13、Sustainable(可持续的) housing refers to environmentally safe building designs. This type of housing can, either fully or partly, use renewable energy, such as sun or water, to power the homes. There are many different types of sustainable housing.
Green roof homes are buildings with roofs that include different kinds of plants. The plants bring many advantages to the home, such as stopping noises from outside. Green roofs also often help keep the building cooler during the summer and warmer in the winter. They can be used as gardens for growing fruits, vegetables or flowers that improve the air quality not only for the home, but also for the nearby area.
Underground homes are another type of sustainable housing. These are usually made much like traditional homes, but are built partly or fully underground. Some have moss-covered( 青苔覆盖的) roofs. Many of these houses make use of geothermal(地热) energy, or heat stored inside the Earth, to regulate temperature. Besides being underground, many of these houses have special-placed windows that allow natural sunlight to brighten them.
Glass houses have walls made almost totally from glass. This allows natural light to warm the whole home during the day. These homes often turn sunlight into electricity that can power the home at night. This system reduces electricity bills and is friendly to the environment.
Another type of sustainable housing is floating homes, or houseboats. These houses float on water and are typically light-weight and small in size. Some of them are filled with argon gas(氩气) which helps to keep the house afloat. Many floating homes make use of solar or power got from water flows to make electricity and heat.

14、
There’s much to see under the sea, but you need to remember that light behaves differently in water than in air. The objects appear closer to you than they exactly are. You might find yourself reaching out to touch something and completely missing it.
Objects under water will appear larger than they would on the surface, too. Be careful not to tell any stories about the big fish that got away. The fish might not be so big after all! It’s just because sometimes things c an seem to be as much as about 33 percent bigger in water!
What’s more, in deeper water, colors just don’t seem as bright. In fact, it looks as if some colors are missing. Remember the color of an object results from the wavelengths(波长) of light that are reflected from its surface. And light is taken in as it moves down through the water.
Swimmers wear wet suits to keep warm underwater. Let’s take a bright red, yellow, and blue wet suit as an example. These colors are hard to miss on the surface of water. Watch carefully the changes in color as you descend in water. The red part now looks almost black because the red light wavelengths, the longest among these three colors, are missing. As you go down deeper, the same thing will happen to the yellow part and in the end to the blue part. Even at a place of about 6 to 9 meters underwater, you will look terrible, like a ghost(鬼怪)! And you have to wait for your return to the surface to enjoy the bright colors again.
Do you have a better understanding of the behavior of the light underwater? We need to be careful about the objects around us and explore(探索) their mysteries by ourselves.
1.You miss the object underwater when you want to touch it because___________.
A.your eyesight is quite poor
B.your are not quick enough
C.it is not as close as it seems
D.it disappears very quickly
2.The example of the wet suit is used to explain the change of __of an object underwater in paragraph 4.
A.the size B.the color C.the position D.the weight
3.The underlined word “descend” probably means _________ in paragraph 4?
A.move up B.move on water
C.stop breathing for a while D.go down
4.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.A four-meter-long fish looks three meters long underwater.
B.Much water will be taken in by the swimmer deep in the water.
C.The wavelengths of red light are longer than those of the blue light.
D.Y ou will see a ghost if you go as deep as 6 to 9 meters into the sea.
5.Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?
A.The Standard of Color Underwater
B.The Direction of Light Underwater
C.The Beauty of Color Underwater
D.The Behavior of Light Underwater

15、Have you ever heard of "a ball of energy"? People often use it to describe very active children. But today we tell about an invention called the soccket, that is a real soccer ball of energy. Julia Silverman explains that in fact the soccket is a portable generator(便携式发电机).
Julia Silverman and Jessica Matthews developed the soccket as part of a group project for an engineering class at Harvard University.
There are mechanisms(装置) in a soccket. When you kick, hit or throw it, energy is then kept in it by these mechanisms instead of disappearing into the environment.
Then the user can put something directly into the ball, like a lamp, or a mobile phone charger so that they can get energy from it.
For every fifteen minutes of the game play, the soccket can provide enough electricity(电) for an LED lamp for three hours, and the ball can store(储藏) up to 24 hours’ electricity.
The International Energy Association reported last year that nearly one and a half billion people in the world had no electricity to use, and most of them live in sub-Saharan Africa and in India and other countries in Asia.
Julia Silverman and Jessica Matthews both had experiences in developing countries before they began the project. They knew that power shortages are a serious problem in really areas.
There’s an energy crisis in the world. One out of every five people in the world don’t have any electricity. A nd besides that, there are a lot of health problems because what people use instead of the electricity are harmful choices like kerosene(煤油) lamps, which produce a lot of smoke.
Julia Silverman says the soccket ball is one small solution(解决方法) to a big problem.
Jessica Matthews and Julia Silverman hope their soccket ball will shine more light on the problem of power shortages. It offers people a chance to put their energy into the world’s most popular sport and get some energy in return.
1.From the passage, we know the soccket is ________.
A.an active child B.an invention C.a lamp D.a mobile phone
2.If you play the soccket for half an hour, it can provide an LED lamp with electricity for ________.

3.The underlined word "crisis"in the passage means ________.
A.a time of safety B.a time of difficulty C.a time of success D.a time of pride
4.We can infer(推断) from the passage that ________.
A.Julia Silverman has never been to developing countries before
B.Active children like to play soccket
C.kicking a soccket can let the energy disappear into the environment
D.people are expected to get some energy by playing soccket
5.The best title for the passage should be "________".

16、There is a popular belief that goldfish only have a three-second memory. But a 15-year-old schoolboy from Adelaide has just finished an experiment to tell us that it is not true. He shows everybody that the goldfish is smarter than we think.
"I don't believe that they had a three-second memory because animals need their memory, so they build up over time a knowledge of where the food is," said Rory Stokes, a student at the Australian Science and Mathematics School.
He did the experiment in a small tank(鱼缸)of goldfish. "I decided to get a bit of red Logo and just feed them next to that. Every day I'd put it in and spread food around it." He said.
"At first they were a bit scared of it, but by the end of the three weeks, they were actually almost coming before I put the food in."
After leaving the fish alone for a week, Rory placed the red Logo block in the tank again.
"They remembered perfectly well," he said.
"They actually had a time faster than the average(平均)of the three feeds before I left."
The goldfish showed that they not only could store information, but also had the ability to get it back at a later date. Culum Brown. a researcher at Syd ney′s Macquarie University, has studied fish behavior for more than ten years.
He says his studies of Australian native fish show fish are smart animals that know how to avoid enemies and catch food like any other animal.
"The thing that I really liked abo ut Rory′s experiment is that he not only got that classical conditioning going but the fact that he could get thorn next just to that specific coloured marker. I thought it was really good." He said.

19、Tommy is a member of my team called Moonlight. He is a 15-year-old student in Grade Nine. He has many strong qualities, such as being clever, generous, and helpful. He is not only fond of reading detective stories but also likes TV programs about sports news. Since this term, he has devoted most of his effort to studying. As a result, he has made great progress. Besides, he succeeded in helping Detective Lu solve a kidnapping case. Our school presented him with Award for Bravery this year.
However, Tommy is also facing some problems of our age. For one thing, he suffers from stress whenever the exam is coming. For another (thing), he doe sn’t have enough sleep.
As for his problems, I’d like to offer him some advice. First, he should go over what he has learned before exams. Second, it’s better for him to manage his time wisely so that he can have enough time to rest.。
