A
Acquaintance (相识) Parties
Starting a new school and making new friends can be frightening. In order to get to know classmates easier, teachers can host parties that encourage the students to become acquainted with each other. This in turn promotes a comfortable educational environment.
Theme Party
Choose a theme for the party and encourage all the students beforehand to dress up in accordance to the theme. Decorate the room in accordance to the theme. This will promote socialization between the students. Play music and offer refreshments and snacks. This laid-back atmosphere and scene will allow the students to socialize before starting class.
Common Characters
Print out a list of each student’s name onto a worksheet and distribute them to the class. The students must talk to every other classmate to determine one thing they have in common. Each student should have a common factor written for each classmate. The common factors can be anything except physical features. By the end of the class every student will have gotten acquainted with the entire class.
Baby Picture Matching
Collect a baby photo from each student before the party and display all the photos during the party. Encourage the students to inspect the baby photos and then try to decide which photo belongs to which person. This will motivate students to start conversations with more persons in the classroom. At the end of the party, award a prize
for each correct guess.
Guess Who
As each student arrives, tape an index card with a character from a storybook or pop culture on his back. Do not allow the students to see their own cards. The students must then mix with each other to determine their assigned character. The students may ask questions. This will encourage socialization between the classmate in order to try and win the game.

A. Theme Party.

23. What do the last two parties have in common?

It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that the summer vacation is over. Some kids feel nervous, anxious or a little frightened on the first day of school because of all the new things; new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Let’s find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often read classroom rules and school rules to you so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Please pay close attention.
You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day, but it’s a great day to make new friends, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t know. In this way, you’ll make a good first impression on your new partners.
Seeing friends you haven’t seen for some time can make the first day a good one. You can make the day special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers. It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll need. But make sure that you organize them in advance in case you don’t have time in the morning.
24. What do the underlined words “kick off” in the second paragraph probably mean?
A. Find.
B. Study.
C. Start.
D. Teach.
25. What will you do on the first day of school according to the passage?
A. Share a story.
B. Revise new lessons.
C. Argue with new friends.
D. Learn about the school rules.
26. According to the passage, if you happen to see an old friend on the first day of school, how will you feel?
A. Happy.
B. Sad.
C. Nervous.
D. Worried.
27. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. What to know about a new school.
B. How to spend your first day of school.
C. What to do on your first day of school.
D. How to prepare for the first day of a new school.
C
Kevin Beard is my class instructor. Most weeks, I’d greet Kevin as he set up gloves, mats, and other equipment. So I was shocked when I arrived one day to find him standing in front of the room telling a story, with tears streaming down his cheeks. I was worried something had gone terribly wrong in his life, but as I listened to him talk, I heard him use words like “amazing” and “accomplishment.” I realized his tears weren’t out of sorrow, but happiness. Just a few days earlier, he’d received his GED (General Equivalency Diploma), at the age of 52.
Having dyslexia (阅读障碍), Kevin left school at a young age and then managed to support himself by taking odd jobs. In his mid-30s, Kevin finally landed an opportunity for a job with some promise: working for a sheriff’s department (治安部门). Amazingly, when he came clean with them about his education, they said they’d hire him as long as he got his GED. He agreed, optimistic about this new career potential, and kind of excited about giving school another chance.
Kevin studied with a tutor (家庭教师), and he did it for more than a decade, learning and practicing and correcting his mistakes, every free moment he had, often late into the night. It was a huge challenge, something Kevin compares to “climbing a mountain.” In fact, as Kevin took tests along the way, he did something interesting with each of his results. He posted them on his bedroom wall so that he could watch his progress. “I needed to see myself moving forward, and I wanted to speak,” he said.
Finally, he made it. “I can’t really describe what it’s like to finally achieve this,” he said. “I can hardly even put it into words. People are giving me graduation gifts! It’s a dream come true.”
This might sound like a perfect ending. But for Kevin, it’s a new beginning. He’s on a roll, and his next step is college. “Now that I’ve accomplished my GED, I’m hungry for education,” he said.
28. Why did Kevin cry in the classroom?
A. He was worried about his future.
B. He had reached one of his goals.
C He was moved by a touching story. D. He had experienced something terrible.
29. What was the response of the sheriff’s department when they learned of Kevin’s education?
A. They recommended a part-time job to him.
B. They assessed his suitability for the job.
C. They refused him directly.
D. They gave him hope.
30. How did Kevin encourage himself to keep going to get his GED?
A. By taking time to do things that interest him.
B. By reporting his test results to his tutor.
C. By writing himself encouraging words.
D. By reminding himself of his progress.
31. What can we learn from Kevin’s story?
A. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
B. The early bird catches the worm.
C. Practice makes perfect.
D. Grasp all, lose all.
D
Friends play a very important part in everyone’s life. Friendship usually develops during childhood. New friends are made when you progress through school. Those friends that you make as a student can usually last long.
Friends influence your development, maturity (成熟) and sense of responsibility (责任). A familiar opinion is “You can tell a lot about a person by knowing who his friends are.” Friendship is based on common interests. If you like sports, most of your friends are likely to be active. If you enjoy reading and shopping, most of your friends do the same.
Some people call you their friends for the wrong reasons. These people are not really friends. They are superficial (表面的) only “friends” on the outside, not the inside where it counts. Superficial friends only want to be your friends if it is to their advantage. True friends are there whether you are rich or poor. It is easy to have many so-called “friends” if you are rich. By this time you should be able to recognize your friends as the real or the “phoney”.
True friends are most special. Sometimes they might be easy to find, so you can consider yourself very lucky if you have one true friend. This friend is eager to help you whenever necessary. He or she knows you would do the same for them. A true friend is someone you can talk to about any subject or problem. You and your true friend have a good understanding of each other. True friends support you, take your side, and build up your confidence.
32. What’s the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. How to make true friends.
B. What is friendship based on.
C. We should make friends in our childhood.
D. Friends play a very important role in our life.
33. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. It is easy to have many true friends if you are rich.
B. If you have no music in you, none of your friends will be a music lover.
C. The friendship developing during your school days will be with you for a long time.
D. What you value above anything is the friendship developing during childhood.
34. What does the underlined phrase “so-called ’friends’” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Friends in need.
B. Fair-weather friends.
C. Those who can help you.
D. Those who often gives you money.
35. What’s the author’s attitude towards “true friends” according to paragraph 3?
A. True friends are too difficult to find.
B. You can only share sadness with a true friend.
C. You can only share happiness with a true friend.
D. True friends will stand by you whatever happens.
