Website: The F117 Engine - Exclusive Power
As the one and only engine to power all of the United States Air Force’s C-17 Globemaster IIIs, the F117 engine enjoys an earned reputation for durability, reliability and safety. The Pratt and Whitney F117 engine is the military equivalent of the PW2000 commercial aircraft engine; customized and specialized for the rigors of the military mission. Whether operating out of short, semi-prepared runways in support of combat operations or on humanitarian missions, the F117 engine has accumulated over 3 million engine flight hours. Some days you fight terror. Some days you fight hunger. The F117 engine does both.
The F117 engine is always ready to go and the Pratt & Whitney Aftermarket Services Team is ready too. The Aftermarket team provides continual on-wing material and operational support, off-wing engine overhaul and repair, and all the necessary engineering support services.
The F117 engine powering the C-17 Globemaster III has set records and won awards. During qualification testing, the F117 powered C-17 set 22 world records. As a direct result of Pratt and Whitney’s historical and comprehensive understanding of the engine as the original manufacturer, the F117 engine program boasts an award-winning fleet management program, receiving Aviation Week’s Charles B. Ryan MRO Innovation Award for Innovative Business Solutions in 2002. The fleet management team meets the challenges of C-17 Globemaster III by providing a high quality integrated support solution which optimizes engine time on wing for our customer and provides a total systems approach to forecasting, maintenance and aftermarket support.
With its solid foundation for outstanding performance, today’s F117 engine has easily adapted to today’s military engine needs. The F117 engine uses technical and material advancements such as second-generation single-crystal turbine materials and improved cooling management and thermal barrier coatings to lower metal surface temperatures. Paired with higher operational performance, lower fuel burn and improved maintenance diagnostics, the F117 engine is a perfect complement to its commercial counterpart as the world’s leading midrange-thrust engine.
