Title: Proposal for an Inter-School Speech Competition
By some measures, public speaking is cited as the number one fear above even death itself. Yet the ability to clearly and confidently communicate one's ideas verbally is an invaluable skill that can open doors in one's academic, professional and personal life. To help students conquer their fears and hone their oratory talents, I propose that our school host an inter-school speech competition for high school students in the region.
The primary objectives of this event would be to provide students a platform to practice public speaking in a friendly, low-stakes environment and to celebrate and recognize those with a talent for rhetoric and oration. At the same time, it would promote qualities like poise, preparation, and creative
self-expression that are vital to any effective public speaker.
Having witnessed the tremendous success of our school's debate club tournaments, I am confident that we have the experience and resources to pull off a speech competition that is both highly engaging and runs seamlessly. And given the universal importance of communication abilities, I believe there would be strong interest and participation from area schools.
Event Overview
The competition would be open to all high school students (grades 9-12) in a 50-mile radius. There would be three Speech Categories:
Persuasive Speaking
Interpretive Reading
Impromptu Speaking
The Persuasive and Interpretive categories would involve prepared speeches of 5-7 minutes, while Impromptu would
