In the late 40's and early 50’s my grandparen ts began to plan and plant a wonderful terraced southern garden.
I mostly remember my grandmother Nanny caring for the garden. I would walk around with her as a kid as she cut or planted her flowers. She would give me seeds of this or that which I would take home and plant at our place. Soon by mid primary school I had my own vegetable and flower gardens. Like many boys of my age in the 60's I lived mostly for sports, but I always had my gardening as my first non-sports hobby.
Nanny had a gardener named Mr. Dove who came weekly. I would often follow him around and work with him. Finally he got too old to manage her hilly yard and
walkways, so I took over. I started mowing (修剪))garden grass at an early age. I can't say that I love mowing today-----I guess I did enough to cover a couple of lifetimes-----but it was a great way to make money.
When I graduated from 6th grade my parents gave me The Rockwell Complete Guide to Successful Gardening I read it with great interest, and as I learned more I tried more things out in our garden.
By the time I got to college I figured I would either become a vet (兽医) or save the world by becoming an environmental lawyer. In the 1980’s, I taught high school science for five years. Later with both my experience in gardening and my understanding of plants I found a nice job. It seemed that so many once wonderful gardens had become completely overgrown, and old plants were in great need to take out. It was a great job.
I was not taking up gardening work full-time, but it worked out that way. I am grateful for being outside almost every day, for the wonderful advantage of caring for so many wonderful gardens, for the opportunity to see so many wonderful creatures week in and week out as I work, and for the advantage of almost nonstop learning!

Major causes of record fires sweeping across the Amazon rainforest this month include the dry season and human activities, according to research institutions and media reports.
The rainforest is typically wet and humid, and the frequency of fire activity usually rises each year since July —the onset of the dry season, and peaks in September and decreases in October as the rainy season approaches.
However, data from the Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) showed that the number of forest fires in Brazil soared by 82 percent from January to August this year from a year ago, and over half of those fires occurred in the Amazon rainforest. A total of 71,497 forest fires were registered in the country in the first eight months of 2019 , up from 39,194 in the same period in 2018, the Inpe said.
Human activities have led to the recent increase of fires, some experts have noted. The view was echoed by many, though they were divided over who actually conducted the activities. On Friday evening, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro pledged “zero tolerance” of environmental crimes, adding that the Armed Forces troops and resources will be mobilized from Saturday to help put out the fires.
Earlier this week, Bolsonaro blamed non-governmental organizations for increasing wildfires in the Amazon rainforest in the country’s north. His claim was refuted (反驳) by environmentalists, who argued that the surge of fires was a result of increasing deforestation and burning fueled by the governments anti-environmental policy. Alberto Setzer, an Inpe researcher, told local news site G1 that all the fires are results of human activities some accidental while others intentional.
Scientists and environmental groups are worried that the fires will aggravate climate change crisis and threaten biodiversity. The emergency has now transcended (越过) Brazil’s borders , reaching Peruvian, Paraguayan and Bolivian regions. 28.What is the main idea of the text?
A.The text explains the major causes of the Amazon fires.
B.The text aims to arouse human’s awareness of protecting the Amazon.
C.The text is intended to call on people to help the Amazon.
D.The text is expected to warn other countries of the Amazon fires.
29.Which of the followings is not the main cause of the Amazon’s fires?
A.The dry weather. B.The intentional deforestation. C.The natural disasters. D.Some accidental human activities. 30.What can we infer from Paragraph Three?
A.Similar to that in 2018, the frequency of fire activity will peak in September in 2019. B.Compared with those in 2018, fires have happened more frequently in the first eight months in 2019.
C.There are more fires in 2019 than in 2018.
D.All of the big fires have happened in the Amazon rainforest.
31.What may Alberto Setzer agree with?
A.Non-governmental organizations are responsible for wild fires in the Amazon rainforest.
B.The Amazon rainforest fires may be due to human activities.
C.We should pledge “zero tolerance” of environmental crimes.
D.The fires will influence Brazil’s bordering countries.

Christmas Day was coming. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus. I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told me the truth, Grandma was home, and I told her everything. She was ready for me."No Santa Claus!” She shouted. “Ridiculous! Don’t believe it.” That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad.
“Now, put on your coat, and let's go.”
“Go where, Grandma?” I asked. “Where” turned out to be Kerby’s General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me te n dollars. “Take this money,” she said, “and buy something for someone who needs it I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's.
I was only eight years old. I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people. competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock’s grade-two class. Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat.
I knew that because he never went out for recess (休息) during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker d idn’t have a cough, and he didn’t have a coat. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.
“Is this a Christmas present for someone?” the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. " Yes,”
The nice lady smiled at me, put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.
