My Home Province of Henan
Hi, my name is Xiaoming and I'm a 5th grade student in Henan province, located in central China. Henan may not be as well-known as some other provinces, but it's actually quite an amazing place with a really long history and lots of cool things to see and do. Let me tell you all about it!
First of all, Henan is home to many important historical sites from ancient China. It's considered the birthplace of Chinese civilization because evidence of some of the earliest human settlements has been found here dating back over 5,000 years! Can you believe people were living in Henan even before the Egyptian pyramids were built?
One of the most incredible historical treasures in Henan is the Shaolin Temple. I'm sure you've heard of the Shaolin monks and their amazing kung fu skills. Well, the Shaolin Temple is where it all started over 1,500 years ago! The monks train really hard every day, doing incredible acrobatics and martial arts. I've
been lucky enough to visit and see them performing - it's mindblowing how agile and strong they are. The temple buildings are beautiful too, with classic Chinese architecture and lovely gardens.
Another awesome place is the Longmen Grottoes which has over 2,000 caves and niches carved into the cliffside along the Yi River, stretching for over a kilometer. Starting way back in the
5th century, Buddhist monks carved these caves one by one as places for Buddha statues and artwork. There are massive Buddha statues over 15 meters tall mixed in with thousands of smaller ones in all different poses and styles depending on what dynasty they were made in. It's an incredible sight!
While we're on the topic of giant Buddha statues, I have to mention the Zhongyue Temple near the city of Kaifeng that has a 24 meter tall statue of a seated Buddha that's honestly a bit scary because it's so huge! Kaifeng is really cool though because it used to be one of the biggest cities in the world back in the 11th century. You can still see remains of the old city walls and gates that surrounded it.
Speaking of old cities, Luoyang is another place in Henan that has a ton of history behind it dating back over 4,000 years. It used to be the capital city of nine different dynasties from the Xia
all the way to the Tang! There are historical sites all over the place like the Luoyang Ancient Tombs Museum where you can see excavated graves and treasures from royal families thousands of years old.
But Henan isn't just about the past - we also have beautiful natural scenery like the Yuntai Mountain scenic area with lush forests, waterfalls, temples, and hiking trails. There are a bunch of different peaks to climb that give you a bird's eye view over the rivers and valleys. I went camping there once with my cousin and we saw monkeys, birds, and even a snake (from a distance, thankfully!).
Another cool natural area is the Huaguo Shan region, which literally means "Flower Fruit Mountain." It's covered in flowering peach and apricot trees in the spring that make the whole mountainside burst into shades of pink and white - it looks like a scene from a painting! I try to go every year with my parents to see the blossoms. There's even a peach blossom festival with music, dancing, and lots of tasty local food.
Speaking of food, Henan has some unique and delicious dishes that are worth trying. We're known for our delicious noodles like reganmian which are made with reganlia flatbread that's ripped into strips. The noodles are mixed with sauces and
ingredients like beef, tomatoes, green beans, or potatoes. My favorite is the suan nai pian - mung bean noodles in a sweet and sour broth. It's SO good, especially on cold winter days.
Another famous Henan dish is the Shao Bing, which is kind of like a sesame flatbread that's stuffed with all sorts of yummy fillings like pork, egg, green onions, and spices. You'll find little Shao Bing stands all over the place selling them fresh. They're perfect for a quick breakfast or snack.
I almost forgot to mention Henan's legendary Shao Lin Kung Fu martial arts! Not only did it originate from those famous Shaolin monks, but it's still actively practiced by masters and students all over the province. They take it super seriously with classes focused on perfecting complex movements and martial disciplines. I've started learning a few basic moves myself and it's intense but really cool!
So as you can see, my home of Henan has so much to offer in terms of history, culture, nature, food, and activities. From the majestic ancient sites to the lively markets to the beautiful mountains, there's always something fun to explore. I feel really lucky to be growing up surrounded by such an incredible place. I hope you get the chance to come visit Henan someday and experience it for yourself!

