Gray had great academic performance in high school and wanted to apply to Harvard and other top schools, but could not afford the application fees, let alone school fees. But with a passion for business, he dreamed of attending a college in the Northeast so he could be close to New York City and other major business centers.
In the process of his application, Gray was determined to deal with it by himself. He looked at hundreds of websites, checking scholarship requirements. Many scholarships had very specific qualifications that he didn’t meet. But Gray had 600 volunteer hours and started a nonprofit organization which organized volunteer opportunities for students when he was in high school. So he searched for scholarships that looked for excellent grades combined with leadership and community service.
Soon, he got the Gates Millennium Scholarship, which covers school fees from a bachelor’s to a doctor’s degree. A $20,000 scholarship from Coca-Cola followed. He also received a 820,000 Horatio Alger Scholarship and the $ 10,000 Axa Achievement Scholarship. And smaller awards just kept coming. In the end, he had amazing success, receiving 34 scholarships worth $1.3 million — enough to pay for years of school, plus cover his living expenses with some leftover to invest.
Gray has used the money for schooling, room and board, daily supplies, travel for interviews, and other needs. After appearing at national conferences and in the media, hundreds of students and parents have emailed and called for advice, which inspired Gray, now a business major at Drexel, to make a mobile-phone app called Scholly—short for “scholarships”— to help other teens get scholarship money.
Though the app had thousands of downloads, Gray and his colleagues decided to keep the price only at 99 cents because their purpose was more public service than profit. As for
his career plans, he has the goal of a true enterpriser: “Ideally not to have to get a job when I graduate.”
4.What did Gray do when he applied for scholarships?
A.He started a nonprofit organization.
B.He took part in community service.

On January 7, David Bennett went into the operating room at the University of Maryland Medical Center for a surgical procedure never performed before on a human. The 57-year-old Maryland resident had been hospitalized for months due to a life threatening disease. His heart was failing him and he needed a new one.
Bennett’s condition left him unresponsive to treatment and ineligible (不合格) for the transplant list or an artificial heart pump. The physician-scientists at the center, however, had another-also risky- option: transplant (移植) a heart from a genetically-modified pig.
“It was either die or do this transplant,” Bennett had told surgeons a day before the operation. “I want to live. I know it’s a shot in the dark, but it’s also my last choice.”
It took the medical team eight hours to finish the operation, making Bennett the first human to successfully receive a pig’s heart. “It’s working and it looks normal. We are thrilled, but we don’t know what tomorrow will bring us. This has never been done before,” Barkley Griffith, who led the transplant team, told the New York Times.
While it’s only been five days since the operation, the surgeons say that Bennett’s new pig heart was, so far, functioning as expected and his body wasn’t rejecting (排斥) the organ. They are still monitoring his condition closely.
“I think it’s extremely exciting,” says Robert Montgomery, transplant surgeon and director of the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, who was not involved in Bennett’s operation. The result of the procedure was also personally meaningful for Montgomery, who received a heart transplant in 2018 due to a genetic disease that may also affect members of his family in the future. “It’s still in the early days, but still the heart seems to be functioning. And that in and of itself is an extraordinary thing. Up to now most experimental heart transplant procedures have been done between pigs and other animals. This is the first time that surgeons have taken it into a living human.”

