Emilio Portaluppi was one Titanic passenger. He had a similar real-life love story to Jack Dawson in the movie Titanic, but unlike Jack, he didn't die. However, he refused to talk about that sad April night for years.
“Only in the last years of his life, when he returned to Italy, did he
tell tale of his Titanic journey to local reporters,” said Claudio Bossi, the
writer of Titanic. Portaluppi provided many versions of his survival story,
but exactly how he managed to escape the disaster remains a mystery.
Following the example of others and wearing a lifebelt, he jumped
into the ocean's cold water, swam to a huge cake of ice, and managed to keep afloat until he was seen and picked up by one of the lifeboats.
In another, more impossible version, he noticed that a boat was being lowered near him. As there were no women where he stood, he attempted to board, but lost his footing and fell into the ocean. He then swam in the icy water for two hours until he was pulled out by those in lifeboat 14, one of the last boats to leave the Titanic. With all the other survivors, he reached New York on April 18 aboard the Carpathia.
Immediately after he was saved, someone said that he had entered the lifeboat dressed as a woman. “Women and children first” was the order on the Titanic, and men who broke the order risked being shot. Emilio was first listed as “Mrs. Portaluppi” when the names of the saved were reported.
In his later interviews, Portaluppi again changed the story, adding that he drank half a bottle of wine before jumping into the ocean with a gun in his mouth. He swam in the cold water until Lady Astor in lifeboat 14 pleaded the sailors to pick him up.
After the disaster, he continued an adventurous life. Although he was an American, he joined the Italian army during World War Ⅰ. He returned to the US in 1919, but made several other journeys back and forth to Italy.
In 1965, at 84, Portaluppi made his final voyage to Italy. He remained in Italy until his death in 1974 at 93.

(山东高考)Elizabeth Freeman was born about 1742 to African American parents who were slaves. At the age of six months she was acquired, along with her sister, by John Ashley, a wealthy Massachusetts slaveholder. She became known as “Mumbet” or “Mum Bett”.
For nearly 30 years Mumbet served the Ashley family. One day, Ashley's wife tried to strike Mumbet's sister with a spade. Mumbet protected her sister and took the blow instead. Furious, she left the house and refused to come back. When the Ashleys tried to make her return, Mumbet consulted a lawyer, Theodore Sedgewick. With his help,Mumbet sued (起诉) for her freedom.
While serving the Ashleys, Mumbet had listened to many discussions of the new Massachusetts constitution. If the constitution said that all people were free and equal, then she thought it should apply to her. Eventually, Mumbet won her freedom —the first slave in Massachusetts to do so under the new constitution.
Strangely enough, after the trial, the Ashleys asked Mumbet to come back and work for them as a paid employee. She declined and instead went to work for Sedgewick. Mumbet died in 1829, but her legacy lived on in her many descendants (后裔). One of her great-grandchildren was W. E.
B. Du Bois, one of the founders of the NAACP, and an important writer and spokesperson for African American civil rights.

A quarter of parents worry they don't spend enough time with their children in the evenings, new research has shown, but psychologists have come up with a series of key questions they should ask when trying to reconnect with them after school.
After commuting, cooking dinner and doing household chores (日常事务), the average parent has just 30 minutes to devote to their children in the evening, according to a new study.
One in four working parents worry that half an hour simply isn't enough, while most half fret that they aren't a good enough parent during the week.
However, parenting experts believe just 12 minutes a day may be enough for mothers and fathers to fully reconnect with their children — as long as they ask the right questions.
Child psychologist Dr. Claire Halsey said asking a series of open-ended questions can help improve parents' relationships with their children.
Among the questions recommended in the research are: “How many times have you smiled today — what made you laugh?”“Can you act out what you did at break time?”“Who is taller —mummy or your teacher?”and “What are the names of the boys you played with today?”
Parents of older children are advised to start up a conversation with: “I've got a great story for you but I want one in return ... you first!” or “Tell me some school gossip ... I'm all ears!”
Dr. Halsey, working with the makers of Ribena Plus, who commissioned the research, said: “There is no one as tough on their own parenting skills as a parent — but this study shows there is no need for parents to be so harsh.”
“It's hard for working parents to juggle (尽力同时应付) all their responsibilities and it can feel like guilt is simply a parent's lot (命运) —but it's absolutely not.”
“By using clever tactics such as a little preparation alongside use of open-ended questions such as ‘Tell me what the best bit about your day was.’— parents can reduce the time worrying about chores and work and spend more time learning about their children's day.”
Some 42 per cent of parents worry they aren't good enough parents during the week and spend the equivalent of seven days a year (39 minutes per day) trying to emotionally reconnect with their children and get back into the family mindset when they return home from work and school.
51.The average working parents devote just 30 minutes in the evening daily to their children
mainly because ________.
A.they engage themselves in work and house chores
B.they think more time than that is unnecessary
C.their children are often busy with their lessons
D.they prefer to spare more time on weekends
52.According to parenting experts, working parents can get fully reconnected with their children simply by ________.
A.amusing the children with fun stories
B.asking some open-ended questions
C.staying with the children for a long time
D.praising the children's school performance
53.Most of the open-ended questions listed in the passage are________.
A.difficult to answer B.parent-centered
C.children-centered D.about homework
54.What conclusion can we draw from what Dr. Halsey said?
A.Working parents should spend more time developing their parenting skills.
B.Working parents should apologize for the limited time with their children.
C.Working parents should get to know about their children's daily needs.
D.Working parents should focus more on their children's day rather than chores and work.

