Passage6Two works published in 1984 demonstrate contrasting approaches to writing the history of United States women. //(第一层:文章主旨句,点明中心思想,表明本文将比较二部作品的写作手法)Buel and Buel’s(出现人物名,注意)biography of Mary Fish (1736-1818) makes little effort (负评价词)to place her story in the context of recent historiography on women. Lebsock,(出现人物名,注意)meanwhile(结构词,后引出与Buel and Buel’s写法的不同), attempts not only to write the history of women in one southern community, but also to redirect two decades of historiographical debate as to whether women gained or lost status on the nineteenth century as compared with the eighteenth century(注意,与18世纪对比)//(第二层:对比Buel&Lebsock 写作方式的不同,注意作者态度倾向于Lebsock)Although(结构词,表让步)both(二本书的共同之处)books offer the reader the opportunity to assess this c ontroversy regarding women’s status, only(表转折)Lebsock’s deals with it directly(正评价词). She examines several different aspects of women’s status, helping to refine and resolve the issues. She concludes(表观点的动词,后一般引出人物观点)that while women gained autonomy in some areas, especially in the private sphere, they lost it in many aspectsof the economic sphere. More importantly(表递进), she shows that the debate itself depends on frame of reference: in many respects, women lost power in relation to men, for example(第一遍读文时可略读), as certain jobs (delivering babies, supervising schools) were taken over by men. Yet(结构词,表转折)women also gained power in comparison with their previous status, owning a higher proportion of real estate, for example.(举例第一遍读文时可略读)In contrast (结构短语,表对比), Buel and Buel’s biography provides ample raw material for questioning the myth, fostered by some historians (插入语,可略读), of a colonial golden age in the eighteenth century but does not give the reader much guidance in analyzing the controversy over women’s status.//(第三层:二位作者都涉及女性地位的争议,但具体描述Lebsock如何直接探讨这一争议;并简述Buel 写作手法的瑕疵)逻辑简图:观点对比型第一层:文章主旨句,点明中心思想,表明本文将比较二部作品的写作手法第二层:对比Buel&Lebsock 写作方式的不同,注意作者态度倾向于Lebsock第三层:二位作者都涉及女性地位的争议,但具体描述Lebsock如何直接探讨这一争议;并简述Buel 写作手法的瑕疵1.The primary purpose of the passage is to(主旨题)A.examine two sides of a historiographical debate(不是检测历史辩论的二个方面,排除)B.call into question an author’s approach to a historiographical debate(不是质疑历史辩论的方式,排除)C.examine one author’s approach to a historiographical debate(不是检测历史辩论的方法,排除)D.discuss two authors’ works in relationship to a historiographical debate(正确)E.explain the prevalent perspective on a historiographical debate(解释史学研究辩论的普遍观点,无关解释,排除)2.The author of the passage mentions the supervision of schools primarily in order to(细节题)回文定位至第三层for example 前面的句子A.remind readers of the role education played in the cultural changes of the nineteenth century in the United States(无关education,排除)B.suggest an area in which nineteenth-century American women were relatively free to exercise power(无关area,排除)C.provide an example of an occupation for which accurate data about women’s participation are difficult to obtain(不是职业举例,排除)D.speculate about which occupations were considered suitable for United States women of the nineteenth century(无关推测,排除)E.illustrate how the answers to questions about women’s status depend on particular contexts(正确,she shows that the debate itself depends on frame of reference的同义改写)3.With which of the following characterizations of Lebsock’s contribution to the controversy concerning women’s status in the nineteenth-century United States would the author of the passage be most likely to agree?(推理题)A.Lebsock has studied women from a formerly neglected region and time period.(与原文不符,排除)B.Lebsock has demonstrated the importance of frame of reference in answering questions about women’s status.(正确)C.Lebsock has addressed the controversy by using women’s current status as a frame of reference.(与原文不符,排除)D.Lebsock has analyzed statistics about occupations and property that were previously ignored.(与原文不符,排除)E.Lebsock has applied recent historiographical methods to the biography of a nineteenth century woman.(与原文不符,排除)4.According to the passage, Lebsock’s work differs from Buel and Buel’s work in that Lebsock’s work(细节题)回文定位至第二层,注意是找Lebsock写法的特点es a large number of primary sources(这是Buel的写作特点,排除)B.ignores issues of women’s legal status(错误表述,排除)C.refuses to take a position on women’s status in the eighteenth century(与原文内容相反,排除)D.addresses larger historiographical issues(正确)E.fails to provide sufficient material to support its claims(文章未涉及,排除)5.The passage suggests that Lebsock believes that compared tonineteenth-century American women, eighteenth-century American women were(对比题)回文定位至第三层,gained autonomy in the private sphere, they lost it in many aspects of the economic sphere. A.in many respects less powerful in relation to men(无关和men对比,排除)B.more likely to own real estate(无关real estate,排除)C.generally more economically independent(正确,19世纪女性更有个人自由但却不经济独立,相反18世纪女性更economically independent)D.more independent in conducting their private lives(这是19世纪女性特点,排除)E.less likely to work as school superintendents(无关school superintendents,排除)6.The passage suggests that Buel and Buel’s biography of Mary Fish provides evidence for which of the following views of women’s history?