Hi, my name is Jamie and I'm going to tell you about this really cool book I read called The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. It's about this old fisherman named Santiago who lives in Cuba and he goes out fishing alone in his little boat every day, but he hasn't caught any fish for like 84 days! That's a really long time.
All the other fishermen started feeling bad for him and making fun of him behind his back because he couldn't catch anything. But Santiago didn't let it get him down. He still went out every morning before sunrise to try his luck at catching fish. His friend, a young boy named Manolin, used to go fishing with him but after 40 days of not catching anything, Manolin's parents made him start going out on a more successful boat instead.
On the 85th day, Santiago sailed out alone like usual. He went out really far into the Gulf Stream where the biggest fish
swim. He put his lines out and finally got a bite from what must have been a massive fish because it took all of his strength just to hold onto the line. Santiago knew it was going to be an epic battle to try and catch this monster fish.
For two whole days and nights, Santiago struggled with all his might to pull the fish in towards his skiff. He didn't have any food or water and his hands were getting cut up really bad from the fishing line. At one point, the fish pulled so hard that Santiago was actually dragged out of his boat! But he never gave up and finally, after an intense tug-of-war, he killed the huge fish.
It was an incredibly big marlin, longer than his boat even! Santiago had to lash it to the side of his skiff to head back to shore. On the way home, he got attacked by hungry sharks who were attracted by the marlin's blood in the water. Santiago fought them off with anything he could, including a harpoon and his blade, but the sharks took bite after bite of his prized catch until there was nothing left by the time he reached the shore except for the marlin's skeletal remains.
When the old man finally made it back to the village, everyone was stunned to see him hauling in just the bare bones of the epic fish he had battled. Santiago was heartbroken that he had nothing to show for his struggle except his shredded hands
and clothes. But Manolin was just amazed by his friend's bravery and perseverance. He vowed to start sailing with the old man again.
To me, the message of the story is that you can't ever give up, even when the odds seem completely against you. Santiago could have quit at any point but he had too much grit and determination. Even though his prize was destroyed by the sharks in the end, he still won by never surrendering. The old man displayed true strength, not just physical, but mental and spiritual too. That's what made him a hero, at least to me. Heck, I want to be as tough as him when I grow up!

"The Old Man and the Sea" is a really cool book by Ernest Hemingway. It's about this old Cuban fisherman named Santiago
who hasn't caught any fish for 84 days straight! That's like almost 3 months of zero fish. The poor guy was super unlucky.
But Santiago doesn't give up. He's determined to break his bad luck streak. So he sails out alone in his little fishing skiff way out into the Gulf Stream off the coast of Cuba. And that's when the really intense part happens!
Santiago hooks this massive marlin - we're talking a fish that's longer than his boat! Can you imagine fighting a creature that huge all by yourself in the middle of the ocean? I'd be terrified. But not Santiago. He's as tough as nails.
For two whole days and nights, Santiago fights the marlin. He doesn't sleep, he barely eats or drinks. It's just him against this gigantic, powerful fish. Santiago gets cuts all over his hands from the fishing line. His face gets burned by the hot sun. Sharks start circling his boat, smelling the marlin's blood. It's insane!
