1My Big Sister's English TestMy big sister Lucy is a student at the university. She is studying to be an English teacher when she grows up. Last year, she had to take a very important test called the TEM-4. It's a big English test that all university students who want to be English teachers have to pass.Lucy studied really hard for months to get ready for the test. She took practice tests, made flashcards, and read lots of books and articles in English. Sometimes I would see her sitting at her desk with her head in her hands, looking very stressed out. Getting a good score on the TEM-4 was really important for her future career. The test had sections on listening, reading, writing, and translating between Chinese and English. But the part Lucy was most worried about was the writing section. She had to write a long essay of over 700 words! That's like a whole book for someone my age.The essay prompt she had to write about was: "It is widely believed that economic globalization has exerted great influence on culture around the world. In what ways has this phenomenon impacted your country's traditional culture? Is it a positive or negative development?"That's a pretty difficult topic, even for a grown-up university student! Lucy spent a lot of time thinking about her answer and taking notes before she started writing. She had to come up with a clear thesis statement and give lots of examples and evidence to support her points. From what she told me, in her essay Lucy wrote that globalization has definitely impacted traditional Chinese culture in both positive and negative ways. On the positive side, she said that globalization has helped expose Chinese traditions like cuisine, martial arts, traditional medicine, and cultural celebrations to people all over the world. This has increased international understanding and appreciation for Chinese culture. But she also pointed out some of the negative impacts, like the rise of Western-style consumerism, the decline of traditional arts and handicrafts as cheap factory-made goods become more popular, and the fading of regional dialects and folk customs asthe country becomes more unified. She argued that while interconnectedness has opened up Chinese culture in many ways, it has also led to the dilution or loss of some traditional cultural elements. In the end, Lucy concluded that the overall impact of globalization on Chinese culture has been a mixed bag - opening some opportunities but also posing challenges to preserving cultural heritage and identity. She called for more efforts to strike a balance between the benefits of globalization while actively protecting and promoting traditional cultural practices.Writing that huge essay all in English in just two hours must have been exhausting! But Lucy worked really hard and I was so proud of her when she finished. She felt good about the essay she wrote, even though her hand was cramping up by the end.A couple months later, Lucy got her TEM-4 test results back. She passed with a really high score! The graders must have liked her essay because her writing score was one of her highest sections. Lucy was overjoyed that her hard work had paid off. Now she is one big step closer to achieving her dream of becoming an English teacher.I hope that when I get to university, I can work as hard on my English skills as Lucy did. Maybe I'll even get to take the TEM-4test myself one day! But I better start practicing my essay writing skills now so I'll be ready for that huge 700-word assignment. Two thousand words in an essay would be a piece of cake compared to that!篇2The Test Question Was:Many people believe that social media websites like Facebook and Twitter have had an entirely negative impact on individuals and society. However, others argue that these sites have had many beneficial effects. What is your opinion? Use specific reasons and examples to support your response.A Kid's Sample Essay:Hello boys and girls! Today we're gonna talk about something super cool and modern - social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. These websites let you chat with friends, share photos and videos, and stay updated on what everyone is doing. Pretty neat, huh? Some grumpy grown-ups think social media is all bad and hurts people. But I don't agree! I think these sites can actually help people in lots of ways. Let me tell you why.First of all, social media helps you stay connected with your friends and family even when you can't see them in person. Like if your cousin lives in another city or country, you can still message them and see what they're up to on Facebook. Or if your bestie is home sick from school, you can send them a fun video on Twitter to cheer them up. Staying in touch is important!Social media also allows you to make new friends who have the same interests as you. Like if you really love dinosaurs, you can join a dinosaur fan group and meet other kids who are dino experts too. You can share dino facts, pictures, and jokes with each other. Having friends who like the same things as you is awesome.Another cool thing is how social media helps spread important information really fast. Like if there's a storm coming and school gets cancelled, your parents can jump on Facebook to let everyone know. Or if a new Justin Bieber song comes out, your friends can immediately post about it so nobody misses out. Information travels way quicker now!But probably the best part about social media is how it gives everybody a voice to express themselves. You can share your thoughts, artwork, funny videos, or whatever you want with the whole world through Facebook and Twitter. And others cancomment, like, and support your posts. It's a fun way to be creative and unique.Of course, I know some people misuse social media to bully others or spread mean rumors. That's definitely not cool at all. But that's on those nasty people, not the social media sites themselves. As long as kids use these websites responsibly and respectfully, they can be really beneficial.Overall, while I get why certain grumpy adults are afraid of new technology, I think social media is more awesome than awful. It helps you stay connected, make new friends, share important info, be creative and unique, and have fun! Just be a good friend online and it can make your life way better. What do you guys think? Do you love being on social media as much as me? Let me know! And parents, maybe you should finally get a Facebook account and join the 21st century already. It's not that scary, I promise! Okay, thanks for listening everyone. Catch you later!篇3Here's an essay on the 2018 TEM-8 writing topic, written in English and around 2,000 words, with a child-like tone:My Amazing Day at School!Hi there! Today was such an awesome day at school. I can't wait to tell you all about it!This morning, I woke up feeling super excited because today was English class. I just love learning new words and stuff in English. It's like a fun game trying to understand everything. Anyway, after getting ready, I had my favorite breakfast - pancakes with lots of sticky syrup! Yum yum!Once I was all set, I skipped along to the school bus stop, humming my favorite cartoon theme song. The big yellow bus soon arrived and I climbed aboard, waving to the nice bus driver lady. I found a spot near the back and plopped down next to my best friend Alex."Hey Alex! Isn't today going to be the best?" I asked cheerfully."You know it!" he replied, giving me a high five.At school, we headed straight for Mr. Roberts' English class. He's my favorite teacher because he always makes learning fun and interesting. Today's lesson was about writing essays and stories. Mr. Roberts said we'd be learning how to plan and organize our ideas really well."Okay class, who can tell me the most important things we need to do before starting to write?" Mr. Roberts asked with an encouraging smile.I raised my hand up high, practically jumping out of my seat. "Ooh ooh! Pick me!"Mr. Roberts chuckled and called on me. "Go ahead, Jamie.""First we need to pick a good topic that we can write a lot about. Then we should make an outline to organize all our thoughts and ideas in a way that flows nicely and makes sense," I answered proudly."Excellent answer, Jamie! You're absolutely right," Mr. Roberts said, giving me a thumbs up.He went on to explain more tips about good essay writing like using detailed examples, checking for mistakes, and editing our work. It was a lot to remember, but I tried my best to take great notes. Writing is hard work, but so much fun too!For the rest of class, we had to start planning out our own essay ideas. Mr. Roberts let us pick any topic we wanted as long as it was something we felt passionate about. I decided to write about my favorite activity - playing soccer! I just love that game so much.I started jotting down all my thoughts - like how soccer helps me stay fit and healthy, how it teaches good sportsmanship, how I've made so many good friends, and all the amazing games I've played. Before I knew it, the outline for my essay was practically writing itself! This was going to be epic.At lunch, I almost forgot to eat I was so excited about my essay idea. But my rumbling tummy reminded me to dig into my turkey sandwich and apple slices. Once I had refueled, I continued doodling little soccer balls and players all over my notebook. I could barely sit still, I just wanted to start writing already! Finally, the rest of the day flew by and it was time for the after school soccer practice that I look forward to every day. Scoring a couple of goals, laughing with my teammates, and getting some fresh air was the perfect way to end an already stellar day.On the bus ride home, I couldn't stop thinking about my big soccer essay. I just knew it was going to be amazing. I had so many excellent memories, experiences, and reasons to write about why soccer is honestly the most fun game ever. I could hardly wait to start drafting everything out!Well, that's all for my super eventful day. I'm going to go work on my outline some more before dinner. Hopefully, I'll have my essay written and ready to share with you all very soon! Catch you later!