An Introduction of Pride and Prejudice
Jane Austen, an English novelist, whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism and biting social commentary have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics.
Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen’s most widely read and popular novel, was published in 1813. It portrays life in the genteel rural society of the England in the early 19th century, and tells about four marriages. The main one is between Elizabeth and Darcy. Elizabeth is intelligent, lively and attractive but with a tendency to judge on first impression. Darcy is handsome, wealthy, and bright and has excessive pride. At the beginning, Elizabeth is not satisfied with Darcy’s arrogance and their love is full of twists and turns because of various misunderstandings. At the end of the story, they overcome their pride and prejudice to fall in love with each other. People study this work from its themes, structure and techniques, etc. Some of them research the marriage and try to find the author’s view of love. Some analyze it in a stylistic perspective to see the function of certain technique’s role in the work. Some investigate the relationship between the marriage and money in the work, etc. The themes of the work are the love and marriage, together with the money, class. The work describes the love stories and marriages of eight main characters. It can be obviously seen from the opening lines of the novel. The true love would be realized with the consideration of partner’s personal merits as well as the material conditions and social status. Jane Austen employs the writing techniques of irony, free indirect speech and humor. She uses irony to criticize the unreasonable traditional moral values and disclose gentries’ pretence in the aspects of language, structure and so on. She also uses free direct speech to express her narrative stance of feminism and employs humor to make characters more vivid and interesting. I am most impressed by the word that Darcy says when his proposal is refused by Elizabeth. He says,’ but disguise of every sort is my abhorrence.’ He is unwilling to change his personality to flatter Elizabeth, so is Elizabeth. They show their real side, so they can know each other deeply and resolve the conflicts better. I would like to analyze the work from the factors that influence marriage. The novel depicts four different marriages, happy or unhappy, showing the marriage situation of the England in the early 19th century. During their love experiences, external and internal factors affect their relationships, which are also important parts of marriage.
In conclusion, pride and prejudice is a masterpiece and reach a high degree of writing techniques. It teaches me that financial condition and love should be considered before married and don’t judge people by first impression.。