(细节题)回文定位至for questioning the殖民黄金时代,最后一段句尾A.Women have lost power in relation to men since the colonial era.(错误表述,排除)B.Women of the colonial era were not as likely to be concerned with their status as were women in the nineteenth century.(无关比较,排除)C.The colonial era was not as favorable for women as some historians have believed.(正确)D.Women had more economic autonomy in the colonial era than in the nineteenth century.(无关比较,排除)E.Women’s occupations were generally more respected in the colonial era than in the nineteenth century.(无关比较,排除)。

Researchers compared the number of tooth fractures in present-day carnivores with tooth fractures in carnivores that lived 36,000 to 10,000 years ago and that were preserved in the Rancho La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles. The breakage frequencies in the extinct species were strikingly higher than those in the present-day species. In considering possible explanations for this finding, the researchers dismissed demographic bias because older individuals were not overrepresented in the fossil samples. They rejected preservational bias because a total absence of breakage in two extinct species demonstrated that the fractures were not the result of abrasion within the pits. They ruled out local bias because breakage data obtained from other Pleistocene sites were similar to the La Brea data. The explanation they consider most plausible is behavioral differences between extinct and present-day carnivores--in particular, more contact between the teeth of predators and the bones of prey due to more thoro ugh consumption of carcasses by the extinct species. Such thorough carcass consumption implies to the researchers either that prey availability was low, at least seasonally, or that there was intense competition over kills and a high rate of carcass theft due to relatively high predator densities. Question #59. 560-01 (24039-!-item-!-188;#058&000560-01)The primary purpose of the passage is to(A) present several explanations for a well-known fact(B) suggest alternative methods for resolving a debate(C) argue in favor of a controversial theory(D) question the methodology used in a studydiscuss the implications of a research finding问主旨,我们直接来看选项A 提出了对于一个已知事实的解释有点像佛,留着B 提出了解决掉一个争端的另外一种方法,没说,杀C 支持了一个矛盾的理论,文章没有围绕一种矛盾的理论谈,杀D 质疑了研究中的方法学,没提,杀E 讨论了一个发现的implication,也有点像佛,留着A和E之间最大的不同在于A是围绕一个事实谈得而E是围绕一个发现谈的,文章是围绕两种不同动物牙齿破损程度不同这个发现谈得,选EQuestion #60. 560-02 (24085-!-item-!-188;#058&000560-02)The passage suggests that, compared with Pleistocene carnivores in other areas, Pleistocene carnivores in the La Brea area(A) included the same species, in approximately the same proportions(B) had a similar frequency of tooth fractures(C) populated the La Brea area more densely(D) consumed their prey more thoroughlyfound it harder to obtain sufficient prey细节题,我们发现这个题干中定位词有两个,一个是Pleistocene carnivores in other areas Pleistocene carnivores in the La Brea area,找哪个? Pleistocene carnivores in the La Brea area,如果包含这个词汇的只有一句,即便这句话不包含 Pleistocene carnivores in other areas这个次要矛盾。

Choice E is the best answer. The first paragraph of the passage mentions evidence discovered at the Rancho La Brea tar pits and suggests that his evidence provides information about predator-prey dynamics in the late Pleistocene era. After dismissing possible alternative explanations, the second paragraph describes what is considered to be the most likely explanation for the findings. Choice A is incorrect because the passage discusses several explanations for the findings but only in order to eliminate them as rivals of the explanation that credits behavioral difference. In addition, there is no indication of how well known the evidence regarding tooth fractures is. Choice B is incorrect because no alternative methods for resolving a debate are mentioned. Choice C is incorrect because there is no suggestion in the passage that the preferred explanation for the tooth factures is controversial. Choice D is incorrect: there is nothing in the passage to suggest that the evidence discussed in the passage or the。