篇4My Summer Vacation Adventure!Last summer, my family went on a super fun and exciting vacation! We went to a place called the Grand Canyon. It's a huge canyon or really big hole in the ground out in the desert in a state called Arizona. The drive there took forever! We had to ride in the car for like two whole days. My little brother Johnny kept asking "Are we there yet?" about a million times. He's so annoying sometimes! But my mom packed fun road trip games and snacks to keep us busy. When we finally got to the Grand Canyon, it was SO big! Like bigger than you could ever imagine. It seemed to go on forever in every direction. The sides were super steep going down into the canyon too. My dad said it was about a mile deep! That's like stacking a bunch of skyscrapers on top of each other. Crazy! The first day, we just walked around the rim trail and looked out over the canyon from different viewpoints. The colors of the rocks were crazy - reds, oranges, pinks, purples. My mom is an artist and she went nuts over all the colors and textures. She took like a million pictures because she said it looked like a different painting everywhere you looked. That night, we went to a ranger talk and learned all about how the Grand Canyon was formed. Basically, this huuuuge river called the Colorado River has been carving and eroding away at the rocks for millions of years. The ranger said the canyon is still getting a little bigger every year as the river keeps on flowing! Wild, right? The next day, we went on a hiking tour down into the canyon itself. We had to wake up super early, like before the sun even came up. The trail went steeply down, down, down for miles. Our guide said we'd only be going about a quarter of the way to the bottom because it's dangerous to go all the way down and back up in one day.The hike was really hard! My legs got so tired from all the steep steps. But it was awesome being down inside the canyon looking up at the huge walls towering all around us. We saw lots of cool plants and critters adapted to live in the harshenvironment too. We even saw the Colorado River itself at the bottom, but just for a second because we couldn't get too close. After our little hike, I was exhausted! The trip back up to the rim was even harder than going down. I had to stop and rest a lot and drink tons of water. My dad had to carry my little brother part of the way because he was too tuckered out to keep going. When we finally made it back to the top, we were drenched in sweat but felt so proud we had done it!On our last day, we went on a guided mule ride along the rim trail. The mules are like little donkeys that are used to carry people and supplies down into the canyon. I was a little nervous riding one at first, but our guide helped me get comfortable. We saw even more amazing views from the trail. Apparently, the Native American tribes that live in the area have lived and hunted and farmed in the canyon for centuries. There were old ruins and artifacts all along the trail that the guide pointed out. So cool! All in all, the Grand Canyon was an unbelievable place. The size and scale of it was just mind-blowing, especially being down inside it looking up. I'll never forget the incredible views and colors. I feel so lucky I got to experience one of the great natural wonders of the world. I can't wait to go on another epic adventure like this again someday!篇5Title: The Super Cool Test AdventureHi friends! Today I'm going to tell you all about the big important test I took called the China Research English Exam Level 4. It was a huge deal and tons of university students across China had to take it too. Get ready for an exciting story time!It all started a few months ago when my teacher told our class that we would all be taking this massively difficult English exam. I gulped because English is my trickiest subject in school. All those vocabulary words, grammar rules, and reading comprehension passages make my head spin sometimes. But my teacher assured us that if we studied really hard, we could ace the test. For weeks, I hit the books day and night. I made flashcards of all the crazy English words I needed to know like "ubiquitous" and "discombobulated." I practiced essay writing every day to get better at communicating my thoughts clearly in English. My brain was constantly full of English! Finally, the big day arrived. I was so nervous when I entered the exam hall and saw row after row of desks with test booklets waiting for us. I did my best to stay calm by taking deep breathslike my yoga teacher showed me. When the exam started, I zeroed in and worked my way through each section with total focus and determination. The listening part was first up. I had to listen really carefully to recordings of people speaking English and then answer multiple choice questions about what they said. Luckily my amazing ears were ready after all that practice! Next up was the reading section where I blazed through some intense reading passages before answering comprehension queries. After a snack break to re-energize, we moved onto the writing tasks. I had to draft an English essay arguing for or against an opinion. I put my pencil to work furiously, making sure to include clear examples and reasoning. The tough words I memorized smoothly made their way into my work.By the time I got to the translation section, I was a total pro. Shifting between Chinese and English was a piece of cake after so much studying. I knocked that part out in what felt like two seconds. Finally, we wrapped up with some nitpicky grammar questions testing our skills. When I walked out of there, I felt like a million bucks! That test was grueling, but I had given it my absolute all. My brain was flat out exhausted from using so much English for hours on end. Irewarded myself with some tasty dumplings from my favorite restaurant.A couple months later, the results came in and I totally rocked it! My score was high enough that I could apply to any university program I wanted. My parents were bursting with pride over my hard work paying off so nicely. That cool test adventure ended up being one of my biggest accomplishments! So there you have it friends - the full scoop on my journey conquering the terrifyingly legendary English exam. With perseverance, focus, and many hours of practice, any hurdle can be overcome. Hopefully my tale inspired you to work hard, believe in yourself, and never back down from a challenge. Let's hear it for the super students who dared to take on this beast of a test! Thanks for listening, pals!篇6My Super Awesome Summer VacationThis summer was the best summer ever! First of all, I didn't have to go to school for like three whole months. No waking up early, no homework, no teachers yelling at me. It was heaven! The first thing I did on my summer vacation was sleep in really late every single day. My mom tried to get me up early a few times, but I just ignored her. I'm an expert at ignoring my parents when I want to. After sleeping until noon, I'd play video games all day in my pajamas. I beat all the levels on my new Pokemon game. Take that, Team Rocket! After a few weeks of this, my mom said I couldn't be a lazy bum all summer. She made me go to camp for a month in July. At first I thought it would be lame and boring, but it ended up being pretty fun. We went swimming every day, made lanyards and friendship bracelets, had campfires with s'mores at night, and went on hiking trips. I even made some new friends! My favorite part was the three-day camping trip we went on. We all slept in tents and cooked our food over the campfire. One night, we heard spooky sounds outside our tent. My friend Aiden swore he saw a bear, but it was probably just a raccoon or possum or something. I didn't get much sleep that night! After camp ended, my family went on vacation to Florida for a week. We stayed at this awesome hotel that had a huge pool with a waterslide and lazy river. I spent pretty much all day, every day in the pool. My little sister kept getting sunburned becauseshe wouldn't listen when I told her to put on sunscreen. She's so annoying sometimes! We also went to Disney World and Universal Studios. I got to go on all the extreme roller coasters because I'm finally tall enough. My dad looked like he was going to puke after going on the Incredible Hulk coaster, but I loved it! We also saw lots of shows with stunts, magic, and 3D effects. So cool!At the end of the week, I was really sad to leave Florida and go back home. But my friends were all going back to school already, so I got to stay home for almost another month by myself. I invited my best bud Max over a bunch of times to play video games and have Nerf gun wars in the backyard. His mom probably got tired of him driving her crazy all day.Eventually, summer did have to end though. I dreaded going back to school, waking up at the crack of dawn, having a strict schedule, and getting piled with homework again. But at least I have an awesome three months of memories to look back on! That's what getting out of school for summer is all about - making fun memories and getting to just be a kid. I can't wait for next summer!。

