Among a group of middle-aged men and women, who were discussing bringing about quality education (素质教育), was a young man dressed in a white shirt. Within minutes, he was called onto the dais (讲台). Twenty-two-year-old Babar Ali was surrounded by educators from across India. He was popularly known as the world’s youngest headteacher.
The school that Babar started in poor Bhabta village has completely changed. When he
was nine years old, he had only eight students in his school. Now the school has 300 students and 10 teachers. The school is called Ananda Siksha Niketan. It is recognized by the West Bengal government.
Today Babar is a student in the morning. He is learning English literature at Berhampore Krishanath College. But he comes home in the afternoon to teach his students.
Babar was discussing education at the National Summit on Quality in Education (NSQE). The meeting was held in Bangalore, capital of Karnataka State in southern India.
“It all started as a game when I used to teach my sister, my first student in my backyard. Later, some children from the village often came to my classes and that was how the school was born,” he said.
His biggest achievement is that six of his students have now started teaching in his school after their college hours.
In another month, Babar’s dream of a school building will soon come true. Many people, a large part of whom are from Karnataka, have helped him realize the dream. They have given his school a lot of money.
Although he has received so much attention and recognition, he is still not fulfilled. “There are people in my village who do not go to school. And th ere is a long way to go as so many children still need to receive an education,” he says.

The sounds you make while chewing (咀嚼) have a great effect on the amount of food you eat, a new study has found. The results suggest that people are likely to consume (摄入) less if they can hear themselves eating.
Researchers at Brigham Young University (BYU) and Colorado State University (CSU) have found that your TV, radio, and computer are making you fat. Not by showing you attractive food ads but masking (掩盖) the sounds of your chewing.
Gina Mohr, an assistant professor of marketing at CSU, says that the sound of food is “an important sense in the eating experience,” but that consumers and researchers largely overlook its effect.
The team carried out three separate experiments to look at the effect of food sound. In one experiment, participants were given snacks to eat while they wore headphones playing either loud or quiet noises. Results showed that louder noise masked the sound of chewing, causing participants to eat more. Those in the group with the loudest sounds ate four biscuits, while the “quiet” gr oup ate 2.75 biscuits.
In another of their experiments they found that just having people hear chewing sounds through an advertisement can reduce the amount they eat. And one experiment showed that even asking people to think of the sounds of eating can also help reduce consumption.
The authors call this the “Crunch Effect.”
“When you mask the sound of consumption, like when you watch TV while eating, you take away one of those senses and it may cause you to eat more than you would normally,” said Ryan Elde r, assistant professor of marketing at BYU’s Marriott School of Management. “The effects may not seem huge but over the course of a week, month, or year, it could really add up.”
The authors strongly advise people to be mindful not only of how food tastes and looks, but also of how it sounds. So the next time you sit down for a meal, take your headphones off and mute the TV. Or find a movie where there’s a lot of very loud chewing.
7. Watching TV at mealtimes may make you fat probably because ________.
A. your attention is drawn to the pictures
B. it makes your food taste delicious
C. it influences your chewing speed
D. your eating sounds go unnoticed
8. It turns out that people who eat the most are those who ________.
A. listen to some quiet noises
B. wear headphones playing loud noises
C. try to think about their chewing sounds
D. watch the adds with loud chewing sounds
9. What would Elder probably agree with?
A. The Crunch Effect is a big deal in the long run.
B. It is a bad habit to talk with others while eating.
C. The five senses should be paid equal attention to.
D. It is better to choose food that makes the least sound.
10. The author writes the text to ________.
A. advise readers to eat less per meal
B. introduce the effect of food sound
C. encourage readers to eat healthily
D. show several ways to lose weight
