第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)Depression and suicidal thoughts have doubled in young Americans, according to a new study from the American Psychological Association.
Likely triggers? Cell phones and social media.
“More US adolescents and young adults in the late 2010s, vs the mid-2000s, experienced serious psychological distress, major depression and more attempted suicide (自杀)”, says lead research er Jean Twenge, professor of psychology at San Diego State University. “These trends are weak or non-existent among adults 26 years and over, suggesting a generational shift in mood disorders instead of an overall increase across
all ages.”
Twenge believes this trend is partially due to the explosion of digital culture over the past decade, which may have twisted modes of social interaction enough to affect mood disorders.
The study analyzed data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, which tracked drug and alcohol use and mental health issues in more than 200,000 youths aged 12 to 3 from 2005 to 203 and almost 400,000 adults from 2008 to 203.
Major depression in the last 12 months increased by 52 percent in kids from 2005 to 203 and 63 percent in young adults aged 4 to 25 from 2009 to 203. There was also a 71 percent jump in young adults experiencing serious psychological distress in the previous 30 days from 2008 to 203.
So what’s so different now? Twenge says research shows young people just aren’t getting as much shuteye as they did in previous generations.
Whereas older Americans might have established more stability in their lives,
sleep-disrupting social stressors are likely at their peak for teens and young adults in this digital era, she says. Older adults are also less likely to let devices interfere (干预) with sleep.
These results suggest a need for more research to understand how digital communication versus face-to-face social interaction influences mood disorders and to
develop specialized interventions for younger age groups.
Her suggestion? Put your phone down at least an hour before bedtime.
1、How is Paragraph 6 developed?
A.By stating facts. B.By giving examples.
C.By providing statistics. D.By presenting theories.
2、What might Professor Twenge agree with?
A.Mood disorders show no difference across all ages.
B.Teens are less likely to let devices interfere with sleep.
C.Digital cultural explosion might cause depression in teens.
D.The past decade has seen a sharp decrease in teens mental disorders.
3、What do the underlined words “social stressors” in Para 8 mean?
A.Interaction modes. B.Mental health issues.
C.Drug and alcohol use. D.Cell phones and social media.
4、From which is the text probably taken?
A.A biology textbook. B.A science magazine.
C.A travel guidebook. D.A medical case.
22.(8分)An unconventional new initiative(首创)in Canada will soon allow doctors to prescribe art to their patients—by giving them free access to a local museum.Wandering through the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts(MMFA),these patients and their loved ones will be able to feast their eyes on the peaceful collections of art.
The initiative is the first of its kind in the world. And while you certainly can’t replace a conventional treatment with a couple of paintings, the idea is for
such“prescriptions”to assist a person’s current treatment plan.Under the new program, members of the Francophone Association of Doctors in Canada(MFDC)will be able to hand out up to 50 prescriptions for their patients.
These prescriptions will be available for those with a wide range of mental and physical illnesses, and each of them will allow two adults and two children to visit the museum for free.
“By offering free admission to a safe, welcoming place,a relaxing experience,a moment of relief, and an opportunity to strengthen ties with loved ones,MMFA—MFDC Museum Prescriptions contribute to the patient’s well-being and recovery,”explains a news conference from the MMFA.
It may look a lot like a marketing effort for the museum but there’s al so increasing evidence that the display of visual art, especially if it’s showing nature, can have positive effects on health outcomes.
In some ways, the benefits of looking at art appear a little similar to physical activity.A systematic review of clinical art therapy(疗法) found that visual art has significant and positive effects on depression, anxiety, mood, and self-esteem.Findings like these are slowly gaining attraction in the medical community, making artwork a higher priority(优先)in hospitals around the world.
In the US,nearly half of all health care institutions have reported including art in health care programming, such as art therapy and the placement of visual art in hospitals. With spaces dedicated(专用的)to art therapy and also a medical consultation room, the MMFA already provides services for people with mental health issues, eating disorders, and Alzheimer’s disease, just to name a few.
1、How will some Canadian doctors treat their patients?
A.Introducing fine arts to their patients.
B.Feasting them in a peaceful and welcoming place.