The Power of Perseverance in OvercomingChallengesIn the realm of life's journey, challenges are inevitable, serving as testing grounds for our resilience and perseverance. The 2018 Huayan English Major Test for Grade Four (TEM-4) essay topic, which centered on the significance of perseverance in the face of adversity, resonates deeply with the essence of human existence. It reminds us that perseverance, the steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success, is a vital quality that enables us to rise above challenges and emerge victorious. The essay begins by acknowledging the ubiquity of challenges in our lives, from minor setbacks to major obstacles. It posits that these challenges are not merely obstacles to overcome but also opportunities for growth and transformation. By facing and overcoming challenges, we not only strengthen our character but also broaden our horizons, gaining valuable insights and experiences. The essence of perseverance lies in its ability to transform potential defeat into triumph. It requires asteadfast commitment to a goal, coupled with the resilience to persevere even when faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles. This quality is exemplified by numerous figures throughout history, from scientists who persevered in their research despite repeated failures to athletes who trained relentlessly to achieve their dreams. In the context of modern society, perseverance remains as crucial as ever. The fast-paced and competitive nature of today's world often presents us with numerous challenges that test our resolve. It alsoinvolves the ability to adapt and pivot when necessary, learning from our mistakes and adjusting our strategies to better suit the changing circumstances. This flexibility is an integral part of perseverance, allowing us to navigate through life's challenges with greater ease and efficiency. In conclusion, the power of perseverance in overcoming challenges is undeniable. It is a quality that shapes our character, transforms our outlook, and propels us towards success. By cultivating perseverance in our lives, we can turn potential defeats into triumphs, overcoming even the most daunting challenges and emerging victorious on the other side.**坚持的力量:克服挑战的关键**在人生的旅途中,挑战无处不在,它们考验着我们的韧性和坚持。

