Frank looked at us and said, ''My Dad was a fisherman. He was a big man, and he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the seas for his catch. When you got close to him, he smelled like the ocean. He would wear his old canvas, foul-weather coat and his bibbed overalls. No matter how much my Mother washed them, they would still smell of the sea and of fish.'' His voice dropped a bit. ''When the weather was bad he would drive me to school. He had an old truck which was older than he was. You could hear it coming for blocks. As he drove toward the school, I would shrink down into the seat hoping to disappear. Then he would lean over and give me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was so embarrassing for me. Here, I was twelve years old, and my Dad would lean over and kiss me goodbye!''
He paused and then went on, ''I remember the day I decided I was too old for a goodbye kiss. When we got to the school and came to a stop, he had his usual big smile. He started to lean toward me, but I put my hand up and said, 'No, Dad. I’m too old for a goodbye kiss. I'm too old for any kind of kiss.''

Frank got a funny look on his face, and the tears began to well up in his eyes, as he spoke. ''It wasn't long after that when my Dad went to sea and never came back. American teenager Thomas Cheatham had planned to study Latin during his sophomore year at Hebron High School in Texas. But when he learned that the school district was going to offer a Mandarin class, he quickly changed his mind.
''I thought it (Mandarin) would be more beneficial than Latin,'' said Cheatham, who is now in his second year of studying the language.
He speaks Mandarin to order food at Chinese restaurants and can read Face book posts from his Chinese-speaking friends.
While it's a difficult language to master, the high school junior, who plans to study computer engineering, thinks it will be a valuable thing in his career.
''Chinese is a good language to know, especially with China becoming a growing power,'' he said.
Many experts agree that proficiency in a language spoken by a billion people worldwide will give American students an edge in the global economy.
''People are looking at China as our next economic competitor, and interest in Mandarin is growing,'' said Marty Abbott, executive director of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. ''We're seeing it in all parts of the country.''
The number of students studying Mandarin in public schools nationwide in grades 7 through 12 grew from 20,000 in 2004-2005 to 60,000 three years later, according to the council's most recent survey.
Abbott estimates that as many as 100,000 students are now studying Mandarin, in public and private schools, throughout the nation.
She said the US government has considered Mandarin to be an ''important needs'' language and provides professional development programs for teachers.
''Our government wants to increase our language ability for national security and economic competitiveness, ''Abbott said.
At the same time, the Chinese government is spreading knowledge of the Chinese language and culture through Confucius Institutes established in many states.
The Confucius Institute at the University of Texas in Dallas, founded in 2007, opens
Confucius Classrooms at 11 local public and private schools where more than 700 students are learning Mandarin.
61. Why does the writer mention Thomas in the passage?
A. To tell us how changeable he is.
B. To introduce the topic of the passage.
C. To introduce his college life.
D. To tell us Latin is less popular now.
62. Many experts in America agree that _______.
A. Mandarin is becoming more beneficial than Latin
B. Mandarin is very difficult to learn for most American students
C. Mandarin will be of some help to American students in the global economy
D. China is a competitor of America in culture
63. Why does Mandarin become so popular in America?
A. Because Mandarin is more interesting than Latin.
B. Because there are many good teachers in the Confucius Institutes.
C. Because Mandarin is very helpful in the global economy.
D. Because the Chinese government has tried his best.
64. From the passage we know that the Confucius Institutes _______.
A. have trained 100,000 students to learn Mandarin in America
B. provide professional development programs for teachers
C. have been established in many states in America
D. were founded in 2007
65. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. An increasing number of students in America are learning Mandarin.
B. Confucius Institutes have been established in many states in America.
C. Latin is less popular in America now.
D. China now is becoming a growing power.
C
Nuclear power's danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be summed up in one word: radiation.
Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it cannot be detected by human senses. It can't be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we can't detect them, sense them, without a radio receiver. Similarly, we can't sense radioactivity without a radiation detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things.
At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being immediately by killing masses of cells in vital organs. But even the lowest levels can do serious damage. There is no levels of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be serious. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed immediately. Your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They can grow into cancer.
Sometimes this does not show up for many years.
This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without the victim being aware at the time that damage has occurred. A person can be irradiated(辐射)and feel fine, then die for cancer five, ten, or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be born weak as a result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents.
Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth.
66. What is the most dangerous factor of nuclear power?
A. Radiation
B. Quantity
C. Amount
D. Place
67. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Nuclear radiation can do harm to human beings.
B. Nuclear radiation cannot do harm to human beings.
C. Nuclear radiation can be detected by human senses.
D. Nuclear radiation is just like common radio waves.
68. How can nuclear radiation kill an animal?
A. By damaging its heart.
B. By killing a few cells.
C. By killing many cells in important organs.
D. By hitting any place in its body.
69. Why does nuclear radiation have a certain mystery?
A. Because human beings learn its harmfulness.
B. Because it can do harm to a person while the victim isn't aware the damage has occurred.
C. Because nuclear radiation can kill a person very easily.
D. Because human beings have no effective machine in order to detect nuclear radiation.
70. If a human being is hit by nuclear radiation, he may _______.
A. die of cancer after many years
B. die immediately
C. have a child who may be born weak
D. all of the above
D
Nearly everyone agrees that money doesn't buy as much as it used to, no matter when you want to spend it. This is certainly true of the paper money that passes so quickly through one's hands. But what about coins that seem to do very little except stay in purses and pockets? Unlike notes, metal money becomes more valuable the longer it is held, especially if it is put away where it won't get scratched (破坏) or worn. Why is this? One reason is that coins, being more durable (持久的), fall more readily into a category for collectors. Naturally, the rarer gold pieces must become more valuable as the price of this metal goes up.
But, curiously, one of the rarest coins in the world is not made of gold, but of the relatively cheaper silver. In 1840, the United States mint (造币厂) struck 19570 silver dollars. That is what its records show. Today only six of this original number remain and these are unlikely ever to reach the auction (拍卖) market. So what happened to some 19564 large silver coins, not the easiest sort of things to lose? One of the more romantic theories is that they were part of the payment to Napoleon for the American land then known as Louisiana. But they never reached
France. Somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico, the ship transporting them was sunk, either by a storm or by pirates (海盗). The probable answer to the mystery is that they were melted down — since the silver value was greater than the actual value of the coin. What really happened to the rest will probably always remain a mystery. What is known is that whoever can come up with one will find himself instantly rich.
71. We can learn from the passage that _______.
A. money buys as much as it did before
B. money does not buy as much as it did before
C. paper money buys more than metal money
D. metal money buys more than paper money
72. Which of the following is true of a coin?
A. The longer it is held, the less valuable it becomes.
B. The more it wears out, the more valuable it becomes.
C. The less it gets scratched, the less it values.
D. The longer it lasts, the more it values.
73. According to this passage, one of the rarest coins in the world is made of _______.
A. silver
B. gold
C. copper
D. paper
74. Coins become more valuable because _______.
A. they stay in purses and pockets
B. the price of metal goes up
C. they fall more readily into a category for collectors due to their duration
D. Both B and C
75. What really happened to some 19564 large silver coins?

