Our School's Love of Reading Month

Last month was Love of Reading Month at our school, and it was the best month ever! Our teachers said reading is really important for learning new things and becoming smarter. So they planned a whole bunch of fun activities to get us excited about books.

My Super Exciting News Report on I Love Reading Month!

Guess what, everyone? March is I Love Reading Month at my school! Isn't that just the best? Reading is my total favorite thing in the entire universe. Well, other than recess, lunch, and art class. But reading is definitely in the top 5!
For the whole month, we got to do all sorts of fun reading activities and events. My teacher Mrs. Appleton says it's to help
get us excited about books and motivate us to read more. Not that I need much motivation - I'm already a total book monster! I read every night before bed. My mom has to pry my current book out of my hands and turn out the lights or I'd read all night long.
But I Love Reading Month is still awesome because we get to do special reading-themed activities that we don't normally do. Like reading buddies! Once a week, the older kids from the 5th grade class come read with us. We get to pick our favorite books from the classroom library and then pair up with a 5th grader to take turns reading pages out loud. My reading buddy is a girl named Lily and she's really nice. She helps me with the tricky words I get stuck on.
We also got to go on a super cool field trip to the public library downtown! They had a special event set up just for students celebrating I Love Reading Month. A real live author came to talk to us about her books and what it's like to be a writer. Her name was Emma Fletcher and she wrote this cool graphic novel series about a young wizard trying to pass her wizardry exams. I got her to sign a copy of the first book for me!
But maybe the most fun part of I Love Reading Month is this reading contest we're doing. Each student was given a little
paper log to keep track of how many books we read during March. The student who reads the most books wins a big prize at the end of the month! I'm not going to tell you what the prize is - it's a surprise. But I'll give you a hint: it's something every bookworm would looooove.
Of course, I'm determined to win that prize. I've been a reading machine this month! I've already filled up one log with the titles of books I've finished. Just this week I've read "The Mysterious Dinosaur Egg," "A Pizza The Size of The Sun," and all seven books in that "Frankie the Funky Flamingo" series. I read those last ones all in one night - they're pretty short but honestly pretty silly too. Though I do have a soft spot for that zany flamingo.
My biggest competition is probably Zack from my class. He's a pretty big reader too, though nowhere near as obsessed as I am. I saw him reading the newest "Captain Stupendous" book on the playground yesterday. Those are pretty long, so he's catching up! But I'm not worried. My reading pace is unstoppable.
Last night before bed, I excitedly told my parents "Only two more weeks until the end of I Love Reading Month! I've read 27 books so far. Do you think that's enough to win the prize?" My dad ruffled my hair and said "That's my little bookworm! You're
already a winner in my book." My mom agreed and gave me a high five.
Whether I win the prize or not, I've had a total blast this month celebrating my love of reading. I got my hands on so many awesome books I hadn't read before. I feel like a reading expert after listening to that author. And I've pushed myself to read more than ever before! Reading is just the coolest. Books can take you anywhere - onmagical adventures, to other worlds and galaxies, anytime in history, or just on fun everyday journeys too. I may only be 8 years old, but I know for sure that reading will always be one of my very favorite things to do.
I can't wait to see what fun reading activities my teacher has planned for the last couple weeks of I Love Reading Month. Maybe we'll get to dress up as our favorite book characters one day? Or have a classroom bookswap wherewe can trade books with friends? Whatever it is, you can count on me to be first in line. Reading is so awesome and I'm proud to be a book lover!

My Love for Reading Month News Report
Hi everyone! My name is Lily and I'm a 5th grader at Sunny Valley Elementary School. This month was extra special because it was "Love for Reading Month" at our school! We had so many fun activities and events to help us discover how amazing reading can be. I'm going to tell you all about it!
First up, we kicked things off with a big assembly where the principal talked about why reading is so important. She said that reading helps us learn new things, uses our imagination, and can even transport us to magical worlds! After her speech, we got to watch a short play put on by some high school students about the adventures of Alice in Wonderland. It was really cool!
Then for the whole month, we had different reading challenges and contests to enter. One was seeing who could read the most books! I read 10 chapter books which I was pretty proud of. Another contest was for writing the best book report. I didn't win that one, but I enjoyed writing about my favorite book Charlotte's Web. The winners got buckets of books as prizes!
My favorite event was definitely the character costume day. Students could dress up as their favorite book character and we had a big parade around the school. I went as Hermione Granger from Harry Potter with a robe, wand, and even did my hair all crazy and frizzy! There were so many cool costumes like Peter
Pan, The Cat in the Hat, and even a dragon from one of the fantasy books.
We also had some special guests come read to us. A children's book author came and shared her latest book which was about a puppy who wanted to be a superhero. Then the local library hosted a few storytelling sessions where a librarian would read us classics like Where the Wild Things Are. It was so fun to hear those stories again!
In class, we did lots of fun reading activities too. We had to create posters advertising our favorite books to try and get others excited about reading them. I made mine on The BFG by Roald Dahl which is about a big friendly giant who catches dreams. For our big project, we had to pick a book setting and create a diorama shoebox scene of what it looked like. I picked the setting of the Quidditch pitch from Harry Potter and made little Quidditch players flying around!
Overall, Love for Reading Month was a huge success! I discovered some awesome new books that I can't wait to read more of over the summer. Reading is so much fun because you can go on endless adventures without even leaving your room. I'm really going to miss all the fun activities when the month is over, but I know I'll always have my love of reading!

I wore round glasses, a robe, and I even brought a wand! Tommy came as the Big Friendly Giant, and he looked so silly being taller than all of us. Lots of other kids dressed up as superheroes, cartoon characters, and classic storybook stars. We had a big parade around the school where everyone could show off their costume. It was awesome!

In return, Sarah got to borrow my copy of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. We spent the whole week reading our new books every spare。