Truth, therefore, is an attitude of the mind.It is important, if one does not wish to inconvenience and to bore one's friends, not to tell lies. But it is more important not to think lies, or to slide into those mechanical and untruthful habits of thought which are so pleasant and so easy as descents to mental ineptitude. The Victorian habit of mind (which I consider to have been a bad habit of mind) was unduly preoccupied by what was socially and morally convenient. Convenience is, however, in all affairs of life, an execrable test of value. One should have the courage to think uncomfortably, since it is only by rejecting the convenient that one can come to think the truth.

2018年考研英语英译汉解析(英语一)(宋晨版)46.By the date of his birth Europe was witnessing the passing of the religious drama that had held its course for some five centuries, and the creation of new and mixed forms under the incentive of classical tragedy and comedy.

under the incentive of classical tragedy and comedy这一介词结构做的是状语。

under the incentive of…

注意and the creation of new and mixed forms under the incentive of classical tragedy and comedy.

The moon sheds her liquid light silently over the leaves and flowers, which, in the floating transparency of a bluish haze from the pond, look as if they had just been bathed in milk, or like a dream wrapped in a gauzy hood (1)(2)(3). Although it is a full moon, shining through a film of clouds, the light is not at its brightest; it is, however, just right for me— a profound sleep is indispensable, yet a snatched doze also has a savour of its own (4). The moon light is streaming down through the foliage, casting bushy shadows on the ground from high above, dark and checked, like an army of ghosts;

