving. At the end of the day, the exam made it crystal clear that English proficiency is so vital in our globalized world. It opens up opportunities for travel, career growth, cultural exchange, and so much more. It's one of the keys that can unlock amazing potential and adventures.Am I glad it's over? You bet! But I'm also grateful for the chance to test my mettle. To any fellow students reading this, my advice is - don't stress too much, but definitely take it seriouslyand prepare well. Get plenty of rest, fuel up with brain foods, and go in confident. You've got this! Most importantly, don't view the exam as a one-and-done event. See it as a checkpoint in your larger journey to English mastery. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Stick with it and keep working hard. The rewards will be more than worth it!Alright, that's my tale of the 2024 Shanghai English exam! I probably still have a few grey hairs from the experience, but I'm feeling good overall. Wish me luck on those scores! And to all my English learner friends out there - ganbatte (that's "good luck" in Japanese)! Let's conquer this language together.篇3The 2024 Shanghai Middle School English Test is Coming Up!Hey everyone! My name is Xiao Ming and I'm a 6th grader at Yangpu District Central Primary School. I'm super excited but also a little nervous because the big middle school English listening and speaking test is happening soon. All my classmates have been talking about it non-stop!My English teacher, Mrs. Wang, has been prepping us for months. She says this test is really important for getting into a good middle school. The scores from the test, along with our grades and some other exams, determine which schools we can apply to. The higher you score, the better your chances of getting into one of the top schools in Shanghai! The exam has two main parts - listening and speaking. For the listening portion, we have to watch videos or listen to audio recordings and answer multiple choice questions about what we heard. It tests our ability to understand English at a pretty high level. I've been practicing by watching English movies and shows and trying to summarize what happened. The speaking part is even more nerve-wracking in my opinion. We have to respond to prompts and have conversations with the test proctors. They evaluate our pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and fluency. I sometimes get tongue-tied when I'm put on the spot like that! Mrs. Wang has us do tons of practice conversations and presentations in class. One of the hardest things is keeping my tones accurate when speaking English. In Chinese, the tones completely change the meaning of a word. But English doesn't really have tones, so I have to be careful not to pronounce English words with myChinese tones. My parents have been making me read passages out loud at home to practice my English intonation.Another tricky part is understanding different accents. The test recordings have speakers from all over the English-speaking world - America, Britain, Australia, and more. Their accents sound pretty different from the English we learn in our textbooks. I've been listening to podcasts and watching shows from different countries to get used to the different pronunciations. While the exam is important, Mrs. Wang reminds us not to stress too much. She says the key is regular practice over time, not just cramming at the last minute. She's had us do lots of mock exams so we know what to expect on test day.My parents have been super supportive, helping me study and staying positive. They know how hard I've been working. Sometimes when I get overwhelmed thinking about the exam, my dad reminds me that it's just one test and doesn't define my whole future. As long as I try my best, he'll be proud of me no matter what my score is.My best friend Jia Li and I have a study group where we practice speaking, quiz each other, and keep each other motivated. We're both aiming for the same middle school, sowe're in this together! Having a friend to lean on has really helped me not feel as anxious. In just a couple weeks, it'll be test day. I'm going to get a good night's sleep, have a healthy breakfast, and try to stay calm. No matter what happens, I know I've put in the hard work to prepare. After the exam, Jia Li and I are planning to celebrate - either way, we made it through this milestone!Wish me luck, everyone! I'll do my best to represent Yangpu District Primary and make my teachers, parents, and friends proud. The road ahead may be challenging, but I'm ready to take it on. Just gotta keep studying, practicing my English skills, and believing in myself. Thanks for reading my story about this big test!篇4My Big English Test AdventureWow, I can't believe the big day is finally here - the 2024 Shanghai Middle School English Listening and Speaking Test!I've been getting ready for months and months. My teachers said this test is super important for getting into a great middle school. No pressure though, right? It all started way back at the beginning of the school year when my English teacher Miss Liu announced we'd be doing lots of practice for the big exam. At first, I wasn't too worried. English is one of my favorite subjects and I usually do pretty well. But then Miss Liu explained just how difficult the test would be. Uh oh!The listening part sounds really hard. We have to understand conversations, stories, announcements, and even some lectures - all in English! And the speaking section is no joke either. We have to respond to questions, give presentations, and role play different situations, again all in perfect English. My English is decent but having to understand and speak at such a high level for the whole test made me super nervous.Miss Liu kept drilling us on