Chimps look like us,sometimes act like us,and are our close relatives. That is why a federally funded panel(专门问题小组)said chimpanzees should be treated differently than other laboratory animals when they were no longer needed for medical research.
Dr Peter Theran explained,“You can't just kill them. There are ethical(道德伦理的)and moral issues involved here. They didn't feel it was right to kill them just because they were no longer needed for research.”
Fifteen hundred chimpanzees in the US are housed in research facilities.Too many for current research needs.A panel(方格)for the National Research Council now recommends a long term care for the animals.Animal rights advocates still oppose using chimps for research but applaud(赞同)the effort.
“They recognized our moral responsibility to these very special animals. They've also suggested that retirement be recommended as a possible solution to this surplus of chimps,”said Peggy Cunniff.
The chimps were bred(养育,繁殖)for an expected increase in demand for AIDS research. They weren't good models for studying the disease, and demand dropped. Now research centers are worrying about paying for ongoing care for the animals.
Tom Gordon of the Yerkes Primate Research facility said,“Animals who reproduced in the breeding program in the National Institute of Health of the past decade have thirty or forty years of life remaining and that's a very long time to have the resources to maintain them.”
A number of the chimps have already been given to zoos, but the study recommends facility caring for the animals meet standards. The study suggested standards like those at the Yerkes Primate Center, where the chimps can play outdoors every day.
Dr Peter Theran said,“They could have been living in their own complex social environment in their own habitat so we have an obligation(义务)now to try to do that for them...to try to create a facility that comes close to matching that.”
Matching their natural habitat won't come cheap. The federal government already spends more than seven million dollars a year to care for the chimps.“It is a small price,”said scientists,“for the priceless research data the chimps have provided.”
1.From the passage,we can know that______.
A.a lot of money will be used in matching chimp's natural habitat B.they can live a long life less than 40 years
C.AIDS research needs hundreds of natural chimps
D.the chimps are the ancestors of human being
由最后一段首句“Matching their natural habitat won't come cheap.”
2.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A.Chimps are being used in medical research.
B.Chimps are closely related to human being.
C.A small price is needed in research of chimps.
D.Chimps are living in their complex surroundings.
由第一段首句“Chimps look like us,sometimes act like us,and are our close relatives.”
3.We can infer from the passage that______.
A.Peggy Cunniff is an animal rights advocate
B.chimpanzees are human's close relatives
C.the chimps weren't good models for studying AIDS
D.to care for the chimps needs to spend much money
4. The Yerkes Primate Center is______.
A.a place where the chimps are treated well
B.the name of a zoo which was given the chimps
C.a branch of the National Research Council
D.the name of a medical research center
倒数第三段中的“The study suggested standards like those at the Yerkes Primate Center...”
