It is quite apparent that competition surrounds every aspect of
human life whether in the United States or the Amazon rain
forest.Without it we would not have grown into primates (灵长目
动物).Or we would probably still be struggling to sharpen a bronze tool while crawling around on four legs in search of meat.Without competition,Columbus wouldn’t have discovered America and Ediso n would never have invented the light bulb.
The friendship,like all relationships between two people,involves competition.It isn’t competition in a traditional sense because there are no goals to be scored and no prizes.Perhaps the ecological definition—the simultaneous (同时的) demand by two or more organisms for limited environmental resources,such as nutrients,living space,or light—better explains it.
As in nature,high school life is governed by a set of laws,similar to a shortened version of Darwin’s theor y of evolution,overpopulation,and competition.There is an abundance of high school students and to distinguish them,ranking and categorizing (分类) take place.In high school,friendship coexists with competition even though at times the relationship is rough.In fact,in some circumstances,competition is too much of a burden for friendship to bear,causing it to fall apart.College admission is the final high school objective.Four years of hard work is to achieve good grades,and a student’s fate is determin ed not only by these achievements,but by the records of thousands of other seniors trying to
achieve similar recognition.
Nevertheless,by necessity,competition between students exists in all aspects of high school life.It sets and improves the standards in everything from sports to schoolwork.Healthy,friendly competition can have only benefits,but when it becomes too fierce,jealousy (妒忌)can tear friendship apart.Yet,despite all this,without competition,we would be lost.

4.What does the ecological definition mainly explain?
A.How friends compete with each other.
B.How to win the competition.
C.What the result of competition is.
D.What competition exactly is.

Perhaps the ecological definition better explains it,其中“it”指代的是前一句中的“competition”。

]
5.According to the author,what causes the high school students to compete? A.The number of them is too large.
B.Friendship is a burden for them.
C.They know the laws of nature well.
D.They are divided into different groups.

故选A 项。

]
6.Which best describes the relationship of friendship and competition? A.Friendship is always based on competition.
B.The degree of competition is vital to friendship.
C.Competition is terribly harmful to friendship.
D.Competition is a result of lost friendship.

]
7.What does the author think of “competition”?
A.The results of competition are out of control.
B.Competition becomes fiercer in high school.
C.Competition is certain to happen in high school.
D.Friendship is not as important as competition in high school.

Advertising is an audio or visual form of marketing communication that employs an openly sponsored,non-personal message to promote or sell a product,a service or an idea.Sponsors of advertising are often businessmen who wish to promote their products or services.Advertising is different from public relations since an advertiser usually pays for and has control over the message.It is different from personal selling since the message is non-personal,i.e.not directed to a particular individual. in the minds of consumers.Noncommercial advertisers who spend money in advertising items other than a consumer product or service include political parties,interest groups,religious organizations and governmental agencies.Non-profit organizations may use free modes of persuasion,such as a public service announcement.Advertising may also be used to reassure employees or shareholders that the company is successful.

Flat Holm is a picturesque landmass located in Britain’s Bristol Channel.The area’s low energy needs have therefore been fulfilled by using old-fashioned solar panels (太阳能电池板) and diesel generators (柴油发电机).The beautiful island is now,however,becoming increasingly popular with tourists wishing to explore the rural landscape and view the island’s seabird colonies.
Though this is welcome news,meeting the island’s growing energy needs without damaging its environment has been a challenge.Flat Holm team leader Natalie Taylor says,“It’s really important that we have a really high functioning system.From an environmental point of view,we want to reduce the use of diesel generators so that we can have as small an ecological footprint as possible.”
Fortunately,UK-based startup Renovagen had the perfect solution.The company’s Rapid Roll Solar PV system consists of flexible solar panels that can be unrolled like a carpet from a trailer (拖车) within two minutes and instantly put to work.According to the company,a small panel can provide 11 kw of power.
The technology is the brainchild of Renovagen’s Managing Director John Hingley,who came up with the idea after seeing something used as a backup battery for mobile devices about five years ago.In addition to being easy to unfold,the rollable panels are also more cost-effective to transport.Hingley says,“Compared with traditional rigid panels,we can fit up to 10 times the power in this size container.”
The solar panel“carpets”,laid on the island in early October,are being used to provide electricity for its pub and lighthouse.In addition to providing power for remote islands like Flat Holm,Hingley hopes the Rapid Roll technology will be useful in areas affected by natural disasters.A good example is Puerto Rico,where most people have been without electricity since Hurricane Maria destroyed the power lines.

(2019·广州模拟)China has been the birthplace of many of the world’s greatest inventions.It was,for example,the first country to produce paper money.Before the invention of paper money and coins,people used many different kinds of things for buying and selling.__1__This exchange of goods and services for other goods and services is called bartering.
__2__In 1200 BC,people in China began to use shells(贝壳) as ually the shells used as money were very small.This made it easier for people to carry money over long distances,and allowed for trade to develop between different parts of the country.
In the years which followed this invention,many other countries around the world began to do the same.__3__
The next development was in 1000 BC,when China started making bronze and copper shells.It wasn’t long before the Chinese made round coins out of metal:
__4__By 500 BC,metal coins had begun to appear in countries like Persia and Greece,and later in the Roman Empire.
About 1,000 years later,leather was used as money in China,and in 806 AD,the first paper banknotes were produced by the Chinese people.__5__
A.People also began collecting foreign coins as souvenirs.
B.However,as economies developed,such exchanges became impractical.
C.It was still many years before paper currency appeared in Europe.
D.They also used tiny shells as money for buying and selling.
E.As time went by,trade between countries increased.
F.During that time,for example,buying a chicken might cost several potatoes. G.The very first coins often had holes in them so that people could string them together.

1.F[根据空前的“people used many different kinds of things for buying and selling”及空后的“This exchange...is called bartering”可知,此处主要讲的是“物物交换”,F项中的“buying a chicken might cost several potatoes”是“物物交换”的一个例子,符合上下文文意,故选F项。

]

]
3.D[根据第二段内容及空前的“many other countries around the world began to do the same”可知,许多其他国家也开始这样做了。

“to do the same”指的就是“也开始用贝壳作为买卖的货币”,故D项“他们也使用小贝壳作为货币进行买卖”符合上下文文意,故选D项。

]
4.G[根据空前的“It wasn’t long before...out of metal”可知,不久中国人制造了金属制成的圆形钱币;根据空后的“By 500 BC,metal ter in the
Roman Empire”

]
5.C[根据空前的“the first paper banknotes were produced by the Chinese people”可知,此处讲到了纸币首先由中国人创造,故C项“很多年后纸币才出现在欧洲”与此处衔接紧密,故选C项。