strategies though. For the listening, she said we need to listen for key details and context clues. She played recordings over and over until we could summarize the main ideas. For speaking, we practiced how to organize our thoughts and speak clearly and naturally. Lots of my classmates struggled, including me sometimes. But Miss Liu was patient and made us keep trying. At home, my parents had me doing extra English practice too. We'd turn on English TV shows, movies, YouTube videos -anything to get more listening exposure. My mom is pretty good at English so she'd quiz me on what was said. At first, I had such a hard time following! But eventually, my ears started adjusting to how English really sounds when native speakers talk. For the speaking practice, my parents made me do presentations for them on different topics like my daily routine, favorite books, future goals, and more. My dad is pretty strict so he'd keep correcting my pronunciation and grammar. It was annoying at the time, but I realize now he was just trying to make sure I'd do well on the exam. My little brother even got involved by acting out role play situations with me for extra practice! As the weeks went by, the listening and speaking exercises in class and at home really started paying off. The exam didn't seem quite so scary anymore. I was understanding more English audio and video materials, even things like news reports and podcasts. Speaking for long periods in English still took lots of effort, but I could have basic conversations without too much trouble. Miss Liu said my skills were improving a lot. Then, before I knew it, the day of the big test arrived! I was pretty nervous waiting outside the exam room, but I tried remembering all the tips and strategies Miss Liu taught us. Once I started the listening section, I took deep breaths and focused ashard as I could. There were definitely some parts that stumped me, but I felt like I understood a lot more than I would have without all that practice. The speaking part was tough too when it was my turn. A few times, I blanked on some vocabulary or grammar and struggled to get my point across clearly. But I didn't panic and just did my best to respond naturally like we'd practiced in class. The test administrators never made me feel rushed or stressed, which was nice. When it was all over, I felt both relieved and proud that I'd made it through such a challenging test! Now I'm just playing the waiting game for my results. I really hope I did well enough to get into one of the top middle schools. Preparing for this exam was without a doubt the hardest English experience I've ever had. Between all the class time, homework, and family practice sessions, English listening and speaking consumed my life for months! But I've got to hand it to my teachers and parents - their hard work and dedication really paid off. Thanks to all their efforts pushing me, my English abilities have gone through the roof compared to before I started prepping. No matter how I score on the actual test, I know all the blood, sweat, and tearsgetting ready have made me a much stronger English speaker and listener. That alone makes it all worth it.Who knows, maybe this exam kicked my English into high gear and I'll grow up to be an amazing translator, interpreter, or English teacher myself someday? Only time will tell I guess. But first, I've got middle school to look forward to...and probably more huge English exams to conquer! For now though, I'm just going to relax, recharge, and enjoy my final few weeks asa (elementary school student)!篇5The 2024 Shanghai Middle School Entrance Exam - An Insider LookHi everyone! My name is Xiaoming and I'm a 5th grader here in Shanghai. I just took the big English listening and speaking exam last week to try to get into a good middle school next year. I've been studying so hard for months, so I'm really glad it's over! My older sister took it two years ago, so she's been helping me get ready. I wanted to share my experience with you all.First off, the exam was super long - it lasted almost 3 hours! I had to wake up at 6am to get there on time. When I arrived, there were sooooo many students lined up outside the testingcenter. I felt a little nervous seeing the huge crowd, but my sister reminded me to stay calm and focused.Once we were allowed inside, we had to put all our belongings in lockers - no phones, books, notes or anything allowed during the test. An instructor went over the strict rules, like no cheating or talking at all during the exam. If you get caught, you're instantly disqualified! Yikes. The listening part was first. We had to wear headphones and listen to recordings of different conversations and passages. There were multiple choice questions testing if we understood the main ideas, details, speakers' intentions and tones. Some of the audio clips were pretty hard to follow since the speakers talked so fast. My ears were ringing by the end from concentrating so intensely! After a short break, it was time for the speaking section. This was the part I dreaded most. We had to go one-by-one into separate rooms with an examiner and a recorder. First, they asked me to introduce myself and talk about my hobbies and daily life. I tried to extend my answers as much as possible and use all the vocabulary words I had practiced. Then came the hardest task - an oral presentation on a randomly assigned topic. I had to speak for 2-3 minutes on thebenefits and drawbacks of learning coding from a young age. I spent a couple minutes quickly planning and organizing my thoughts before launching into my speech. Public speaking has always made me so anxious, but I did my best to sound clear, fluent and natural. The examiner also asked me several follow-up questions afterwards to see if I could