(A)China in flu fight
AS China faces up to a battle against bird flu, the government announced a range of control measures it believes will bring the disease under control.
H5N1 avian influenza, known commonly as bird flu, has killed at least 16 people across Asia and was confirmed (确定) in China on January 27. No human cases have been found in the mainland but, as of Friday, 13 of the country's 31 provinces, autonomous regions (自治区), and municipalities (直辖市) had reported the disease in poultry.
"It remains a difficult task for China to prevent and control the disease but the government is confident in the fight,"said Vice-Minister of Agriculture Liu Jian.
He gave details of a range of measures designed to stop the disease spreading. Poultry within 3km of infected farms is to be killed and those within 5km vaccinated. Meanwhile, there will be constant monitoring (监控) and daily reports on the disease across the country, and increased production of bird flu vaccines.
Among the 11 Asian countries and regions affected by bird flu in animals, only Viet Nam and Thailand have reported human cases. The people infected were reported to have caught the disease from poultry.
While the World Health Organization (WHO) has said there is "no proof of human-to-human transmission"of bird flu, it admitted that two sisters who died of bird flu in Viet Nam may have caught it from their brother.
The big fear is that the disease could combine with a human influenza virus (病毒) to create a deadly new disease that kills millions of people across the globe.
Peter Cordingley, spokesman of the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office based in Manila, the Philippines, said that Asian countries affected by bird flu should introduce a more healthy way of raising and selling chickens.
Many Asian farmers live closely with their animals and sell live chickens on the market. This greatly increases the possibility of humans being infected with bird flu.
"They have to completely change their lifestyle and attitude towards animals,"he said.
How to stay healthy
* Keep fit and well through regular exercise;
* Avoid infected poultry and infected people;
* Avoid eating raw (生的) or under-done poultry and eggs;
* Make sure there is good ventilation (通风) in your home;
* Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing;
* Wash your hands frequently.

(B) Mans mission to Mars
FOR a long time, humans have used technology to study the world around us, and Mars is the latest place we're using machines to explore. Besides earth, the "red planet" is seen as the one place in our solar system (太阳系) most likely to have life.
Early last month, the first American robot, Spirit ("勇气"号), landed on Mars without any problems. Opportunity ("机遇"号), the second robot, touched down on the planet's surface more than a week ago.
Scientists are very excited about these machines's safe landing on Mars. It means that now we have an excellent chance to look for water and other signs of life. So far, the rovers (探测车) have found some stones that could prove Mars was once a wet and warm planet.
But the trips made by Spirit and Opportunity were dangerous. Mars is often called the "death planet" because in the past its environment has been unfriendly to the robot explorers.
"Mars tends to eat spacecraft,"said Edward Weiler, a NASA scientist. "It is the graveyard (墓地) of many, many robots.
Before Spirit and Opportunity, about three dozen spacecraft have been sent to Mars since the 1960s. Two-thirds of them have failed.
Below is a list of the robotic landers (着陆器) successfully sent to Mars --as well as those that weren't quite so lucky.
1. Nov. 4, 1962: Korabl 13 lander (Soviet Union). Failed; broke apart near earth.
2. Aug. 9, 1973: Mars 7 lander (Soviet Union). Failed; missed the planet by 1,300km.
3. Aug. 20, 1975: Viking 1 orbiter (轨道器) and lander (US). Succeeded; landed on July 20, 1976. The first successful Mars landing. Viking 1 studied the planet's weather and soil. Stopped working in 1982.
4. Sept. 9, 1975: Viking 2 orbiter and lander (US). Succeeded; landed on September 3, 1976. Worked together with Viking 1. Shut down in 1980.
5. Nov. 16, 1996: Mars 96 orbiter and lander (Russia). Failed; fell back to Earth.
6. Dec. 4, 1996: Mars Pathfinder lander (US). Succeeded; reached Mars on July 4, 199
7. The lander brought a rover, which could drive around on Mars like a small car. The lander and rover sent back pictures and weather information. Stopped working in 1997.
7. Jan. 3, 1999: Mars Polar Lander (US). Failed; a software problem caused it to crash on Mars.
8. June 2, 2003: Mars Express and Beagle 2 orbiter and lander (Europe). Failed; lost after landing on Mars.
9. June 10, 2003: Spirit rover (US). Succeeded; landed on January 3 and had computer problems but soon resumed (连续) work. It is now searching for water on the planet.
10. July 7, 2003: Opportunity rover (US). Succeeded; arrived three weeks later than Spirit, and now the two rovers are working together.

(C)Whole new ball game
LAST week, millions of Chinese viewers tuned into CCTV 5 to watch two teams of men in colourful clothing chase a ball around a field.
But the New England Patriots (爱国者队) and Carolina Panthers (黑豹队) were not playing soccer--they were competing for American football's greatest prize, the Super Bowl.
The first recorded game of American football was played between a Canadian and an American university more than 100 years ago, using a mixture of soccer and rugby (英式橄榄球) rules. The Super Bowl itself was first contested in 1967, but 2004 was the first time the game reached Chinese TV screens.
In American football, teams score points by carrying a leather ball into the other team's goal area, known as the end zone. When a team carries the ball into the other side's end zone, this is called a touchdown (达阵).
Players on one team can throw the ball forward to each other or pass it from hand to hand to move up the field, while the other team tries to stop them. Players are allowed to tackle (绊倒) each other to stop the ball from moving. Sometimes this is quite physical so padding (衬垫) and helmets are worn to prevent injury. A touchdown is worth six points, and a further point can be won by kicking the ball between two upright posts. Teams can also kick a field goal (射门得分) during the game for three points. A game is made up of four quarters (节) each lasting 15 minutes.
American football is very popular because it exhibits a number of athletic skills, such as running, jumping, catching, throwing and kicking. There is also hitting and tackling, which can appear violent sometimes!
The best-known league in the United States is the National Football League (NFL), which is made up of 30 teams, and the Super Bowl is its championship game. One of the most famous players is New England star Tom Brady, who was named the Most Valuable Player as his team won the Super Bowl last week. Brady plays in the quarterback (四分卫) position, and is the player responsible for throwing the ball to his teammates.
Now the Super Bowl has arrived in China, maybe the game will become just as popular as basketball or soccer!
