第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)If 62 is the number in red on the top of your math test, for most of us, it's a total disaster. Your entire week is ruined, and 62 is what races through your head for the rest of the day. If 9 is the number of likes on that cute photo you posted the other day, many will feel rather disappointed.
Our lives have become a constant system of ranks, assessments, and numbers. The days of passing judgment on others based on personality are gone, and now we judge based on how good a person's
numbers are. We compare ourselves to the numbers of others, such as how low another person's weight is how high their paycheck. Self-worth is no longer based on quality of character, but quantity of numbers.
In today's social media consumed society,it has never been easier for people to broadcast their numbers to the world.A simple click of a button can take you to a page where you can observe the number of friends or followers a person has. Teenagers have taken on this mentality that if you don't have a certain number of followers, then you aren't“cool”. Many feel they a re not important if very few people are witnessing their status updates. This state of mind is harmful and not at all accurate.Twitter and Facebook can let the world witness your updates, but they will never let anyone see who you really are. In the
end.self-worth should be based on what you think of yourself, not what the world thinks of you.
So next time you receive a failing grade or you lose a follower, remember that these things cannot and should not define(定义)you. You are not your numbers. You are a person-a3-D living and breathing person with ideas and creativity and love that the rigidity of numbers cannot represent. You are the things you love and the things you laugh at and the way you treat others.
1、How does the author sound in Paragraph 2?
A.Regretful. B.Conservative. C.Doubtful. D.Friendly.
2、According to the passage, teenagers believe it cool to .
A.display their status updates B.post their daily doings online
C.win recognition on social media D.define their self-worth themselves
3、What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Numbers make What You Are B.Y ou Are More Than a Number
C.It's Your Number That Matters D.Let's Stop Sharing Our Numbers
22.(8分) A gaming company in New Zealand is luring employees. from around the world by offering unlimited paid annual leave, a share in the company’s profits and no set work hours.
Dean Hall became famous in international gaming circles for being the lead designer on popular video game DayZ. After searching the world for a location for his new gaming studio, Rocketwerkz, New Zealander Hall settled on the small university town of Dunedin on the south island’s east coast, where land is cheap and creative start-ups have become an important pan of the city’s identity.
Rocketwerkz’s flexible work culture is now drawing talent from around the globe, with Hall receiving 300 messages of inquiry since a local newspaper wrote about his studio last week.
Last year, when the company was still in its infancy(婴儿期), baby cats would also make a regular appearance in the office as a form of fighting stress, and Friday afternoons are generally reserved for sports and games to end the week on a playful note.
“The first time I heard about the idea of unlimited paid leave in places like Silicon Valley it was about the problems it caused. A culture had appeared where employees took no leave,” said Hall.
“So to address that, our staff are issued the standard New Zealand annual leave of four weeks, but they can also take unlimite d leave in addition to that.”
Emily Lampitt, from Britain, is a 3D junior artist who has been with the company for a year and a half. She says the flexible work culture was a huge factor in her decision to move to New Zealand.
“The flexibility here has made me feel much more relaxed” she says. I “That internal stress I used to feel in a traditional work environment has gone, so when I am at work now it is because I want to be, because I am passionate(有激情的), not because I am afraid of my boss or watching the clock.”

23.(8分)Four Wild Animal Species Were Endangered
Maybe you can still see them at the zoo. But that doesn’t mean they’re doing alright in the wild.
Tigers
All six tiger species are endangered, with Sumatran tigers and South Chin tigers at a seriously endangered status. The main reasons for their population decline are illegal hunting and destroyed habitats(栖息地), as humans clear forests to gather timber(木材)and build roadways. Only about 3890 tigers presently live in the wild.
Ground squirrels
That’s right, even squirrels are endangered, specifically the San Joaquin ground squirrel. Native to California, USA, these guys have been disappearing since 1979 on account of the construction and human developments going through their habitat. Their total population is unknown , but it could be anywhere between 124000 and 413000.
Giraffes
The International Union for the Conservation of Nature recently put giraffes at a vulnerable status, the level just before endangered. The giraffe population has declined 40 percent in the last 30 years, primarily due to loss of habitat and illegal hunting. Some giraffes are killed just for their tails, which are considered status symbols in Africa.
Asian elephants
The main threat to Asian elephants, one of the most intelligent animals, is their shrinking habitat. As the human population grows, people invade their land to build roads and railway tracks. Elephants in Myanmar are at an especially high risk for being captured and traded or used illegally in the tourist industry. Fewer than 50000 are left on the entire continent.
1、What is the total population of tigers living in the wild?
A.Around 3890.
B.50000.
C.124000.
D.413000.
2、Which of the following is considered one of the most intelligent animals?

