新研究表明,为了解决偷猎问题而切掉黑犀牛的角会影响黑犀牛的领地面积和它们之间的社交。

而对于这种措施是否有利于动物保护,产生了不同的看法。

13. New research shows that removing black rhinos’ horns (犀牛角) to make them less attractive to illegal hunters is reducing their territory (领
地) sizes and making them less sociable with each other.
The study, published in the journal PNAS, found that dehorned South African rhinos have home ranges that are 45 per cent smaller than those of complete animals, and that they were 37 percent less likely to engage in social interactions.
“The big, dominant bulls that used to have very large territories that overlapped with a lot of females may now have much less territory and much less reproductive (繁殖的) success,” says Vanessa Duthé, who led the work at Switzerland’s University of Neuchâtel.
“It’s really hard to predict the effects of this,” she says. “It doesn’t mean that population success will necessarily decline, because it might open up gaps for younger males that would not have had the space or the means before.” Indeed, a University of Bristol study published last year showed that deh orning (去角) does not negatively affect populations overall.
But such unintended behavioral consequences necessarily feed into judgments about whether this highly invasive procedure is worthwhile.
Remarkably, perhaps, there is little hard evidence either way. “No one’s put all the data together to say whether it’s a really effective measure,” says Duthé.
“What is clear is that the introduction of dehorning and a decline in illegal hunting has occurred at the same time,” she adds. “But dehorning has been accompanied by other conservation measures that may be more effective.”
“It’s incredibly complicated,” says Lucy Chimes, a member of the Bristol team. “There are so many other factors involved. Y ou have to consider what other security measures are being carried out — fencing, patrols, staff numbers — and poverty levels surrounding parks, their nearness to national borders and whether there is community engagement.” Chimes is currently planning a project that aims to separate these and other factors. In the meantime, Duthé believes that dehorning is a worthwhile tool of last course of action. “A rhino that is behaving a little bit strangely is better than a dead rhino.”
1. What is the purpose of removing the horns of black rhinos?
A.To make them less sociable.B.To protect them from being hunted.
C.To reduce their home ranges.D.To affect their reproductive success.
2. What does the underlined phrase “invasive procedure” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A.The removal of rhino horns.B.The loss of rhino territories.
C.The impact on rhino population.D.The change of rhino behavior.
3. What is Chimes’ attitude toward the deh orning of black rhinos?
A.Supportive.B.Opposed.C.Unconcerned.D.Uncertain.
4. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Deh orning rhinos shows satisfying effects.
B.Various factors lead to the decline in illegal hunting.
C.Deh orning is the last action researchers will take.
D.Rhinos are supposed to behave a little bit strangely.

15. The employees at Helwig Carbon Products in Milwaukee have their own company cafeteria on a site, a rarity it seems more and more these days. But if anyone wants to eat a doughnut (甜甜圈), it’s going to cost twice as much as what they might pay for the sweet at the local grocery store. That’s because Helwig Carbon Products has a wellness program, and it is one of many local companies trying to show employees how to eat healthier.
“We’re really trying to persuade people to eat healthier,” said Cheryl Brah, human resources director at Helwig Carbon Products. “A piece of fruit is 25 cents; a doughnut is $1.50 — and we still have people who buy doughnuts. People complain — but we really try to put our efforts toward the
middle-of-the-line people who might lean more toward the wellness side, eventually.”
This effort isn’t just happening at Helwig Carbon. There has been a city-wide movement of 44 local companies who added or evolved their health and wellness programs to their company culture, and because of it Milwaukee is now nationally recognized for a large number of businesses with wellness programs.
It all started several years ago, when a program called Well City Milwaukee teamed up with 44 local businesses that collectively represent a workforce of 130,000 employees. Well City Milwaukee provided healthy practices guidelines for businesses. In exchange, it surveyed the employees to find out what their health needs and risks were and what activities they found interesting. Well City then set a very high bar for companies to meet a lot of expectations to be considered a top wellness program.
Companies needed a commitment from the CEO; to form a wellness team; to collect information from the employees in surveys and health assessments; to come up with an operating plan; to create a supportive environment; to self-evaluate their efforts; and finally, to choose their best approaches. That meant coming up with activities, better nutrition education, and motivational programs like getting people to quit smoking, getting people in for medical self-care and working on stress management.
1. What does the passage mainly want to tell us?
A.Company cafeterias are rarer and rarer these days.
B.A healthy diet is especially important to people’s health.
C.Company culture is gaining priority in a company’s development.
D.Companies are trying to help their employees think about their health.
2. The company cafeteria charges much more for doughnuts in order to ________.
A.drive employees to the local grocery store
B.show the rich ingredients of the doughnuts
C.profit more from the wellness program
D.discourage the purchase of unhealthy food
3. “T he middle-of-the-line people” in Paragraph 2 refer to those who ________.
A.are neutral about what to eat
B.are used to cutting in line when buying food
C.are addicted to sweet food
D.are middle-aged and have health problems
4. According to Well City Milwaukee’s requirements, a top wellness program of a company should ________.
A.motivate its employees to cooperate with each other
B.diagnose and treat its employees’ diseases effectively
C.initiate related activities based on their employees’ needs
D.prohibit its CEO from putting any pressure on its employees

文章主要介绍了日本新公厕的建设理念和特点以及其智能化、人性化的设计等信息。

16. Public toilets around the globe have a reputation for being dark, dirty and dangerous. Tokyo recently unveiled new restrooms in two public parks that aim to address those concerns. For one thing, they are brightly lit and colorful. For another, they are transparent. This way, those who need to go can check out the cleanliness and safety of the toilets without having to walk inside or touch a thing.
Japan has long experimented with toilets, resulting in lids that open, and close automatically and seats that warm up. But the new toilets—designed by Shigeru Ban, the Pritzker Prize-winning architect—are made out of a “smart glass.”
The toilets were installed in Tokyo in September. Set up in front of a cluster of trees in the Shibuya District, the toilets stand out like a Mondrian painting.
When occupied and locked properly, the colored glass toilets become frosted (磨砂的) and opaque (not transparent). When the door is unlocked, an electric current rearranges the crystals in the glass to allow more light to pass through, creating a transparent effect. The toilets were presented as another futuristic and aesthetically (美学地) pleasing example of the country’s technological advancements.
The predecessor to Tokyo’s transparent toilets appeared in Switzerland in 2002, when designer Olivier Rambert unveiled two glass restrooms in the city of Lausanne. They had a safety feature that automatically opened the doors and turned the glass transparent if sensors detected no motion for 10 minutes. That could possibly help users who fall unconscious and need medical attention.
1. What’s the purpose of the design of new restrooms?
A.To make the parks tourist attractions.
B.To settle the problems with public toilets.
C.To maintain the standards of public toilets.
D.To achieve a breakthrough in toilet construction.
2. How does the “smart glass” function?
A.By cutting off electricity.B.By giving off colorful light.
C.By sensing the health of people.D.By changing the order of crystals.
3. What can we learn about the transparent toilets?
A.They cause the concerns about privacy.
B.They are decorated with artists’ paintings.
C.They are pioneered by Japanese architects.
D.They combine technological and artistic elements.
4. Which can best describe the safety feature of glass restrooms in Switzerland?
A.Conventional.B.Humanized.
C.Simplified.D.Recreational.
