When 16-year-old Sergio Duran Jr wants to do his homework every night, he leaves his family’s mobile home in the desert of the Coachella Valley, about 130 miles east of Los Angeles, California. He walks five minutes down the dusty road, to a grove of palm trees, where he finds a school bus parked there by his local school district. Plopping down on the ground next to the bus, Duran pulls out an Apple iPad —also provided by the school district —and connects to the wi-fi that’s streaming from inside the bus.
This is his only reliable internet connection. And without this bus, getting his homework done every day would be a monumental task. Because even if schools provide pupils with state-of-the-art, handheld, connected technology, what good is it if they can’t use it at home? It’s not that Duran doesn’t have internet access at home. It’s that the service is extremely unreliable. And he is far from alone.
The Coachella Valley Unified School District, where Duran lives, is one of the poorest counties in the United States: 95% of the district lives below the national poverty level. Many of Duran’s fellow pupils, he says, live in similar circumstances. There’s a single I nternet connection that’s shared by a whole slew of family members: cousins, uncles — some living under the same roof, some nearby — and neighbors, too. It gets so congested that it often slows to a temporary stop. And those are the times when service is not available at all.
21. Where does Sergio Duran do his homework?
A. At home.
B. By the school bus.
C. At school.
D. In Coachella Valley.
22. Why doesn’t Duran use the internet at home?
A. There is no Internet access.
B. There is no vacancy for him.
C. He doesn’t want to stay at home.
D. The internet access isn’t dependable.

A. memorable
B. meaningful
C. difficult
D. impossible
24. What does the underlined “It” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. the house
B. the community
C. the school district
D. the internet connection

Cultural practices, cultural differences, local manners, and mores: you traveling the globe, everything from greeting to eating can be an opportunity to do the wrong thing, which not only embarrass yourself but offend your host. Look out and try to avoid mistakes while going abroad.

Left-handed? Attempt to change - even children who are left-handed are taught to eat with their right hand--or at least explain yourself to your fellow diners before plunging in.
Once you are on the ground of a different country, remain highly sensitive to native behavior. Never be completely surprised by anything; try to take it in stride, and don't feel offended if something seems offensive. After all, this is a global village, and we are all very different.

TONY Buzan’s grades were going down at university. Frustrated, he went to the library. He was directed to the medical section. Confused, he said to the woman librarian, “I don’t want to take my brain out.” Her reply was simple: “There’s no book on that.”
“I thought to myself,” says Buzan, “if I buy a little radio, I get an instruction manual. But for the most important machine in the world, no instruction manual?” In the late 1960s, he invented the mind map, a visual representation of thought processes.
“I think in most cases, people use less than 1 percent of their brains,” he says.
But how do you expand this 1 percent? According to Buzan, you take a section of whatever it is that you are trying to learn and you read it for its main parts. Then you make a mind map of all the crucial details. For a truly effective mind map, you start with a colored image in the center of your page and draw branches out

accordingly. He emphasizes that you should use plenty of images and colors as these help with memory recall and encourage creativity.
By using this visual form, your mind will begin to make associations that will help you remember more information for longer periods of time. Traditional note-taking methods, such as lists and summaries, do not stimulate the brain’s recall capacity in the same way. Because of this, students will often find themselves locked away in their rooms for hours, trying hard to memorize individual details. Buzan believes that for a more effective and lasting way of studying, you must first understand how brain works.
“Everyone is born smart,” he says. “You just have to learn how to learn.”

32. What is the writer’s purpose of the article?

WHEN it comes to tea breaks, nobody does it better than the British. And in the UK, no tea break is complete without a biscuit.
Every year the average British household eats 103 packets of biscuits, according to the market research firm Mintel.
“Biscuits are what we open when friends drop in for a quick cup of tea, or when dinner seems an incredibly long way off. And everybody has his or her favorite,” The Guardian noted.
In fact, England is divided when it comes to eating biscuits. Soggy biscuits are preferred by 65 percent in the North, according to the 2015 Waitrose Food and Drink Report. They happily put the biscuit in their tea and wait for the biscuit to go soft before eating it – risking part of the biscuit falling off and ending up in the mug (马克杯). But in the South, more than half of those on their tea and coffee breaks just put their biscuits in briefly.
The whole nation is divided about choices of biscuits, too. Custard creams (蛋
奶冻夹心饼干) are king in Yorkshire in the North of England, while chocolate digestives (消化饼干) rule in Lancashire in the Northwest, Oxford in the Southeast, and Cambridge in the East. Ginger nuts (姜汁饼干) are a longtime favorite in Northeast, traditional Rich Tea finished top in southwest England and Wales, malted (麦芽的) milk biscuits are enjoyed by people in central England, and shortbread (黄油酥饼) is a common choice in Scotland.
33. Which of the following statement is true?

书面表达:
Dear Sir,
I am Li Hua, a senior 3 student in your school. I’m writing to tell you about
a problem. Nowadays, a great many students stay in the classroom to study at noon.
According to me, it is very important to have a rest at noon, during which we can do something to get rid of tiredness. Otherwise students will feel exhausted both physically and mentally. So relaxation in that period is really beneficial.
As far as I’m concerned, there are methods to study effectively, the first of which is that we should combine our study with amusement. Meanwhile, doing some sports is also of great use. As an old saying goes, “All wo rk and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Only when we study scientifically can we study effectively.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua。