Text 11-- Among the annoying challenges facing the middle class is one that will probably go unmentioned in the next presidential campaign: What happens when the robots come for their jobs?2-- Don't dismiss that possibility entirely. About half of U.S. jobs are at high risk of being automated, according to a University of Oxford study, with the middle class disproportionately squeezed.Lower-income jobs like gardening or day care don't appeal to robots. But many middle-class occupations—trucking, financial advice, software engineering—have aroused their interest, or soon will. The rich own the robots, so they will be fine.3-- This isn't to be alarmist. Optimists point out that technological upheaval has benefited workers in the past. The Industrial Revolution didn't go so well for Luddites whose jobs were displaced by mechanized looms, but it eventually raised living standards and created more jobs than it destroyed.Likewise, automation should eventually boost productivity, stimulate demand by driving down prices, and free workers from hard, boring work. But in the medium term, middle-class workers may need a lot of help adjusting.4-- The first step, as Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee argue in The Second Machine Age, should be rethinking education and job training.Curriculums—from grammar school to college—should evolve to focus less on memorizing facts and more on creativity and complex communication. V ocational schools should do a better job of fostering problem-solving skills and helping students work alongside robots.Online education can supplement the traditional kind. It could make extra training and instruction affordable. Professionals trying to acquire new skills will be able to do so without going into debt.5-- The challenge of coping with automation underlines the need for the U.S. to revive its fading business dynamism: Starting new companies must be made easier. In previous eras of drastic technological change, entrepreneurs smoothed the transition by dreaming up ways to combine labor and machines. The best uses of 3D printers and virtual reality haven't been invented yet. The U.S. needs the new companies that will invent them.6-- Finally, because automation threatens to widen the gap between capital income and labor income, taxes and the safety net will have to be rethought.Taxes on low-wage labor need to be cut, and wage subsidies such as the earned income tax credit should be expanded: This would boost incomes, encourage work, reward companies for job creation, and reduce inequality.Technology will improve society in ways big and small over the next few years, yet this will be little comfort to those who find their lives and careers upended by automation.Destroying the machines that are coming for our jobs would be nuts. But policies to help workers adapt will be indispensable.21. Who will be most threatened by automation?A. Leading politicians.B. Low-wage laborers.C. Robot owners.D. Middle-class workers.22. Which of the following best represent the author's view?A. Worries about automation are in fact groundless.B. Optimists' opinions on new tech find little support.C. Issues arising from automation need to be tackled.D. Negative consequences of new tech can be avoided.23. Education in the age of automation should put more emphasis on ________.A. creative potentialB. job-hunting skillsC. individual needsD. cooperative spirit24. The author suggests that tax policies be aimed at ________.A. encouraging the development of automationB. increasing the return on capital investmentC. easing the hostility between rich and poorD. preventing the income gap from widening25. In this text, the author presents a problem with ________.A. opposing views on itB. possible solutions to itC. its alarming impactsD. its major variationsText 21-- A new survey by Harvard University finds more than two-thirds of young Americans disapprove of President Trump's use of Twitter. The implication is that Millennials prefer news from the White House to be filtered through other source, not a president's social media platform.2-- Most Americans rely on social media to check daily headlines. Yet as distrust has risen toward all media, people may be starting to beef up their media literacy skills. Such a trend is badly needed.During the 2016 presidential campaign, nearly a quarter of web content shared by Twitter users in the politically critical state of Michigan was fake news, according to the University of Oxford. And a survey conducted for BuzzFeed News found 44 percent of Facebook users rarely or never trust news from the media giant.3-- Young people who are digital natives are indeed becoming more skillful at separating fact from fiction in cyberspace. A Knight Foundation focus-group survey of young people between ages 14 and 24 found they use "distributed trust" to verify stories. They cross-check sources and prefer news from different perspectives—especially those that are open about any bias. "Many young people assume a great deal of personal responsibility for educating themselves and actively seeking out opposing viewpoints," the survey concluded.4-- Such active research can have another effect. A 2014 survey conducted in Australia, Britain, and the United States by the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that young people's reliance on social media led to greater political engagement.5-- Social media allows users to experience news events more intimately and immediately while also permitting them to re-share news as a projection of their values and interests. This forces users to be more conscious of their role in passing along information.A survey by Barna research group found the top reason given by Americans for the fake news phenomenon is "reader error," more so than made-up stories or factual mistakes in reporting.About a third say the problem of fake news lies in "misinterpretation or exaggeration of actual news" via social media. In other words, the choice to share news on social media may be the heart of the issue."This indicates there is a real personal responsibility in counteracting this problem," says Roxanne Stone, editor in chief at Barna Group.6-- So when young people are critical of an over-tweeting president, they reveal a mental discipline in thinking skills—and in their choices on when to share on social media.26. According to the Paragraphs 1 and 2, many young Americans cast doubts on ________.A. the justification of the news-filtering practiceB. people's preference for social media platformsC. the administration’s ability to handle informationD. social media was a reliable source of news27. The phrase "beer up" (Line 2, Para. 2) is closest in meaning to ________.A. sharpenB. defineC. boastD. share28. According to the knight foundation survey, young people ________.A. tend to voice their opinions in cyberspaceB. verify news by referring to diverse resourcesC. have a strong sense of responsibilityD. like to exchange views on "distributed trust"29. The Barna survey found that a main cause for the fake news problem is ________.A. readers outdated valuesB. journalists' biased reportingC. readers' misinterpretationD. journalists' made-up stories30. