The summer of 2011 has been a great year for sea turtles along the coast of North and South Carolina. The Department of Natural Resources have reported 3,889 nests have been spotted in South Carolina alone, with thousands more in North Carolina.
My sister-in-law is a loggerhead (蠵龟) fan and spends many hours patrolling (巡视) the turtle nests. Many nights, she and her fellow volunteers spend time locating and protecting the nests. Her greatest joy is watching the baby turtles hatch and crawl (爬行) safely to the sea. On their journey, the babies face many obstacles in their path, such as hungry birds or holes dug in the sand. Lights from beach houses also disturb their trip to the sea. It is a known fact that the turtle babies are attracted to light and sometimes go the wrong way. My sister-in-law will actually stand in the shallow water, with a flashlight, to help the baby loggerheads crawl in the right direction.
Adult loggerheads can weigh as much as 400 pounds and have a shell up to 3.5 feet long. The adult female will trek (跋涉) from the ocean about 3 to 6 times per season and deposit her eggs in the sand. She picks a spot, usually near the dunes (沙丘) and digs a hole. Then she deposits 100 to 125 golf ball sized eggs in the sand. Finally she travels back to the ocean, as her job is done.
Besides helping the turtles hatch, the turtle patrols protect the nests with ropes and signs and there is a fine for disturbing sea turtles or their nests. The loggerhead is protected under the US Federal Endangered Species Act. The nesting season usually ends in mid-August, but due to an
increase in turtle activity, the season may last until early October. Experts don’t know why there have been more nests this year, but volunteers like to think it has to do with their dedication to the sea turtles.
36. After hatching, baby turtles are supposed to go to ______ at last.
A. the big sea
B. bright places
C. shallow waters
D. the dunes

B. goes ashore at least 12 times a year

D. To stop people from watching the crawling turtles.

Kristen Thompson smiled when chatting about how her parents sometimes look back to their school days by turning over the pages of the yearbook. The yearbook is filled with memories of the times that shaped many of our lives. But in some parts of the country, it has been thrown away, or is at risk of disappearance. “It’s the only thing from high school that you’ll probably have 20 years from now,” said Thompson, a staff member of the Tallmadge High School, who wasn’t pleased to learn that not many students are buying the school annual (年刊).
Some say it’s the e conomy; others say it’s because of the popularity of social networks such as Facebook. An d then there are the teens who simply don’t have loyalty (忠诚) to their school.
“I’m not getting a yearbook because they are just too expensive,” said Revere High School student Sammy Parks, 15. Many students think the same way, particularly underclassmen (新生).
But for many seniors in the Akron area, particularly those in suburban (郊区的) districts where switching schools is less frequent, having memories of their teenage years neatly bound (装订) together in a handsome package remains important.
Social-networking sites such as Facebook allow anyone to post photos and create albums. But those types of sites might be gone, or at the very least remarkably different, when today’s high school seniors are grandparents. “When I’m 50 years old, I’m not going to have a Facebook,” explained Natalie Walker, a Tallmadge High School senior. “And those sites aren’t picking up enough of what’s happening around us,” added classmate Mercedes Slider. With a yearbook,
students will not have above problems.
“I wouldn’t say the ye arbook is dying,” said Jim Barbour of Herff Jones, which produces yearbooks in the Akron area, “but I think we need to tell people why it’s alive.” 40. Winter 2012 w ill have an extended stay on America’s calendar, according to today’s annual
Groundhog Day (土拨鼠日) forecasting event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
Each year on February 2nd, people from around the world, including 5,000 in the small town, watch this tongue-twisting small town for a sign from one groundhog that supposedly predicts when that year’s spring will arrive: If it’s a cloudy day outside when the groundhog emerges from its burrow(洞穴), then spring will arrive early that year. However, if it is sunny outside, the groundhog will supposedly be scared by its own shadow, retreating underground for six more weeks of cold weather. The groundhog is called Punxsutawney Phil. He is considered to be the world’s most famous prognosticating (有预测能力的) animal.
Of course, Punxsutawn ey Phil’s p rediction is no more able to guarantee the extended forecast than your local weatherman. ABC News reports that an analysis by the National Climate Data Center found that Phil’s predictions are more often wrong than right.
The holiday began as a German tradition in the 18th century Pennsylvania and became even more of a cultural phenomenon after the 1993 film Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray. Each year, the lovely rodent(啮齿动物) is watched by millions as he emerges from a burrow in the town he is named after. Phil has become so beloved by the town that during the rest of the year, Phil lives in the town library with his “wife” Phyllis. A select group, called the Inner Circle, takes care of Phil year-round and also plans the annual ceremony.
48. If the groundhog goes back to its burrow on a sunny day, people will think .