A meteor stream is composed of dust particles that have been ejected from a parent comet at a variety of velocities. These particles follow the same orbit as the parent comet, but due to their differing velocities they slowly gain on or fall behind the disintegrating comet until a shroud of dust surrounds the entire cometary orbit. Astronomers have hypothesized that a meteor stream should broaden with time as the dust particles' individual orbits are perturbed by planetary gravitational fields. A recent computer-modeling experiment tested this hypothesis by tracking the influence of planetary gravitation over a projected 5,000-year period on the positions of a group of hypothetical dust particles. In the model, the particles were randomly distributed throughout a computer simulation of the orbit of an actual meteor stream, the Geminid. The researcher found, as expected, that the computer model stream broadened with time. Conventional theories, however, predicted that the distribution of particles would be increasingly dense toward the center of a meteor stream. Surprisingly, the computer model meteor stream gradually came to resemble a thick walled, hollow pipe.Whenever the Earth passes through a meteor stream, a meteor shower occurs. Moving at a little over 1,500,000 miles per day around its orbit, the Earth would take, on average, just over a day to cross the hollow, computer-model Geminid stream if the stream were 5,000 years old. Two brief periods of peak meteor activity during the shower would be observed, one as the Earth entered the thick-walled "pipe" and one as it exited. There is no reason why the Earth should always pass through the stream's exact center, so the time interval between the two bursts of activity would vary from one year to the next.Has the predicted twin-peaked activity been observed for the actual yearly Geminid meteor shower? The Geminid data between 1970 and 1979 show just such a bifurcation, a secondary burst of meteor activity being clearly visible at an average of 19 hours(1,200,000 miles)after the first burst. The time intervals between the bursts suggest the actual Geminid stream is about 3000 years old.It can be inferred from the last paragraph of the passage that which of the following must be true of the Earth as it orbits the Sun?A.Most meteor streams it encounters are more than 2, 000 years old.B.When passing through a meteor stream, it usually passes near to the stream's center.C.It crosses the Geminid meteor stream once every year.D.It usually takes over a day to cross the actual Geminid meteor stream.E.It accounts for most of the gravitational perturbation affecting the Geminid meteor解析:题干给出明确定位:It can be inferred from the last paragraph ... 于是只看最后一段:“Has the predicted twin-peaked activity been observed for the actual yearly Geminid meteor shower? Second,England suffered the normal European rate of mortality;New England, especially in the first generation of English colonists, was virtually free from infectious diseases.Third,England had an all-embracing state church;in New England membership in a church was restricted to the elect.Fourth,a high proportion of English villagers lived under paternalistic resident squires;no such class existed in New England.//By narrowing his focus to village institutions and ignoring these critical differences, which studies by Greven,Demos, and Lockridge have shown to be so important,Allen has created a somewhat distorted picture(结论核心词)of reality (本段结论句).Allen's work is a rather extreme(态度词)example of the"country community"school of seventeenth-century English history whose intemperate excesses in removing all national issues from the history of that period have been exposed by Professor Clive Holmes(注意新的人物出现).//What conclusion can be drawn, for example, from Allen's discovery that Puritan clergy who had come to the colonies from East Anglia were one-third to one-half as likely to return to England by1660as were Puritan ministers from western and northern England? We are not told(本层关键词)in what way,if at all, this discovery illuminates historical understanding.//Studies of local history have enormously expanded our horizons(优点),but(转折关系词)it is a mistake(缺点)for their authors to conclude that village institutions are all that mattered, simply because(因果关系词)their functions are all that the records of village institutions reveal.(作者态度)逻辑图:第一段:DA的研究内容及对象--DA认为实际和管理之间存在着关联性--但是DA是夸大了第二段:DA的说法忽略了差别--列举了4个差别(土地和人口、死亡、宗教、乡绅的权威)--DA描述的不是真正的现实第三段:DA的作品是个极端的例子--DA的发现能得出什么结论?并未阐明--表明“不应该强调village的重要性”并给出解释1.According to the passage, which of the following was true of most villages in seventeenth-century England?(A)The resident squire had significant authority.正确(B)Church members were selected on the basis of their social status within the community.(未提及宗教由社会地位决定)(C)Low population density restricted agricultural and economic growth.(未提及人少限制发展)(D)There was little diversity in local institutions from one region to another.(第一段的内容,段落定位错)(E)National events had little impact on local customs and administrative organization.