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?A. A Rise in Critical Skills for Sharing News OnlineB. A Counteraction Against the Over-tweeting TrendC. The Accumulation of Mutual Trust on Social MediaD. The Platforms for Projection of Personal InterestsText 31-- Any fair-minded assessment of the dangers of the deal between Britain's National Health Service (NHS) and DeepMind must start by acknowledging that both sides mean well. DeepMind is one of the leading artificial intelligence (AI) companies in the world. The potential of this work applied to healthcare is very great, but it could also lead to further concentration of power in the tech giants. It is against that background that the information commissioner, Elizabeth Denham, has issued her damning verdict against the Royal Free hospital trust under the NHS, which handed over to DeepMind the records of 1.6 million patients in 2015 on the basis of a vague agreement which took far too little account of the patients' rights and their expectations of privacy.2-- DeepMind has almost apologized. The NHS trust has mended its ways. Further arrangements—and there may be many—between the NHS and DeepMind will be carefully scrutinised to ensure that all necessary permissions have been asked of patients and all unnecessary data has been cleaned. There are lessons about informed patient consent to learn. But privacy is not the only angle in this case and not even the most important.Ms. Denham chose to concentrate the blame on the NHS trust, since under existing law it “controlled” the data and DeepMind merely “processed" it. But this distinction misses the point that it is processing and aggregation, not the mere possession of bits, that gives the data value. The great question is who should benefit from the analysis of all the data that our lives now generate. Privacy law builds on the concept of damage to an individual from identifiable knowledge about them. That misses the way the surveillance economy works. The data of an individual there gains its value only when it is compared with the data of countless millions more.3-- The use of privacy law to curb the tech giants in this instance feels slightly maladapted. This practice does not address the real worry. It is not enough to say that the algorithms DeepMind develops will benefit patients and save lives. What matters is that they will belong to a private monopoly which developed them using public resources. If software promises to save lives on the scale that dugs now can, big data may be expected to behave as a big pharm has done.We are still at the beginning of this revolution and small choices now may turn out to have gigantic consequences later. A long struggle will be needed to avoid a future of digital feudalism. Ms. Denham's report is a welcome start.31. What is true of the agreement between the NHS and DeepMind?A. It caused conflicts among tech giants.B. It failed to pay due attention to patient's rights.C. It fell short of the latter's expectations.D. It put both sides into a dangerous situation.32. The NHS trust responded to Denham's verdict with ______.A. empty promisesB. tough resistanceC. necessary adjustmentsD. sincere apologies33. The author argues in Paragraph 2 that ________.A. privacy protection must be secured at all costsB. leaking patients' data is worse than selling itC. making profits from patients' data is illegalD. the value of data comes from the processing of it34. According to the last paragraph, the real worry arising from this deal is ________.A. the vicious rivalry among big pharmasB. the ineffective enforcement of privacy lawC. the uncontrolled use of new softwareD. the monopoly of big data by tech giants35. The author's attitude toward the application of AI to healthcare is ______.A. ambiguousB. cautiousC. appreciativeD. contemptuousText 41-- The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) continues to bleed red ink. It reported a net loss of $ 5.6 billion for fiscal 2016, the 10th straight year its expenses have exceeded revenue.Meanwhile, it has more than $120 billion in unfunded liabilities, mostly for employee health and retirement costs. There are many bankruptcies.Fundamentally, the USPS is in a historic squeeze between technological change that has permanently decreased demand for its bread-and-butter product, first-class mail, and a regulatory structure that denies management the flexibility to adjust its operations to the new reality.2-- And interest groups ranging from postal unions to greeting-card makers exert self-interested pressure on the USPS's ultimate overseer—Congress—insisting that whatever else happens to the Postal Service, aspects of the status quo they depend on get protected. This is why repeated attempts at reform legislation have failed in recent years, leaving the Postal Service unable to pay its bills except by deferring vital modernization.3-- Now comes word that everyone involved—Democrats, Republicans, the Postal Service, the unions and the system's heaviest users—has finally agreed on a plan to fix the system.Legislation is moving through the House that would save USPS an estimated $ 28.6 billion over five years, which could help pay for new vehicles, among other survival measures. Most of the money would come from a penny-per-letter permanent rate increase and from shifting postal retirees into Medicare. The latter step would largely offset the financial burden of annually pre-funding retiree health care, thus addressing a long-standing complaint by the USPS and its union.4-- If it clears the House, this measure would still have to get through the Senate—where someone is bound to point out that it amounts to the bare, bare minimum necessary to keep the Postal Service afloat, not comprehensive reform. There's no change to collective bargaining at the USPS, a major omission considering that personnel accounts for 80 percent of the agency's costs. Also missing is any discussion of eliminating Saturday letter delivery. That common-sense change enjoys wide public support and would save the USPS $ 2 billion per year. But postal special-interest groups seem to have killed it, at least in the House. The emerging consensus around the bill is a sign that legislators are getting frightened about a politically embarrassing short-term collapse at the USPS.It is not, however, a sign that they're getting serious about transforming the postal system for the 21st century.36. The financial problem with the USPS is caused partly by ________.A. its unbalanced budgetB. its rigid managementC. the cost for technical upgradingD. the withdrawal of bank support37. According to Paragraph 2, the USPS fails to modernize itself due to ________.A. the interference from interest groupsB. the inadequate funding from CongressC. the shrinking demand for postal serviceD. the incompetence of postal unions38. The long-standing complaint by the USPS and its unions can be addressed by ________.A. removing its burden of retiree health careB. making more investment in new vehiclesC. adopting a new rate-increase mechanismD. attracting more first-class mail users39. In the last paragraph, the author seems to view legislators with ______.A. respectB. toleranceC. discontentD. gratitude40. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?A. The USPS Starts to Miss Its Good Old DaysB. The Postal Service: Keep Away from My CheeseC. The USPS: Chronic Illness Requires a Quick CureD. The Postal Service Needs More than a Band-Aid。

