Winning a remarkable science award is really a big deal, especially if you are 12 years old. But Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones, as stated in the press release.
“The top winners have exhibited boundless curiosity,” Maya Ajmera, president and CEO of Society for Science, said in the press release. “Their remarkable research not only reflects their talent but also paves the way for an exciting new future.”
Shanya’s inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022, reported The Washington Post. “I had never really experienced something like that before,” she told The Washington Post about the early morning fire at Holder’s Country Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smoke detectors, and yet it still burned down,” she added.
After she studied fire statistics, Shanya spent over a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could have prevented the fire. Unlike traditional smoke detectors that sense active fires from the smoke in the air, Shanya’s thermal (热的) imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring.
With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer, the device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning. Creating the prototype (原型) was difficult and the hardest
part was the programming. “I had two designs, and my first design completely failed. It was a really big challenge I had to go through,” she said. The final device outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants to bring the costs down to make it even more common than previous smoke detectors.
“Shanya saw a problem, went after it and tried to solve it, and that’s what we need to encourage with all young people,” said Ajmera. She also highlighted the significance of supporting individuals, especially girls and kids of color, in STEM fields, as research indicates that many young people drop out of these areas.
24.What can we learn about Shanya from the first two paragraphs?
A. She created an important platform for her peers.
B. She demonstrated her curious nature as a student.
C. She earned a large amount of money from the award.
D. She was younger than the other winners in performance.
25.What inspired Shanya to develop her fire detection system?
A. Her experience with a destructive fire.
B. Her ambition to win the science award.
C. Her interest in computer programming.
D. Her aim to enhance STEM education for girls.
26.What is an advantage of Shanya’s invention?
A. It can issue a warning about a potential fire.
B. It consists of two parts that are easier to manage.
C. It can detect active fires through smoke in the air.
D. It operates when a fire breaks out within ten minutes.
27.Which can be the best title for the passage?
A. An Advocate for STEM Education
B. An Award Winner of Cooking Safety
C. A Young Innovator in Fire Detecting
D. A Junior Creator of a New Smoke Detector

Cortisol (皮质醇), often referred to as the “stress hormone (激素),” plays a crucial role in managing our body’s stress response. Recent discussions on platforms like TikTok have contributed to a widespread misinterpretation that imbalances in cortisol levels are directly responsible for a range of health problems, such as loose skin, sleep disturbances, and digestive issues. As highlighted by experts like Martin Picard from Columbia University, the relationship between cortisol levels and various physical symptoms is complex and not entirely straightforward.
Cortisol is released by the adrenal glands in response to various stressors, whether they are psychological, such as receiving an unsettling work email, or physical, like encountering a bear during a hike. This hormone helps in regulating energy supply and metabolism (新陈代谢), with its levels typically peaking in the early morning and decreasing as the day progresses. However, long-term stress can disturb this natural rhythm, resulting in continuously high cortisol levels. Such sustained high levels of cortisol can have adverse effects on health, including a weakened immune system, high blood sugar levels, and mental health issues such as depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. In severe cases, too much cortisol production can lead to Cushing’s syndrome, a condition that causes significant physical changes and requires medical treatment.
Given the dynamic nature of cortisol, assessing cortisol-related problems accurately often requires professional evaluation. Home testing for cortisol may not produce reliable results, emphasizing the need for consultation with healthcare professionals for a comprehensive assessment. While managing cortisol levels effectively does not involve a single universal solution, research has shown that practices such as yoga, mindfulness, and moderate exercise can be
beneficial in regulating the body’s stress response. These activities not only help in reducing immediate stress but also contribute to training the body to handle stress more efficiently over time.
In summary, while cortisol plays a key part in how our body manages stress and overall functioning, linking many health issues only to cortisol imbalances overlooks the complex interplay between hormones, stress, and health. Adopting a holistic approach to health, which includes seeking professional advice and developing personalized stress management strategies, is crucial for maintaining well-being.
28.What can we know about cortisol?
A. Its level always remains stable.
B. It has no impact on physical well-being.
C. It is directly responsible for sleep disorders.
D. Its role has been wrongly interpreted on TikTok.
29.What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A. Stress management depends on mindfulness.
B. Regular exercise guarantees lower cortisol levels.
C. Home testing for cortisol is highly recommended.
D. Measuring cortisol accurately involves medical tests.
30.What does the underlined word “holistic” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Comprehensive.
B. Immediate.
C. Physical.
D. Medical.
31.Where is this text most likely from?
A. A book review.
B. A scientific paper.
C. A health magazine.
D. An educational guide.