C.Keeping them company through the Montreal Museum.
D.Giving them a prescription to access a local museum for free.
2、MMFA thinks the new initiative in Canada can be_______.
A.a help with patients’recovery B.a chance to make friends
C.the best option for the treatment plan D.a substitute for conventional treatment 3、Why does the museum join in the program?
A.To make visual art known to the public. B.To promote the museum into market. C.To strengthen ties with doctors. D.To advance the science of medicine. 4、What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Fine arts will take the place of medicine.
B.Artists rarely suffer from some mental diseases.
C.More than 50 prescriptions are available for patients.
D.Art will be included in Canadian doctors’prescriptions.
23.(8分)Scientists have found living organisms trapped in crystals (晶体) that could be 50,000 years old.
The organisms were found in a hot, but beautiful cave system in Naica, Mexico.
These ancient life forms can be seen only with a microscope. Penelope Boston, who leads the Astrobiology Institute at NASA, the space agency of the United States, says the ancient microbes were able to live by eating minerals such as iron.
She spoke about the discovery recently at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. If the findings are confirmed, they will show how microbes can survive in extreme conditions. Forty different kinds of microbes and some viruses were found in the underground area. The genetic structures of these organisms are 10 percent different from those of their nearest relatives.
The caves in Naica are 800 kilometers deep. They were once used for mining lead. Before the miners began working in the caves, the area was separated from the surface and the outside world. Some of the caves are as big as the large religious centers built during Europe’s Middle Ages. There are crystals covering the walls. The caves are so hot that scientists must wear special clothing to keep cool. The clothing keeps the crystals safe from human germs (病菌) or other damage. Boston said the researchers could only work for about 20 minutes at a time before they had to go to a room that was 38 degrees Celsius to cool down.
NASA officials would not let Boston share her findings with scientific experts before last week’s announcement. So scientists could not say much about the findings. But Norine Noonan, a biologist with the University of South Florida, said she believed them. “Why are we surprised?” Noonan asked. “As a biologist, I would say life on earth is extremely tough and extremely colorful.”
Boston is also studying microbes commonly found inside caves in other countries, such as Ukraine and the United States. These microbes appear to be impossible to kill. Boston said they show how difficult life on earth can be.
1、The existence of the ancient microbes relies on .
A.surrounding insects B.eating minerals
C.diverse plants D.absorbing air
2、What can we infer about the caves in Naica from the passage?
A.The walls were built during Middle Ages.
B.The temperature in the caves is quite low.
C.The environment in the caves is difficult to adapt to.
D.The caves have been explored since they were formed.
3、What is the biologist Norine Noonan’s attitude towards the findings?
A.Neutral. B.Doubtful.
C.Positive. D.Indifferent.
4、What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Living organisms bring hope to scientific research.
B.Caves provide living environment for living organisms.
C.Microbes show great power to survive in terrible conditions.
D.Scientists discover 50,000-year-old “super life” in Mexico.
24.(8分)I am astonished at the way God knows when to send a special gift of encouragement at just the right time! It might be in a dream, a lost letter, a memory, or something found that we’d forgotten about.
My grandmother was from a town in Michigan. And summer after summer I enjoyed staying with my grandparents as a young child. I was from the city and loved the small town where they lived. People knew everyone, their children, their pets, their ancestors.
Grandma was always using her hands for something exciting... she would make sandwiches and we’d have tea parties, plant flowers and carefully tend them. She loved knitting sweaters as well as making beautiful quilts for her grandchildren. I remember the small thimble (顶针) she would place on her finger while doing her needlework.
A few years ago, when Grandma left this earth for her new residence in Heaven, I bid farewell to my loving grandmother. How quickly our lives can change! We had just had tea together a couple of months earlier, on her 91st birthday. I missed her very much, but I noticed it mostly on my birthdays, because there was no card from Grandma. She’d never forgotten my birthday!
On one particular birthday when I was feeling a little low, something happened made me feel as if she was sharing that special day with me. I was arranging some colorful pillows that she had made, and suddenly I felt something inside one pillow; it was small and hard. I moved the object to a seam(缝)that I carefully opened, and, to my delight, out came a tiny silver thimble!
