In fact, all these media themselves depend on newspapers to bring them information that they then process and distribute as their own brand of news. Now many newspapers are locked in a struggle for survival. If they lose —which is by no means impossible — we all lose. The great task for editors and publishers is to respond to the competitive challenge caused by online news, and at the same time use their own online news to increase their profits (利润). As yet, they haven’t figured out a smooth and sure way to do that.So they cut some more to get profit. The cuts in size that they are making are in some cases risky and in others without considering the results. With every cut, publishers tirelessly argue that readers won’t even know the difference. The trouble is that by the time customers do notice that they are getting less for their money, it will be too late — too late to notice the reduction in the number of readers. The other big cuts, of course, are in staff (员工). The victims would be the oldest and most experienced workers because they are the highest paid. While there is plenty of tired deadwood among them, there is also a lot of talent. When experienced staff leave in large numbers — as they often do now — the newspaper loses great professional memory. But the real loser is the readers, who are suddenly robbed of the insights (见识) that only the experienced reporters can bring. As for the future, there is at least one big, bright sign: intelligent young people will continue to flood into journalism in urgent search of jobs, despite its high demands and modest (不太高的) pay.1. The underlined word “deadwood” (in Paragraph 5) may refer to “_____”.A. the staff who are going to retireB. workers who are experiencedC. people who are no longer useful or neededD. reporters who are tired of covering events2. Who will be the real loser if newspapers lose according to the passage?A. Publishers.B. Readers.C. Editors.D. Writers.3. What can we learn from the passage?A. All the medium could report news deeply.B. The editors and publishers have found a good way to make huge profits.C. The cuts in newspaper’s size would reduce the number of readers.D. Online news has no threat to the newspaper.4. The author seems to agree with the view that _____.A. journalism is a job offering highest pay for high demandsB. experienced workers are the last to be laid offC. the challenge of newspapers is that there are not enough intelligent young peopleD. it is possible that newspapers may not survive in the end三、短文改错Friends play important role in everyone’s life. English kids discuss the Liverpool's football team in a Paris pub. Some Parisians have started to travel to work in London. In the 19th century, Charles Dickens compared the two cities, London and Paris, in A Tale of Two Cities. These days, it might be A tale of One City.As there are few jobs at home over recent years, perhaps 250,000 Frenchmen moved across the channel. With an undersea tunnel, they could travel between cities in three hours. The European Union freed them from immigration and customs.Paris, rich in beauty, is more stylish. But London feels more full of life, and more fun until the pubs shut down."For me, the difference is that London is real, alive," said Trevor Wheeler, a financial expert.Chantal Jaouen, a professional designer, agrees. "I am French, but I'll stay in London,'' she said. There is, of course, the other view. Julie Lenoux is a student who moved to London two years ago. "I think people laugh more in Paris," she said."Both cities have changed beyond recognition," said Larry Collins, an author and sometimes a Londoner.Like most people who know both cities well, he finds the two now fit together comfortably."I first fell in love with Paris in the 1950s. Things are so much more ordered, and life is better."But certainly not cheaper. In some parts of London, rents can be twice those on Avenue Foch in Paris.Deciding between London and Paris requires a lifestyle choice.Like Daphne Benoit, a French journalism student with perfect English, many young people are happy to be close enough so they don't have to choose."I love Paris, my little neighbourhood, the way I can walk around a centre, but life is too organized , "she said. "In London, you can be whoever you want. No one cares."1. It can be inferred that ___________.A. Paris and London are the two biggest cities in the worldB. in the 19th century, Dickens told his stories in the two citiesC. London and Paris used to be separatedD. Liverpool is a big city in France2. According to this passage, which of the following is TRUE?A. People feel it difficult to find a job in Paris.B. People can't travel to London without a passport.C. People can travel to London without a passport.D. People can find any job in London.3. According to this passage we know that _________.A. Parisians enjoy English food more than their ownB. Londoners seldom travel to Paris on holidaysC. both cities have their advantagesD. young people prefer to live in London4. Which city is better to live in according to the passage?A. Paris.B. London.C. Both cities.D. It just depends.5. What's the meaning of the last sentence?A. People can do everything in London.B. People will feel lonely in London.C. People in London enjoy living in different ways.D. People in London enjoy a lawless life.