第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)The world’s first self-driving taxis began picking up passengers in Singapore recently.
Select members of the public can hail (招呼) a free ride through their smartphones in taxis operated by nuTonomy, an autonomous vehicle software startup. While a number of companies, including Google and Volvo, have been testing
self-driving cars on public roads for several years, nuTonomy is the first to offer rides to the public.
Its launch in Singapore is beating ride-hailing service Uber, which plans to offer rides in autonomous cars in Pittsburgh soon.
NuTonomy is starting small—six cars now, growing to a dozen by the end of the year. The long-term goal is to have a fully self-driving taxi fleet (车队) in Singapore by 2018, to help cut the number of cars on Singapore’s overcrowded roads from 900,000 to 300,000. Eventually, the model could be adopted in cities around the world, nuTonomy hopes. “When you are able to take that many cars off the ro ad, it creates a lot of possibilities. You can create smaller roads, you can create much smaller car parks,” said Doug Parker, nuTonomy’s chief operating officer.
For now, the taxis only run in a 2.5-square-mile business and residential (住宅的) district call ed “one-north”, and pick-ups and drop-offs are limited to specified locations. Riders must have an invitation from nuTonomy to use the service. The company says dozens have signed up for the launch, and it plans to expand that list to thousands of people within a few months.
The cars—modified Renault Zoe and Mitsubishi i-MiEV electrics—have a driver in front who is prepared to take back the wheel and a researcher in the back who watches the car’s computers. Each car is fitted with six sets of Lidar—a detection system that uses lasers to operate like radar—including one that constantly spins on the roof. There are also two cameras on the dashboard to scan for obstacles (障碍) and detect changes in traffic lights.
NuTonomy was formed in 2013. Earlier this year, the company was the first to win approval from Singapore’s government to test self-driving cars in one-north. NuTonomy announced a research partnership with Singapore’s Land Transport Authority earlier this month.
Singapore is ideal because it has good weather, great infrastructrue and drivers who tend to obey traffic rules. As a land-locked island, the city of 5.4 million people is seeking creative ways to grow its economy, so it’s been supportive of autonomous vehicle research.
1、It seems that the service of self-driving taxis ________.
A.is operated with high technology

3、According to the passage, what makes it possible for Singapore to provide self-driving taxi service includes ________. A.its small area and urban population
B.support from its people and government
C.its advanced economy and technology
D.necessity to improve its infrastructure
4、What do we learn about the present self-driving taxis in Singapore?
A.Drivers drive them with the help of researchers.

C.Hundreds of people can take advantage of them.
D.Y ou do not have to pay whenever you take them.
22.(8分)Do you want to live another 100 years or more? Some experts say that scientific advances will one day enable humans to last tens of years beyond what is now seen as the natural limit of the human life span.
“I think we are knocking at the door of immortality (永生),” said Michael Zey, a Montclair State University business professor and author of two books on the future. “I think by 2075 we will see it and that’s a conservative estimate (保守的估计).”
At the conference in San Francisco, Donald Louria, a professor at New Jersey Medical School in Newark said advances in using genes as well as nanotechnology (纳米技术) make it likely that humans will live in the future beyond what has been possible in the past. “There is a great effort so that people can live from 120 to 180 years,” he said. “Some have suggested that there is no limit and that people could l ive to 200 or 300 or 500 years.”
However, many scientists who specialize in aging are doubtful about it and say the human body is just not designed to last past about 120 years. Even with healthier lifestyles and less disease, they say failure of the brain and organs will finally lead all humans to death.
Scientists also differ on what kind of life the super aged might live. “It remains to be seen if you pass 120, you know; could you be healthy enough to have good quality of life?” said Leonard Poon, direct or of the University of Georgia Gerontology Centre. “At present people who could get to that point are not in good health at all.”

