Dear Friend,
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. My name is Lily, and I am a student from China. I am writing this letter to invite you to visit my beautiful city!
China is a fascinating country with a rich history and diverse culture. I would love to show you around and introduce you to the wonders of my city. From the ancient temples to the modern skyscrapers, there is so much to see and experience here.
One of the highlights of my city is the Great Wall of China. It is a magnificent structure that stretches across the countryside. We can climb the steps together and enjoy the breathtaking view from the top. I will tell you all about the history behind the Great Wall and the heroic stories of the ancient warriors who once protected our land.
Another place we must visit is the Forbidden City. It is a grand palace complex with beautiful gardens and intricate
architecture. We can imagine what life was like for the emperors and empresses who lived there long ago. We can even dress up in traditional Chinese costumes and take pictures to capture the memories.
If you are interested in nature, we can explore the picturesque West Lake. We can rent a boat and glide along the calm waters, surrounded by stunning landscapes. We can also visit the famous Giant Panda Research Base, where you can see these adorable creatures up close and learn about their conservation efforts.
During your visit, I will teach you some basic Chinese phrases so that you can communicate with the locals. It will be so much fun to learn together! We can also exchange stories about our cultures and traditions. I am eager to learn about your country too.
I am excited about the opportunity to show you my city and share the wonders of China with you. I promise you will have an unforgettable experience filled with adventures and new discoveries. Please let me know when you would like to visit, and I will make all the arrangements.
I am eagerly awaiting your arrival in China!
Best wishes,
Lily

Dear Jessica,
How are you? I miss you so much! We had such an amazing time together when you came to visit me in Beijing last summer. Remember when we went to the Forbidden City and tried all those delicious street foods? I can still taste the juicy jianbing wraps and sweet candied hawthorn berries. Mmm!
Speaking of Beijing, I have some really exciting news. My family is going to spend our winter break in Xi'an this year! Xi'an is one of the oldest cities in China with over 3,000 years of history. It used to be the capital during many ancient dynasties like the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang. Can you believe how old that is? The city is like a living museum with so many incredible historical sites and cultural treasures.
I really hope you and your family can come visit us in Xi'an. It would be so much fun to explore the city together! There's so much cool stuff to see and do. Let me tell you all about it...
First of all, we absolutely have to go see the Terracotta Warriors. They are these massive life-sized sculptures of an entire ancient army made entirely out of terracotta clay. There are thousands of different warrior statues, each with unique facial features and details. It's crazy that they were buried underground for over 2,000 years until farmers accidentally discovered them in 1974. The Terracotta Warriors were created to guard the tomb of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. I've seen pictures but I can't wait to see them up close!
Xi'an is also surrounded by one of the best preserved ancient city walls in China. The walls form a huge rectangle around the old city center and you can actually walk or even bike along the top! How cool is that? They are massive - about 40 feet tall and 40-50 feet wide at the base. The entire walls stretch for over 8 miles all the way around. I think it would be really fun to rent bikes and ride along the ancient walls, looking down at the city on one side and the lush green countryside on the other.
We also have to go see the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, which is this enormous ancient Buddhist pagoda made of brick. At night, they have these really pretty lights that make the pagoda glow with different colors. Doesn't that sound magical? They
have wonderful lively night markets surrounding the pagoda too where you can buy all kinds of arts, crafts, snacks, and souvenirs.
Another very iconic sight in Xi'an is the Bell Tower, right in the center of the city. It's this huge wooden tower that was first built way back in the 1300s. Can you imagine how many people have walked by that very tower over so many centuries? In the evening, there are drummers who put on shows by rhythmically drumming on these enormous wooden stumps. We'll have to check that out for sure!
Xi'an also has this amazing museum called the Shaanxi History Museum that covers the province's incredibly long history from prehistoric times to the present day. There are loads of ancient artifacts, pottery, bronzes, and treasures from various dynasties. I'm especially excited about the exhibits on the ancient Silk Road trade routes that connected China to the West. They have real remnants of buildings, frescoes, and goods that traveled all the way from Rome and Greece thousands of years ago!
While we're in Shaanxi Province, my parents also want to take a side trip to see the Huashan Mountain. It's one of China's five sacred Taoist mountains with these crazy, precipitous hiking trails on the sheer cliff faces. I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to
do much hiking there, but the views from the cable cars are supposed to be spectacular. We'll get to look out over a sea of jagged granite peaks clinging to the clouds. Apparently, on a clear day, you can see all the way to the former capital city of
Xi'an in the distance. I think it will be a nice little day trip from the main city.
Those are just some of the highlights, but there's still so much more to see and do in Xi'an. We'll get to wander through the small winding alleyways of the Muslim Quarter, explore ancient mansions and gardens, check out mind-blowing archeological sites, see amazing shows about the area's
multi-cultural history, and just soak in over 3,000 years of civilization.
It's going to be such an incredible trip, but it wouldn't be nearly as fun or meaningful without you there. Having my best friend along for the adventure would make it a hundred times better. Plus, your family would absolutely love Xi'an too! Your dad is really into history, so I know he'd go nuts over all the archaeology and ancient sites. And your mom would appreciate the beautiful architecture, like the city's mosques and pagodas blending Chinese and Islamic influences. As for your little brother, I'm sure we could keep him entertained with all the great street
food (churros!), night markets , drum shows, and fun outdoor activities.
Please please please say you'll come! My parents are totally cool with having your whole family stay with us. We have plenty of room in our apartment and at my grandparents' place nearby. We're going to be in Xi'an from January 15th to January 31st. It would mean the world to me if you could make it, even if just for part of that time.
Let me know as soon as you can if your family is interested! I'm counting down the days already. Traveling with your best friend and experiencing a place with such mind-blowing history and culture - what could be better?
I can't wait to hear from you!
Miss you!

