It was another frustrating day. I came home from school, changed my clothes and got ready for work. I worked at a local restaurant in town.
I went to work feeling down-and-out. And to make matters worse, my work here was the same thing over and over again. Dealing with customers who complained about their food that was being served was too big or too small.
Three elderly ladies walked in and sat by the window. They watched how I was working.
When they finished their meals, I went over to clean their table. They talked to me for a while about school, how I was doing, what grade I was in and what I planned to do in the future.
As they were leaving, they walked past me and one of them said to me in a confident, gentle
voice, “You are going places.” And that was it. They left the restaurant and I was pretty much in awe(赞叹). I had tears in my eyes, because they gave me reasons to believe in myself. They picked my spirit up from being down –and--out and gave me a reason to keep on working hard and to give it my all.
People used to tell me that I couldn’t have a career in television until I had a degree and was out of college. I’m now the host of a student-produced television show. And the best thing is that I’m only 17 years old and I am a senior in high school.

A. is studying in a college

So you think you know your dog. But how well does your dog know you? She probably recognizes you when she sees you. But can a dog tell by simply looking at you whether you have a happy or an angry expression on your face? Researchers in Austria have taught pet dogs to know the difference.
Dogs are very mindful of sound. When dog owners shout or speak in a strong, harsh(刺耳的)voice, dogs often act guilty and quietly move away from the area. Researchers have found that dogs can look at our faces, and tell the difference between a smile and a frown. The animals were able to recognize a look of approval from one of disapproval.
Researchers performed a series of experiments. They taught dogs to recognize facial expressions. They showed the dogs two pictures of either the upper of lower half of a person’s face. On one picture, the person looked happy. The other appeared angry. The dogs were then shown images of the eyes or mouths of people they had never seen before. They were also shown the left half of the faces used in training. Once the dogs learned to recognise which image was happy or angry, they could easily identify the same expressions in pictures of any face.
Corsin Muller, who led the study, says future studies will try to show whether dogs can learn the meaning of facial expressions—for example, whether a frown shows that someone is angry. “What we can say with our study is that they can tell these ones are different. But what we cannot be sure of at this point is what exact meaning they are associating with these different expressions.”
“Of course it seems likely that they would associate (联系)some positive meanings with the smiley face and they would associate some rather negative meanings with the angry face. But what exactly they are associating with these expressions we cannot know at this point.” Corsin says.

A. the exact meaning of a frown
B. a frown is an angry expression
C. human looks carry different meanings
D. a smiley face may have negative meanings
28. In which part of a website does the text probably appear?
A. Technology.

Ms Li, who divorced more than 20 years ago, received more translating work. This helps her support her 26-yearold son who suffers from autism(孤独症)and is not able to take care of himself.
Ms Li i s a lecturer in Financial English at Xian Transport University’s Economic and Banking School. Since August 2013, she has been reading the dictionary six hours every day from 3 am. Within 19 days, she finished the task for the first time. To help her memorize, Ms Li borrowed 465 English language magazines from the university library. “My biggest dream is to enter The Brain to improve myself,” said Ms Li. The Brain is a popular reality TV show in China which uses a series of games to test the contestants’(竞争者)brainpower.
Ms Li said that her son cannot look after himself. Since her divorce more than 20 years ago, she and her son have been relying on each other. As a single mother, Ms Li had to lock her son in the house whenever she went out for work. She said when she returned the house was always a complete mess. But she said she never gave up. “If I can fly I will fly; if I can’t fly I will run; if I cannot run I will walk ,” she said. “No matter what you must continue.”
Apart from English, Ms Li has learned to speak more than 10 different languages, including French, Russian, German, Japanese and Polish. She hopes that by memorizing the 220,000 words from the dictionary, she can encourage students to learn English and increase their vocabulary. “Lecturer Li r eally is a living English-Chinese Dictionary. Most people follow others blindly mainly under the effect of peer(同龄人)pressure. Some people also feel it safe to follow a large number of people. In some rare cases it might be right to follow the crowd(群众), but in most cases this can be one big mistake. Actually there are reasons why we shouldn’t follow the crowd blindly.
According to a study, people tend to follow the crowd when they aren’t sure about the direction they should take. This means a large number of people could be following others without understanding what’s right and what’s wrong! T his attracts more people to follow them and the result is that most people move in a certain direction even if it isn’t right.
A man who wants to be successful always hopes for others' guidance and he usually follows the same path of most people, but the question this man never asks himself is: are all of those people successful ?Of course not! If you want to follow a crowd, then follow a successful one. However, in real life you'll only find one successful person among hundreds of people, and that's why following the crowd makes no sense at all.
Most people act without thinking wisely. If you always follow others because they're greater than you in number, then sooner or later you'll discover that you're making decisions you might regret later.
However, should we never follow the crowd? No. I'm not trying to say you should never follow the crowd, but instead I'm just asking you to think wisely before you take a decision. lf you find others are right, there is no problem in following them, but if you have doubts about the direction they're moving in, don't follow them blindly.
33. Those who follow others because they want to succeed should think about .
A. whether they are in the same path
B. whether those being followed are successful
C. whether they are moving in a right direction
D. whether there are more successful ones to follow
34. What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A. It needs some time to think wisely.
B. We shouldn’t regret what we have done.
C. We should think wisely before deciding to follow others.
D. Making others follow us is better than following others.
35. Which of the following will the author agree with?
A. It is wrong to follow other people.
B. Those who follow others won’t succeed.
C. Only those foolish people will follow others.
D. One should use his head before he follows others.

In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A true friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair-weather friends (不能共患难的朋友). 36 But when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a true friend? I look for certain qualities of character.

Another quality of a true friend is reliability(可靠性). I can always depend on a true friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. 39 That is to say, if I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. 40 We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship together. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience and learn from each other.