think on my feet. Things like "Why is coding an important skill for the future?" and "What are some potential risks of too much screen time for kids?" I fumbled a bit at first, but managed to give decent responses drawing from the points I had prepared earlier. Finally, the examiner and I had a spontaneous conversation role-play situation. I had to pretend to convince my friend to sign up for the school coding club. It was pretty tricky trying to be creative and persuasive on the spot like that! When it was all over, I felt both relieved and exhausted. That was one of the most intense tests I've ever taken! Even though it was really challenging, I'm proud that I worked so hard to prepare. My spoken English has improved a ton thanks to all the extra classes and practice exams. Now it's just a matter of waiting for the results in a couple months. If I pass, it will mean I get into one of the top middleschools in the city and receive higher-level English instruction. My parents have made so many sacrifices to give me these opportunities, so I really hope my score is high enough! Fingers crossed.Well, that's a little peek into this wild experience. Let me know if you have any other questions! I'd be happy to share more about studying tips, useful resources or whatever. Wishing all my fellow test-takers the best of luck. We got this!篇6The 2024 English Listening and Speaking Exam? Ugh, I'm So Nervous!Hey there, it's me, Jessica. I'm an 11-year-old 6th grader at Shanghai World Academy, and boy, do I have something to share with you guys! You know how every year, all the students in Shanghai have to take the Junior High School Entrance Exam to get into a good middle school? Well, this year, they've added an English Listening and Speaking section to the test, and I'm feeling all kinds of jitters about it!See, English has always been my Achilles' heel. I mean, I can read and write it just fine, but when it comes to listening and speaking, I freeze up like a deer in the headlights! My Englishteacher, Ms. Roberts, is always telling me to "loosen up" and "don't be so hard on yourself," but it's just so difficult, you know? From what I've heard, the Listening part of the exam is going to have conversations, passages, and instructions that we need to listen to carefully and answer questions about. The Speaking part is even scarier – we might have to describe pictures, roleplay situations, or even have a full-on conversation with the examiner! Can you imagine how nerve-wracking that would be for a shy kid like me?But you know what? I'm determined to work my tail off and do my best on this exam. After all, getting into a good junior high school is crucial for my future. If I want to attend a top university later on and pursue my dream of becoming a video game designer, I need to start strong in middle school. That's why I've been practicing my English listening and speaking skills like crazy these past few months. Every night after school, I listen to English podcasts, watch YouTube videos in English, and even have fake conversations with myself in the mirror. My parents have also hired an English tutor, Ms. Yang, to help me out twice a week.Ms. Yang is awesome – she's so patient and always finds fun ways to make our lessons engaging. Last week, we did a roleplaywhere I pretended to be a tourist asking for directions in London, and she played the friendly local. It was a little awkward at first, but by the end, I was cracking jokes in English like a pro!I have to admit, some of my classmates seem to be taking it all in stride. There's this girl, Lily, who's basically fluent in English thanks to her parents being from the UK. She's always volunteering to answer questions and has such a natural flair for the language. I can't help but feel a twinge of jealousy whenever she nails a tricky pronunciation or idiom. But you know what? I'm not going to let that get me down. Sure, Lily might be a English whiz, but I have my own strengths too. I'm a total math genius, and I'm going to ace that part of the exam for sure. Plus, I've been working so hard on my English that I know all my efforts will pay off eventually. As the exam date of June 15th draws closer, the pressure is really ramping up. My parents keep peppering me with practice questions during dinner, and my English tutor has been assigning me more and more homework. But I'm trying my best to stay positive and keep my eye on the prize. The night before the exam, I'm sure I'll be a bundle of nerves, tossing and turning in bed, unable to sleep. But I'll just have to take a few deep breaths, remind myself of how far I've come, andwalk into that exam room with my head held high, ready to give it my all.Who knows, maybe the listening and speaking sections won't be as scary as I'm imagining them to be. Or maybe I'll totally bomb them and have to face the disappointment of not getting into my dream school. Either way, I know I'll have given it my best shot, and that's all that matters in the end.So to all my fellow test-takers out there, I wish you the best of luck! Let's show the examiners what we're made of and prove that we have what it takes to succeed in junior high and beyond. We've got this!Phew, that was a lot of words, but I feel so much better now that I've gotten all my thoughts and feelings out there. I'm going to go practice my English one more time before bed.
镜头二“Good morning, Beika!”“Good evening, Hangwai!”
镜头三主持这节连线课程的谢老师接过北卡学生的话题,问道:“What is a normal high school like in the US?”北卡的学生回答道:“Day school, less homework, lower expectation on achievement.”谢老师接着问杭外的学生:“Is HFLS a ‘normal’ school in China?”杭外的学生回答道:“Nope, we have less homework, higher expecta tion on achievement.”谢老师从学生的回答中,提炼了一个陈述:“We are both ‘abnormal’ schools in our own country, yet we are still different.”