Dear Sam,
How are you doing? I miss you so much! You've been my best friend ever since we met at summer camp three years ago. Even though we live in different countries, I think about you all
the time. I can't wait until we're old enough to travel and visit each other!
Speaking of visiting, I have to tell you about my hometown - Beijing, the capital of China. It's the most amazing city in the world and you simply have to come visit me here someday. Let me tell you all about it!
Beijing is a huge, bustling metropolis with over 21 million people. The streets are always crowded and there are tall skyscrapers towering overhead. But it's not just a modern city - Beijing has a rich history going back over 3,000 years! There are so many incredible historical sites right in the heart of the city.
One of the coolest places is the Forbidden City. It's this massive palace compound where the emperors of ancient China used to live with their families and advisors. You could spend days wandering around the Forbidden City exploring all the temples, gardens, courtyards, and living quarters. My favorite part is the Imperial Garden - it's absolutely beautiful with rock gardens, pavilions, and a small lake.
Another must-see is Tiananmen Square right next to the Forbidden City. It's one of the largest public squares in the world and the site of many important events in Chinese history. You can see the famous portrait of Mao Zedong hanging on the Gate
of Heavenly Peace overlooking the square. On the north end is the Memorial Hall which honors revolutionary Chinese heroes.
Just a short subway ride from downtown is the Summer Palace, the imperial garden retreat from the Qing Dynasty era.
It's built around Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill. You can spend hours hiking up the hill, exploring the temples, pavilions, gardens, and taking in the amazing views of the lake and palace grounds. There's even a huge marble boat in the middle of the lake! The Summer Palace shows the amazing skill of ancient Chinese architects, engineers, and gardeners.
Beijing is also a modern, global city with incredible museums, restaurants, nightlife, shopping and more. We could visit the National Museum of China which has an amazing collection of artifacts from ancient China. Or we could go to the Beijing Capital Museum to learn all about the city's history and culture. The 798 Art District has funky art galleries, studios, design shops and cafes.
For fun, I'd take you to Wangfujing Street, one of the busiest shopping areas. We could try wild snacks like fried scorpions and eat dinner at one of the famous Peking duck restaurants. Of course, we'd have to go to an acrobat show - the acrobats in Beijing are among the best in the world!
My favorite place in Beijing might be Jingshan Park. It's right across from the Forbidden City and has a huge hill with the most incredible views of the palaces, temples and towers all lit up at night. We could take a kite to the park and find the perfect spot on top of the hill to fly it together while we take in the breathtaking scenery of Beijing's ancient sites and modern skyline.
There's just SO much to see and do in Beijing. We'd need at least a month to really explore everything! But I know you'd love all the cool historical sites mixed with the modern shopping, dining and entertainment. Beijing has the best of both worlds - ancient China and cutting-edge contemporary culture.
I really hope you can come visit me in Beijing soon, Sam! We could stay up late every night eating snacks, flying kites, and sharing our dreams for all the adventures we'll have together. Having my best friend experience my hometown with me would mean everything. Let me know when you can come - I can't wait!

Shanghai is the most incredible place, and I can't wait to show you around. It's a bustling metropolis with towering skyscrapers, ancient temples, and everything in between. I know you'll love it here!
Let me tell you about some of the coolest things you can experience in Shanghai. First of all, the food here is out of this world! We have delicious dumplings, noodles, and so many other mouth-watering dishes. My favorite is xiaolongbao, which are steamed soup dumplings. You have to be careful when you eat
them because the soup inside is super hot, but they're so yummy!
Speaking of food, we should definitely visit the Bund, which is a famous waterfront area. There are tons of restaurants and street food vendors there, and you can try all sorts of local snacks. Plus, the view of the skyscrapers across the river is breathtaking, especially at night when they're all lit up.
If you're into history and culture, you'll love the Yu Garden. It's an ancient Chinese garden with beautiful pavilions, ponds, and rock formations. It's like stepping back in time! And right next to the Yu Garden is the City God Temple, which is a stunning example of traditional Chinese architecture.
For something more modern, we can go up to the top of the Shanghai Tower, which is one of the tallest buildings in the world.
