A Mountain of Green Beans
Another envelope in the mail. There’s my name, Alexander Spencer, typed on the front. I throw it under the bed. The piles of envelopes are growing.
The envelopes were applications to all the colleges I was supposed to attend. I did open the first envelope. Then I saw the application, all those blank spaces I was supposed to fill with my own writing, spaces for my name and birth date and grade average and …statement of purpose. I looked at them for a long time. I could write for hours and not fill all those spaces. So I put the application back in the envelope. I would fill it out the next day, when I had time. But another envelope arrived. And then the pile began.
The pile scares me — it is really like a monster. All the while, I feel the weight of a million envelopes raining down on my head until my grandmother calls me and wants to know how I am. “I am overcome by too many tasks,” I say.
“Honey, you just take it bit by bit,” she says, and she reminds me about the green beans. When I was a little kid I hated green beans. But my mom said I couldn’t leave the table until I ate ten green beans. All alone at the table, I stared at the green beans for what seemed like hours. It was a mountain of green beans. I couldn’t do it.
My grandma came to me and asked if I could eat one green bean.
“But Grandma, I have to eat ten!”
She said all I had to do was to eat one green bean. One tiny little green bean. So I ate one. It was bad, but not as bad as I’d thought it would be. Then she asked me again if I could eat one. So I ate one green bean nine more times.
My grandma doesn’t know about the envelopes, but she tells me anyone can do one thing every day. Back in my room, I lay down on the bed. Just like I used to do when I was a little kid, I hang my head down to look at the pile of envelopes. There it is. But instead of a monster, I see a pile of green beans. Who’s afraid of green beans?

【2014高考英语综合能力测试题】
When we consider the large number of people who need help, being part of the solution can seem overwhelming. There are hundreds of thousands of kids trapped in quitting schools in the U.S. alone. There are many millions of starving children around the world. How can a single person who isn't a billionaire have an impact? Where do you start? Start with one small act.
When Hilde Back was a schoolteacher in Sweden, she decided to sponsor (赞助) one child's education in Kenya. Hilde's sponsorship of Chris cost about $15 per month. Most poor children in Kenya cannot afford to pay secondary school tuition. Unfortunately, without an education, an extremely difficult and poor life is practically guaranteed. Thanks to Hilde's generosity, Chris avoided that fate.
Chris graduated from high school, went to University of Nairobi and then attended Harvard Law School. He became a U.N. Human Rights Advocate, and he started a charity. He got the name
of his anonymous (匿名的) sponsor through the Swedish embassy and named his nonprofit organization the Hilde Back Education Fund (HBEF) after the sponsor he never met.
HBEF pays tuition for poor students in Kenya. Since the charity's start, 350 children have been supported. Three hundred and fifty lives have been changed directly so far. That doesn't even include the impact on their families. And who knows how many of these students will be inspired, as Chris was, to give back.
When talking about why he started HBEF to educate poor children, he said, "I think I want to see a world in which children have equal opportunity and are not robbed of their future by poverty, like so many of my friends in the village were."
It's interesting that the only reason why Hilde Back was even alive to support Chris was because of a stranger's kindness. This is a reminder that we can all make a difference, and you never know what a big impact a small act of kindness can have.
26. What's the function of the first paragraph?
A. To tell a story.
B. To give an example.
C. To introduce the topic.
D. To list some questions.
27. Which of the following best describes Hilde Back?
A. She used to be a poor student in Kenya.
B. She did a small act to make a big difference.
C. She offered something great to a poor student.
D. She did a small act to get a fund named after her.
28. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Chris named his fund after meeting Hilde Back.
B. Chris would have a fate of poverty without an education.
C. Chris' fund is aimed to help poor children in his village.
D. Chris knew the name of his 'sponsor before graduation.
29. How is the passage organized?
A. Topic- Examples - Conclusion
B. Topic - Argument - Explanation
C. Introduction - Comparison - Discussion
D. Introduction- Description- Explanation
30. What might be the best title of this passage?
A. Help the poor
B. Learn from Hilde Back
C. To be a generous sponsor
D. Start with one small act

I didn’t reali ze how short I was until I started school. There, a few kids picked on(欺负)me, calling me names. Then I knew. After that, I began to hate the first day of school each year.
I didn’t know who was new and would stare at me as I struggled to climb the school bus stairs. Some of the kids would point and say, “Look at that kid. Look at her.”
As time went on, I just tried to smile and accept the fact that I was going to be noticed my whole
life. I was determined to make my uniqueness an advantage rather than a disadvantage. My friends became increasingly protective. They’d help me up the bus steps. If people were cruel, they would take them aside and correct them.
What I lacked in height, I made up for in personality—my ability to laugh, even at myself. For example, one time I was reaching into the washing machine at my parents’ house to grab the w et clothes. I fell all the way in and yell for Mother, who was sitting nearby reading the paper. Watching feet flying everywhere, she laughed quietly and said, “I should leave you there.”I laughed with her.
I’m 47 n ow, and the stares have not decreased as I’ve grown older. People ask my friends if I live in a dollhouse. They look in disbelief when they see me get out of my car on the driver’s side. During those times, I try to keep a good attitude. When people are rude, I remind myself, “Look what else I h ave—a great family, nice friends. . .”

that______.
A. she is able to live a happy life like a normal person
B. she isn’t afraid of being noticed by others any more
C. some people still don’t treat her as a normal person
D. more and more people treat her with respect now
3. How is the author feeling now about her situation?
A. Quite optimistic.
B. Very satisfied.
C. Deeply upset.
D. Rather anxious.
4. We can infer that the author believes that______.
A. society should help the disabled as much as possible
B. only your parents and friends can help you
C. what people say about you is none of your business
D. all people should be treated with respect

The other day at a supermarket, I saw a naughty child of about six crying loudly, falling to the floor and refusing to move. All the while the troubled mother was trying to persuade him to behave well but failed. A little smack(打)on his bottom would have done the job, I thought.
Teenagers also cause discipline (纪律)problems. As a teacher I had a 16-year-old student who had fallen in love with a waiter at a fast-food restaurant. In fact, she had left home to stay with
him. So we decided to put her in the school hostel. She refused. When she heard her mother begging her to stay in the hostel, she turned round and said, “Why don’t you stay in the hostel if you like it so much?”
My palms were itching to slap her for being so rude but the poor mother continued to cajole her, hoping the gentle persuasion would work wonders. It did not. Later I heard that she had run away from home again.
The list goe s on and on. Could it be that today’s parents are softer and believe that they must not rod (棍棒惩罚) their children for fear of the bad result? Or do they actually believe that the children will get rid of the bad habits and behave well naturally as they grow older? I beg to disagree. I believe it is the parents’ duty to discipline the children even at a young age.
My children who are now adults will prove the fact that I used the rod when I thought it necessary. Later when they went abroad, they related to their British university friends on how they were disciplined. Their friends abroad were idled with horror and told my daughter that I could be charged with child abuse. However, my daughter showed great respect for me when she told them that she would not be where she was today if not for my strict discipline.
1. According to the passage, the author would probably ______.
A. beat the children every day
B. treat the children in a softer way
C. leave the children as they are
D. punish the children when necessary
2. The underlined word “cajole”( in Para. 3 )probably means ______.
A. persuade
B. scold
C. forgive
D. punish
3. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The naughty boy’s mother hit him.
B. The teacher’s daughter lived with her mother.
C. The daughter was thankful for the author’s strict discipline.
D. The author was char ged with child abuse by the daughter’s friends abroad.
4. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?
A. Spoil Kids
B. Value Discipline
C. Respect Parents
D. Protect Kids
