奥林匹克运动会（简称奥运会）是国际奥林匹克委员会主办的 包含多种体育运动项目的国际性体育运动会，每四年一届，分 为夏季奥运会（“奥运会”）、冬季奥运会（“冬奥会”）、 夏季青年奥运会（“青奥会”）和冬季青年奥运会。现代奥运 会是全球影响最大国际体育盛会之一，仅次于国际足联世界杯 足球赛。 奥林匹克运动会最早起源于两三千年前的古希腊，因为举办地 在奥林匹亚而得名。后来古希腊没落，奥运从此停办了近1,500 年，直到近代，19世纪末由法国的顾拜旦创立了有真正奥运精 神的现代奥林匹克运动会。从此，自1896年开始奥林匹克运动 会每4年就举办一次，只有两次世界大战中中断过3次（分别是 在1916年、1940年和1944年），更确立了会期不超过16日的传 统。奥林匹克运动会现在已经成为了和平与友谊的象征。现国 际奥委会主席是巴赫。 2008年，在中国北京成功举办北京奥运会。