Introductory Chemistry was taught at Duke University for many years by professor Bonk. One year, two guys took the class and did pretty well on all the quizzes and mid-terms. These two friends were so confident in going into the final that the weekend before finals week, despite the Chemistry final being on Monday, they decided to go to the University of Virginia to party with some friends.
They had a great time there. However, with their hangovers(宿醉)and tiredness, they overslept all day Sunday and didn’t make it back to Duke until early Monday morning. Rather than taking the final then, they found professor Bonk after the final and explained to him________________________. They told him they went up to the University of Virginia for the
weekend and had planned to come back in time to study, but they had a flat tire on the way back and didn’t have a spare. So they were late getting back.
Bonk thought this over and agreed that they could take the final the following day. The two guys, happy and relieved, studied that night and went in the next day at the time that Bonk had told them. He placed them in separate rooms and handed each of them a test booklet. He told them to begin.
They looked at the first problem which was something simple about solution(溶解). It was worth 5 points. ''Cool,'' they thought, ''this is going to be an easy final''. They then turned the page. They were unprepared, however, for what they saw on it. The question contained only two words: (95 points)Which tire?

W: Did you see the basketball game on TV last Saturday? The last 5 minutes were exciting. M: I know, I heard. But there was a blackout in my area and I missed the second half of the game.

M: Do you realize it’s Nov ember already? Before you know it, Thanksgiving will be here. W: Gee, you’re right. Do you feel like inviting your sister and her family over?
M: Sure. After all, they had us over last year.
W: Good. That’s settled. Why don’t you give them a call and see i f they can come?
M: Sure. Say, Cindy, can you help me with the shopping? We need to get a turkey.
W: Right. Let’s get a nice and big one. Do you need ingredients for the stuffing?
M: Oh, yeah. Thanks for reminding me. This is going to be fun. With Dan coming home from college, it’ll be a real family reunion.

M: Hi, I’m a TV reporter. We are just making a survey on fashion. Can I ask you a few questions?
W: Sure.
M: Thanks. Uh... First, what’s your name?
W: My name’s Linda.
M: Uh ha, and what do you do?
W: I’m a singer.
M: Wow, interesting. And where do you live?
W: I live in Melbourne, that’s in Australia.
M: Oh, that’s great. Where did you buy the clothes you’re wearing today? And how much did you spend, if you don’t mind my asking?
W: Let’s see, my clothes... OK. This blouse came from a big store near the supermarket, and it was fifty-five dollars. This hat came from a small store in Melbourne and cost a hundred and twenty dollars. Kind of expensive, but I think it’s great.
M: Yeah, thanks, Linda!
W: You’re welcome.

W: So, what kind of videos do you prefer to watch? Have a look at this list.
M: Well, I love anything that makes me laugh. I just love to hear jokes and funny things.
W: Yeah? Many people of your age like Westerns.
M: I am not keen on Westerns, although my father likes them. I am a real softie(多愁善感的人), so anything with a bit of love story is good for me. It doesn’t matter how old. Not musicals though, they’re too much!
W: Anything else?
M: I’m also interested in documentaries of the great outdoors, you know the sort, animals, plants and faraway places.
W: Pick anything you like in this shelf then.
M: I would like to take these 5 videos. I think I’ve got enough for this week.
W: OK. The rent is 2 dollars for each video. Do you have a membership card?
M: Yes.
W: So you can get twenty percent off.
M: Thank you. Bye.
W: Bye.

W: Surely having a granny about the place to give a hand with the housework can take a lot of pressure off a young wife, can’t it?
M: Yes, I think that is true. But remember old people themselves are often against the idea of going to live with a young family. You see, modern houses and flats are very small, much smaller than the sort of homes people used to live in.
W: And when granny gets very old, then, the situation becomes even worse, doesn’t it?
M: Yes. As long as old people are able to look after themselves, the system works quite well.
But as soon as they need any care and attention, the situation becomes very difficult indeed.
It’s likely that old people may go into a nursing home, but it’s not as simple as that.
Because of improvements in medical science, people live longer than ever before. The birth rate has fallen. This means that a smaller working population is providing for a larger number of old people, in need of care and attention. The number of old people’s homes provided by the State is strictly limited. There are private nursing homes, but the cost is out of reach of the average family.
W: And how do you see the situation developing in the future?
M: Well, obviously a lot of money is going to have to be spe nt. But it’s difficult persuading people to do this. There aren’t many votes for politicians in providing nursing homes for the elderly.

This is the BBC in London. Here is the news at ten.
South Korea has the most effective education system of the world’s richest countries, with Japan in the second place and the United States and Germany near the bottom, a United Nations study said Tuesday. The ranking provides a comparison of the developed world.
The study is based not on how many students reach what level of education, but on testing what pupils actually know and what they are able to do, including their abilities in reading, math and science.
Germany, with its strong educational tradition, occupies the 19th place out of 24 nations, just behind the United States in 18th place.
An American government official said, “Our schools are simply not good enough and they don’t compare well with systems in other countries.”
“It is clear that educational disadvantage is born not at school but in the home,” said the report. “Learning begins at birth and is encouraged by a loving, stimulating environment.”。