24.(8分)Having three cancer patients in the same household can turn a whole family upside down. Michelle Bruce, her husband, Jeremy, and their son, Holden, all had cancer. The family moved to Michelle’s hometown of Franklin, Nebraska six years ago, so her parents could help.
Doctors found Holden’s brain tumor(肿瘤), when he was 12 years old. His family was living in a small town at the time, but there were related doctors in the state. Holden had two operations in Omaha clinic, both of which were tough. When Holden’s cancer came back again in 2012, nothing could be done. But the family didn’t give up. They reached out to Boston Children’s Hospital, which has better equipment and doctors with more experience operating on kids. After looking at Holden’s re cords, the doctor sent back her diagnosis: She was confident that she could remove the tumor. The family was beyond relieved, until they learned insurance wouldn’t cover any of the operation’s costs. The operation would cost $39,000 — more than the parents could afford. The family got desperate.
In a town of just 1,000 people, however, word traveled fast. Within days, a local woman Michelle had never met in person called to say she was planning an event to raise money for Holden. Michelle was touched.
The event was uplifting. Finally, the town raised $45,000 –enough to cover not just Holden’s hospital bills, but for Michelle and Jeremy’s trip to Boston with their son. “I just didn’t know what to say,” said Michelle. “Nobody could really believe it.”

25.(10分)As a volunteer, Charlie Starbuck has helped to plant tress on the streets of San Francisco. He has them in just about every part of this city. Walk a block or two in virtuall y any neighborhood, and you will find Mr. Starbuck’s fingerprints are there. Whatever tree species you might see there, chances are excellent that Starbuck helped plant it with his own hands.
Starbuck has volunteered with a citywide tree-planting program s ince 1981; that’s over thirty years of weekly plantings without pay. “For Charlie to be that consistent,” says Doug Wildman, program director of San Francisco’s Friends of the Urban Forest (FUF). “Well, he is our rock.”
Despite all its charm, San Francisco is not particularly green. Sandy soil, salty air, lots of wind and narrow streets are common explanations for its low tree count. For more than three decades, Starbuck has been on a mission to change that. He acts as a guide and teacher to home-owners and volunteers and teaches them how to plant trees. He loves to talk about trees. “My current favorite is the strawberry tree,” he says. Tree experts here are constantly on the look out for species that can handle the local climate. The strawberry tree, with its mock red fruit that hangs in clusters, is in high demand.
Care is relatively simple. Most of San Francisco has sandy soil, so it is almost impossible to overwater the trees, Starbuck says. Just before a young tree goes in the ground, Starbuck uses a box cutter to make vertical slices down each side of the root ball so the roots don’t continue to grow in a circular way, as they do in their containers.
He is also particular about staking(用柱子支撑)the tree. Three poles are driven in, and then soft cloth straps are attached to each pole so that the tree can wave a bit. The ability to wave actually strengthens the trunk.
While the city may still be short on trees, nearly 1,000 new trees took root here last year thanks to FUF. It receives nearly half of its funds from the federal government and most of the rest from state and local governments, individuals,
corporations and foundations. On a walk through his own neighborhood, Pacific Heights, Starbuck has a tree story for almost every block. His destination now is a corner of Nob Hill. “All you used to see here were concrete and parked cars,” Starbuck explains. “But now,” he says with pride, “you can see some green.”
Starbuck was part of a team that planted magnolias(木兰)recently there. “it’s the before and after,” Starbuck says. “That’s what it’s about for me.”
1、What does Doug Wildman think of Starbuck?
A.He is the founder of FUF
B.He is dependable volunteer of FUF
C.He is hard to get along with
D.He has set an example to others
2、Why is probably Starbuck involved in this voluntary work?
A.Because he wants to plant more trees
B.Because he hopes to impress the importance of planting trees on people
C.Because he hopes to change the situation San Francisco faces
D.Because he wants to get more support from the government
3、What does the last paragraph imply about Starbuck?
A.He can predict what the future is like
B.He can sum up what happened in the past
C.He considers it his duty to bring changes
D.He understands the past and future
4、What is the purpose of this passage?
A.To explain the roles of trees in big cities
B.To call on people to plant more trees in cities
C.To describe the bad situation of San Francisco
D.To introduce a man’s effort to plant trees