三、短文改错:Last night when Steven and I was having a walk in the street, we suddenly heard a painful cry for help under a tree nearby. We quickly ran to the tree and found a boy laying on the ground with a stick in his leg. He had fallen of the tree. Steven suggested we pulled the stick out at once, but I disagreed, Because I had learned little about first aid at school. The stick in the leg would help controlling the bleeding. As there was no telephone,we managed to find a taxi. We took the boy to the hospital. The doctors examined the boy fast and we got to know where the boy lived. So we telephoned his parents and left after he came to the hospital. The company has developed a tiny chip(芯片) that fits inside a football and determines whether the ball has crossed the goal line, by being able to discover its exact location on the field. The world football organization, FIFA, has shown interest in the technology. It is very possible that the new technology will be used in the 2006 World Cup in Germany."We've been testing the technology at the main soccer stadium in Nuremberg for some time and more recently in an under-17 FIFA Cup in Peru," said Gunter Rohmer, a director of the company. "The technology has performed well, and we're pretty optimistic that it will be used at the games in Germany next year."The chip only weighs 12 grams, and is placed in the center of the football. It sends 2,000 signals a second to a receiver network of 12 antennas(天线),placed around the field. The receivers then send information about the ball's location to a central computer, and because it works in real time, it can immediately tell the referee whether a goal has been scored. The chip even can tell when the ball crosses the line in mid-air. Oliver Braun, one of the inventors of the chip, says that feedback from German referees was generally positive. Germany sports-wear giant Adidas is also optimistic about using this kind of chip in other ball sports.FIFA aims to test the technology later this year at another game in Japan before deciding whether or not to introduce it in all 12 stadiums in Germany for next year's World Cup.1. Carlos Technologies is pleased because ________.A. football fans are angry with refereesB. their new product can satisfy football fansC. their new product will have a good marketD. they can sell a lot of football in the future2. Carlos Technologies can't afford the high price for advertising their productB. Mistakes in production are also a kind of advertisementC. The underlined word "feedback" probably means ___________.A. information given back by a userB. advice given by someoneC. supplying food to customersD. food given back by consumers4. The new product has drawn attention from some _________.A. famous peopleB. refereesC. big companiesD. CountriesB.George Banks was a clever journalist. He worked for a good newspaper, and he liked arguing very much. He argued with anybody, and about anything. Sometimes the people whom he argued with were as clever as he was, but often they were not.He did not mind arguing with stupid people at all: he knew that he could never persuade them to agree, because they could never really understand what he was saying, and the stupider they were, the surer they were that they were right; but he often found that stupid people said very amusing things. At the end of one argument which George had with one of these less clever people, the man said something which George has always remembered and which has always amused him. It was, “Well, Sir, you should never forget this: there are always three answers to every question: you answer, my answer, and the correct answer.”5. 高中英语人教版必修五Unit 4 Making the news同步练习 (3)D卷姓名:________ 班级:________ 成绩:________一、阅读选择 (共2题;共18分)1. (8分) (2017高二上·铜陵开学考) 阅读理解My father was always a good gardener. One of my earliest memories is standing without shoes in the freshly tilled (翻耕的) soil, my hands blackened from digging in the ground. As a child, I loved following Dad around in the garden. I remember Dad pushing the tiller (耕作机) ahead in perfectly straight lines. Dad loved growing all sorts of things: yellow and green onions, watermelons almost as big as me, rows of yellow com, and our favorite—red tomatoes. As I grew into a teenager, I didn't get so excited about gardening with Dad. Instead of magical land of possibility, it had turned into some kind of prison. As Dad grew older, his love for gardening never disappeared. After all the kids were grown and had started families of their own, Dad turned to gardening like never before. Even when he was diagnosed with cancer, he still took care of his garden. But then, the cancer, bit by bit, invaded his body. I had to do the things he used to do. What really convinced me that Dad was dying was the state of his garden that year. The rows and rows of multicolored vegetables were gone. Too tired to weed them, he simply let them be.For the first few years after he died, I couldn't even bear to look at anyone's garden without having strong memories pour over me like cold water from a bucket. Three years ago, I decided to plant my own garden and started out with just a few tomatoes. That morning, after breaking up a fair amount of soil, something caught the comer of my eye and I had to smile. It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, happily playing in the freshly tilled soil.