When was the last time you read a book cover to cover? With our lives focused on feeds, tweets, and full inboxes, taking time to read and digest a book can easily become a forgotten treat. It shouldn’t be! See what the bookworms at Chatfuel have been reading lately to help you see what to read next.
Educated by Tara Westover
This is Tara’s autobiography, a story about growing up in an American Mormon family, eventually breaking the boundaries of beliefs and imposed (强加的) opinions. It’s about the importance of education, healthy family relationships, and personal freedoms. Her own story illustrates that an upsetting family past won’t stop a young woman from finding herself and fighting for her rights. It’s great for anyone who is experiencing tension in the workplace or in their family.
The New One Minute Manager by Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson
The book centers around any business’s most valuable property: its people. It provides hands-on, practical advice on how to empower your team and get the most out of their potential and also covers techniques for a more effective management style. Always remember that you’re working with other human beings who have feelings.
My Name Is Red by Orhan Pamuk
The story is set in 1591 Istanbul. And although it’s a murder mystery detective story at heart, it has plenty of other plot twists and turns with conflicts, medieval history, love, and confrontations between cultures and civilizations. It’s a good choice for readers who are curious about the history of the Ottoman Empire.
Pink and Say by Patricia Pollaco
The heart-breaking true story of Civil War warriors in which a 15-year-old Yankee soldier, Say, alone and bleeding, is dragged to safety by a fellow Union soldier. They are ultimately captured and separated, and Say survives to pass the story down through the author’s family.

We were a good 90 minutes into the hike and now were on the backside of Stump Pond at Blydenburgh County
Park in Smithtown. Typically, when hikers reach the backside — of a lake or a mountain or whatever — they experience a measure of relative peace. But this was last August, in the midst of the pandemic of COVID-19, and on that backside in Blydenburgh we crossed paths with a group of hikers coming in the other direction, and then a family of four hanging out just off the trail by the water’s edge, and then a solo hiker, and then a group of boys rushing around on bicycles.
There was a lot of that going around in the year of the coronavirus. Over the past year, we sought out our parks like never before. Long Island’s state parks had more than 32 million visitors in 2020, a 5 million-plus jump from 2019, with big increases posted in flagships like Jones Beach, Robert Moses and Sunken Meadow as well as lesser-known places like Napeague, Trailview and Hallock State Park Preserve. The same phenomenon seemed to occur at county, town and village parks, too. Nassau County’s Nickerson Beach saw attendance jump from 11,477 in 2019 to 23,586 in 2020 even though the parks were capped at 50% capacity.
However, all that park-love took a toll. There was more littering, more people leaving more pet droppings on trails, more hikers taking more shortcuts off marked trails which leaves channels destroyed and just doesn’t look good. There were many reports of people not following masking and distancing guidelines, and of park personnel serving as ambassadors for respect and common sense.
As good as they are, our parks on all levels need more money and personnel to maintain and upgrade them, and more help from us in terms of politeness to our fellow parkgoers.
Anyway, we’re still in the outdoors, still seeking peace and recreation. And we might keep coming, even as the malls and movie theaters have reopened their doors.
24.What can we infer from paragraph 1?
A. Hikers found a new form of recreation.
B. The coronavirus might set off going around in the park.
C. Stump Pond is famous all around the world.
D. It’s easy to reach the backside of Stump Pond.
25.What does the underlined word “flagships” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The noted parks.
B. The best products.
C. Places of interest.
D. The most important ship.
26.What bad influence did the park-love bring about?
A. The parks were overcrowded.
B. The limited capacity was broken.
C. There were more pets and marked trails.
D. Damage has been done to the parks.
27.What’s the purpose of writing this passage?
A. To show the impacts of the coronavirus on parks.
B. To encourage people to go hiking in parks.
C. To appeal to people to do their part to protect parks.
D. To illustrate current situation of the pandemic.
C
Africa has become the fastest urbanizing region of the world, with rural migrants moving into cities. This rapid
transformation presents big challenges but also offers big rewards for countries willing to risk billions in an infrastructure (基础设施) building revolution unlike anything the world has seen before — and no country has answered Africa’s call quite like China.
China has also become a central player in Africa’s urbanization push, as a huge percentage of the continent’s infrastructure plans are being driven by Chinese companies and/or backed by Chinese funding.
“Right now you could say that any big project in African cities that is higher than three floors or roads that are longer than three kilometers are most likely being built and engineered by the Chinese.” spoke Daan Roggeveen, the founder of MORE Architecture, “The reasons for this presence are rather straight forward, many African contractors (承包商) simply don’t have the capacity for major development projects, so if you want to do large-scale construction you either turn to a western firm or to a Chinese firm, but the Chinese firm is always able to undercut you on price.”
Even before the Belt and Road was formally announced in 2013, China was making major space into Africa’s urban development. When the Communist Party of China first came to power in 1949, China began influencing Africa extensively, getting the People’s Republic recognized one country at a time. Before long, these political commitments were being repaid in concrete and steel, as China started building railroads, hospitals, universities, and stadiums throughout the continent. However, there were other reasons for China’s early partnerships with Africa. even though the colonial powers were largely gone or on the way out, the continent was still the same supply of natural resources it’s always been, and China wasted no time stepping into the power vacuum, giving Beijing the advanced position it has there today.
As Chinese President Xi Jinping once pointed out, “Inadequate infrastructure is believed to be the biggest bottleneck to Africa’s development.” Infrastructure is what Africa needs most and infrastructure is what China is most equipped to provide. Closing Africa’s infrastructure gap has been the puzzle of multiple waves of colonists, and China is the next in line to reach into the heart of the continent with railroads, highways, and airports.