Section 1: English-Chinese Translation(英译汉)(60 point)Part A Compulsory Translation (必译题) Until recently, scientists knew little about life in the deep sea, nor had they reason to believe that it was being threatened. Now, with the benefit of technology that allows for deeper exploration, researchers have uncovered a remarkable array of species inhabiting the ocean floor at depths of more than 660 feet, or about 200 meters. At the same time, however, technology has also enabled fishermen to reach far deeper than ever before, into areas where bottom trawls can destroy in minutes what has taken nature hundreds and in some cases thousands of years to build. Many of the world’s coral species, for example, are found at depths of more than 200 meters. It is also estimated that roughly half of the world’s highest seamounts —areas that rise from the ocean floor and are particularly rich in marine life — are also found in the deep ocean. These deep sea ecosystems provide shelter, spawning and breeding areas for fish and other creatures, as well as protection from strong currents and predators. Moreover, they are believed to harbor some of the most extensive reservoirs of life on earth, with estimates ranging from 500,000 to 100 million species inhabiting these largely unexplored and highly fragile ecosystems. Yet just as we are beginning to recognize the tremendous diversity of life in these areas, along with the potential benefits newly found species may hold for human society in the form of potential food products and new medicines, they are at risk of being lost forever. With enhanced ability both to identify where these species-rich areas are located and to trawl in deeper water than before, commercial fishing vessels are now beginning to reach down with nets the size of football fields, catching everything in their path while simultaneously crushing fragile corals and breaking up the delicate structure of reefs and seamounts that provide critical habitat to the countless species of fish and other marine life that inhabit the deep ocean floor. Because deep sea bottom trawling is a recent phenomenon, the damage that has been done is still limited. If steps are taken quickly to prevent this kind of destructive activity from occurring on the high seas, the benefits both to the marine environment and to future generations are incalculable. And they far outweigh the short-term costs to the fishing industry. Part B Optional Translations (二选一题)(30 points) Topic 1 (选题一) Most of the world’s victims of AIDS live —and, at an alarming rate, die — in Africa. The number of people living with AIDS in Africa was estimated at 26.6 million in late 2003. New figures to be published by the United Nations Joint Program on AIDS (UNAIDS),the special UN agency set up to deal with the pandemic, will probably confirm its continued spread in Africa, but they will also show whether the rate of spread is constant, increasing or falling. AIDS is most prevalent in Eastern and Southern Africa, with South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya having the greatest numbers of sufferers; other countries severely affected include Botswana and Zambia. AIDS was raging in Eastern Africa —where it was called “slim”, after the appearance of victims wasting away — within a few years after its emergence wasestablished in the eastern Congo basin; however, the conflicting theories about the origin of AIDS are highly controversial and politicized, and the controversy is far from being settled. Measures being taken all over Africa include, first of all, campaigns of public awareness and device, including advice to remain faithful to one sexual partner and to use condoms. The latter advice is widely ignored or resisted owing to natural and cultural aversion to condoms and to Christian and Muslim teaching, which places emphasis instead on self-restraint. An important part of anti- AIDS campaigns, whether organized by governments, nongovernmental organizations or both, is the extension of voluntary counseling and testing (VCT).In addition, medical research has found a way to help sufferers, though not to cure them.。