(1) Why did the author like the garden when he was a child?A . He wanted to be a garden-crazy like his father.B . He loved being in the garden with his father.C . The garden was full of his favorite food.D . There was a great harvest.B . The garden was almost deserted.C . No plant grew in the garden at all.D . The author's son took charge of the garden.(4) Why did the author start his garden with tomatoes?A . He wanted to honor his father.B . His son liked the fields of tomatoes.C . He only knew how to grow tomatoes.D . He thought tomatoes were easy to manage.【考点】2. (10分)(2013·江西) 阅读理解The light from the campfire brightened the darkness, but it could not prevent the damp cold of Dennis's Swamp (沼泽地) creeping into their bones. It was a strange place. Martin and Tom wished that they had not accepted Jack's dare. They liked camping, but not near this swamp.“So,” Martin asked as they sat watching the hot coals. “How did this place get its name ? ”“Are you sure you want to hear it ? It's a scary story,” warned Jack.“Of course!” cried out Tom. “If there were anything to be scared of, you wouldn't have chosen this place!”“Ok, but don't say I didn't warn you,” said Jack, and he began this tale.“Way back in time, a man called Dennis tried to start a farm here. He built that cottage over there to live in . In those days, the area looked quite different — it was covered with tall trees and the swamp was a crystal-clear river. After three hard years, Dennis had cleared several fields and planted crops. He was so proud of his success that he refused to listen to advice.“ 'You are clearing too much land, ' warned one old man. ' The land is a living thing. It will hit back at you if you abuse it. '“ ' Silly fool,' said Dennis to himself. 'If I clear more land, I can grow more crops. I'll become wealthier. He's just jealous!'”“Dennis continued to chop do wn trees. Small animals that relied on them for food and shelter were destroyed. He was so eager to expand his farm that he did not notice the river flowing slowly towards his door. He did not notice salt seeping to the surface of the land. He did not notice swamp plants chokingall the native plants.”“What happened? ” Martin asked. It was growing colder. He trembled, twisting his body closer to the fire.“The land hit back ---- just as the old man warned, ” Jack shrugged. “Dennis disappeared Old folks around here believe that swamp plants moved up from the river and dragged him underwater. His body was never found.”“What a stupid story, ” laughed Tom. “Plants can't …” Before he had finished speaking, he screamed and fainted (晕倒). Humans are born with a sense of fairness that most other animals seem not to share, but it’s not been clear exactly when this concept starts to develop.Dr.Alva Zhao and her colleagues conducted a series of tests to measure just how much children care about equality at different ages.In three different versions of a game, children were asked to choose between two ways of sharing a number of sweets with themselves and an unfamiliar partner. They could choose, for example, between one for me and one for you,or just having one for themselves. At the age of three, children were “almost completely selfish”,says Zhao. They refused to give sweets away even if it made no difference to themselves. But by the age of eight, children generally preferred the fair option, sharing a prize equally rather than keeping it all to themselves.Several other factors influenced how fair the children were. The team found that children without brothers or sisters were 28% more likely to share than children with brothers or sisters. On the other hand, the youngest children in a family were 17% less willing to share than children who had only younger brother or sister. In addition,if children knew that their partner was from the same playgroup or school, they were more concerned about being fair. This suggests that being nice to people you know is something that develops a sense of equality.1.The main idea of the first paragraph is________.A.parents know clearly when their kids are more willing to shareB.the kids’ willingness of sharing is learned from their familyC.the older the kids are,the more selfish they will becomeD.kids become more generous when they reach a certain age2.The tests conducted by Dr.Alva Zhao and her colleagues were aimed at________. A.how kids develop a quality of fairness in gamesB.children’s awareness of equality at different agesC.the reasons why children care about equalityD.children’s attitudes towards other partners3.