六、阅读理解
13. To get an extra 14 years of life, don’t smoke, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly and drink alcohol in a proper amount. That is
according to a study published this Monday in the Public Library of Science Medicine Journal.
After tracking more than 20,000 people aged 45-79 years in the United Kingdom from about 1993-2007, Kay-Tee, Khaw of the University of Cambridge and his colleagues found that people who adopted these four healthy habits lived an average of 14 years longer than those who didn’t.
“We’ve known for a long time that these behaviors are good things to do, but we’ve not seen this benefit before, ” said Susan Jebb, head of Nutrition and Health at Britain’s Medical Research Council. “The benefit was also seen regardless of whether or not people were fat and what social class they came from.”
Study participants(参与者)scored a point each for not smoking, regular physical activity, eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day and moderate alcohol intake.
Public health experts said they hoped the study would inspire governments to introduce policies helping people to adopt these changes. But because the study only observed people rather than testing specific changes, it would be impossible to conclude that people who suddenly adopted these healthy
behaviors would surely gain 14 years.
“We can't say that any person could gain 14 years by doing these things, ”said Dr.Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization.“The 14 years is an average across the population of what's theoretically(理论上地)possible.”
“Most people know that things like a good diet matter and that smoking isn't good for them, ”Susan Jebb said.“We need to work on providing people with much more practical support to help them change.”

B.the study observed people as well as tested specific changes.
C.there's no need for people under 45 to adopt these good habits.
D.only those from first class can benefit from these healthy behaviors.
3. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.All the people are well aware of the harm of their bad habits.
B.People aged 45 to 70 have bad habits in the United Kingdom.
C.Governments should take measures to help people change their bad habits.
D.People have adopted the four healthy habits after knowing they're good.
4. What would be the best title for this passage?
A.Smoking and Drinking Cuts You 14 Years
B.How to Live a Much Healthier Life

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道,主要讲的是Guy Bryant收养了50多个孩子的善举。
14. Guy Bryant never intended to be a father figure. But over the past 12 years, he’s housed more than 50 foster kids in his Brooklyn apartment.
For decades, Bryant, 61, worked with teens aging out of New Y ork’s child welfare system. His job was to find services that would make the transition (过渡) to living on their own easier. But he felt that what he could accomplish at the New Y ork City Administration for Children’s Services office wasn’t enough. So in 2007, he decided to become a foster parent.
In an interview last month, Bryant told Romario V assell, 21, one of his foster children, that agreeing to care for him was definitely one of the best decisions he made in foster care. Bryant told V assell that he was nervous when he took in his first foster child. He said, “I lived alone at that point, and he was a kid that nobody wanted to take because of his behaviors. He got in a fight and he appeared at my house.” Bryant said his family thought he was out of his mind for making such a big lifestyle change and wondered how Bryant would adjust.
Bryant had been V assell’s assigned case worker when they met. Bryart suggested that V assell, then an untidy 18-year-old, consider foster care as an option to get out of the home lead shelter where he was staying.
At first, Vassell was hesitant. “I didn’t know how foster care was.” he said.
Since living with Bryant, V assell now feels like he has a support network. “If I feel down and like I’m cornered, I have someone I can reach out to and talk to.” he said. “And that’s what I really love.”
Bryant told Vassell, “Whatever you’ve learned from me, I want you to teach it to someone else. Because that’s what’s important to me.”

文章介绍了作者在驾车回家路上,因哭泣被两个骑车人看到,这两个骑车人处于关切而骑车一路紧跟她,直到她回到家,这让作者很紧张,但误会解除后作者对二人的善举非常感动。
16. “They’re following me!” I thought to myself, as I watched the two young men on motorbikes slow down next to me as I drove. “Ignore
them. They’ll go away.” I decided and turned my attention back to the road. As a woman living in a big city, such encounters were not new, but I was unusually disturbed by a strange sadness that day. I realized that whenever I stopped at a signal, the two bikers would also pause alongside, staring intently (热切地).
This continued through three traffic signals, leaving no room for doubt. I drove as fast as I could to stay ahead of them, but I couldn’t shake them off for the busy evening traffic. I finally reached home and released a sigh of relief until I realized that they had chased me all the way to my doorstep. Even scarier, they were now off the bike and at the gates, trying to talk to me.
Feeling safer on familiar ground, I turned back to tell them off. “Please don’t get us wrong,” one of them said, his tone low and concerned. “We saw you weeping inside your car and wanted to make sure you were okay.”
I realized in an instant what must have happened. The men had seen me breaking down in my car and followed me out of concern. I thanked
them sincerely. My emotions got better at the time. I never saw them again. But even more than 10 years later, I still am struck by their selfless concern for a stranger and remember them with gratitude.

4. What is the author’s attitude towards the two strangers?
A.Admirable.B.Hateful.C.Satisfied.D.Grateful.
七、阅读理解
17. Radar(雷达) is an electronic device that detects planes, ships, coastlines, landmarks, and even storm clouds. The name radar comes from
the first letters of the words radio direction and ranging. As the human eye uses light waves to see, radar “sees” with radio waves. Without radar, planes could not land safely in bad weather and ships could not move safely in thick fog. 1
In the 1800s it was discovered that radio waves could be reflected from objects. But scientists did not make great advances in radar research until the 1930s, when the world was threatened by war. 2 It has been used widely in almost every conflict since then.
Echoes make it possible for radar to work. When a beam of radio waves is sent out, it strikes on an object and returns an echo. This echo is picked up by radar and recorded on a screen similar to television screen. On the screen an observer sees a flash, or a blip, that shows the direction and distance of the object. 3
Airport control towers use radar to guide planes in for safe landings. Almost all large ships depend on radar to prevent collisions with icebergs or other ships. 4 Weather forecasters “see” the size, direction, and speed of storms on radar screens. Astronomers can even use radar to measure accurately the distance to the moon. Thus, the device has generated major advancements.
5 Huge radar antennas have been installed all over the United States. They guard us against possible enemy attacks. We have ballistic—
missiles (战略导弹)warning systems that can alert us to attacks when missiles are more than 1,000 miles away. Other radar systems warn us against enemy aircraft and even spying space satellites.
A.Police track speeders in radar-equipped cars.
B.These measurements are now highly accurate.
C.The device can be used in a wide range of fields.
D.During World War II many countries used radar effectively.
E.It is therefore especially valuable to shippers and travelers.
F.Today radar is used by commercial airliners and weather forecasters.
G.Strengthening national defense is one of radar’s most important functions.
