To counter our consumption, the authors advocate taxing sugary foods and controlling sales to kids under 17. There were a few different passages we had to read and answer questions about.One was about some scientists who made fake rhino horns to try to stop poachers from killing real rhinos. That one was pretty interesting!The fake horns looked and felt just like the real ones, but they put some kind of marker inside so they could tell them apart. The plan was to flood the illegal market with all these fake horns so the poachers wouldn't be able to sell the real ones anymore. Pretty clever, right?There were multiple choice questions asking things like why the scientists made the fake horns, what challenges they faced, and what the goal was. I thought that one was easy enough since the passage explained it all clearly. I got most of those right.Then there was another reading about how music can help you heal from injuries faster. It talked about this special musical therapy they use in some hospitals. Doctors will play certain types of relaxing music to help patients recover better from operations and stuff.Apparently the music helps reduce your stress levels and blood pressure. It can even help control your breathing and heart rate when you're trying to heal up. Wild, huh? I never knew music could do all that!There were some tricky vocabulary words in that one I had to figure out from context clues. But overall, if youread closely, you could get the main points and answer the questions correctly. I felt pretty good about that passage too.The next section was listening comprehension - definitely the hardest part for me! They played recordings of conversations or lectures, and we had to answer questions testing if we understood everything properly.One of them was a convo between two friends deciding what activities to do on their vacation. They went back and forth weighing the pros and cons of stuff like hiking, going to an amusement park, visiting museums, and more. It was hard to catch all the details as they were talking so quickly.Another listening passage was a professor lecturing about the history of some ancient civilization's art and architecture. There were so many dates, names, and descriptions of different buildings and artifacts to try to keep straight. I just tried my best to focus!After each listening section, we had to answer multiple choice questions about the main ideas, the speakers' attitudes, the reasons they gave for certain opinions, and other little details.I probably didn't ace that part, but I felt like I did okay considering how tough it was.Then we had to write a short essay responding to a question prompt. The one I got was: "Some people prefer to live in a small town, while others prefer to live in a big city. Which do you prefer and why?"For that question, I wrote about how I personally like living in a small town better. I talked about how it's more peaceful and quiet, you get to know all your neighbors, and everything is pretty close together so you don't need to drive super far to get places.I said big cities can be exciting too with more activities and job opportunities. But I'd rather have the cozier, tighter-knit community feel of a small town, at least for now while I'm still a kid. I tried to back up my points with some examples and reasons.
