On a freezing cold February morning in Indiana, Jhaqueil Reagan,18, left home

jobs。

Three hours into his trip, Reagan had covered only three miles。

He paused
outside a restaurant called Papa Roux to ask for directions from the owner Art Brown, who was clearing ice and snow from the parking lot。

"I told him to get on the bus," says Brown. “He thanked me and went on his way."
Fifteen minutes later, Brown pulled up in his car beside Reagan as he walked along。

"You've really got to be on the bus," he told Reagan. "I don’t have money for the bus," Reagan replied。

Brown offered him a lift。

On the way, he asked the boy about his job searching. "I thought, this is the kind of kid I want working for me," says Brown. He got the Reagan’s phone number and dropped him off for his interview。

Later that day,Brown wrote about Reagan on Facebook. "It's been a while since I've met someone so young with a work ethic(道德)like that!” A few hours later, Brown called to offer Reagan a job. Shocked, the teen accepted on the spot。

Today, Reagan is washing dishes, filling orders, and greeting Papa Roux customers for $8.50 an hour。

A television reporter caught wind of the story and interviewed the pair on camera. The publicity has brought in so many new customers that Brown plans to open a second restaurant by the end of the year。

A new study shows that avoiding your neighbours may actually be bad for your heart。

It turns out that feeling socially connected to your community reduces the risk of a heart attack a lot。

While we may agree that having a safe and healthy neighbourhood would help people feel mentally healthy, it’s becoming more and more clear that emotional (情感的) happiness leads to physical health, particularly heart health。

Psychologists at the University of Michigan just completed new research that tested how socially connected people felt and how healthy they were。

health。

As the leading cause of death for both men and women in the US, heart disease can be caused by many factors like poor diet, lack of exercise and stress, and
this new research shows that, at least among the 5,276 study participants, those who felt the most socially connected with their community had a 67 percent reduced risk of heart attack。

Pretty amazing。

The study controlled for other known factors of heart disease risk like age and race, but here's the really interesting thing:they also controlled for what they called “dispositional(性情上的)factors” such as personality。

For example, optimism(乐观) was measured。

Lead researcher and psychologist Eric Kim said "We're finding things like that increased optimism are associated with reduced risk of heart failure and stroke。

" And the beauty of it is that how optimistic and connected you feel is up to you. There are no set standards in order to qualify for the health benefits because your own comfort and emotions are what guide your stress levels and health。

Even though there is always some conflicting information in the health area, it seems getting connected with your community is never a bad idea for your health.
31. What’s the theme of the passage?
A. The causes of heart disease。

B。

The way to build a friendly community.
C. Relation between community and your health. D。

How to deal with heart disease。

32。

The underlined sentences given in Para。

2 focus on the participants’_____. A。

personal character B。

experiences in life
C. living conditions
D. neighbourhood relations
33. According to the passage, what is the key factor concerning heart disease?
A. Quality of diet。

B. Stress level. C。

Age and race. D。

Social
connections and personality。

34. What can we infer from Eric Kim's words in Para. 4?
A。

One's personality may change with age。

B。

Being optimistic is good for your heart.
C. It's hard to measure optimism accurately. D。

Heart health and personality are not related。

35。

How did the researchers carry out this study?
A. By doing a survey. B。

By doing experiments.
C。

By having interviews. D. By referring to facts。

书面表达
One possible version:
Dear Mary,
How's everything going? I visited Rome a month ago, and really can't help sharing my pleasure with you。

Rome is the capital of Italy, and it has a long history of 2,500 years. It covers an area of about 1,500 square kilometres and has a population of about 3 million。

Located on seven hills, it is the largest city in Italy. Rome now has developed into Italy’s political, historical and cultural centre. I also learn that it is the birthplace of the world civilization。

In terms of its places of interest, Rome is world—famous. On the other hand, many of its mysteries will be uncovered little by little. And I’ll be eager to learn more about it.
I’m really looking forward to hearing from you。

Yours truly,
Li Hua