My Home Province of Henan
I am very proud to be from Henan Province in central China. Henan is truly the heartland of the Mother River - the Yellow River flows right through the province. With an incredibly rich history going back thousands of years to ancient times, Henan is known as the Cradle of Chinese Civilization.
Henan is located in the central part of China. In land area, it's not the biggest province, but in population it ranks near the top with over 100 million residents! That's because the land is extremely fertile from all the nutrient-rich soil deposited over the centuries by the Yellow River. Row after row of green crops and fields stretch out for miles and miles. My favorite times are when the crops are tall and the breeze makes little waves ripple through them.
In Zhengzhou, the capital city where I live, the landscape is quite flat. But in other parts of Henan, the scenery varies with beautiful mountains, valleys, and rivers. The Songshan Mountains are even one of the Five Sacred Mountains of China that people travel from all over to visit. I've been there with my
family and the misty peaked hills rising up through the clouds are breathtaking.
While Henan does have some level areas that are prone to flooding from the Yellow River, overall the province has a temperate continental climate which means dry weather, hot summers and cold winters. One of my favorite childhood memories is of playing in the first snowfall each year, trying to catch the big fluffy flakes on my tongue before they melted. Snow days were the best because I got to skip school and have snowball fights with my friends!
Speaking of friends, you can find people from all walks of life and dozens of minority ethnic groups living in Henan, especially in Zhengzhou. However, most of the people are of the Han Chinese ethnic majority. We have a saying that people from Henan are "laobaixing" which means kind of like the good old everday working folks who are the backbone and heart of China.
My favorite part about being from Henan is all the incredible history here. It's said that Henan is the birthplace of Chinese civilization itself, going back to the legendary Yellow Emperor who lived over 4,500 years ago! Dozens of influential philosophers, leaders and events throughout Chinese history have roots in Henan as well.
One of the biggest historical attractions in Henan is the Shaolin Monastery in Dengfeng city. This is the legendary birthplace of Shaolin kung fu and Buddhism in China dating back over 1,500 years! Watching the Shaolin monks demonstrate their amazing martial arts always leaves me in awe. Even though I'm just a kid, I've started learning some basic kung fu and meditation at the local Shaolin school.
Another really cool historical place is the Yin Ruins near Anyang city. This was the ancient capital of the Shang Dynasty over 3,500 years ago! Archaeologists have dug up so many mind-blowing relics there like bronze vessels, jade artifacts, and even an entire royal palace and underground tomb complex. Walking around the ruins, I feel like I've stepped back in time thousands of years. It really brings history to life.
Of course, I can't talk about Henan's history without mentioning the Longmen Grottoes! This is an incredible carved cave system extending over half a mile along the Yi River's cliffs. Construction started way back in the 5th century AD during the Northern Wei Dynasty. The ancient Buddhist artists painstakingly carved thousands upon thousands of statues and shrines directly into the rocky cliff walls. It is considered one of the most outstanding examples of rock-cut art and sculpture in the entire
world. Each cave is unique and many contain enormous towering Buddha statues as tall as a building! The intricate details covering every surface blow me away each time I visit.
While Henan is rightfully famous for its rich history and culture, we also have plenty of tasty foods that are popular nationwide in China. My personal favorite is the Henan smashed salad, which is a mix of fresh crispy vegetables, sauces and spices all mashed together in a big stone bowl. You use a heavy pushing tool to crush and mix all the flavors. Simple but so delicious!
Another iconic Henan dish is the Hui noodles from villages around Zhengzhou. These are thick, chewy ribbons of handmade dough that get ripped into individual noodles before boiling. Then they're topped with savory sauces, meats and veggies. I'll never forget the strong aroma and flavor of Hui noodles fresh from the street vendors. My mouth is watering just thinking about them!