28.Why does China play an important part in Africa’s urbanization?
A. Because no country answered Africa’s call.
B. Because all the Africa’s development projects are backed by Chinese funding.
C. Because most Africa’s infrastructure plans are set in motion by the Chinese.
D. Because China is most equipped to provide infrastruction to other countries.
29.What makes contractors prefer Chinese firms?
A. There are more Chinese firms.
B. The price is comparatively cheap.
C. The relation between China and Africa is close.
D. They don’t have the ability to complete any projects.
30.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The formation of the Belt and Road.
B. China’s great influence on Africa.
C. Efforts made to infrastructure building.
D. Reasons for China’s early partnerships with Africa.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Belt and Road in Africa
B. The Bottleneck to Africa’s Development
C. The Infrastructure Building Revolution in Africa
D. China Makes a Big Difference in Africa’s Urbanization
D
Brain aneurysms (脑动脉瘤) affect about one in every 50 Americans and can lead to serious medical emergencies, including stroke, brain damage and death if they burst. Existing treatment options are limited and often invasive (扩散), and surgical outcomes can vary widely from person to person.
Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have become the first team to produce a living, bioprinted aneurysm outside of the human body, perform a medical procedure on it and observe it respond and heal as it would in an actual human brain.
“While there are a lot of promising treatment options, some still have a long way to go,” said Moya, the project’s principal investigator. One common treatment is “clipping” — attaching a metal clip to the base of the aneurysm to redirect blood flow away and keep it from bursting. The procedure is highly invasive, requiring surgeons to open up the skull and expose the brain. A more common and less invasive treatment is the metal coiling (缠绕) approach. The downside to “coiling” is that success is highly dependent on a variety of factors, including the geometry of the patient’s blood vessels, which differ from one person to the next, researchers said.
“Animal models aren’t necessarily the best way to try out these options, as they lack direct observation of treatment effects and have uncontrollable aneurysm geometries. Unlike animal models, LLNL’s platform allows scientists to directly measure the liquid.
To take some of the guesswork out of aneurysm treatments, Hynes, the original principal investigator, realized researchers would need a way to validate more predictive 3D models that take patient geometry into account by bioprinting with human cells.
By combining the 3D-printed platform with computational models, researchers said they’ve developed a potential tool for surgeons to pre-select the best coil types, and perform “test runs” of procedures before attempting them on the human patient. “What’s exciting is that this platform copies the actual blood vessels and also is strong enough to handle a coiling procedure. This makes it ideal to be used as a training platform for surgeons.” Moya said.
In addition to a testbed for surgical training, researchers said the platform has potential for improving the understanding of basic biology and the post-surgery healing response. While early results are promising, the researchers cautioned there’s a long way to go before the platform sees application in the clinical environment.
32.What is the living, bioprinted aneurysm?
A. It’s a set of surgical instrument.
B. It’s a tissue transplanted in human body.
C. It’s a training platform for surgeons.
D. It’s a treatment option for brain aneurysms.
33.What’s the disadvantage of the “coiling” treatment option?
A. The procedure is highly invasive.
B. It may lead to serious medical emergencies.
C. Surgical outcomes vary widely from person to person.
D. It completely depends on the geometry of the patient’s blood vessels.
34.What makes animal models imperfect to try out the treatment options?
A. It’s difficult to observe and gather data on them.
B. They are not strong enough to handle a coiling procedure.
C. Their aneurysm geometries are totally different from human’s.
D. The potential response to the treatment options are uncontrollable.
35.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The previous experiments have been in vain.
B. The platform has improved the understanding of basic biology.
C. Brain aneurysms can be cured without any risk with the platform.
D. More needs to be done before applying the platform in the clinical environment.

Guide to Growing Strawberries
Strawberries are very easy to grow in almost all climates and soils, and probably are an ideal plant for gardeners. Strawberries grow very quickly under the right conditions, and several plants can produce hundreds of delicate berries. 36 . In fact, with proper planting and care, nearly anyone can become a successful strawberry gardener.
37
There are three main strawberry types: June-bearing, ever-bearing, and day-neutral. In short, Ever-bearing and day-neutrals typically yield less and smaller berries overall than June-bearing strawberry varieties.
38 . If you want fresh berries all year long and don’t mind picking smaller and fewer, choose day-neutral or ever-bearing varieties. If you need a lot of berries, choose June-bearing varieties.
Planting strawberries in the garden
To better grow strawberries in the garden, you just need to familiarize yourself with their needs such as soil, location. The soil is probably the most important factor that determines the success of the strawberry harvest. They grow best in well-drained soil, with a PH value between 5.5 and 6.5. 39 . They are also sensitive to light and heat, which means that they need to be planted in places well-lit and reliably protected from cold winds.
Fertilizing, watering and care
Strawberry plants need a lot of nitrogen (氮) in early spring and again in late autumn. Ideally, you have prepared the soil before planting the strawberries by adding fertilizer. 40 . The strawberry places high demands on its water supply. Water your strawberry plants with about 1 inch of water each week. Water the base of the plant rather than fruits and leaves.
Harvesting
For the best flavor and texture, harvest your strawberries when it is dry and cool.
A.Choosing the right variety
B.And however, growing strawberries is not hard
C.Strawberries grow best in a sunny, sheltered spot in the garden
D.Considering these characteristics will determine which type you need
E.Generally, strawberry varieties can grow on practically all garden soils
F.This will allow you to reduce or remove the amount of additional fertilizer your plants need
G.The nutritional needs of strawberries are not very high and garden soils are usually rich in nutrients