4、Which word can best describe the present situation for protecting wild animals?
A.Satisfactory.
B.Optimistic.
C.Urgent.
D.Stable.
24.(8分)In a recent series of experiments at the University of California, researchers studied toddlers’ thinking about winners and losers, bullies (欺凌) and victims.
In the first experiment, toddlers (学步儿童) watched a scene in which two puppets (木偶) had
conflicting goals: One was crossing a stage from right to left, and the other from left to right. The puppets met in the middle and stopped. Eventually one puppet bowed down and moved aside, letting the other one pass by. Then researchers asked the toddlers which puppet they liked. The result: 20 out of 23 toddlers picked the higher-status puppet — the one that did not bow or move aside. It seems that individuals can gain status for being dominant (占优势的) and toddlers like winners better than losers.
But then researchers had another question: Do toddlers like winners no matter how they win? So, researchers did another experiment very similar to the one described above. But this time, the conflict ended because one puppet knocked the other down and out of the way. Now when the toddlers were asked who they liked, the results were different: Only 4 out of 23 children liked the winner.
These data suggest that children already love a winner by the age of 21-31 months. This does not necessarily mean that the preference is inborn: 21 months is enough time to learn a lot of things. But if a preference for winners is something we learn, we appear to learn it quite early.
Even more interesting, the preference for winners is not absolute. Children in our study did not like a winner who knocked a competitor down. This suggests that already by the age of 21-31 months, children’s liking for winners is balanced with other social concerns, including perhaps a general preference for nice or helpful people over aggressive ones.
In a time when the news is full of stories of public figures who celebrate winning at all costs, these results give us much confidence. Humans understand dominance, but we also expect strong individuals to guide, protect and help others. This feels like good news.
1、One of the purposes of the experiments is to ________.
A.teach toddlers how to gain higher status
B.offer toddlers a chance to watch a scene
C.observe the process of toddlers’ solving a conflict
D.find out toddlers’ attitude toward winners and losers
2、The toddlers regarded bowing and moving aside as a sign of ________.
A.obeying rules
B.gaining status
C.giving in to the other
D.showing good manners
3、What does the second experiment tell us about toddlers?
A.They are excellent learners.
B.They are always changeable.
C.They show mercy to the loser.
D.They value kindness over winning.
4、What does the author think of the results of the series of experiments?
A.Disappointing. B.Encouraging.
C.Unexpected. D.Controversial.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29.Dear teacher and schoolmates,
It’s a great pleasure for me to be here and share my experience of learni ng English with you.
To begin with, we should learn to learn efficiently, adopting some effective methods. Besides, developing a good habit is also of importance. It really benefits me a lot to preview lessons, get actively involved in class, and review what has been taught after class. Most importantly, I often listen to English programs on TV and on the radio and consult some English information from the Internet and other sources in my spare time, which helps to improve my English.
Now, I’d like to make some suggestions on English teaching in our school. Firstly, we should be given more opportunities to use what we’ve learned in class. Secondly, I hope our teachers can recommend more interesting books and magazines in order to make us better understand English. Finally, I suggest we have more English activities, such as English contests and English corners.
Thank you for listening.

I drove along a road near my home, and this new road and infrastructure was created about
12 years ago. As I drove along it tonight I remembered elly.
elly was a student when this new road was constructed. Her mother passed away when elly was very young. She and her brother were raised by her father. She started to settle in college. The year after I taught her, a dreadful thing happened.
elly’s dad was about to turn on to the new road It was a very busy road and was designed so that the user coul d not automatically turn right. elly’s father was not familiar with the road He was driving in the morning with a right turn and then he met with a fatal accident.
Her father’s death put her into bad situation. So I decided to help the poor girl. I wrote that I would help her with one of the 6 modules that she still had to complete on her second and final year of her programme. I knew it would be difficult for elly to gain an element of normality but I intended to help her.
At that time I was just divorced from my husband and living in rented accommodation near where elly lived. Things were tough for me but I committed to help elly, I brought elly to my home where I tutored and supported her through the full module. I prepared all the notes. I got her to complete all the assignments at my home so that she would stay focused.
My support also helped her focus on her studies at such a terribly sad time in her life.。