How happy I was to find something that had been a part of her! Not realizing it had fallen off her finger, I pictured her sewing it into that little pillow that I just happened to fluff(抖松), to place on my bedspread(床罩)that day. I carefully laid the thimble
alongside the others I’d collected over the years. What a precious memory of a very special lady who, somehow, I knew, was laughing in delight at sewing her thimble into my pillow. I heated the kettle and made some tea, using my best china, as Grandma
a lways did, and then enjoyed my tea and Grandma’s thimble. What a wonderful birthday that was!
1、In the author’s memory, what would her grandmother do?
A.She would make sandwiches and hamburgers for her family.
B.She would wear a thimble for needlework every day.
C.She would make beautiful quilts for money.
D.She would look after the flowers in the garden.
2、What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The modern world’s fast-changing life.
B.The fact that the grandmother had passed away.
C.The author’s missing her grandmother.
D.The love the author got from her grandmother.
3、How did the author feel when she found the thimble?
A.Surprised and joyful. B.Delighted but regretful.
C.Guilty and sad. D.Joyful but lonely.
4、Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A.Grandma’s Thimble.
B.Grandma’s Life Story.
C.The Joy of Finding Something Lost.
D.The Importance of Putting Things Away.
25.(10分)Happy Birthday to Me (and My Mom)
Forty-three years ago my mother went into labour for the second time. It was either very late New Year’s Day or very early on the second da y of 1969 depending on how you looked at it but either way, it was a full week past her due date when my mom woke up knowing it was time to wake my dad up, get dressed, pack up the car and head to the hospital. Her regular doctor was on vacation and when they reached the hospital they planned to deliver in were told that the doctor was on his way to another hospital so they should head there, in a neighbouring city. Most surprising to me now is that she felt well enough to attend a New Year’s party the previous night and stayed long enough to toast in the new year!
My mom and her family had immigrated to the United States just twenty years earlier from El Salvador. And that was a lucky thing for me. Not only did my mom gain
access to a better education and career options here in the US for herself, each of her three daughters would also enjoy her access to quality maternity (孕产妇的) care. While the US is hardly the world leader in maternal health or birth outcomes, these days a woman faces a 1 in 2,100 risk of dying during her life and in El Salvador, it’s 1 in 350-6 times worse. In 1969, that difference was even greater.
However, I was pregnant with my second child in El Salvador six years ago when I realized how very different my life might have turned out if I’d lived there when I delivered my first child. I travelled down there with CARE, the humanitarian relief organization, whose efforts my mom had long supported, to see some of their principal programmes in action. Among them was one in particular that remains with me today. It was a water project where pregnant women, many of whom had walked miles to access this clean water, receive some basic care before or after childbirth. Here these women were, facing the exact same physical challenges as me but still carrying the full work load of the family and with little to no resources for information, care, transportation or comfort during or after their pregnancies.
By this time, I was all too aware of what a challenge childbirth could be. After delivering my daughter in 2003, I survived a hemorrhage (大出血), the leading childbirth-related complication that takes the lives of thousands of other mothers all over the world. One girl or woman dies every 90 seconds in pregnancy or childbirth from what is in most cases a preventable death. I was as shocked as you are when I discovered this fact but I was also grateful. Grateful because I had been in the care of a team of health workers when I needed them most.
I thought of my mother’s life. While she had been born in a good hospital in San Salvador in the 1930’s, at that time pregnancy-related deaths were common even in the US. My great grandmother also hemorrhaged, only after delivering her fifth child and she died. Her husband, my mom’s grandfather was a physician at the time. He would give up practising medicine forever when he couldn’t save her.
But it wasn’t only my mom and her family that I thought of as I considered my own fate and good fortune, it was all those women I’d spent the day with in the rural community I’d visited with CARE. We’d made a connection that day, we mothers, as women. These women did not have access to the simple interventions (介入) that could insure their survival and that’s what concerned me. It did more than concern me, it woke me up and begged this question, why should any one life be of different value than any other?
And so, I made the commitment right there and then to do all I could to improve maternal health and reduce the number of maternal deaths around the globe.
