The annual marathon in my town occurred as scheduled. My job was to follow behind the runners in an ambulance in case any of them needed medical attention. As the athletes began to pace themselves, the front runners started to disappear. It was then that my eyes were drawn to the woman in blue running shorts and a baggy white T-shirt.
I knew we were already watching our “last runner”. Her feet were turned in, yet her left knee was turned out. Her legs were so crippled and bent that it seemed impossible for her to walk, let alone run a marathon.
The driver and I watched in silence as she slowly moved forward. We would move forward a little bit, then stop and wait for her to gain some distance. Then we’d slowly move forward a little bit more. As I watched her struggle to put one foot in front of the other, I found myself breathing for her and urging her forward. I wanted her to stop, and at the same time, I prayed that she wouldn’t.
Finally, she was the only runner left in sight. I sat on the edge of my seat and watched with respect and amazement as she pushed forward with sheer determination through the last miles. When the finish line came into sight, the cheering crowds had long gone home. Yet, standing straight and proud waited a man. He was holding one end of a ribbon tied to a post. She slowly crossed through, leaving both ends of the ribbon fluttering (飘动) behind her.
I don’t know this woman’s name, but that day she became a part of my life — a part I often depend on. For her, it wasn’t about beating the other runners or winning a prize. It was about finishing what she had set out to do. When I think things are too difficult or I get those “I-just-can’t-do-it,” I think of the last runner. Then I realize how easy the task before me really is.
24. What words can best describe the woman?

D. Nothing is too tough to accomplish if one is brave enough.
27. What could be the best title for the text?
A. The Last Runner.
B. An Unforgettable Job.
C. A Humorous Stranger.
D. The Annual Marathon.

What if we had the power to control time, instead of moving from the past to the present to the future? What if we could jump, loop and travel through time in a machine? What if we could go wherever and whenever we pleased?
This ability would allow us to witness historic wonders, change decisions and see people from the past. We could right wrongs and stop wars from starting.
The mysterious puzzle of time has kept people debating its nature for hundreds of years. Science fiction writers have turned it into imaginative stories. Some scientists have even attempted to explain it using math. This math tries to make the dream of time travel come true.
The scientist Albert Einstein said that time and space are one thing. He called it “spacetime.” Einstein said that there are three dimensions in space: height, width and depth. A scientist named Hermann Minkowski added time as a fourth dimension.
Einstein introduced two ideas that have led to theories about the possibility of time travel. The first is relativity. The idea of relativity is that the force of gravity causes space to bend, which causes time to twist. The second idea focuses on special relativity. The idea is that a traveler moving super-fast through flat
spacetime will enter the future. Einstein considered time “relative” because it is measured based on where we are on Earth or in space.
Stephen Hawking is a famous scientist. He believes that a time machine will never be built. If it were possible, he thinks we would already know. If a time machine could be built, how come no one from the future has invaded us?
The first science fiction story with this theme is The Clock That Went Backward by Edward P. Mitchell, which was published in 1881. Since then, thousands of books, films and television shows have explored the idea of time travel, in which some tools such as phones, watches, photographs and old books take travelers backward and forward.
Will time travel ever happen? Who knows? Most important is to keep your eyes open and have a sense of wonder.
28. What is the author’s purpose of writing the first paragraph?
A. To draw readers’ attention to time t ravel.
B. To show people’s interest in time travel.
C. To show time and space are connected.
D. To make people believe time travel is possible.
29. Which of the following statement could Einstein agree with?
A. People can’t move faster than light.
B. Time travel is possible in the future.
C. Time travel is against scientific rules.
D. Spacetime is not a real thing in theory.
30. What is the last but one paragraph mainly about?
A. Different works about time travel.
B. Some tools used in time travel.
C. Edward P. Mitchell, the pioneer.
D. The first science fiction story.
31. What is the writer’s attitude toward time travel?
A. Cautious.
B. Approving.
C. Hopeful.
D. Doubtful.

A new device works like a solar panel, excep t that it doesn’t harvest energy from the sun. It absorbs energy from the cold night sky.
A prototype (原型) of the device produced enough electricity at night to power a small light bulb. A bigger version might one day light rooms or charge phones. It also could power electronics in remote or low-resource areas that lack electricity.
The device makes use of the temperature difference between Earth and outer space. It then uses that difference to create electricity. As long as one side of it is cooler than the other, the generator can produce electricity. The cooler side faces the sky and is attached to an aluminum plate. That plate is sealed beneath a transparent cover and surrounded with insulation (隔热材料) to keep out heat. The bottom of the generator is attached to an exposed aluminum plate. That plate is warmed by the local air. At night, the top plate can get a couple of degrees Celsius cooler than the bottom of the generator.
Researchers tested a 20-centimeter prototype one clear December night in Stanford, California. The generator produced up to about 25 milliwatts(毫瓦特) of power per square meter of device. That was enough power to light a small light-emitting diode, or LED bulb. Further improvements might increase its production to at least 500 milliwatts per square meter. To do that, the system might need more insulation around the cool top plate.
The device also could help power remote weather stations or other environmental devices, says Aaswath Raman. He is a materials scientist who worked on the device at the University of California, Los Angeles. This may be useful in polar regions that don’t see sunlight for months at a time, Raman says. “If you have some low-power load and you need to power it through three months of darkness, this might be a way.”
32. What can we know about the new device?
A. It gains energy from the sun.
B. It’ll be popular in special areas.
C. It is cooler than a solar panel.
D. It’s been widely used in life.
33. What does the author mainly talk about in Paragraph 3?
A. The working principle of the device.
B. The developing process of the device.
C. Application fields of the device.
D. Significant effects of the device.
34. How can the device produce more electricity?
A. By attaching the bottom plate to a warm plate.
B. By using it in extremely cold and clear nights.
C. By putting more insulation around the top plate.
D. By covering the top plate with a transparent lid.
35. What could be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Temperature Difference Between Earth and Outer Space
B. A Device Bringing New Hope for Those in the Cold Night
C. The Difference Between a Solar Panel and a New Device
D. A Device Using the Cold Night Sky to Produce Electricity
