In ancient Greece, Socrates was famous for holding knowledge in high respect(尊敬).
One day one fellow met the great philosopher(哲学家)and said, “Do you know what I just heard about your friend?” “Hold on a minute,” Socrates replied. “Before telling me anything I'd like you to pass a little test. It’s called the Triple Filter Test(三重过滤测试)”. “Triple filter?” “That’s right,” Socrates continued.
“Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you’re going to say. That’s why I call it the triple filter test. The first filter is Truth. Ha ve you made completely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?” “No,” the man said, “actually I just heard about it and...”
“All right,” said Socrates. “So you don’t know if it’s true or not. Now let’s try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?”“No, on the contrary...”
“So,” Socrates continued, “you want to tell me something bad about him, but you’re not certain it’s tr ue. You may still pass the test though, because there’s o ne filter left: the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?”
“No, not really.” “Well,” responded Socrates, “if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?”

What should we do to protect animals and plants that are in danger of becoming extinct? Setting a rule such as, “Must not hunt these animals or pick these plants” is a good solution. All we have to do is follow the rule, right?
In Japan, there is a law called the “Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties”. This law protects animals and plants that are few in number, such as storks and sea turtles, and their habitats, as “natural treasures”.
To protect threatened animals and plants, Japan has othe r laws too. One is the “Law for the Conservation of endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora”. Wow, that’s a long name! This law protects 51 kinds of threatened animals and plants in Japan such as the Iriomote Cat and Blakiston’s Fish Owl. Under this law, people are prevented from hunting or taking these animals and plants and destroying their habitats. Also it requires protecting them and increasing th eir numbers. Another law is the “Wildlife Protection and Hunting Law”, which protect s the areas for birds and animals.
Many other countries also have their own laws and rules to protect the rare plants and animals. To prevent people from catching wild animals and selling them to other countries, the Washington Convention was made in 1973. More than 160 countries have signed(签署) it. We are not allowed to sell and buy the plants and animals listed in the convention.
It is not until all the people around the world obey these laws that the plants and animals will be protected from extinction. But sadly, although there are these laws, some people selfishly take the plants and animals without permission just because they are rare and can be sold at high prices. We cannot tolerate such behavior.
51. How many laws made by Japan are mentioned in the passage?
A. Two.
B. Three.
C. Four.
D. Five.
52. According to the writer, how can we really protect the animals and plants from extinction?
A. Only when we have a lot of laws to protect them.
B. Only when we realize the importance of it.
C. Only when all the people around the world obey the laws to protect them.
D. Only when all the countries have signed the Washington Convention.
53. Which of the following doesn’t mention(提到) the protection of the habitats?
A. Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties.
B. Law for the Conservation of endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
C. Wildlife Protection and Hunting Law.
D. The Washington Convention.
54. T he underlined word “tolerate” in the last paragraph has the similar meaning to “_________”.A. accept B. punish C. follow D. praise
55. What is the best title of the passage?
A. How to protect threatened animals and plants
