Nice Places in America
◆The Doaks’H ouse in Waterford, Ohio
In the small town of Waterford, Ohio, one local household stands out. One fall Saturday every other year or so, Roger and Shirley Doak open their doors for family, friends and strangers. Since the 1960s, they’ve turned a day devoted to making ap ple butter into an all-day event. They start the fire at dawn, then take turns stirring it, and have a buffet until sunset. By the end of the day, they’ve created apple butter together.
◆Pflugerville High School, Texas
In a school of about 2,300 people, students love each other, regardless of race or ability.
Perhaps the school spirit comes from events like Pay It Forward Day, which rewards students for kindness or the Coats for Kids Drive, a competition challenging schools to donate the most coats—which Pflugerville has won for the past six years.
◆Oriole Park in Baltimore , Maryland
Sure, Oriole Park in Baltimore, Maryland, is a fun place to watch a baseball game with a family. But this stadium goes beyond rooting for the home team; it also roots for acts of kindness. During weekend games, one of the nicest students to catch our eye was a middle school boy named Thomas Moore who grew his hair long enough to donate it to children with cancer.
◆Rock Hall , Maryland
The sign to Rock Hall, Maryland, should be your first mark that you’ll be welcomed. It shows off the town’s motto, “Nice People Live Here.” And they aren’t just empty words. Take a walk around the town and you'll see so many kind waves that strangers must think they’ve been mistaken for s omeone else.
21.What can you do when you attend the event in the town of Waterford, Ohio?
A.Donate clothes to strangers.

Recently, a scientist did some experiments. He left a group of 4-year-olds in a room with a bell and a candy. If they rang the bell, he would come back and they could eat the candy. If, however, they didn't ring the bell and waited for him to come back on his own, they could then have two candies.
In the videos of the experiments, he could see the children hiding their eyes, trying to exercise self-control so they could wait and get two candies. The results were different. Some broke down and rang the bell within a minute. Others lasted 15 minutes.
The children who waited longer went on to get higher SAT scores. They got into better colleges and had better adult success. The children who rang the bell quicker were more likely to have received worse teachers and parental evaluations (评价)10 years later and were more likely to have drug problems at age 32.
The experiments are worth noting because people spend a lot of time thinking about how to improve education, and how to become rich. But when the result is not good, they will come back to ask "How do we get people to get the sort of self-control that leads to success?" This is to enter the world of human nature.
So these experiments, along with everyday experience, tell us that self-control is very important. Young people who can sit through boring classes to get a degree can work hard in order to learn a language well. They can avoid drugs and alcohol. For people without self-control skills, however, school is a series of ordeals. No wonder they drop out and their later life is a group of foolish ideas, such as drug use and stealing.
24.What is the purpose of these experiments by the scientist?
A.To find good ways of training children to learn.
B.To show that children's education is important.
C.To test children's self-control and later success.
D.To test children's intelligence of ringing the bell.
25.What do the underlined words "broke down" probably mean?
A.Failed to wait.
B. Kept waiting.
C. Hid the candy.
D. Ate the c andy.
26.H ow long did the scientist's experiments last according to the text?
A.Just 15 minutes.
B. Within 10 years.
C. Less than 14 years.
D. About 28 years.
27.What will the children without self-control do at school according to the text?
A.They will improve their education.
B.They will suffer a lot from boring lessons.
C.They will become very rich and successful.
D.They will work hard to catch up with others.

Do you want to find a job that you just need to sit and sleep on a sofa? It is ridiculous, but it happens. 26-year-old Anna Cherdantseva from the city of Ufa, is a full-time sofa tester, spending up to 10 hours every day trying out new sofas for comfort and safety.
Last month, Russian furniture giant MZ5 Group announced that it was taking application for a new position---full-time sofa tester. Although all new products are tested in a specialized laboratory, management decided that in order to better meet the needs of consumers it needed some feedback on real-life use of its sofas. In just a few days, MZ5 received over 5, 000 job applications from people eager to spend most of their time sitting and lying on sofas.
“We were selecting candidates in several stages,” MZ5 Group spokesperson Anastasia Russkih said, “Initially we checked their resumes, and then we let them tell us why they wanted the job.” Eventually, the furniture company shortlisted just 7 candidates, among whom Anna Cherdantseva, a 26-year-old marketing expert, proved to be the most suitable for the job.
“I felt extreme competition, and it was a real fight for my dream job,” Anna said after getting sele cted. “I have a lot of ideas for improving the sofas, but I would prefer not to talk about them for now. I believe it will all work out between me and the sofas.”
Despite describing herself as an active person, Cherdantseva says that spending about 10 hours a day sitting on sofas doesn’t sound bad at all. “Of course I will spend a lot of time on new sofas. The more time I spend on them, the better it will be for my work,” she told reporters.
Anna Cherdantseva is currently on a three-month probation(试用期)at MZ5, but the company claims that as long as she proves to be up to the task, they plan on offering her a permanent position as a sofa tester. The young woman will receive a monthly salary of 56,000 rubles ($ 1, 000) for the first three months. It’s not so bad about the job.

Brazilian cocoa growers are learning lessons from French wine makers.
Like producers of wine from France's Champagne area, Brazil's chocolate industry is using geographical indication, or GI labels with good results. These labels show where the cocoa comes from and its quality. The special labels can lead to higher prices on the market.
Henrique Almeida is the 63-year-old owner of a farm in Coaraci, in the northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia. He is pleased with the "South Bahia" geographical indication for his cocoa. "The production of fine cocoa and the creation of the geographical indication label make it possible to have a profitable business and pull our region upwards," Almeida said.
For many years, farmers in Bahia had produced common cocoa, used widely in the chocolate industry. But in 1989, an outbreak of “witches’broom” disease sharply reduced the productivity of Bahia’s cocoa trees. These trees make up to 86 percent of Brazil's national crop. At the time, Almeida, like other producers in southern Bahia, chose to improve the quality of his crop in order to be able to continue growing.
“When I bought the farm, standard cocoa prices were low, and cocoa farmers were unmotivated(无动机的),while the chocolate market was doing well,”he told the French news agency AFP. “I started growing fine cocoa to make my own chocolate and add value to my product."
The label is the result of 10 years of work by Almeida and other cocoa producers, as well as cooperatives and researchers. Together, they created the South Bahia Cocoa Association to define(定义) production rules. The National Institute of Industrial Property registered the GI 6 years after the first registered GI.
The "South Bahia" label is the second GI given to Brazilian cocoa. The Linhares region in the state of Espirito Santo was the first GI to be registered in 2012. Tome-Acu in the northeastern state of Para became the third in 2019.
32.What might be a result of witches’ broom in1989?

C.Farmers started to grow fine cocoa.
D.Chocolate industry had to use common cocoa.
33.When was the “South Bahia” labeled?
A. In 2012.
B. In 2014.

mon cocoa may disappear soon.

Four Habits to Help You Succeed

Choose one goal to start something large enough that will give you a sense of achievement, while adjusting well to your values. If you want to achieve your goal, focus is the key here. 38 If you perform many tasks at a time, you might never finish your projects because they will take far too long.
•Set a date for success.
Know when you hope to realize your goal. 39 By setting a time limit, you are making the process realistic.
• 40