If someone created a flying machine capable of tracking you down by listening for your voice, you might be terrified. But what if you were trapped in ruins after a natural disaster and first responders couldn’t locate you? Maybe then a human-seeking drone(无人机) wouldn’t be such a terrible idea. That concept is the focus for engineers at Germany’s Fraunhofer FKIE Institute, who’ve built a drone to find people by detecting(探测) human screams.
“The human-seeking drone would be ideal for post-disaster situations, such as earthquakes, hurricanes and wildfires,” said Macarena Varela, one of the lead engineers. “They could hover over an area that rescue crews have difficulty getting to and locate exactly where people may be trapped.”
Locating people by sound presents its share of challenges. An auditory(听觉的) system would need to distinguish human cries from sounds that often happen in nature, such as animal calls and wind. It might also need to recognize patterns associated with kicking, clapping or other ways people try to get the attention of rescue teams.
Engineers took those situations into account when building out their concept drone. They recorded themselves screaming, tapping and creating other noises that might be a sign of people in trouble. Then, they analyzed each sound frequency to find common signatures and used those to train artificial intelligence software. They also worked to remove the noise created by the drone and other environmental sounds.
Once the software part was complete, the team placed tiny digital microphones under the drone and used signal processing techniques that enabled them to track where human noises are coming from. The microphones also enhanced the volume and clarity of the speech. So far, they have conducted successful open field experiments, finding that the drone can estimate a victim’s location within a few seconds of picking up sound.
Next, they would like to add a higher frequency microphone to a drone to acquire more audio sound signals. The idea is to pick up noises from hundreds of meters away, Varela said. In the real world, victim’s location data might one day be sent wirelessly to emergency crews carrying a tablet.
12.What is the advantage of the human-seeking drone?
A.Its high speed of flying.B.Its long working hours.
C.Its quick response to screams.D.Its easy access to disaster scene. 13.What can the auditory system do?
A.Recognize human cries.
B.Pick up sounds from far away.
C.Send victim’s location data to a tablet.
D.Improve the quality of human screams.
14.What does the underlined word “signatures” in paragraph 4 refer to?

二、七选五
Work from Anywhere Movement
For a lot of us, working from wherever we wanted was a bit of a dream. It would mean we’d be able to visit family and not take holiday days. But suddenly that “dream” of not working in the office became a reality for many. Working from home over the last years has proven that it isn’t always necessary for teams to physically be together and there is more flexibility. 16
An obvious benefit for many employers is reduced costs. With a widespread workforce, there’s no need to have an office big enough for everyone. They also save on travel costs, as meetings that once “needed” to be done face-to-face can now be done online. 17 With the work from anywhere movement, employers can hire global talents. They’re not restricted to people living nearby.
18 In an ever changing and developing working world, offering benefits like this could be what makes a company stand out from another for a specific candidate.
For many employees, working from anywhere supports mental health. 19
Imagine ending a particularly stressful meeting. Rather than going back to your office desk, you step out your door and have a coffee in the sun or walk along a beach. In Addition, working from anywhere allows you to have a better work-life balance. It lets you travel to see family, watch your daughter’s soccer game, and go to the little bakery—all while being paid.
20
A.But it’s not only about money.
B.However, every coin has two sides.
C.It decreases stress and other concerns.
D.Your time is spent on the things that matter.
E.There are a lot of benefits for companies and workers.
F.Offering remote job positions makes a company more competitive.
G.Offices are increasingly where you go to put the company into company.

Danilo hurried through the halls of the school for a ceremony. Ahead of him, his dad was emptying a litter bin. Danilo hoped his dad wouldn’t see him. He lowered his head, trying to get mixed in the other students. He felt embarrassed that his dad was the school cleaner.
“Good morning, son,” his dad said as Danilo passed. Danilo walked faster, pretending not to hear. But the other boys had already noticed.
“Hey, Danilo,” a boy called out. “There’s your dad, Santos, the school sweeper! Maybe he needs your help.” Another boy cut in, mentioning that Santos could do so much more than sweep. He could empty the litter. The boys all laughed.
Danilo couldn’t wait to go to middle school next year, where he would not be laughed at. He looked over his shoulder. His dad worked with a smile on his face. How could he ignore such unkind words?
Danilo ran into the meeting hall. Many people were seated, waiting for the school to announce the Teacher of the Year. His best friends, Nathaniel and Frances, had saved a seat for him. They made guesses about whose name was on the plaque(匾). They had many wonderful teachers. Danilo liked all of them. It would be hard for him to pick just one.
