2023-2024学年山西省运城市景胜学校(西校区)高一上学期9月月考英语B卷
Our Favourite Tech Gifts of 2019
When it comes time for the holiday shopping season, we’re extra choosy about the countless technology products that we will buy and give to friends and family. Here’s what impressed editors, reporters and producers the most in 2019.
Lumos Matrix helmet
I recently bought a Lumos Matrix helmet(头盔)(﹩229)with built-in lights to make riding my bike at night a lot safer and less stressful. It’s a regular pain point for bikers like me to make sure careless drivers see you, especially when it’s dark. This does help.
-Matt Mcfarland, Writer
Goodreads app
Although this isn’t a gift, the free Goodreads app is a game changer. A t the beginning of 2019, I promised myself I’d read at least one new book every month. I set a goal of 12 books on Goodreads and use it to track my progress, keep a list of books I’m interested in and check out what friends and others on the app were recom mending. I read 35 books this year! (That’s up from five books last year.) Goodreads feels like one of the rare feel-good social networks.
-Kaya Yurieff, Tech Reporter
Ember coffee cup
I drink my coffee slowly, so it has routinely cooled by the time I get halfway through it. For my birthday, my mum bought me a cup (﹩99), which keeps my coffee warm until I finish it without reheating. I can also set the temperature I want. It makes my mornings so much easier.
-Millie Dent, Intern

3. Which of the following can best describe Ember coffee cup?
A.Simple. B.Expensive. C.Eco-friendly. D.Convenient
For many years, I strongly believed that my suffering was because of my size. I imagined that when the weight disappeared, it would take old wounds, hurts and rejections with it.
Many people with weight problems also mistakenly believe that changing our bodies will fix everything. Perhaps our mistake is believing that being thin equals being loved, being special, and being cared for. We fantasize (幻想) about what it will be like when we reach the long-awaited goal. We work very hard to realize this dream. Then, at last, we find ourselves there.
But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it will be different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will finally bring us happiness, self-worth, and, of course, love.
It took me a long time to realize that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Different cultures have different standards of beauty. In Samoa a woman is not considered attractive unless she weighs more than 200 pounds. More importantly, if it’s happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather than on the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us struggle hard to change our body, but in vain (徒劳的). We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our body and make friends with and care for ourselves. When we change our attitudes towards ourselves, the whole world changes.
4. The passage tries to stress the importance of ____________.
A.body size B.different beauty standards
C.culture difference D.attitudes towards life
5. What does the underlined word “everything” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The whole world. B.All the problems.
C.All the dreams. D.All the truth.
6. What can be inferred about the author?
A.The author is a Samoan.
B.The author probably got wounded in wars or accidents.
C.The author succeeded in losing weight.
D.The author has been troubled by her/his weight.
7. Which of the following statements is true?
A.One’s happiness is determined by a person’s weight.
B.Not all countries take being thin as the standard of beauty.
C.It’s entirely wrong to care about whether a person is fat or not.
D.Once a person loses weight, he/she won’t gain back the weight easi ly.
All over the world people enjoy sports. Sports help to keep people healthy and happy, and to live longer. Many people like to watch others play games. They buy tickets or turn on their TVs to watch the games. Often they get very excited when “their” player or team wins.
Some sports are so interesting that people everywhere go in for them. Football, for example, has spread around the world. Swimming is popular in all countries near the sea or in those with many rivers. What fun it is to jump into a pool or lake, whether in China, Egypt or Italy! And think of people in cold countries. Think how many people love to skate or ski in Japan, Norway or Canada. Some sports or games go back thousands of years, like running or jumping. Chinese wushu, for example, has a very long history. But basketball and volleyball are rather new. They are about one hundred years old. People are inventing new sports or games all the time. Water-skiing is one of the newest in the family of sports.
People from different countries often become good friends after a game together. Sports help them to understand each other. One learns to fight hard but fight fair, to win without pride and to lose with grace.
8. Why do people all over the world enjoy sports?
A.Because they want to keep healthy. B.Because they are happy.
C.Because they want to live longer. D.All the above.
9. Some people get excited when they watch a game because ________.
A.their favorite team wins B.they win the game
C.they get the good news D.they can’t help themselves
10. Which of the sports has a long history?
A.Water-skiing. B.Basketball.
C.Volleyball. D.Long jump.
11. People from different countries often become friends after a game together because ________.
A.they train their character in the game B.they understand each other
C.they are friendly to each other D.they help each other
It was a cold and snowy morning after the winter vacation. Actually, it was my first day at my new school. I was walking slowly and worrying about lots of things. It was 7:00 in the morning and there weren't many people on the road. A girl on a bike passed me quickly. She was riding on ice when suddenly she fell off her bike a few steps in front of me. She was trying hard to get up but fell once more. Without thinking, I went over and helped her stand up. She said, "Thank you," with a smile and then rode away. The words "Thank you" warmed me and this small event made me feel less nervous about my new school.
Finally, I got to school. The teacher led me to the classroom and asked me to sit down beside a girl. I was so nervous. I knew some of the students were looking at me but I didn't dare to look at them. Soon the first class started. It was English. They used a different textbook from my old school and I
didn't have a copy. As I was wondering what to do, a book appeared in front of me. “Let's share,” the girl next to me said." And hi, I'm Carrie." I looked up. It was the girl I helped that morning. What a surprise!
From then on, we became good friends. She was my first and best friend at my new school. Helping her also helped me find a friend.

My 12th birthday came at last. What a wonderful feeling it was to know that I turned twelve and that I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box wrapped up (包装) with nice pink paper with flowers on it. When I removed the paper and opened the box, I couldn’t believe my eyes.
I had got a cell phone! I ran to give my mom and dad the biggest hug ever, and said, “Thank you! I love you!”
“You’re welcome. We kn ew this was going to make you happy. But we give you this not only because you have turned twelve but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades.”
I said confidently that I would. As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts (联系人) on the first day. It felt like I didn’t even exist in that class any more. I didn’t pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. I texted my friends, surfed the Internet for stories or played games.
Luckily, I didn’t get caught using it. I had formed a habit of secretly enjoying my phone in class. But I was pretty sure that the teachers did notice that I stopped paying attention to them, because a week later we took a test and I failed. What’s worse, my parents had to sign the test.
