改掉坏习惯的过程及影响英语作文
Changing a Bad Habit is Hard Work!
Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm in the 5th grade. Today I want to tell you about this really tough thing I've been working on lately - changing a bad habit. It's not easy at all, but I'm trying my best because I know it will be good for me in the end.
The bad habit I'm talking about is biting my nails. I've been doing it for as long as I can remember. Whenever I get bored, nervous, or just out of habit, my fingers go right into my mouth. I've asked my parents and teachers why I do it, but they just say it's a bad habit that I need to stop.
At first, I didn't think it was that big of a deal. Sure, my nails always looked kind of rough and my fingertips sometimes bled a little. But I figured, hey, lots of kids bite their nails, right? It's not like I'm the only one.
But then, a few months ago, my teacher Ms. Roberts had a talk with the whole class about good habits and bad habits. She explained that habits like nail biting, hair twisting, and thumb sucking aren't just harmless little quirks. They can actually cause problems over time.
For nail biting, Ms. Roberts said it can lead to seriously damaged nails and skin infections if you're not careful. Plus, she said, you never know what kind of germs are getting into your mouth from your fingers. Gross! I never really thought about that before.
After that talk, I felt kind of embarrassed about my nail biting.
I looked around and it seemed like most of the other kids in my class didn't have that habit. I wondered if they thought it was weird or childish. I decided then that I really needed to try and stop.
The first step, Ms. Roberts said, is to admit you have the bad habit and want to change it. Check - I knew I was a nail biter and I wanted to stop. So I was off to a good start!
The next step is to figure out what triggers the bad habit. For me, it was usually when I was bored, or feeling anxious about something like a big test or assignment. Knowing those triggers would help me be more aware when I was about to start biting.
Then comes the really hard part - actually stopping yourself and replacing the bad habit with a good one. Ms. Roberts gave us some ideas, like squeezing a stress ball, doodling, or chewing sugar-free gum instead of biting nails. I decided to try the gum and doodling.
Let me tell you, those first few weeks of changing my habit were so tough! Every time I caught myself about to bite my nails, I had to really concentrate and make myself stop. Sometimes I forgot, and looked down to see my nails already in my mouth. Darn it!
I kept a little chart to track how many times I bit my nails each day. I was really disappointed at first because the numbers weren't going down very quickly. But Ms. Roberts reminded me that old habits die hard, and I shouldn't get discouraged.
Little by little, I started getting better at catching myself before biting, or stopping myself right after the first nibble. I noticed my nails were starting to look better too! Not as ragged and chewed up. That made me feel really proud and motivated to keep going.
Another thing that helped was having my friends and family remind me about my habit when they saw me doing it. At first I felt a little embarrassed when they pointed it out. But I knew they were just trying to support me, so I tried not to get defensive.
Overall, I would say it took a few months of really working at it before my nail biting habit was mostly gone. These days, I hardly ever catch myself doing it anymore. My nails actually look kind of long and nice now! Who knew?
Changing this bad habit has been a big accomplishment for me. I feel so much better about myself, more mature. And giving up that habit has shown me that I can take control and improve other areas of my life too.
For example, I've started trying to eat healthier by replacing chips and candy with things like fruits, veggies, and yogurt for snacks. It's not easy, because I really love junk food. But if I could give up nail biting through hard work and discipline, I know I can get this healthier eating thing down too.
My advice to anyone out there working on kicking a bad habit? First of all, be patient with yourself! Change doesn't happen overnight. There will be days when you slip up, and that's okay. The important thing is to get back on the horse and keep trying.
It also really helps to have a good support system - friends, family, teachers who are cheering you on and giving you reminders. Don't get mad at them for pointing out when you're doing the bad habit. They're just trying to help!
Finally, be proud of yourself for even trying to improve. A lot of people never bother to work on changing their bad habits. But you're doing the hard work now, and it will pay off in the end
when you've broken that habit for good. You'll feel so much better about yourself.
Well, that's my story about giving up nail biting. It was really tough, but so worth it in the end. If this 5th grader can do it, you can too! Thanks for reading, and good luck with your own habit-changing journey.。