Watermelons are also a huge crop that Henan is well-known for. During the hot summer months, you'll see truck after truck piled high with huge green-striped melons heading to markets all across China. There's nothing more refreshing than a thick wedge of ice-cold watermelon to beat the summer heat. When I
was really little, I remember having watermelon seed spitting contests with my cousins to see who could launch them the farthest!
Whether it's our rich history and culture, iconic foods, or hardworking people, Henan really is at the heart of so much that makes China great. I'm so glad I grew up immersed in the diverse traditions and lively spirit of this amazing province. While maybe not the most famous part of China to the outside world, in my eyes Henan is truly the heartbeat and cradle of the entire nation.
I feel so lucky to call it my home.

The Wonders of Henan Province
My name is Xiaomin and I am a fifth grade student at Zhengzhou No. 1 Primary School. Last summer, my family took an amazing trip around Henan province and I saw so many incredible sights. Henan is truly one of the most fascinating places in all of China!
Our journey began in the capital city of Zhengzhou. Even though it's a huge modern city, Zhengzhou has roots going back over 3,600 years to the Shang Dynasty. We visited the Shang Dynasty ruins and I marveled at how ancient peoples lived so
long ago. I saw pottery, bronze works, jade pieces, and even oracle bone inscriptions from that era. It was like stepping back in time!
From Zhengzhou, we traveled north to Anyang to explore the incredible archaeological finds from the later Shang and Zhou Dynasties. The massive rammed earth city walls and royal palace foundations gave me a sense of the power and grandeur of those ancient kingdoms. But what blew me away were the thousands of oracle bone fragments with the earliest known Chinese writing carved into them. Holding those 3,000 year old bones in my hands was simply mind-blowing!
Our next stop was the sacred Shaolin Monastery in Dengfeng County. The Shaolin Buddhist monks have been practicing their amazing kung fu martial arts for centuries. We watched a breathtaking performance of their lightning fast kicks, flips, and weapons skills. Seeing the monks' disciplined mastery of mind and body was truly inspiring. The Shaolin temples and forests felt peaceful and serene.
Then it was off to Luoyang, one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. The first thing I noticed was the distinctly different northern-style architecture compared to the buildings back home in the south. We spent days exploring the ancient
Buddhist grottoes and shrines carved directly into the sandstone cliffs. The incredible statues and murals inside the Longmen and Guanlin Grottoes depicting Buddhas, deities, and scenes from Buddhist scripture blended art, faith and history in an
awe-inspiring way.
No visit to Henan would be complete without seeing the legendary Songshan Mountain. As we approached, the mountain's unique cone-like peaks jutted up into the sky in an almost supernatural way. We took a cable car partway up, then hiked along the trails to ancient Taoist monasteries nestled in the crags. Looking out from the mountain's lofty heights, I could see the vast plains of Henan stretching out below me as far as the eye could see. It felt like being on top of the world!
Afterwards, we visited Kaifeng, another former imperial capital during the Song Dynasty. Kaifeng has beautiful gardens, mansions, and streets lined with shops and restaurants. But the most amazing place was the wondrously painted Painting Academy illustrating Taoist stories and legends. I was mesmerized as the vibrant images seemed to come alive all around me.
Our final stop was Jiyuan, famous for its delicious yellow wheat noodles. We toured a traditional noodle factory where the
workers were hand-pulling and slicing the dough into those signature long yellow strands. I even got to try making my own noodles - it was much harder than it looked! That night we feasted on plate after plate of piping hot noodles in savory broth.
I don't think I've ever eaten that well in my life!
Throughout our journey, I was struck by the incredible history, diverse cultures, natural beauty, and wonderful cuisine found across Henan. From the most ancient ruins to the vibrancy of today's cities, Henan felt like the beating heart of China's civilization. I am so fortunate to have experienced this amazing province first-hand. I know I will carry these memories with me forever and hope to explore more of Henan's wonders someday.。
