13、In order to tell what I believe, I must bring up something from my personal history.
The turning point of my life was my decision to give up my promising business job and study music. My parents didn’t think it was a good choice I took up music as a job. Considering my family back ground, this was understandable. My grandfather had taught music for forty years at Spring Hill College. Although he was much loved by his students, he didn’t earn(挣钱) enough to provide for his large family. As a result of this example in the family, my parents strongly asked me to the college instead of a music school, and so to college I went.
Before my graduation from Columbia, the family ran into some money problems and I felt it was my duty to leave college and find a job. That was why I took a business job, which I always think of as the wasted years. I went into it for money, for being able to help the family. Money is all I got out of it. It was not enough. I felt that life was passing me by.
I became very sad.
My wish was to save enough money to quit(退出) and go to Europe to study music. I continued to make money, and finally, little by little, I saved enough to go abroad.
At that time, my family got out of the trouble. ____________, and so I gave up my position and sailed for Europe. I stayed four years, worked harder than I had ever dreamed of working before, and enjoyed every minute of it.
“Enjoyed” is too soft a word. I walked on air. I really lived. When I broke away from business, it was against the advice of all my friends and family, but if I had stayed in business, I do not believe I would have made a success of living.
Money is a wonderful thing, but now I know that it is possible to pay too high a price for it.
1.The writer gave his grandpa’s example in order to ______.
A.show how great his grandpa was forty years ago
B.thank his parents’ support for studying in a music school
C.tell others that a musician wasn’t a good choice for the writer
D.explain why his parents disagreed him to take up music as a job
2.Which of the following can be best filled in “_______”?
A.My dream came true at last B.I went on to practice the violin
C.My family no longer needed my help D.I made so much money to support my family
3.The underlined sentence “I walked on air” means the writer______.
A.couldn’t find his place in a new environment B.couldn’t make a success of living
C.felt free because he was doing what he loved D.felt a pity for beginning new life
4.What’s the best title of the passage?
A.Life in a Business World. B.Money Is Success.
C.Stick to Something in Your Life. D.Learning Music in Europe.

16、“Without music, life would be a mistake,” famous German philosopher(哲学家)Friendrich Nietzsche said over a century ago. Music is a big part of our lives. But in recent years, some US schools have cut music classes to control budgets(预算).
For example, Chicago public schools hurt arts education when it fired over 1,000 teachers. Among them, 10 percent of the teachers taught art or music, according to The Washington Times. In fact, this is not just a problem in the US. In other countries, such as China and the UK, music classes are not thought to be as important as ones like science, math and history. That’s partly because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn’t tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to focus(关注)on subjects that are tested more often. However, learning music is useful in many ways.
When playing music, you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks, according to Kenneth Guilmartin of Music Together, an early childhood music development program. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode(解码)them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time.
Music has a special connection with science as well. Y ou can see that many scientists are good at playing music: Einstein played the violin, and German physicist Max Planck did well in playing the piano.

A.they were too difficult to learn B.students in the US weren’t interested in music

3.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A.Playing the piano needs people to see music notes.
B.Playing the piano needs people to use fingers to make sounds.
C.Decoding music notes is needed while we are playing music.
D.Different abilities are needed to work together while we are playing music.
4.How many scientists who are good at playing music are mentioned in this passage?
A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four.
5.What’s the writer’s opinion according to this passage?
A.Music is as simple as it looks. B.Music classes should be cut in some schools.
C.Music is a big part of our lives. D.Music isn’t a very important life skill for us.
17、Five Ways to Rock the Rest of the Semester
With exams around the corner, how can you possibly pack in one more English word, let alone the causes of the Cold War? Don’t worry. Here is our handy guide to help you
Power Down
So you stayed up too late last night reading Mock ingjay for the fifth time. Oops! When you’re that fired, your schoolwork suffers. Instead of studying inefficiently while you are sleepy, allow yourself a 15-minute afterschool power nap. Studies show that even a few minutes of shut-eye can improve memory and concentration.
Take Notes
Not quite grasping that super complicated concept in your chemistry class? Y ou may need to change the way you take notes. Instead of recording every word your teacher says, try using visual hints like pictures, symbols and word bubbles. You can even switch computer fonts or pen color for the important stuff.
Dream On
Your bed’s not just for zzz’s. Experts say it may be good to study in bed, too. Why? We’re able to absorb more right before bed because we’re less distracted and t he new information stays in our minds as we sleep. So, slide into bed with a textbook or notes, read for 15 minutes, and then turn off the lights for some sweet and smart dreams.
Brain Food
You’re in the middle of a biology exam when your mind goes blank. You knew this stuff cold at home, but now you can’t tell a ribosome from a chloroplast. What’s going on? Your brain’s in need of some refueling. Have some snacks like apple slices or cheese before class, and have plenty of water, too. If your teacher doesn’t mind, pop in a piece of gum during an exam. Some scientists think the chewing increases the flow of oxygen to the brain.
Smart Move
Ugh! You’re taking an English test and you cannot remember the past participle of “understand”. What to do? Skip it. Test taking is all about timing, so don’t waste it on tricky questions. Move ahead and answer everything you know before returning to the ones you don’t. Chances are, once you get back to the toughies, you’ll recall the answer or at the very least, you’ll have a little more time to come up with one that works.
1.When taking notes, we can do all these except ______.
A.draw pictures
B.change the typeface
C.switch on the computer
D.colour the key points
2.According to the passage, _____.