(未提及影响小)细节题:定位到第二段,4个差别中的第四点,“很多villagers活在乡绅的权威之下”,选A2.The passage suggests that Professor Clive Holmes would most likely agree with which of the following statements?(A)An understanding of seventeenth-century English local institutions requires a consideration of national issues.正确(B)The"country community"school of seventeenth-century English history distorts historical evidence in order to establish continuity between old and new institutions.(未提及这个学派歪曲了历史证据)(C)Most historians distort reality by focusing on national concerns to the exclusion of local concerns.(未提及大部分的历史学家,只针对了DA)(D)National issues are best understood from the perspective of those at the local level.(未提及是在local的环境下最好)(E)Local histories of seventeenth-century English villages have contributed little to the understanding of village life.(未提及local的贡献小)推理题:定位到第三段第一层,“CH曝光了DA的过激之处:DA过度排除了当时的国情”即CH认为需要考虑到national issues,选A3.It can be inferred from the passage that the author of the passage considers Allen's "discovery"(see highlighted text)to be(A)already known to earlier historians(未提及)(B)based on a logical fallacy(未提及是基于一个错误的逻辑)(C)improbable but nevertheless convincing(未提及有说服力)(D)an unexplained, isolated fact(E)a new, insightful observation(未提及是深刻的见解)态度题:问作者对于DA的看法,定位到高亮部分:“没有告知如何阐述”,选D4.The author of the passage is primarily concerned with(A)substantiating a claim about a historical event(不是去证实一个claim)(B)reconciling two opposing ideas about a historical era(不是去调解)(C)disputing evidence a scholar uses to substantiate a claim about a historical event (并不是针对证据)(D)analyzing two approaches to scholarly research and evaluating their methodologies(不是在分析两种研究方式和评价它们的方法论)(E)criticizing a particular study and the approach to historical scholarship it represents 主旨题:结合文章逻辑图,选E。

Recent years have brought minority-owned businesses in the United States unprecedented opportunities—as well as new and significant risks. Civil rights activists have long argued that one of the principal reasons why Blacks, Hispanics, and other minority groups have difficulty establishing themselves in business is that they lack access to the sizable orders and subcontracts that are generated by large companies. Now Congress, in apparent agreement, has required by law that businesses awarded federal contracts of more than $500,000 do their best to find minority subcontractors and record their efforts to do so on forms filed with the government. Indeed, some federal and local agencies have gone so far as to set specific percentage goals for apportioning parts of public works contracts to minority enterprises.Corporate response appears to have been substantial.According to figures collected in 1977, the total of corporate contracts with minority businesses rose from $77 million in 1972 to $1.1 billion in 1977. The projected total of corporate contracts with minority businesses for the early 1980’s is estimated to be over 53 billion per year with no letup anticipated in the next decade. Promising as it is for minority businesses, this increased patronage poses dangers for them, too. First, minority firms risk expanding too fast and overextending themselves financially, since most are small concerns and, unlike large businesses, they often need to make substantial investments in new plants, staff, equipment, and the like in order to perform work subcontracted to them. If, thereafter, their subcontracts are for some reason reduced, such firms can face potentially crippling fixed expenses. The world of corporate purchasing can be frustrating for small entrepreneurs who get requests for elaborate formal estimates and bids. Both consume valuable time and resources, and a small company’s efforts must soon result in orders, or both the morale and the financial health of the business will suffer.A second risk is that White-owned companies may seek to cash in on the increasing apportionments throughformation of joint ventures with minority-owned concerns. Of course, in many instances there are legitimate reasons for joint ventures; clearly, White and minority enterprises can team up (team up: v.