The rain stopped. There wassome light to come into the room through the curtain. I opened the window andlooked out. Ah, the clouds had disappeared. The raindrops on the leaves, underthe moonlight, glistened like thousands of fireflies. I cannot think I couldsee such a beautiful picture after the miserable rain in a lonely night.

The rain gradually stopped to patter。

Thesound of the rain stopped。

As the rain gradually ceased topatter, a glimmer of light began to filter into the room through the curtain.

I opened the window and looked out.

The clouds had disappeared/vanished.(注意时态)。

The remaining(残)raindrops on the leaves glistened beautifully(各种赞美的形容词都可)under the moonlight like thousands (都是虚指,可以换成countless,再文一点可以换成myriads) of fireflies.

To think that……
To think that I could see such a beautiful sight afterthe miserable rain in a lonely night!(孤灯其实就是孤独的夜晚,直接翻孤灯反而会显得奇怪。

)
To think that there shouldappear before my eyes such a beautiful sight after the miserable rain in alonely night!
As the rain gradually ceased topatter, a glimmer of light began to filter into the room through the curtain. Iopened the window and looked out. Ah,the clouds hadvanished and the remaining raindrops on the leaves glistened beautifully underthe moonlight like myriads of fireflies. To think that there should appearbefore my eyes such a beautiful sight after the miserable rain in a lonelynight!