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A.Children under three know little about being fair.B.Children above eight years old become less selfish.C.Children with brothers or sisters tend to be more generous.D.The youngest child in a family tends to be less generous.4.We can learn that children care more about equality while with________. A.unknown people B.nice peopleC.familiar people D.fair people(2009年宜昌第一次调研,A)The United Nations says more than 900 million people worldwide do not have enough to eat.Officials say 100 million more could go hungry this year because of the food and financial crises. To deal with the situation, the UN World Food Program has started a project to help small farmers. These farmers are mainly women. Many cannot produce enough food even to feed and support their own families. The new effort is called Purchase for Progress,or P4P.It aims to connect local farmers with dependable markets. That way, they could get a chance to sell their surplus (剩余) at competitive prices.P4P will be tested in as many as 21 countries during the next five years. The biggest contributor to the project is Bill Gates, through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.Another donor (捐款者) is the Howard Buffett Foundation, led by a son of the American investor Warren Buffett. The government of Belgium is also supporting the project in a former colony (殖民地),now the Democratic Republic of Congo.Together these donors have provided more than 76 million dollars for projects in Africa and Central America.Purchase for Progress will work with United Nations agencies, governments and nongovernmental organizations to help increase crop production. The World Bank Group and other partners are to help train farmers in better crop management and marketing skills. The World Food Program says it expects to buy 40,000 tons of food in the first year using methods carried out by the project. That will be enough to feed 250,000 people. P4P is expected to develop food cooperatives and longterm agreements for buying corn, wheat and other food crops.About 350,000 farmers could be assisted. Officials say the project will change the way the World Food Program buys food in developing countries.Executive Director Josette Sheeran says this is the first time her agency will buy a large amount of food from small farmers. The agency has traditionally bought most of its food from developing countries, but through larger trading organizations.5.From the passage,we know that________.A.in all 900 million people worldwide lack foodB.a project has been started to help women farmersC.there are only two donors to help the projectD.some farmers still cannot support their families6.According to the passage,________will work hard to deal with the situation. (8分)(2019·宁夏模拟) 阅读理解My wife, daughter, and I moved into our home nine years ago and we spent a lot of time and energy in the yard to get it looking like the way it does today. We live on a corner, higher than street level, and the entire side of the yard is surrounded by a professionally built rock wall. The front of the house though is another story because instead of a wall along the sidewalk, the rocks appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if someone were in a hurry to finish. We did the best we could with what we had to work with and called this area our "rock garden". Whenever we had leftover flowers or plants, Denise or I would stick them out front, just to bring some color to the area. We would do all of the yard work on our own, even the tiring weed-pulling.Last summer I had reached the end of the rock garden and found a tiny little plant that I could not immediately identify, I knew I didn't plant it and Denise claimed that she didn't either. We decided to let it continue growing until we could figure out what it was.Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the mystery plant, it appeared to be a Sunflower with a tall skinny stalk(茎,杆)and only one head on it. I decided to baby it along and weed around it. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something unusual. The Sunflower had not started where I saw the stalk begin. It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun. That's when I realized that if a tiny little Sunflower didn't let a big rock stand in its way of developing, we too have the ability of doing the same thing. Once our environment begins to see that we believe in ourselves like that little Sunflower, we can attain the same nourishment(营养)and growth as well.Stand tall like the Sunflower and be proud of who and what you are and the environment will beginto support you. You will find a way to go under or around your big obstacle in order to reach your desires.(1) We can know from the first paragraph that ______.A . the author finished building his home hurriedlyB . the author's family have lived in this home for nine yearsC . the author's home is made of rock wallsD . there is a wall along the sidewalk(2) The author found it unusual that ______.A . the mystery plant turned out to be a SunflowerB . the Sunflower had a tall stalk and only one headC . the Sunflower grew under and around a big rockD . the Sunflower had started where the stalk was seen(3) Which of the following best describes the Sunflower?A . Brave and stubbornB . Confident and persistentC . Optimistic and modestD . Mysterious and devoted(4) What can be inferred from this passage?A . Human beings are able to remove obstaclesB . The universal truth made the sunflower surviveC . A big rock blocked out the sunlight of the sunflowerD . We can achieve success as long as we are self-confident【考点】二、单词拼写 (共1题;共1分)3.