(使)结成一队, 合作, 协作) to acquire business that neither could acquire alone. But civil rights groups and minority business owners have complained to Congress about minorities being set up as “fronts (a person, group, or thing used to mask the identity or true character or activity of the actual controlling agent)”with White backing, rather than being accepted as full partners in legitimate joint ventures.Third, a minority enterprise that secures the business of one large corporate customer often runs the danger of becoming—and remaining—dependent. Even in the best of circumstances, fierce competition from larger, more established companies makes it difficult for small concerns to broaden their customer bases: when such firms have nearly guaranteed orders from a single corporate benefactor, they may truly have to struggle against complacency arising from their current success.1. The primary purpose of the passage is to(A) present a commonplace idea and its inaccuracies(B) describe a situation and its potential drawbacks(C) propose a temporary solution to a problem(D) analyze a frequent source of disagreement(E) explore the implications of a finding2. The passage supplies information that would answer which of the following questions?(A) What federal agencies have set percentage goals for the use of minority-owned businesses in public works contracts?(B) To which government agencies must businesses awarded federal contracts report their efforts to find minority subcontractors?(C) How widespread is the use of minority-owned concerns as “fronts”by White backers seeking to obtain subcontracts?(D) How many more minority-owned businesses were there in 1977 than in 1972?(E) What is one set of conditions under which a small business might find itself financially overextended?3. According to the passage, civil rights activists maintain that one disadvantage under which minority-owned businesses have traditionally had to labor (to suffer from some disadvantage or distress “labor under a delusion”) is that theyhave(A) been especially vulnerable to governmental mismanagement of the economy(B) been denied bank loans at rates comparable to those afforded larger competitors(C) not had sufficient opportunity to secure business created by large corporations(D) not been able to advertise in those media that reach large numbers of potential customers(E) not had adequate representation in the centers of government power4. The passage suggests that the failure of a large business to have its bids for subcontracts result quickly in orders might cause it to(A) experience frustration but not serious financial harm(B) face potentially crippling fixed expenses(C) have to record its efforts on forms filed with the government(D) increase its spending with minority subcontractors(E) revise its procedure for making bids for federal contracts and subcontracts5. The author implies that a minority-owned concern thatdoes the greater part of its business with one large corporate customer should(A) avoid competition with larger, more established concerns by not expanding(B) concentrate on securing even more business from that corporation(C) try to expand its customer base to avoid becoming dependent on the corporation(D) pass on some of the work to be done for the corporation to other minority-owned concerns(E) use its influence with the corporation to promote subcontracting with other minority concerns6. It can be inferred from the passage that, compared with the requirements of law, the percentage goals set by “some federal and local agencies”(lines 14-15) are(A) more popular with large corporations(B) more specific(C) less controversial(D) less expensive to enforce(E) easier to comply with7. Which of the following, if true, would most weaken the author’s assertion that, in the 1970’s, corporate response tofederal requirements (lines 18-19) was substantial(A) Corporate contracts with minority-owned businesses totaled $2 billion in 1979.(B) Between 1970 and 1972, corporate contracts with minority-owned businesses declined by 25 percent.(C) The figures collected in 1977 underrepresented the extent of corporate contracts with minority-owned businesses.(D) The estimate of corporate spending with minority-owned businesses in 1980 is approximately $10 million too high.(E) The $1.1 billion represented the same percentage of total corporate spending in 1977 as did $77 million in 1972.8. The author would most likely agree with which of the following statements about corporate response to working with minority subcontractors?(A) Annoyed by the proliferation of “front”organizations, corporations are likely to reduce their efforts to work with minority-owned subcontractors in the near future.(B) Although corporations showed considerable interest in working with minority businesses in the 1970’s, their aversion to government paperwork made them reluctant to pursue many government contracts.(C) The significant response of corporations in the 1970’s is likely to be sustained and conceivably be increased throughout the 1980’s.(D) Although corporations are eager to cooperate with minority-owned businesses, a shortage of capital in the 1970’s made substantial response impossible.(E) The enormous corporate response has all but eliminated the dangers of over-expansion that used to plague small minority-owned businesses.