After four years of high school, it has all come to an end. Walking down the stage to receive my diploma was dreamlike; I couldn't believe it was actually happening. But when I glanced into the crowd, I saw my dad and my mom crying, and I knew that this was the moment we had all been all waiting for. After all the late nights, all the homework and projects, I was finally done. I did it! I made it through high school.
Now I will begin a new journey. I'm so excited to be going to Williams in the fall, but I'm also nervous. This will be the first time I'll be away from home for a long period of time. I'll be starting a new life in new surroundings, with new people and new experiences. But I'll also have absolute freedom! My parents won't be breathing_down_my_neck all the time. I'll be able to do what I want when I want. Of course, with great power comes great responsibility. I'm going to have fun in college, but I'll also need to make sure all my work gets done. Organization will be the key! I'll buy an agenda so I can keep track of all my assignments and tests. I don't want to be one of those people who cram the night before, but I know it will probably happen at least once or twice — all-nighters are part of college life! It's going to be a balancing act. I'll find friends who want to study and then hang out afterward. I don't want to stress myself out too much, though; work doesn't always have to come before play.
All of my success over these last four years couldn't have been achieved without the help of some very important people. The application process, especially, is not easy, but with the right people in your corner, it can feel like a breeze. I was overwhelmed at times by all the work, but I had a great support system.
My Minds Matter mentors (导师), Courtney and Beth, were such a great help. They were a great team because they knew when to get serious and when to have fun, and that helped me keep balanced. I'm so thankful for Minds Matter because it allowed me to meet great people, attend amazing summer programs, and make it through my college applications in one piece.
My teachers and college advisors were there for me as well. My advisors helped me narrow down my school choices and believed in me even when I didn't believe in myself. They pushed me to work harder than ever and apply to top-rated schools. My English and history teachers took the time to thoughtfully write each recommendation letter that I asked for. Theirs were the classes I loved the most. I had the great pleasure to learn about the power of rhetoric (修辞) and about the foundations of our government from people who were truly passionate about their subjects. These are the kinds of teachers I hope to meet at Williams.
Last but never least, I thank my family. My parents are both immigrants, and their greatest dream is to see me graduate from high school and go to college. They want all opportunities and all doors open to me, and they know that education is the key. They have always told me to work hard in school and get good grades. And now I'm the first in my family to attend college, because my parents always encouraged me to dream big. At graduation, I couldn't help but cry when I saw my parents' faces. They have always been proud of me, and on that day their pride shined brighter than any star. My whole being was overflowing with joy because I had made them the proudest people ever.

Golden eagles are North America's largest bird of prey (食肉猛禽).They measure 76 to 101 centimeters in length and stand 66 to 83 centimeters.Their wingspan reaches 1.8 to 2.2 meters in length and they weigh 5 to 7 kilograms.
Golden eagles build their nests in trees, on cliffs or human structures
such as telephone poles. The nests are made out of branches and large
sticks and will usually contain fragrant leaves in order to keep insects and
other small pests away.A pair of golden eagles can maintain a territory as
large as 155 square kilometers which they will defend from other eagles to ensure that there is enough food for them. Some will migrate for food while others will not depend on the condition of their habitat.
Golden eagles hunt a variety of creatures such as rabbits, hares, other birds, snakes and carrion. They have even been known to attack fully grown deer.A pair sometimes hunt together to improve their chances of catching something. They fly around, scanning for prey along the ground and when they find something, they will dive at speeds of more than 241 kilometers per hour to catch it.
A pair of golden eagles will mate for life and often use the same nest year after year.Females lay anywhere from 1 to 4 eggs and both parents will incubate (孵化) the eggs. The females do most of the incubating while the male is the major food provider. After 34 to 45 days, the young ones come out of their eggs.If they can survive, they may live to be over 30 years old.
Golden eagles are protected by law as they were once hunted because they were thought to be harmful to livestock. They used to live in the eastern United States, but have disappeared for the most part and it is unsure why.Hopefully, an answer can be found so that the golden eagles will return to the east. After all, such a unique species of bird deserves to live and prosper.
61.What do we know about golden eagles from the passage?

D.They are native to North America and South Africa.
62.Why do the nests of golden eagles usually contain fragrant leaves?
A.Because they like the smell very much.
B.Because the leaves help protect the nest.
C.Because they feel comfortable by sitting on the leaves.
D.Because the leaves make the nest stronger.
63.In order to survive, some golden eagles ________.
A.may move to places where there is more food
B.must maintain a territory as large as 155 square kilometers
C.often fight with other golden eagles