The term parasocial interaction (虚拟社交) was introduced in the 1950s by the social scientists Donald Horton and R. Richard Wohl. It was the early days of home television, and they were seeing people form a close connection with actors who were appearing virtually in their home. Today, the definition is much broader. After all, actors, singers, comedians, athletes, and countless other celebrities are available to us in more ways than ever before. Forming parasocial bonds has never been easier.
Psychologists document cases of parasocial relationships that can go much deeper, with severe consequences. Scholars note parasocial bonds range from casual talk about stars to intense emotions, to uncontrollable behavior and fantasies. At the deepest level, the parasocial relationship can be dangerous, such as when a fan loses touch with reality and secretly follows a star. It can also lead to confusion about one’s own identity, particularly in adolescents who are still forming their sense of self, as they may model themselves on the media figures with whom they have parasocial relationships.
In 2021, two psychologists from York University, in Canada, found that forming parasocial bonds was strongly related to avoidant attachment. That is, people who tended to push others away in their day-to-day lives were more likely to relate to fictional characters. You can easily see how parasocial relationships could be a replacement when one finds real-life attachment difficult. This could start a feedback cycle, in which avoiding close relationships stimulates parasocial bonding, which in turn leads to reduced interactions with real-life family and friends as the fans spend their time and energy on someone who doesn’t know they exist.
My purpose here is not to say that parasocial interactions are always bad for you, or even abnormal. Rather, it is to suggest that heavy parasocial bonding might be a signal that you are crowding out the real people who can give you the love you truly need. One way to address this is to get some more distance from your fictional friends, thus pausing the feedback cycle and giving yourself more space to pursue in-person connection.
32.How has parasocial interaction changed according to Paragraph 1?
A. It has become more accessible.
B. It has affected more celebrities.
C. It has lost much of its significance.
D. It has turned into a two-way process.
33.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Reasons behind celebrity following.
B. Origins of dangerous relationships.
C. Different types of parasocial relationships.
D. Potential harm of parasocial relationships.
34.Which of the following can lead to parasocial relationships?
A. Socializing with strangers.
B. Having strong family support.
C. Participating in group activities.
D. Struggling with relationships in reality.
35.What might the author suggest for those with heavy parasocial relationships?
A. Meeting fictional friends in real life.
B. Seeking guidance from professionals.
C. Hanging out more with real friends.
D. Creating more space for being alone.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

After graduating from UCLA as a film-making major, I was brimming with confidence, thinking to myself that I was bound to make a splash in this industry. Yet after being declined by countless enterprises, I ended up finding a temporary job as a birthday clown to make ends meet. I had to admit that the pay of playing the clown was pretty decent, but I struggled a lot with my new identity. Every sleepless night, I couldn’t help asking myself the same question, “Shouldn’t I be a filmmaker rather than a joker doing a ridiculous job?”
For certain parties, I had been assigned to play a specific character. Usually, the company would drop off a trash bag filled with a costume for me the night before the party. It was cruel, since these costumes smelled like the broken dreams of every failed actor that’d worn them before me.
One night, they handed me my trash bag and said, “Tomorrow you’re going to be Batman.” At the time I had a giant mustache, and a superhero with a mustache wasn’t what parents would anticipate. But I wasn’t in the mood to alter my
physical appearance for that job, because that would have meant me admitting I was more of a clown than a filmmaker. So I didn’t shave.
The next day, I went to the party. I had to leave my car parked far enough away so that the kids wouldn’t see Batman driving a broken SUV. As a consequence, I had to walk to the party. Normally at these parties, all you have to do is pop in through the front door and say, “Surprise! Batman’s here!”
But a group of kids playing at the front door spotted me approaching, like, a quarter of a mile away, which made me start to regret my option. I was thinking, “Gosh, my stupid mustache is going to ruin this party.” Sure enough, once I got close enough for them to start identifying the features of my face, the entire party burst into laughter.
