(本大题共10 小题,每小题1 分,共10 分)“Mr Mazzella, what is the difference between a period (句号) and a comma (逗号)?” I was a young substitute teacher (代课老师) in a middle school English class. The regular teacher had called in sick and left a lesson plan going over the rules of 15 . I hated these rules and hardly understood them myself, even though I was a writer. The English language is one of the most 16 subjects in the world. As I looked at the textbook, I knew that even if I told this student all the different 17 about commas, he wouldn’t remember them.
I was also in no mood for a long lesson. My mom had died just a few short weeks ago. I missed her so much. I wandered ( 徘徊) around feeling half 18 inside. All I wanted to do was to stay in
bed, but my young family was struggling to get by and I knew I had to take every day of work I could. I looked at the textbook again but couldn’t 19 it because my eyes were so watery. All at once, however, I remembered the rule of thumb (经验法则) I used whenever I was writing something.” A period is the end of a sentence or a thought.” I said. “a comma, on the other hand, is just a brief pause ( 暂停) before the sentence continues on.” When I finished saying this, my heart suddenly felt 20 . I smiled and thought of my mom continuing on in a place much brighter and happier than 21 I was in n ow.
That little moment of light helped me as I continued to miss my mom over the months and years to come. Recently, I remembered it once again when I saw this quote (引用) in a book I was reading: Death is not a(n) 22 , only a comma.”
Our lives are a sentence and a 23 that goes forever. Our 24 here is only a part of it. Our death here is only a comma. Write your story with love.

Tom Sawyer tried to cut the cupboard with the knife. Then it was th e time for him to dress up. However, Tom didn’t want to take the trouble to wash his face and hands. And Mary uncovered his secret and he had to use soap to wash his face again. The clean part was just like a mask on his face. Thanks to his own
cousin Mary, Tom had become a different person. Finally, he got into his shoes.
Then, they wen to Sunday School. Tom hated the school very much. When the children came to the school gate, Tom walked slower and asked another boy, “Bill, have you got a yellow ticket?” Soon after they reached a deal. Tom gave him a fishing hook and he got the yellow ticket. In the same way, he exchanged for some red tickets and some blue tickets.
In this school, the teacher had set a rule to encourage children to recite the Bible: if he could recite two verses, the teacher would give him one blue ticket; ten blue tickets were equal to one red ticket; ten red tickets could be exchanged for a yellow ticket; if anyone could get ten yellow tickets, the teacher would give him or her a new Bible. Getting the thick book was the greatest honor for children. So they were busy reciting every day. To Tom, it’s impossible, so he thought of a simple way. He exchanged his small things in other children’s hands. In this way, he got many cards.
At the beginning of the class, the 35-year-old teacher made a daily speech. Tom was playing with the boys around him. He pulled a boy’s hair and pinned another, but when they turned around, he just read the You never said “I’m leaving”
In life I loved you dearly
You never said “goodbye”
In death I love you still
You were gone before I knew it
In my heart you hold a place
And only God knew why That no one could ever fill There are no words to tell you It broke my heart to lose you Just what I feel inside The shock, the hurt, the anger Might gradually subside (平
息)
Thousands of times I’ll need you Things will never be the same Thousands of times I’ll And although it hurts so bad If love alone could have saved you You never would have died But you didn’t go alone
For part of me went with you
The day God took you home
Things will never be the same
And although it hurts so bad
I will smile whenever I hear your name
And take pride you were my dad.
book carefully, but the children began to talk noisily in the latter one third of the talk. Some children even began to fight.
Suddenly, the room turned silent because some visitors came into the room. Three adults and one young girl entered. To Tom’s surprise, the little girl was just the “angel”. Tom thought of his meeting with the girl and the adventure in her garden. Among the visitors, the old man was somebody and all the teachers, men and women, made up to him in many different ways.
Then it was the time to give prize to those chileren who had got ten yellow tickets. The room was quiet. Nobody had enough tickets. When hope was dead, Tom stood up with nine yellow tickets, nine red ones and ten blue ones. Then, children suddenly realized that they were cheated by Tom. The teacher didn’t believe Tom could get so many tickets, but the number of tickets was exact. The prize was given to Tom Sawyer and he was introduced to the old man.

