(2021·安徽模拟)When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Doctor Gibbs. He was very kind.
After Doctor Gibbs retired, he was planting trees. His dream was to turn his land into a forest. The good doctor had some interesting ways about planting trees. He never watered his new trees. Once I asked why and he told me that watering plants
spoiled(宠坏) them because it made them grow weaker. He said we had to make things hard for the trees so that only the strongest could live. And trees would grow deep roots in search of water.
He died a couple of years after I left home. But the trees he planted 25 years ago were tall and strong. I planted some trees a few years ago. Two years of much care meant they grew up weak. Whenever a cold wind blew, most of them fell down.
Every night before I go to bed, I often pray(祈祷) for my children that their lives will be easy. But lately I've changed my prayer. I know my children are going to meet difficulties. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere. What we need to do is to pray for deep roots, so when the rain falls and the winds blow, they won't fall down.

(2022·原创)In the Chinese history, there was a great king in the Zhou Dynasty. One day, the king asked his officials for advice on what to do with prisoners(囚犯).
One official said, “I have heard if you love someone, you even love the crows(乌鸦) on the roof of his house; if you hate someone, you even hate the walls and windows of his house. The prisoners were bad people fighting against us. We must kill them.”
But the king didn't agree. “I think we should divide them into different groups according to their crime(罪行). Some should be killed but we should let the others live,” another person gave his idea. However, the king didn't think it was a proper way, either.
Then a third one said, “I think all the prisoners should be set free and sent back home to work for themselves. Also, you should keep the rules strictly for anyone in our country. The people are sure to believe in you if you administer(管理) our country by morality(道德) and law.”
The king thought his idea sounded great so he followed it. As a result, the country soon became stronger.
