The sun was slipping down through the trees and it was time to go home. Time was running out. His mother would look at him and she would know. She always knew. A hot tear ran down his cheek. She trusted him. This was the first year she had left him alone for three hours between school and the time she got home from work. She had to work to buy his clothes and to pay for their food and for a place to live. Something I enjoy doing most in my leisure time is going to the cinema to watch a great film. It's two hours of relaxation and escapism from real life. But when I kick back in my seat to enjoy the film and tuck into (大口吃) my box of popcorn, I'm often irritated by seeing someone next to me texting on their mobile phone or worse still, talking to someone.
It's no surprise that a proposal by a US cinema chain to let people use their phones during some film screenings was met with such anger, that the company had to withdraw the idea. People said it was 'the worst idea ever'! Surely, going to watch the latest film is just that –watching not multi-screening. And if you're out with a friend it seems very antisocial or just rude. I certainly get distracted(分心的) by the click-click on someone's mobile keyboard as they text and the glow of the bright small phone screen – why aren't they concentrating on the big screen?!
But with the availability of streaming films at home and cheap DVDs, cinemas are struggling to keep their customers. Some places now offer comfortable seats with free snacks and drinks so maybe trying to attract a younger audience by allowing the use of mobile phones is the way forward?
A survey in 2020 found that a majority of 18-to-34-year-olds believed using social media while watching a movie would add to their experience.
However, not every young person wants to multi-task at the movies. Many of us still get annoyed by the theatre staff who appear not to do anything about it. Of course, we could ask the offenders to turn their phones off but
as Adam Aron, head of AMC Entertainment, said in Variety magazine, “when you tell a 22-year-old to turn off the phone, don't ruin the movie, they hear ‘please cut off your left arm above the elbow’.” Clearly this is not what I would like to see but if you want to use your mobile phone in the cinema that I’m at, please don’t sit next to me! Following the crowd may not always be in a person's best interest. But new research suggests that teens who go along with their friends may end up healthier as adults.
Scientists have known that close friendships help boost health. That’s
true for both teens and adults. The finding inspired Joseph Allen, a psychologist at the University of Virginia, and his team to study whether experiences during teen years would influence adult health.
So they followed 171 teens, starting when the kids were just 13. They interviewed each one every year for five years, and also spoke to these teens’ closest friends, who provided additional information about the quality of their friendships. The same 171 people were interviewed again at ages 25, 26 and 27. This time, the questions surveyed each person’s overall health. When the researchers analyzed the data they found a strong connection between a teen’s behavior and adult health. Teens who had close friends grew up to be the healthier adults. Whether teens held back their feelings or expressed them to a close friends also influenced later health. Those who held back were more likely to be sick as adults. The connection held up even after the scientists accounted for other possible influences on health. Weight, family income and drug use were all examined. So were mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. And in these people, such other factors did not explain adult health as well as teen friendships did.
Going along with the crowd may have benefits, says Allen, but there are also drawbacks. Teens who are more independent tend to do better at school and work. And peer pressure may lead some kids to engage in risky behavior, such as smoking, drinking or using drugs. Dealing with it is an ongoing challenge, Allen acknowledges. “Finding the right b alance is the key. Teens shouldn’t lose heart for not finding this easy.” And, he adds, “Parents need to be understanding about the pressures teens face.”
