第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题, 每小题2分,满分40分)
A
Tom Sawyer is known as one of the most beloved characters in American literature (文学), but new research found that Mark Twain based this character on his friend named Tom Sawyer. He admired his firefighting friend so much that he gave the character his name.
Mark Twain and Tom Sawyer had many adventures together, gambling(赌博)in Nevada and drinking in pubs. Tom Sawyer once worked as a volunteer firefighter, policeman and customs officer. Before making his way out West, Tom Sawyer used his strength to save 90 people from a burning ship. Mark Twain was particularly moved by this story because his own brother died in a fire while working on a similar steamboat.
The two men became friends immediately after meeting in 1863, with Tom Sawyer traveling to Virginia City, while Mark Twain was working as a reporter there.
After one night they returned to San Francisco, Mark Twain told his friend that he would base a character in his yet-unwritten book on him. Tom Sawyer said, “One day he said to me, ‘I’m going to put you between the covers of a book, Tom.’ ‘Go ahead, Sam,’ I Said, ‘but don’t disgrace(贬黜)my name.’”
Besides their fondness of drinking, the two men also shared a hobby for storytelling. Tom sawyer believed that it was his anecdotes(奇闻轶事)about his own childhood that inspired Mark Twain to create a book on him.
Finally Mark Twain said that the character of Tom sawyer was based on a mix of three real people---John B. Briggs, William Bowen and himself. In spite of this, the historical evidence shows that there might be a fourth, more prominent(突出的)influencer.

American author Mark Twain once noted that “life would be surely happier if we could only be born at the age of 80 and gradually approach 18.” Twain’s words were only one of many complaints about aging. The ancient Greek poet Homer called old age “hateful”, and William Shakespeare termed it “terrible winter”.
Alexander the Great, who conquered most of the known world before he died around 323 B.C., may have been looking for a river that healed the ravages of age. During the 12th century A.D., a king called Prester John ruled a land that had a river of gold and a fountain of youth.
But the name linked most closely to the search for a fountain of youth is 16th-century Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon. He thought it would be found in Florida. In St. Augustine, the oldest city in the U.S., there’s a tourist attraction. It is said to be the fountain of youth that Ponce de Leon discovered soon after he arrived in what is now Florida in 1513. However, elderly visitors who drink the spring’s water don’t turn into teenagers.
But the tale of the search for a fountain of youth is so appealing that it survives anyway, says Ryan K. Smith, a professor of history. “People are more attracted by the story of looking and not finding than they are by the idea that the fountain might be out there somewhere.”
Still, a few grains of truth have helped to support the story. Kathleen Deagan, a professor of archaeology, says a graveyard and the remains of a Spanish mission dating back to St. Augustine’s founding in 1565 have been discovered near the so-called fountain of youth. Michelle Reyna, a spokesperson for the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park in St. Augustine, says the fountain has been a tourist attraction since at least 1901 and may have been attracting visitors since 1860. 60.According to the passage, who searched for a fountain of youth?

63.The passage mainly tells us _____.
A. how the fountain of youth came into being

Having a great collection of books at home doesn’t really mean that you are a person who loves reading. It may be got from your father or your father’s father, and it can just impress people around you with the fact that you are a person of culture.
From my point of view, reading is very important in our daily life. For example, reading is a way of gaining knowledge in different areas. It can help us have a great imagination, and it makes things easier when it comes to making compositions on different themes. It gives you the possibility to speak about science, even if you don’t work in this field. You can expre ss your opinions about a political event
because you have read something about that.
Secondly, reading gives us the possibility to enter the world of imagination. We can imagine what life will be like in the future. Sometimes, we compare ourselves with the people in the stories we read and they can give us some clues to solve the problems and tell us what to do in certain situations. Books are based on real life. Even if writers are considered to be somehow different from common people, they often face the same problems as we all do.
In short, I would like to say that literature is the perfect way of enriching our culture, expressing correctly, having a rich vocabulary, being able to understand different fields and really being considered to be a learned person.
67. In the author’s opinion, a person has many books at home only to _______.
A. make his house look more beautiful
B. show that his father is a learned person
C. impress others with the fact that he loves reading
D. show that he is rich enough to collect many books
68. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the text?
A. Reading a lot is good for writing
B. Reading can help us gain knowledge
C. Reading can help us have a great imagination
D. Reading helps us enter the field of politics easily
69. We can learn from the third paragraph that______ .
A. people in stories are always unbelievable
B. books may help us solve problems
C. writers are good at dealing with problems in life
D. writers often have different experiences in life
70. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Why Is Reading Important in Our Life
B. How Can We Become a Learned Person
C. Different Reading, Different Functions
D. Having a Good Collection of Books Means a Lot

Some of us eat more than we should on Thanksgiving Day. 71 However, many of us will continue to overeat throughout the holiday season. Nobody likes to feel terrible, and few of us are trying to gain weight, so why do we continue to overeat?
72 Most of us think we are controlling the amount of food we eat, but a research shows that our environment has much influence on the amount of food we eat.
In one study, people attending a movie received free popcorn that was not fresh. 73Many of the popcorn eaters found that the popcorn was not fresh, but the people receiving large bags still ate 34% more than those receiving smaller bags. When they received fresh popcorn , the people with large bags ate 42%more than the people receiving small bags.
In another study, the larger the plate, the more we pile on. Participants
received a plate and were allowed to serve themselves. Researchers then sneezed (打喷嚏)on the plate and told participants to fix another plate. 74 participants put 25% more food on the larger plate. This shows that the size of the plate influences the amount of food we choose to take.
75 A wide variety of food is served during the holidays and that makes us eat more. To prevent overeating and weight gain, please use a small plate at meals. When you have eaten the food on that plate, don’t take more unless you are actually still hungry.
A. The second plate was larger than the first
B. Some of us feel terrible because we eat too much
C. It’s not surprising that we eat more food during the hol idays
D. Researchers used two kinds of bags with two different colors
E. According to a research, most of us are eating a lot more than we think

From the picture we can see that it is the old man’s birthday today. Now he is sitting on a sofa alone. Maybe his wife has passed away. On his right side is a big birthday cake sent from his son. And there are also some presents given by his daughter lying on his left side. Yet the old man doesn’t feel happy at all. Instead, he looks very sad because he feels lonely very much.
As is known to us, our life is getting better and better. Some young people think that their parents will be happy and satisfied as long as they give them enough food to eat and enough clothes to wear. But as far as I am concerned, it is quite wrong. Old people get lonely easily because during the daytime they have no work to do. So as their son or daughter we should spend as much time as possible keeping them company and take good care of them in the meantime in every possible way.。