A typical lion tamer (驯兽师) in people’s mind is an entertainer holding a whip and a chair. The whip gets all of the attention, but it’s mostly for show. In reality, it’s the chair that does the important work. When a lion tamer holds a chair in front of the lion’s face, the lion tries to focus on all four legs of the chair at the same time. With its focus divided, the lion becomes puzzled and is unsure about what to do next. When faced with so many options, the lion chooses to freeze and wait instead of attacking the man holding the chair.
How often do you find yourself in the same position as the lion? How often do you have something you want to achieve (e.g. lose weight., start a business, travel more)―only to end up
confused by all of the options in front of you and never make progress?
This upsets me to no end because while all the experts are busy debating about which option is best, the people who want to improve their lives are left confused by all of the conflicting (相矛盾的) information. The end result is that we feel like we can’t focus or that we’re focused on the wrong things, and so we take less action, make less progress, and stay the same when we could be improving.
It doesn’t have to be that way. Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face, remember this: All you need to do is to focus on one thing. You just need to get started. Starting before you feel ready is one of the habits of successful people. If you have somewhere you want to go, something you want to achieve, someone you want to become… take action at once. If you’re clear about where you want to go, the rest of the world will either help you get there or get out of the way. In what sense are people similar to
a lion facing a chair.
31.In what sense are people similar to a lion facing a chair?
A. They feel puzzled over choices.
B. They hold on to the wrong things.
C. They find it hard to make changes.
D. They have to do something for show.
32.What is the author’s attitude towards the experts mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. Tolerant
B. Doubtful
C. Respectful
D. Supportive
33.When the world is “waving a chair in your face”, you’re advised to .
A. wait for a better chance
B. break your old habits
C. make a quick decision
D. ask for clear guidance

Let us imagine how Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen’s most famous work, might be updated, 200 years ago. Austen’s popularity is rooted in her intelligence. But today she would certainly have had a very different life, as would her characters. Here’s my own suggestion.
It’s a truth finally and generally acknowledged that a single woman with brains should have equal opportunities to men, however disadvantaged she may feel sexism (性别歧视).
“My dear husband,” said his hopeful wife one day. “Have you heard that the local store, standing empty for so long, is taken over by a bright young businesswoman?”
Her dull and indifferent ( 漠不关心) husband replied that he ha d not. “but it is, it is,” she repli ed excitedly. Mr Dull—husband made no reply.
“Don’t you want to know her plans?” she cried with some impatience.
“Well, my dear, the rumor is that she had already set up a string of successful business in northern England, though how a woman can know anything about that is beyond me. She will move in herself next month.” “What is her name?” “Bingley.”
“Is she married or single?”
“What a question! And none of your business. But her coming will be a fine thing for our five boys.” “How so? How
can it possibly affect them?”
“My dear love, those lazy boys need something to wake them up. There are certain to be jobs going.”
“Is that her point in settling here? Surely as a woman she has simply taken a fancy to the place.”
“Nonsense, my love, how little you’ve noticed the world has changed. She’s got a first-rate degree and some sort of business qualification, I’m told. She surely needs one of our boys! Perhaps you might give her a call.”
“Me? No. Perhaps you can take an interest. You still have your looks, after all. She may even offer you a job.” “Oh, that’s not likely. These new chances belong to the younger generation. But now you mention it, I think I’ll go along all the same.”
And Mrs Bennet went wrong. That was 10 years ago. She is now managing director of a FTSE-listed company.
… It would remain the case, of course, that Mrs Bennet would be one of very few women on the
company board, that her salary would be lower than her male colleagues, her bonus of a more “female” dimens ion and h er lifespan among the city’s business leaders shorter than theirs. Still, she’d no doubt have enjoyed Davos—and might even have hobnobbed (巴结) with influential figures.

A.had mixed feelings of admiration and surprise about
Bingley
B.felt kind of worried and doubtful about Bingley
C.was quite anxious to meet Bingley
D.had a great curiosity about Bingley
36.In the eyes of Mrs Bennet, Bingley surely needed one of their boys to .
A. get married to
B. work for her
C. help her move in
D. take over her store
37.What does the writer try to tell us?

Beggars are often seen sitting by the side of a street with heads bowed as people pass by. Some ask people passing by for a small amount of money and some just sit and wait to be given money.
To solve the problem, another giving plan has been suggested. Ten blue money boxes will be placed in busy places such as the market and the railway station. It aims to encourage people not to give money directly to beggars but instead to give generously to local homeless people.
Supporters of this plan think it will be a useful way to solve the beggars’ alcohol and drug problems (酗酒和吸毒). But the police are against the plan arguing that beggars who do not receive cash may turn to criminality to feed their addictions. The homeless charity “Crisis” said the success of any plan will depend on its style. They think that imaginative and active plans can help create local understanding and sympathy ( 同情心) instead of hardness. Most of the beggars dislike the plan because they think they will not get enough money from the boxes for their showers, food and clothes.
Begging is a big social problem both in developing and developed countries. Government must play a big role in solving this problem. Training beggars to work and helping them to find fit jobs is one option. This is especially true for developing
countries where many low-skill jobs exist.
The general community should also be educated to see beggars not as dirty and dangerous, but as
